General Meeting

Don’t forget to join your fellow members for the Friends of the Cape Coral Library General Meeting on Saturday, September 21. The morning will begin at 9:30 AM with coffee, juice, light snacks, and social time. The business portion of the meeting will start at 10:00 AM and will include the program presentation described below. The FOCCL General Meetings, which take place in the large meeting room of the Cape Coral Library at 921 SW 39th Terrace, are free and open to the public. We hope to see you there. You are also welcome to bring a guest or two.

Guest Speaker for September FOCCL Meeting:

Janelle Trull of Cape Coral Historical Museum

Janel Trull, Executive Director of the Cape Coral Historical Museum, will be speaking about the early history of Cape Coral beginning with brothers Jack and Leonard Rosen’s purchase of land in 1957. Their goal was to create a city with as many canals as Venice. Through county wide sales tactics and the availability of installment payment plans, it wasn’t long before the first family moved in and Cape Coral has been growing ever since. Noted as one of the fastest growing cities in the state today, the City of Cape Coral was incorporated in 1970 and will celebrate its 50th anniversary next year with a series of events and programming put on by the City and the Cape Coral Historical Museum. The Cape Coral Historical Museum was incorporated in 1980 to collect, preserve and share the City’s history and opened at 544 Cultural Park Blvd in 1987.

The program presenter for the November general meeting will be a representative from the Cape Coral Friends of Wildlife, a volunteer organization whose purpose is to preserve and enhance the habitats of protected species and to educate the community about Cape Coral’s wildlife resources. We’ll learn about how burrowing owls landed in the Cape and so much more!

While it is raining every day in Florida, they

are praying for rain here. Hope some of you

were able to make the July Friends meeting

and hear about “what other members are

reading”. Monica will publish the list in this

month’s Accents. For me I take the quiet

time visiting my family to read old favorites -

this summer re-reading Laurie R. King’s first

Mary Russell; Sherlock Holmes book, The

Beekeeper’s Apprentice. That woman can

write.

When we were discussing the July meeting

this spring we also talked about early library memories. Dora

Shilling, Principal Librarian, remembered being allowed to ride her

bicycle the 2 miles to the library. She laughed when she returned

to the small town and discovered it was only about 7 blocks.

I grew up in a small town in Illinois blessed with a beautiful

Carnegie library building and the sense of awe walking up those

steps. Yep - I got to ride my bicycle. Those were the days. We

moved when I was in 4th grade and our new little town had a small

room in the Town Hall. Thank goodness for that little pocket card

in front because then I could frequently check to see “yep I read

that one”.

Monica recalled that her mile-square hometown in New Jersey also

had a single library room inside the Town Hall. But luckily her

mom would take the children 3 miles on a bus to the larger

Johnson Public Library a couple of towns away. They would return

home with bag loads of

books. (Monica was

actually named after a

favorite librarian who had

worked there when her

mother was a child.)

So I hope you will join us

soon at our World Class

beautiful library. We can

make some new memories

together

A Sampling of Upcoming Programs for Adults at the Cape Coral Public Library

There are so many worthwhile programs for children, teens and adults scheduled at the Cape Coral Public Library for September and October that there isn’t room to list all of them here. To follow is information about some of the programs for adults that happen to be of special interest. Nonnative Wildlife in SW Florida (Age Group: Adults) Thursday, September 12, 2:00pm - 3:00pm Nonnative species do not belong in Florida. Some do not cause many, if any, problems. Others, however, are invasive, meaning that they negatively impact native fish and wildlife, cause damage that is costly to repair, or pose a threat to human health and safety. Learn how to identify and report nonnative wildlife in SW Flor-ida. Presented by Tyson Dallas, Biologist with the Nonnative Fish and Wildlife Program.

Exploring Arts & Crafts: Memory Wire Beaded Bracelets (Age Group: Adults) Wednesday, September 18, 1:30pm - 3:30 Registration is required for this particular session. Explore arts and crafts through demonstrations and hands-on practice. In this session we will use memory wire to create a beaded bracelet. Sponsored by the Friends of the Cape Coral Library.

Buckingham Army Airfield in World War II (Age Groups: Teens, Adults) Friday, September 27, 2:00pm - 3:00pm Come learn about Buckingham Army Airfield and the important role it played during World War II. Histori-an Jim Zbick of the Southwest Florida Military Museum, located in Cape Coral, will discuss the significance of this local historical site and take your questions.

Medicare Open Enrollment & Important 2020 Updates (Age Group: Adults) Tuesday, October 8, 1:00pm - 3:00pm Medicare Open Enrollment is from October 15 - December 7. Join us to learn about your Medicare options, how to save on Part D costs, and how to prepare for Medicare Open Enrollment. The session will discuss important updates for 2020. Session presented by SHINE (Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders), a pro-gram offered by the Florida Department of Elder Affairs and your local Area Agency on Aging.

Book Discussion - "A Gentleman in Moscow" (Age Group: Adults) Wednesday, October 9, 2:00pm - 3:00pm, in Conference Room Join us for a discussion of A Gentleman in Moscow, by Amor Towles. In 1922, Count Alexander Rostov is deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, and is sentenced to house arrest in the Metro-pol, a grand hotel across the street from the Kremlin. An indomitable man of erudition and wit, Rostov has never worked a day in his life and must now live in an attic room while some of the most tumultuous dec-ades in Russian history unfold outside. His reduced circumstances unexpectedly lead him to emotional dis-covery.

Haunting Tales of the Paranormal (Age Group: Teens, Adults) Friday, October 18, 2:00pm - 3:30pm Paranormal historian and author Beth Cooper will share tales of ghostly hauntings and real-life paranormal phenomena. Beth will sell and sign her books after her presentation.

Seniors Eating Well: Great Grain Discoveries (Age Group: Adults) Wednesday, October 23, 2:00pm - 3:00pm Great Grain Discoveries is part of a 5-session series designed to help older adults improve their nutrition and health status. Information, tips and recipes will be shared during each session. Dates for the entire se-ries are as follows: Oct. 23-Great Grain Discoveries, Oct. 30-All Star Senior Snacks, Nov. 20-Heart Healthy Meals, Dec. 4-Cooking and Seasoning with Herbs, Dec. 11-Savory Soups. Presented by the University of Florida/Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences' Family Nutrition Program.

Born in Miami, Matthew Lee has been living in Cape Coral for eight years. Currently a senior in high school, Matthew spends his time doing homework, sports and spending time with his family. Previously working as a lifeguard at Sunsplash Family Waterparks, Matthew loves swimming and the Florida waters. Now working as a page at the Cape Coral Library, Matthew is much more passionate about reading. Nonfiction and healthy living books are his favorite. Matthew is happy to be a part of LCLS.

DEDICATED ARTISTS OF SOUTHWEST FLORIDA TO EXHIBIT THEIR TALENTS FOR FIFTH YEAR AT CAPE CORAL LIBRARY

SEPTEMBER 4 THROUGH OCTOBER 29

An exceptional array of two-and three-dimensional work by members of The Dedicated Artists of Southwest Florida Inc. (DASF) will fill the gallery walls and display cases of the Cape Coral Library from September 4 through October 29.

This marks the fifth year that the local club of artists will be featured at the Library. “We’ve invited these skillful artists back each fall, because the variety of their designs and surfaces on which they paint is so exciting,” explained Monica Rahman, Art Gallery Chair for the Friends of the Library. “And that is no doubt also the reason their annual exhibition is eagerly anticipated by our regular gallery visitors.”

The Dedicated Artists of Southwest Florida was actually founded in 1978 to promote the art of painting for anyone interested in learning to paint in all mediums and for those with all levels of abilities and experience. Now it is a local

club of 75 members who come from Naples, Bonita Springs, Fort Myers, Lehigh Acres, Cape Coral, Punta Gorda, Port Charlotte and North Port. Members attend monthly meetings (held in the Cape Coral Art League building located at 516 Cultural Park Blvd.) that feature different painting projects conducted by talented instructors. Mediums may include acrylics, oil, watercolor and colored pencils. For more information about the club’s meeting schedule, projects and seminars visit their website: www.DASFartists.com.

While an important focus on learning the art of painting is integral to the club, there is also an impressive facet of community outreach. As a 501(c)(3) public charity, DASF philanthropic projects support the Harry Chapin Food Bank with canned goods collections as well as

cash donations and the Ronald McDonald House Charities pop tab collections. DASF also provides a $500 annual scholarship for one Lee County high school senior.

DASF initiated two other projects that employ their members’ talents. One is the Suitcase Project which provides suitcases decorated by their members for the Children’s Network of SW Florida. These whimsical and colorful suitcases provide Foster children with a place for their belongings once carried in plastic bags. The Memory Box Project is a community outreach program that provides families with a hand-painted box for remembrances of a child lost to miscarriage, stillbirth or neonatal death. The beautifully decorated boxes are provided to hospitals requesting them such as Health Park, Gulf Coast, Sarasota Memorial, Shands and the Medical Center in Gainesville and Northside in Atlanta.

Art exhibitions in the Library’s gallery are sponsored by the Friends of Cape Coral Library and are designed to afford local artists the opportunity to share their work in this public forum without fees or commissions. Library visitors of all ages benefit from this varied, visual cultural experience. Cape Coral Library is located at 921 SW 39th Terrace, off Mohawk Pkwy.
