The BMW Car Club of America and the BMW Car Club of America Foundation are committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of our members, chapter leaders, boards, staff, and guests. Last week we pub-lished our fi rst statement in reaction to the Covid-19 pandemic. At that time, we prom-ised to carefully monitor the situation and all communications from the Centers for Dis-ease Control and Prevention (CDC); federal, state, and local governmental agencies; and local health offi cials to keep abreast of this ever-changing situation.

We have continued to receive many ques-tions from chapter leadership and members regarding the planning and execution of up-coming events in the face of the worsening COVID-19 outbreak. We have reached a point of national crisis and during such a time it is our patriotic duty to assist our fellow Ameri-cans in any way that we can.

In this instance, the most simple and ef-fective way to curb the spread of this disease, as well as protect both ourselves and those around us, is by removing ourselves from the path of community transmission.

To that end, the BMW CCA Board of Di-rectors voted to approve the following:

Beginning at 5:00 p.m. EDT March 20, 2020, and running through May 1, 2020, at 5:00 p.m. EDT, BMW Car Club of America chapters and members are prohibited from engaging in any in-person events or gatherings under the umbrella of the BMW Car Club of America.

In other words, there must be no sanc-tioned, hosted and/or sponsored/co-spon-

sored BMW Car Club of America events including, but not limited to: business meet-ings, social gatherings, driving tours, con-cours, autocrosses, HPDE’s, Club Racing, or any other type of in-person gathering. Any chapter and/or member attempting to orga-nize, execute, or otherwise participate in said activities or gatherings under the umbrella of the club will face disciplinary action includ-ing, but not limited to revocation of mem-bership and revocation of chapter charter. MOREOVER, any individual member, chapter leader, and chapter that violates this policy will be denied coverage under the BMW Car Club of America liability insurance program.

The Club and Foundation will continue to monitor and review the situation with close attention to our current policies. Updates will be issued as needed and relevant.

The safety and security of our guests, students, members, staff, and leaders is now and will always remain our highest priority. Our thoughts and prayers are with the thou-sands of Americans who have been sickened by COVID-19. Our greatest hope is that this passes quickly and that we can all resume our normal lives.

As always, thank you for your member-ship in and support of the BMW Car Club of America and the BMW Car Club of America Foundation. We are here to help in any way we can. Please do not hesitate to ask any questions. We look forward to serving our members and providing safe, fun, and edu-cational events in 2020 and beyond.—Chris Hennecy, Directer of Marketing - BMW CCA National Offi ce

Bimmers Parachuting into Fort Bragg: One of the great hidden secrets for North Carolina is the US Army base at Fort Bragg. This is a very large facility which covers a great swath of ground on the edge of the eastern edge of the famed Sand Hills region, near the city of Fayetteville. It also happens to be the home of the 82nd Airborne Di-vision, one of the most storied units in all the American military. The unit’s history dates to World War I, at which point it took on the name “All American Division” as it be-came part of the American Expeditionary Force in France. Almost unknown outside of military circles, we discovered

that there is a remarkable museum hidden in plain sight inside the compound adjacent to what appear to be the base’s residential neighborhoods. Opened in 1945, it has

PAUL HOECKE Notes from the roadThe Call of the Open Road

(This article was written prior to the current CO-VID-19 pandemic and NC’s “stay at home” order. Please be safe and follow the the retrictions in place. Think of this article as a “day dream” for later, more appropriate times - ed.)

Yep, folks! It’s April, meaning Spring has sprung! (No foolin’.) Time to saddle up (or hitch up, as the case may be) your trusty steed – a BMW, of course – and chase away the winter blahs.

Yeah, I know; we have little cause these days to talk about winter blahs, seeing as how Ol’ Man Winter hasn’t exactly been himself this year. In fact, aside from a few chilly, rainy intervals and (Oh, yeah!) that mercifully brief snow episode in late February, the old geezer has been downright mild-mannered, at least as far as my neck of the woods is concerned

Which, incidentally, is fi ne by me. Still, saying it gives me an excellent excuse

to launch into this month’s topic: Country byways that will stir your blood, pump up your spirits, and reacquaint you with the Joy of Driving.

We here in NC are lucky in this respect. Once you’re past the urban sprawl of our major popula-tion centers, our state is replete with twisty two-lanes, and lightly populated US highways too, for that matter. Devoid of strip malls, no-tell motels, fast food joints, service stations and other clut-ter, these roads less traveled offer you the perfect opportunity to unwind in whatever manner you prefer.

You may choose to do it by cruising leisurely-like and enjoying the scenery, which is always good for one’s soul. Or you can let your Bimmer stretch its legs as you seek the late apex at every turn and have abrupt elevation changes test your

car’s suspension. (Heck, you may easily fi nd your-self doing a bit of both.) But either way, it’s bound to recharge your personal batteries – that part of your inner self that’s probably become near-dormant during all those exasperating rush hour commutes in lousy weather.

Now, I realize that you may have joined Tri-angle Coordinator Rob McIsaac, or the folks in the Charlotte or Down East/Hurricane Areas, on some of the drives they like to organize. Judging by the stories about these tours, in ROUNDEL and this publication, just about every participant thinks they’re an absolute blast. If so, I’m probably preaching to the choir here.

Or maybe not. What if you want more? What if the call of the

open road resonates with you enough to make you want to do it solo? I for one am for it. No doubt charging down a road as part of a caravan is fun. But doing it on your own is Freedom. Like fl ying into the Wild Blue Yonder – only in two dimensions. (I’m sure you prefer to avoid visiting the third dimension, up or down – if you know what I mean.) So, to illustrate what I’m talking about, let me cite one of my favorite solo drives. (You’ll forgive me if all this is old news to you; it may not be for other club members.)

Let’s say I’m going to VIR for the annual Club Race Outing this month. (BTW: I am; and so are you, aren’t you?) From where I live, in the south-eastern corner of Orange County, I’ll wend my way past Carrboro and Calvander to pick up Old NC 86, the fi rst leg on my run. Offi cially designated a Scenic NC Byway, the road easily lives up to its label. Its long sweeping stretches, interspersed with a couple of blind Esses, are a delight. That is, until I reach the outskirts of Hillsborough, where I

join ‘new’ NC86 – and traffi c. Normally, the town’s super low speed limits

and weekend traffi c would be a royal drag – ex-cept I avoid the worst of it by leaving home real early. And once I’ve cruised through our historic county seat, it’s an easy shot of some twenty-odd miles to just short of Yanceyville. The long straights and sweeping bends through farm coun-try, plus a couple of downhill-uphill stretches let me put the pedal to the metal – though judi-ciously, with an eagle eye out for early bird week-end drivers and the (fortunately very rare) traffi c gendarme. Until, approaching Yanceyville, I take an acute right onto NC 62, which is where the real fun begins.

The next twelve miles on NC 62, from the junction with NC 86 to Milton, next to the Vir-ginia state line, could double as an open-road version of an HPDE course. As the nicely paved road winds through the rolling terrain, past fi elds, country churches and a couple of solar farms, my roadster gets a real workout. There are sweeping right and left-hand carousels, blind turns, and lots of elevation changes, which I negotiate at speeds that shall remain my secret (governed by my good sense, of course). There’s even a cool-down lap – the last couple of miles approaching Milton – until I come to the stoplight at NC 57, the main drag through town. Turning right takes me, slowly, through Milton to a sharp left turn, just past the town limits, from where a narrow, twisty lane alternately dives and rises on the way to the track entrance.

In short, this 12-mile drive may not be a mini Nürburgring, or VIR, for that matter. But it sure is Fun, and a chance to polish my driving skills. Which is why I like to think of this stretch of NC 62 as my private driver school session.

I could go on, but I won’t. To wax eloquent about my other favorite solo drives – like the one to Pittsboro via the Chicken Bridge Road – would take more space than this publication has to spare. Besides, belaboring you with lots of route instructions isn’t the point here. It’s only a big hint – an invitation, if you will – for you to seek out those Roads Less Traveled on your own.

Those wide-open roadways, in my neighborhood and yours, just beg to be explored. And they’re yours to discover and enjoy.

So, go for it, no matter if you have a destina-tion in mind or not. After all, it’s the journey that counts.

Hello, fellow club racing fans. In case you need to be reminded, the upcoming weekend (April 3-5) is when club racers from far and near will be hitting the asphalt at VIR during our an-nual local speed fest – aka the Tarheel Chapter-sponsored Spring Club Race. Naturally, we expect this event to draw a large number of local hot shoes, perhaps including friends of yours.

In fact, by now, with registration about to close, they probably are hauling their BMWs to the track as you read this – if they’re not already there. Which means that you ought to be follow-ing their example by planning to show up for the annual Club Race Outing. As usual, it’s on Satur-day and will feature a corral, refreshments, pad-dock visits and noon-time parade laps of the en-tire 3.27-mile circuit for you, family members and guests. (For registration and other details, contact Jon Strine at [email protected].)

In short, if you’re a real fan, you don’t want to miss it.

Of course, come to think of it, you could even shoot for catching the entire weekend’s action at the track – say, by volunteering to crew for a friend who will be racing. (You do love the reek of hot brake pads in the morning, don’t you?)

In the meantime (that is, while you’re ponder-ing the above options) we have some club racing news for you to digest. Namely, it’s the results

of the race at Road Atlanta some fi ve weeks ago which kicked off the 2020 BMW CCA Club Racing (CR) season for those of us in the eastern U.S.

A Peachtree Chapter-hosted event, it ran the weekend of Feb. 28-March 1 and saw some fi fty- plus entries in eleven classes, from as far away as Upstate New York and Texas, participate in the fray on the 2.5-mile Braselton track. Predictably, close to half of the racers hailed from the host chapter. But, curiously enough, for a track that’s quite popular with local hot shoes, the Tarheel contingent was smaller than we expected: Just ten drivers, including Charles Harding in C-Mod; John Gardner (B-Mod) and Sri Haputantri (D-Mod), both racing solo in their respective classes; plus Brian Dehler, Evan Levine, Chris Matos, Amy Oldenburg, John Park and Al Pereida in the huge, 23-entry Spec E46 class; and Chris Lindner in KP.

The results of Friday’s 37-lap enduro were kinda typical of CR endurance races in that the overall victories went not to the fastest drivers but to those with the smoothest pit stop strate-gies. (In fact, there were nine DNFs, including four by local drivers, because they had completed less than half of the race’s laps by the time the checker fl ew.) The best Tarheel showing was by Haputant-ri, who won DM in tenth place overall, and Gard-ner, who claimed his class victory with a fi nish in mid-pack. Harding fi nished second in class, but

6 TARHEEL CHAPTER FOOTNOTES http://www.tarheelbmwcca.org

ON THE COVER:treasure trove of things inside going back to the beginning in 1917.

This became the target for our March 7th drive. A hearty group of Bavarian supporters joined in the fun, with 14 cars and 27 people making the jaunt, vectoring in on the target from multiple locations. A cool, windy, but sunny day greeted us as we assembled at the rally point, a well-positioned Starbucks in Garner. After a jo-vial drivers meeting and plenty of Morning Joe to boost our energy levels, we blasted off onto the Interstate for the quickest way to get away from civilization. Once south of Benson, we vectored off onto the byways of the Old North State for some semi-serious driving adventures. We had quite a cast of München Machines for the mis-sion, with three E46’s (2 of them M3’s) being the most common choice for drivers today … fol-lowed by a brace of M2’s … a rare Z4M convert-ible … a stunning blue F30 M3 … and a collection

of other truly terrifi c vehicles. It made for quite a parade as we blipped between the nicely banked turns in the countryside, without an off-camber experience anywhere. There is something magical about listening to the Big Six in an M2 moving the tach needle quickly in choreographed harmony with one’s own heartbeat. Clearly, this is therapy for the soul.

The logistics for this adventure were a bit more complicated than most. While the Depart-ment of Defense makes it possible for civilians to visit the base, there’s a clear process that must be followed with precision to get through the secu-rity gauntlet to get inside the perimeter. The base Security Offi cers were tremendously helpful in this regard, greeting us with a group of courteous and very well armed soldiers as we traversed the visitors center. Only mishap here was when one guest past got picked up by the wind and sucked into a crevice in the center console! That re-

in 18th place overall, and that only by posting the fastest lap time (over 100 mph) late in the race.

The 16-lap sprint race on Saturday yielded the same results for our guys, except they took the checker a lot closer to the front: Namely, Ha-putantri scored another class win in fourth place overall and Gardner fi nished ninth overall to win again in BM, while Harding fi nished a close sec-ond overall and in class.

Sunday’s schedule comprised two races, the feature sprint followed by a fun race. The 18-lap feature race saw a repeat of the previous day’s results, but this time Harding won the whole ball of wax by taking the checker in fi rst place overall, followed three seconds later by Haputantri in second place overall for another class win. Gard-ner claimed his third BM victory fi nishing sixth overall. (We also feel Levine and Matos deserve honorable mentions for fi nishing third and fourth in the crowded Spec E46 group.)

As for the 12-lap fun race, the fi eld was down to only twenty-three drivers, including six local

hot shoes. It made for a wide-open track and a great opportunity for some racers to show their stuff. And Matos and Levine took full advantage of the situation. They beat all but one of their class rivals to the checker, fi nishing 0.611 seconds apart for third and fourth place overall.

Turning to the local pro scene – i.e. Bim-merWorld Racing (BWR) and their assault on the 10-round IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge series – there’s nothing new to report at this point. Round Two, the 2-hour race at Sebring, was BWR’s chance to close the 10-point gap separat-ing James Clay and Devin Jones from the top in the driver standings. But the race ran on the third weekend in March, which put it a couple of weeks past our fi ling deadline for this report. Conse-quently, the results posted by BWR’s two Grand Sport (GS) driver teams – Clay and Jones in the No.82 BMW GT4 and the duo of Nick Galante and Dillon Machavern in the No.80 GT4 – will appear in our next report. So, stay tuned.

Brunch, Aquarium, and Fort Macon

Seventeen members traveling in eleven ve-hicles from Downeast, Hurricane, and Cape Fear rolled into the parking lot of the Island Grille in Atlantic Beach on a remarkably pleasant February 9th. After some car talk while standing around a Dinah enhanced E85, we ventured inside for a scrumptious Sunday brunch. A menu chocked full of delectables, the All Surf Benedict and fresh brewed coffee was my favorite. A quaint place, where our group literally occupied three fourths of the restaurant and were able to take our time dining, sharing how we acquired our vehicles and enjoying fellowship

After a few snapshots in the parking lot and fueled from fi ne food, our caravan reduced to nine, headed along NC 58 to the Pine Knoll Shores Aquarium. What a sight for the locals to see glimmering ultimate driving machines ma-neuvering as if one. Once inside the museum, we were greeted by a docent who escorted us to a

green screen for a group picture. Due to it being sensory awareness day at the museum, the two story waterfall at the entrance to the Mountain region of the Old North State was not fl owing. We meandered through the Mountain, Piedmont, and Coastal Plain regions viewing a variety of aquatic and non-aquatic inhabitants specifi c to each re-gion. Exhibits attracting much of the attention were the rays in the touch tank, the Living Ship-wreck habitat featuring a variety of ocean dwellers majestically swimming about the replica of the German U-352 submarine sunk off the coast of our state during WWII, and the two rescued fl ight-less bald eagles.

Most of the group had to get on the road home while a few of us accelerated to Fort Macon before sunset. The exhibit of Army Surgeon El-liott Coues’ bird preservation and collection was noteworthy at the Visitor’s Center. His work as an ornithologist advanced the study and classifi ca-

quired another trip back to security … to a group that was clearly humored by the misadventure.

Once inside the base, the Bimmers vectored to the museum via several routes … watching them roll in was sort of the equivalent of Bavar-ian Pick Up Sticks. Made for some great pictures as they rolled in, giving us a great photo-op in the parking lot. The museum staff had also been forewarned about the incoming surge or tourists and were well prepared for us; they even offered to fi re up a movie on the history of the Division off-schedule to make us feel at home. After that we toured the museum and surrounding groups, enjoying the warm sun and the cool breezes.

Around 1pm it was time to reassemble in the parking lot and head for the “human refueling sta-tion” on the other side of Fayetteville, in this case the Mash House Microbrewery. We had to call ahead and up our reservation to 27 people … “no problem” was the happy reply. Once again, we created a parade of Roundels as we traversed out

of the base, past the DOD security and on to the home of some remarkably good Stouts and IPA’s. The staff had arranged for us to use the screened porch, even fi ring up the gas heaters to provide us with a terrifi c environment to consume some re-markably good vittles and brews. Everything was better then everything else, the service was terrifi c … and the afternoon simply melted away. Before we knew it, two hours had gone by and it was time to saddle up the Bimmer again. All those Roundels spooling up in unison made for quite the symphony as we eased our way back onto the byways out of Fayetteville. A short while later we were on the open road surrounded by beautiful countryside … with Fort Bragg in the rear view mirror, it was all-too-tempting to put the spurs to the M2 and give “her” some room to run, in formation with a gorgeous white E46-M3. Magic moments, no doubt. Life really is better in a Bim-mer. -Robert McIsaac

tion of North American birds. The fort located on the eastern point of Bogue Banks was built in 1826 and done so with the most number of bricks than any other U.S. fort. If you haven’t been to this 2nd most visited park in NC, I highly recom-mend you do so. With the sun setting, it was time to head home after a great day with fellow Bim-mer enthusiasts. -Alex Kordis
