“Education…..means emancipation. It means light and liberty. It means the uplifting of the soul of
man into the glorious light of truth, the light by which men can only be made free.”
Frederick Douglass
Dads and Donuts
Tuesday, December 18, 2012 was a special day at our school. There were dads, uncles,
grandfathers, big brothers, and Godfathers galore! You could feel the excitement in the air as
each student sat in the breakfast room with his or her
favorite male role model. Laughter filled the room
many times from the students and adults.
Holiday Program – Friday, December 14, 2012
Mr. Johnson and the WOW Music Department held their
Holiday Music Program on December 14, 2012 at 12:30 PM.
Parents, student s and WOW Staff members jammed the
cafeteria in anticipation of presentations to be made by the
WOW Concert Band, The Vessels of Honor, and The WOW
Fourth Grade Choir as
well as selected
singers from grades 1-
3.
The WOW Concert Band, consisting of 35
beginning and intermediate students from the 5th
through 8th
grades, started the program. They played
several holiday selections including, “A Mozart
Melody”, “Ode to Joy” and “Jolly Old St. Nick,”
among others. The band did a fine job and the crowd
loved it. Mr. Johnson, the new WOW Band Director,
was very pleased with his students’ performance. He said that the students did well and that he
looks forward to next musical performance at WOW!
When the band finished playing, the curtains closed and the band exited the stage. Then, the
wonderful Vessels of Honor performed and thrilled the audience with two very worshipful
selections.
Following VOH, the WOW Fourth Grade Choir took the stage and presented a classic holiday
selection entitled, “Do You Hear What I Hear.” After that, 32, selected 1st and 2nd
grade
students performed “Jingle Bells” and “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” with great skill. The
4th
grade choir returned to the stage and blessed us with two more selections. They sang a piece
from the Broadway Musical, The Sound of Music, entitled “My Favorite Things,” and finished
their part of the show with a beautiful gospel version of “Away in a Manger.”
The final group to perform consisted of two 3rd
grade general
music classes and they rocked the house! The musical selection,
“Go, Tell it on the Mountain,” featured three soloists; Isis Rucker,
Shanea Tennie and Zoue Eke. The girls sang up a storm and
brought the crowd to their feet. Due to time constraints, we had to
conclude the show to end our school day.
What a great show of support and enthusiasm shown by the
students and parents for our great school, World of Wonder!

Looking Ahead Spring Break Monday, March 25, 2013 through Monday, April 1, 2013. Students and staff
RETURN on Tuesday, April 2, 2013
Christmas on Campus
On December 7, forty-three first and second grade students returned to school at 4 pm. They
were greeted by students from the University of Dayton and given a wristband with their name
and school. Students boarded busses at 4:45 headed to a winter wonderland at the University
where they were met by their UD buddy for the evening. WOW students were treated to snacks
and refreshments, participated in games and face painting, watched the lighting of the huge tree
on campus and greeted the arrival of Santa. Each child also received a nice gift from their UD
buddy. Forty-three very tired children returned to WOW at 9 pm to be greeted by their family
members and escorted home for the night. We are grateful to the University and their students
who sponsor this event annually for our children.
From the Media Center
Enjoy listening to books on the computer. We have a web site available to our students from any
internet ready computer. The web address is www.MyCapstoneLibrary.com Students will put
in a user name: residence and a password: books This will open a set of books, most of
which are AR leveled books that support the school reading program. Students can listen to
these books at home, write down the title, and take the quiz at school.
Kindergarten Disaster Averted. Gingerbread Boy Found
The Kindergarten classes have been studying the
Gingerbread Boy. They learned all his tricks and
can sing his song, yet when he came to visit their
class, they couldn’t catch him when he ran away.
The students looked all over the school and found
clues of his travels. There were gingerbread
crumbs on window sills, and bags of gingerbread
babies left in rooms. Finally, Mr. Moreland
checked the security cameras and found him in the
preschool room. Mrs. Berro creped in and was able
to grab him before he ran out. The students were so
happy to see him. Mrs. Carey put him in a box and taped it shut to keep the Gingerbread Boy
safe until Monday, but he is sneaky and escaped again. He was not found in the school but he
did leave cookies for the children. All’s well that ends well.

Holiday Fun
For the second year in a row, all our first graders are enjoying new hats, gloves and scarves.
The hats and scarves are lovingly made by a group of South Dayton women. This year Mrs.
Deanna Kissell, Mrs. Linda Mannarino and Ms. Karen Gump presented the gifts to our students
at a party they hosted with Mrs. Ireland and her daughter Olivia. The children enjoyed holiday
Bingo, made crepe paper wreaths and feasted on yummy cupcakes. Thank you to these generous
women for making the holidays so special for our young students.

Greetings from the 5th Grade ELA/ SS class! This
quarter will be busy, busy, busy as we are beginning
our intense review for the spring Ohio Achievement
Assessment. Every week, your student will be
responsible for completing an OAA inspired
homework packet that reviews the concepts and skills
that appear frequently on the test. We ask that you are
working with your students on those skills. Attached
to each homework packet, will be a list of all the skills
that the students will be focusing on in that weeks
homework. Also, we have 10 available spots
remaining for FREE TUTORING on Wednesdays and
Saturdays. If you're interested in your child receiving

Ms. Andrews’ News
We are off to a great start for our third
quarter! Our students took their STAR
reading test for Accelerated Reading and
almost all of the students in my class saw
their reading levels go up! Great job 4th
graders…keep reading! We will be taking
our NWEA Reading and Math tests during
the 2nd
and 3rd
weeks of January. Our focus
for this quarter is to get ready for the Ohio
Achievement Assessment that the students
will take in April. Please make sure your
child does their homework packet each week
as these assignments are great practice for the
test!
Mrs. Koth’s News
Happy New Year! As we begin the
second semester we will be taking
the NWEA reading and math test.
these test will show how much pro-
gress we have made this year. The
information will also help us focus
on skills that we still need to work on.
Congratulations to Qu’ran Richardson
and Serina Grove, these two students
made the most gains on their NWEA
test. Qu’ran increased his score by 15
points and Serina increased her score
by 13 points. Please make sure your
child is doing their homework and
practicing their multiplication facts.
Third Grade Look What We’re Studying
As we get closer to the OAA, one of our main goals to expose the students to the format of
what the test will look like. In Literacy Block and in Math Block we are focusing on
answering short answer questions (which are worth 2pts) and extended response questions
(4pts). We have found that a lot of the students get these types of questions wrong. So our
goal is to give the students strategies as to how to answer these questions. In math please
continue to review multiplication and division skills with your students. The students are
taking weekly timed multiplication. In math, we are getting reading to work on Fractions.
The students will work on understanding fractions as whole number, they are going to
compare fractions, they are going to look at fractions on the number line, they are also
going to work on equivalent fractions. Please make sure you review these skills daily with
your child. If your child is not fluent with their addition facts please continue to review
those facts as well on a daily basis.

Family Reading Ideas…
Give the Gift of Time
When kids are reading, we often jump in to make corrections very quickly. Try just waiting to
see if they correct themselves. You will be surprised at the number of times that they make
changes without your help, and it will give them more confidence in their ability as a reader.
When reading together, it is fun to discuss the story and
ask questions about your child’s response to the book.
Remember to give kids plenty of time to respond to
questions. As adults, we process questions more quickly
than children do. You will discover that the answers you
get will be worth the wait. This tip was found on The
Children’s Reading Foundation website.
Family Math Ideas…
Grocery Store Math
Ask for help weighing the produce. Ask your child to
estimate how much each item weighs, then check these
estimations.
Have your child keep a tally as you pick up items, and see
how well they've added prices and estimated total cost
when you get to the checkout. This exercise is for children
who have already grasped the concept of addition. Start
with a small amount of purchases, then gradually work
your way up to larger-sized shopping trips.

Mrs. Wilson’s Sixth Grade
Mrs. Wilson’s 6th
grade students were challenged this
quarter in Social Studies to select a country, research
information pertaining to their specific country in order to
write a report and create a power point presentation. The
information required included: basic country information,
their country’s government, climate/weather and culture.
One very interesting aspect that many students and their
families enjoyed was the creation of their country’s flag
in a non-traditional way! This picture is DeFranko’s
portrayal of his flag for the country of South Africa. He
and his mother Theonita Steward (school secretary at
Kemp pre-k-8) created the most delicious cake that was
not only creative but also yummy! There were several other students who also contributed tasty
treats and they were: Ashley, Quenea, and Shelly! Lest we forget Delvin who created his flag of
Italy using pasta sauce, spaghetti and green peppers (not edible, but WOW!) Ultimately, the goal
of learning more about different countries of the world’s geographic locations, political
divisions, government, climate, and culture was ACHIEVED! Way to go sixth graders who put
in the work to make this pretty arduous process successful and educational!
Natural Disaster Kits
Students from Mrs. Johnigan's and Mrs. Coulter's classroom were
creating their natural disaster kits for
their families. They spent the month of
December studying natural disasters and
the impact they have. Students ended the
unit with creating a disaster kit that
contained "symbols" of the important
items that every disaster kit should have.
Students also listened to guest speaker from Montgomery
County who discussed how students can be prepared for a disaster in our Dayton area!
