Maxwell Elementary School “Food 2 Go 4 Kids” program

This year, St. Matthias has been participating in a program that provides weekend lunches for elementary school children who, due to conditions of

poverty, do not receive adequate food on weekends due to finances and family conditions. Since our school buildings closed in mid-March, we’ve been contacted by the school district 2 times to provide lunches for children in need. On April 17 and May 22, we delivered 50 lunches to the school district, who then distributed those lunches to the children. We’d like to thank everyone who has donated to our “Food 2 Go 4 Kids” fund, which has provided the funds to facilitate this program. And we’d also like to thank Stacy Moore, who has helped to lead this program during our time away from our church building. Please feel free to call Pastor Paul at (724) 837-6212 if you have any questions about this important ministry.

I hope that you and your families are safe and well. This has been a difficult time for each of us, in many different ways. One of

those difficulties has been our inability to gather together for worship. Please be assured that we hope to return to worship in our church building as soon as possible. Our Church Council has been meeting via Zoom videoconference calls to discuss our various ministries, as well as how and when we can return to worshipping together in person. Year one we had 12 garden plots , year two 18, year three 20, now in starting year four we have 24 garden plots that have all been taken! Pastor Paul was able to get us a $1300.00 grant from SW PA

Synod of the ELCA to pay for fencing in the entire garden. Many gardeners had issues with deer

enjoying their garden more than they did. Several gardeners expressed concerns about coming back

this year, the fencing should help solve the problem. With a combination of 12 church

members and gardeners we installed 440 ft. of 5 ft. high fencing and 3 gates in 3 hours. I would like to thank and acknowledge those who helped. Pastor

Paul, Jeff Sano, Jim Frye, Andrew Harrold, Fred & Bobbie Oestreicher, Mike & Nicole Oestreicher,

Erik & Jamie Lepore, Dennis Skiffington and Dom Petrarca. The fencing should help increase the total

harvest. We will continue to supply the Westmoreland County Food Bank this summer and hopefully share the harvest with the congregation.

Congratulations Madison!!

We'd like to wish heartfelt congratulations to our graduating senior, Madison Sano, who is

graduating from Hempfield High School with several achievements and honors. She's also active in our church's choir, has assisted with Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, and served as an acolyte and usher. She's also sung several beautiful songs during worship, and provided wonderful pieces for our online worship on Mother's Day and Memorial Day. We are so proud of Madison, and wish her the best of luck in all of her future endeavors. God's peace and blessings be with you, Madison!

Cleaning Committee In an effort to conserve our financial resources, our congregation has started cleaning the church with the help of our own members. So far,

we have enough members to cover nine weeks. We certainly would appreciate more volunteers. It actually isn’t very hard work. We have a list of what needs done and all the supplies to do the cleaning are in the janitor’s room. Anyone willing to help out, please contact Pastor Paul or the church office! Thank you!

MARCH 2020 MINUTES Voting Council members Andrew Harrold, Fred Oestreicher, Bob Wolff, and Pastor Paul were in attendance, which constitutes a quorum. Sharon Marks, Norb Georges, and Wayne Himler were absent. Also in attendance was our Treasurer, Eldora Crist, and our Financial Secretary, Eliot Moore. Fred Oestreicher led devotions at 7:00pm. Council Vice President, Fred Oestreicher, called the meeting to order at 7:03pm. The agenda was reviewed. Bob Wolff made a motion to approve the agenda, as presented. Motion se-conded by Andrew Harrold. Motion carried. The minutes from the February 10 Council meeting were reviewed. Bob Wolff made a motion to approve the minutes, as presented. Motion seconded by Andrew Harrold. Motion carried. Eldora Crist, Treasurer, pre-sented the Treasurer’s report. Pastor Paul made a motion to approve the Treasurer’s report. Motion seconded by Bob Wolff. Motion carried. Pastor Paul presented his report for February. His verbal report included home visits with Evelyn Malinish and nursing home visits with Lillian Reno and Virginia Turner. He also attended the Greensburg Ministerial meeting, the Synod Assembly Plan-ning Committee meeting, the Food 2 Go 4 Kids collection session, the Lutheran Summer Work Camp Planning meeting, led Thurs-day Lenten mid-day worship at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Greensburg, and is leading a Lenten Adult Bible Study on Wednesday evenings, and First Holy Communion classes for 3 middle school youth. Communications: Letter from Mission Endowment Fund Board A letter was received confirming our approval for a $1300 grant from the Synod’s Mission Endowment Fund to build a fence for our Community Garden. In addition, Harrold Zion Lutheran Church had submitted a proposal for $2000 for the Food 2 Go 4 Kids fund. This was also approved, and Harrold Zion indicated their intention is to provide $1000 of those funds to St. Matthias’ “Food 2 Go 4 Kids” fund. Concerns: Fred Oestreicher reported that some shingles have fallen off the roof. We’ll ask Barry Santavy for a referral of a roofing professional to assess the situation. ** Committee Reports were presented** ** Old Business ** 1. Updated Internal Audit (see handout) The 2019 internal audit was approved at our February Council meeting. Since a small revision was made during the presentation, Council was presented with the updated version at our March Council meeting, for documentation purposes. 2. Recruiting Voting Members for the June 2020 Synod Assembly This year, each congregation may send up to 3 lay voting members to Synod Assembly. Pastor Paul asked Council to consider per-sons who may be good candidates to attend. This year’s assembly is being held at Indiana University of PA (IUP) from June 12-14. Because we realize that some congregational members may not be able to attend the 10:30am Synod-wide worship at IUP, and since there will be no Sunday morning worship at St. Matthias on June 14, we’re tentatively scheduling a 3pm Sunday afternoon worship service at St. Matthias on June 14. More formal plans will be announced after we gather more information from the congregation. 3. Community Garden Fencing At our February Council meeting, Fred Oestreicher provided a handout detailing plans to provide fencing for the Community Gar-den, which would provide viable fencing for approximately 10 years. We received the $1300 from the Synod’s Mission Endowment Fund to fund the fencing. Fred would like to receive Council’s permission to move forward with this project, since all necessary funding is now available. Andrew Harrold made a motion to approve Fred Oestreicher’s proposal for the fencing project, to be com-pleted in spring 2020, using the Community Garden funds. Motion seconded by Bob Wolff. Motion carried. 4. Safety in the Church A tentative date of June 7 has been scheduled to hold a “Lunch and Learn” program at St. Matthias after worship to pass along safety information and protocols for St. Matthias. More details will be provided as plans are made. ** New Business ** 1. ELCA Foundation Documents (see handouts) In 2017, Ryan Ebner from the ELCA Foundation had worked with the Finance Committee and Church Council at St. Matthias to put together planned giving documents. Council began reviewing these documents again to see if we’d like to move forward with those efforts. More details will be provided after Council has time to review the information. ** End of New Business ** The April calendar and Worship Assistants were reviewed, and no updates were necessary. The next Council meeting will be on Monday, April 6, at 7pm. The deadline for the April newsletter is March 9. Since Sharon Marks was scheduled to lead devotions this evening, but was unable to attend, she has been assigned to lead devotions at the April Council meeting. Bob Wolff made the motion to adjourn the meeting. Motion seconded by Andrew Harrold. Motion carried. Meeting adjourned at 8:02pm. Respectfully submitted, Pastor Paul Gruesu

APRIL 2020 MINUTES ** Due to safe distancing practices related to the coronavirus, the April 2020 Council meeting was held via a Zoom Conference call. Voting Council members Sharon Marks, Andrew Harrold, Fred Oestreicher, Bob Wolff, Norb Georges, Wayne Himler, and Pastor Paul were in attendance No voting members were absent. Also in attendance was our Financial Secretary, Eliot Moore. Our Treas-urer, Eldora Crist, was unable to attend. Pastor Paul led devotions at 8:00pm. Council President, Sharon Marks, called the meeting to order at 8:04pm. The agenda was reviewed. The date of the May Council meeting was updated to May 11. Fred Oestreicher made a motion to approve the agenda, as amended. Motion seconded by Wayne Himler. Motion carried. The minutes from the March 9 Council meeting were reviewed. Fred Oestreicher made a motion to approve the minutes, as presented. Motion seconded by Wayne Himler. Motion carried. Eliot Moore, Financial Secretary, presented the Treasurer’s report. Bob Wolff made a motion to approve the Treasurer’s report. Motion seconded by Fred Oestreicher. Motion carried. Pastor Paul mentioned his March report would be detailed under New Business Item 1.Communications: None Concerns: None ** Committee Reports were presented ** ** Old Business ** 1. June 2020 Synod Assembly This year’s Synod assembly, to be held at Indiana University of PA (IUP) from June 12-14, has been postponed until the fall. No other details are available at this time. Therefore, we don’t need recruit voting members at this point. 2. Community Garden Fencing & Open House The Community Garden Open House was held on April 4th. All 20 garden plots have been chosen. Plowing will be done around the end of April, and the fencing materials are being delivered now, and will be installed in May. At our February Council meeting, Fred Oestreicher provided a handout detailing plans to provide fencing for the Community Garden, which would provide viable fencing for approximately 10 years. We received approval for the $1300 from the Synod’s Mission Endowment Fund to fund the fencing. At the March Council meeting, Council approved Fred Oestreicher’s proposal for the fencing project, to be completed in spring 2020, using the Community Garden funds. 3. Safety in the Church A tentative date of June 7 has been scheduled to hold a “Lunch and Learn” program at St. Matthias after worship to pass along safety information and protocols for St. Matthias. More details will be provided as we learn more about how soon we can gather as a con-gregation. 4. ELCA Foundation documents Council decided to table this item until we’re able to have a more detailed discussion. ** New Business ** 1. Providing printed or online worship materials Pastor Paul and our secretary Amy have made 2 lists for our parishioners: those who have internet access and would like to view things online, and those who prefer printed materials. In this way, we hope to provide daily and weekly devotional and worship ma-terials for all those in our congregation. For those who prefer printed materials, we have provided them with a large print daily devo-tional booklet (currently covering the months April – June, and a subsequent copy will cover July – September). In addition, each week, we prepare and mail a printed version of Sunday’s gospel lesson and Pastor Paul’s sermon. Pastor Paul has also been able to hand deliver some of these materials, while keeping appropriate distance. For those who prefer to view things on the internet, each week, we update our St. Matthias website with that weekend’s worship materials. Pastor Paul prepares a video with his sermon, and our organist and choir director, Chuck, provides a music file with an appropriate hymn. We also have a daily liturgy available on the website as well. Each week, our secretary Amy updates the website by putting the most recent videos on the home page, and places the previous week’s materials on the “archive online worship” tab on the website. We also occasionally mail (or email) updates to the congregation, to keep the informed of congregational news. 2. Government Payroll Loan Opportunity There is an opportunity to get a loan (that will become a grant) to provide 2.5 month’s worth of payroll funds for the congregation. Our Financial Secretary, Eliot Moore, will look into this. 3. Church Database software Our church database software was having difficulty recently, and John and Tina Weimer graciously updated the computer to correct the problem. After discussion with John and Tina, Pastor Paul mentioned that we might want to look for a long term solution for a different provider of church database software, so that John won’t have to continually provide service to our database. Eliot Moore, Teri Frye, and Pastor Paul will look into this. 4. CPR Class Request Pastor Paul asked if he could add a New Business item, which was granted. This week, he received a request from Nation’s Best CPR to hold a class on April 23rd. Due to the current PA government restrictions regarding groups of people meeting together in person, the consensus of Council is to inform Nation’s Best CPR that we can’t host CPR classes until further notice. Pastor Paul will share this message with Nation’s Best CPR. ** End of New Business ** The May calendar and Worship Assistants were not reviewed, as we’re waiting to see how soon we’ll be able to meet together for worship at the church building. The next Council meeting will be on Monday, May 11, at 7pm. If the same safe distancing practices are still in effect, the Council meeting will be held via a Zoom Conference call again. The May newsletter won’t be produced until we’re able to determine when we can resume church activities. Sharon Marks volunteered to lead devotions for the May Council meeting. Andrew Harrold made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Motion seconded by Wayne Himler. Motion carried. Meeting adjourned at 9:01pm. Respectfully submitted, Pastor Paul Gruesu

MAY 2020 MINUTES ** Due to safe distancing practices related to the coronavirus, the May 2020 Council meeting was held via a Zoom Conference call. Voting Council members Sharon Marks, Fred Oestreicher, Bob Wolff, Norb Georges, Wayne Himler, and Pastor Paul were in at-tendance Andrew Harrold was absent. Also in attendance was our Financial Secretary, Eliot Moore. Our Treasurer, Eldora Crist, was unable to attend. Pastor Paul led the Council in prayer at 7:00pm. Council President Sharon Marks called the meeting to order at 7:03pm. The agenda was reviewed. Fred Oestreicher made a motion to approve the agenda, as presented. Motion seconded by Norb Georges. Eliot Moore, Financial Secretary, presented the Treasurer’s report. Fred Oestreicher made a motion to approve the Treasurer’s report. Motion seconded by Norb Georges. Motion carried. Pastor Paul presented his report for April. His verbal report included attending a weekly zoom call with our Synodical Bishop and the Pastors of our Synod, where they discuss issues related to being the church and managing worship, pastoral care, and congregation management. Pastor Paul also continues to provide a weekly printed version of Sunday’s gospel lesson and Pastor Paul’s sermon to those who don’t have internet access. He continues to hand deliver some of these materials, while keeping appro-priate distance. He also continues providing a weekly video containing the lessons and the sermon on our St. Matthias website. Our organist and choir director, Chuck, also provides a music file with an appropriate hymn. We also have a daily liturgy available on the website as well. Each week, our secretary Amy updates the website by putting the most recent videos on the home page, and places the previous week’s materials on the “archive online worship” tab on the website. We also provide a weekly email to keep the congregation updated and to let them know when the website has new information. Communications: None Concerns: During the week of April 13-17 (the week after Easter Sunday), our secretary Amy had difficulty uploading the weekly video files onto our St. Matthias website. She contacted Tech Support, who were able to identify that it was a problem with the host software. They provided her an email claiming to have fixed the problem, but it wasn’t fixed. Through her own research and crea-tivity, Amy was able to figure out a different way to upload videos to our website. While it looks like this problem is temporarily solved, we’ll closely watch to see if any other issues arise, and if so, what we may need to do to find a better platform, if necessary. On May 6th, Pastor Bob Marks contacted Pastor Paul about a letter he received from Otterbein United Methodist Church asking him to clarify whether he was still a member of their congregation. Pastor Bob has never been a member, and has never made a donation there. In Pastor Paul’s weekly email to our congregation on May 7th, he asked the congregation members to let him know if they received similar correspondence. Pastor Paul will contact our brothers and sisters in Christ at Otterbein United Methodist Church to help clarify their recordkeeping. ** Committee Reports were given ** ** Old Business was reviewed ** ** New Business ** 1. Food 2 Go 4 Kids request Through a special request that we received on May 2nd from Hempfield Area School District (and passed through our project organ-izer, Pastor John Smaligo of Harrold Zion Lutheran Church), our congregation is being asked to provide 50 bags (filled with the nor-mal contents, and not doubling, as occurred in April) on May 22nd for the “Food 2 Go 4 Kids” program. In April, the cost of provid-ing double the contents was approximately $400. As of the end of April, we have $433 in the “Food 2 Go 4 Kids” fund, and will also be receiving a check for $1,000 from the Synod’s Mission Endowment Fund to go directly into this fund as well. Therefore, we should have no problem meeting this request for May 22nd. 2. Epidemiologist’s report As part of Pastor Paul attending a weekly zoom call with our Synodical Bishop and the Pastors of our Synod, he was able to listen to a presentation from Alexander Sundermann, an epidemiologist and member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in downtown Pittsburgh. Alex’s degrees include a Master of Public Health (MPH) and Certification in Infection Prevention and Control (CIC). Alex provided a presentation and answered questions from our pastors. (Please note: The following is Pastor Paul’s interpretation of what he heard from Alex). Some of the general information Alex provided included: it’s generally believed that COVID-19 may survive on a sur-face for approximately 3 days. Therefore, when considering activities in a church building, care should be taken to disinfect appro-priate surfaces, especially if a group will be returning to the church within 3 days of a previous church activity (i.e. Saturday evening worship followed by Sunday morning worship, etc.). Disease control specialists generally recommend that those attending a church activity should write their name on a sign-in sheet. If anyone attending a church activity subsequently becomes ill, it’s recommend-ed that they contact the church, so that the church can contact the others who also attended to inform them that someone in attend-ance (the name of the ill person doesn’t need to be mentioned) has become ill. All those in attendance with the person who became ill would then be subject to the recommended 14 day quarantine period, to help prevent them from possibly spreading the disease to others. This would also place the church building in a 14 period quarantine period as well. Contrary to popular belief, worshipping in an outdoor setting is not an effective means of preventing the transmission of the disease. It’s possible for those who have been previously infected with COVID-19 to be re-infected. In most cases, those who are re-infected tend to have milder symptoms. Some of the activities that make worship most likely to spread the disease are singing and distributing Holy Communion. Singing (with or without a mask) produces a much higher concentration of particles in the air, and sharing bread or wine in Holy Communion (even if done on an individual basis) presents a host of transmission issues. If someone is tested for COVID-19 and the results show antibodies (a resistance to the disease), it shouldn’t be considered safe for that person to visit those who are vulnerable. Therefore, determining who would be safe “home communion visitors” to shut ins would be imprecise, at best. Please note: Alex isn’t a medi-cal doctor and doesn’t work for a hospital, so his responses were shared from his own professional perspective, and not as a spokes-person for a corporation. The consensus from Council is to wait until the state of PA goes into the green phase before considering returning for worship. This doesn’t mean that we’ll automatically have worship once the green phase commences, but we will then

MAY 2020 MINUTES CONTINUED begin considering when to return to face to face worship. In the meantime, Council will review the document from Bishop Kus-serow titled “Bishop’s Counsel for Opening Congregations” so that we can discuss what policies and procedures we’d like to have in place before returning to worship. These policies and procedures would be shared with the congregation ahead of time, so that eve-ryone would be aware and could decide for themselves if they feel comfortable with attending face to face worship. We’ll discuss this document and begin the process of creating policies and procedures at our June Council meeting. 3. Pastor Paul’s health checkup in June Pastor Paul is scheduled for his yearly prostate cancer checkup in Sarasota, Florida, on June 2nd. Since he previously had prostate cancer, it’s extremely important that he attends his yearly checkup. He will be flying to Florida, staying in a hotel, and visiting the doctor’s office. Considering the potential risk of contracting COVID-19 while visiting these various places, and wanting to protect any staff or congregational members from infection, Pastor Paul asked Council if he should quarantine himself from the church building for 14 days after returning to Greensburg. This would be a period from Wed., June 3rd (day of return) through and including Tuesday, June 16th. In the interim, Pastor Paul could still provide his weekly sermons (and videos) from his home, and attend any conference calls (including our Council meeting on June 8th) and handle any other correspondence. The consensus of Council is to confirm Pastor Paul’s suggestion of going into a self-quarantine from the church building after return-ing from his doctor’s appointment in Florida. ** End of New Business ** The June calendar and Worship Assistants were not reviewed, as we’re waiting to see how soon we’ll be able to meet together for worship at the church building. The next Council meeting will be on Monday, June 8, at 7pm. If the same safe distancing practices are still in effect, the Council meeting will be held via a Zoom Conference call again. The June newsletter will include the March and April Council minutes, as well as the March and April financial information. We’ll also include a general update on what Council is working on, and how our ministries continue to serve those in need. Pastor Paul will lead prayer for devotions for the June Council meeting. Fred Oestreicher made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Motion seconded by Wayne Himler. Motion carried. Meeting ad-journed at 8:28pm. Respectfully submitted, Pastor Paul Gruesu

It’s been almost a year this February since we met to plan the Lily Project. While we cannot share the identity of those who receive Lily Project help, we can share a couple of stories about the circumstances under which The Lily Project has come to the rescue. Waiting for help in the Emergency Room a woman suffered a miscar-riage. Her clothing became saturated in blood. The Lily Project came to her aid. You may have heard about the nasty auto accident on the PA Turnpike between Donegal and New Stanton on Sunday morning January 5. The crash involved a number of vehicles including a tour bus. When the rescue teams arrived, they found the people on the bus and their belongings saturated with diesel oil. Some of the vic-tims were treated at Excela Emergency Rooms. Our Lily Project again was able to help. These rescues and other incidents have left our inventory depleted.

The Lily Project News Update – Winter, 2020

The SWPA Synod Convention in June has been cancelled and they hope to reschedule in the fall.
