  • Brethren-I wanted to take just a moment to let you know how about the amazing things that are happening in

the South Texas Learning Center, here at the Scottish Rite. I know you will be as pleased as I am at the progress

and plans for this year and the years ahead. Here are but a few:

Academic Language Therapy Classes for Children

Students between 2nd and 6th grades who are dyslexic and have been accepted for therapy attend the

Learning Center's Academic Language Therapy classes five days a week for one hour each day in the

afternoon, for approximately two years. Classes run concurrent with the San Antonio Independent School

District's school calendar. This service is provided at no cost to the student or the student's family and is

covered through the generous support of San Antonio and South Texas-area Scottish Rite Masons and other

contributors. Students receive instruction in the Take Flight curriculum, which was written by the Luke Waites

Center for Dyslexia and Language Disorders of Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children (TSRHC) in Dallas for use

by academic language therapists with children seven years or older with developmental dyslexia.

    Evaluations for Dyslexia

The Learning Center also offers educational evaluations for dyslexia for individuals of all ages. As of June 2008,

the Learning Center began implementation of the assessment model used by the famed Texas Scottish Rite

Hospital for Children in Dallas. Under this assessment model, the Learning Center tests a variety of abilities,

including intelligence, oral language, visual and motor performance, phonological processing and academic

skills with an emphasis on reading. The evaluations are done at the Learning Center and take approximately

four hours to complete. After a report has been written, an appointment is scheduled with the parents to

review the evaluation. Before leaving the consultation, the family is provided with a copy of the report. “With

the implementation of similar testing methods, the Scottish Rite Learning Center will be fully equipped to

measure the cognitive and academic factors that are key to planning instruction in accordance with criteria

contained in the Texas Dyslexia Law.

Benefits of the Scottish Rite Dyslexia Program

The program helps to retain students in regular educational programs and often allows them to avoid being

qualified as learning disabled and placed in special education. The curriculum enables students with dyslexia

to pass the TAKS and other high stakes tests, often for the first time. Students who complete this course of

instruction are more likely to maximize their potential in higher education. The National Institutes of Health have

found that 35% of identified learning-disabled individuals will encounter problems with the criminal justice

system within five years of leaving high school either as a dropout or a "push out." The program helps lower the

dropout rate and prevents students from failing a grade.

Other plans for the future: Summer fun with “Camp Success”! A full day of learning fun for emergent readers

and students needing/wanting remediation for reading, writing and listening skills. Teacher certification classes

began last year with more participation expected this year.

Look for more activities from The South Texas Learning Center! Until then, I remain…. Fraternally,

    Dr. James Walker Todd

Words to live by: You may be deceived if you trust too much,

but you will live in torment if you do not trust enough. Dr. Frank Crane

Have you considered making a donation to the

    Scottish Rite Library and Museum?

Our Beautiful Building is over 80 yrs old and needs

constant care and repairs. We need your support!

With your support we can keep this building in

good condition. Without your support you will get

to watch this building crumble apart.

Consider, leaving a bequest in your will, a Life

Insurance Policy or even Gifts of Stocks and

securities. Contact the Office for assistance.

Sovereign Grand Inspector General of Texas

    MORGAN DOUGLAS ADKINS, 33°

Addresses the San Antonio Scottish Rite at the March Stated

Meeting. His positive message was encouraging and inspiring.

  • Brother Harry Sinco is our

    latest Graduate of the

    Master Craftsman Program.

    Congratulations!!

By the way, Brother Harry is 91 years young.

The Scottish Rite Players are a cast of actors dedicated to helping the San Antonio Scottish Rite reach its full potential as the “University of

Freemasonry” in South Texas. As a home to future Laurence Oliviers, Jack Nicholsons, Marlon Brandos and Robert DeNiros (and the occasional

Brad Pitt and George Clooney), participation in the Players offers a creative outlet for those who tend to watch “Hamlet” or “A Streetcar Named Desire” or “Raging Bull” or "Oceans 11, 12 (or) 13" or

"Tombstone" and say…”Heck, I could do that!” , you can now!

Our first annual Concealed Handgun course was a BIG success.

On Saturday the 21st we had a great day at the Scottish Rite

    Shutzen Society.

WE found out that Jerry Nowoty was an expert shooter. He shot

with a borrowed handgun and had not shot for over ten years.

He will now be known as "Dead Eye" (He shot with the bad eye and

    got 249 out of 250)

Billy Mitchell our instructor, became a Scottish Rite 32nd degree

Mason on the 28th of February at our first Reunion of 2009.

Congratulations to the both of our Scottish Rite Brothers and to ALL

who turned out for our CHL course.

    Come join in the fun!

  • A GREAT PROGRAM TO CREATE A LIVING MEMORIAL

With the preservation of the San Antonio Scottish Rite Library and Museum, Inc., and its magnificent Cathedral at stake, a great program has been developed which, if adequately supported, can assure the future of this magnificent building.

THE SAN ANTONIO SCOTTISH RITE LIBRARY AND MUSEUM, INC.'S CATHEDRAL ENDOWMENT FUND

The Cathedral Endowment Fund is a fully tax exempt means of saving for the future. The Fund is our principal insurance against inflation, maintenance costs and loss of membership, and is the major means by which we can save our beautiful Cathedral and our Library and Museum for our children's children. Interest earned by the Fund is used to improve, maintain, repair and support the Cathedral, to preserve it for the ages.

It is critical to our future that the Fund continues to grow, for as the Cathedral ages, the cost of maintenance and improvement also grows. Non-taxable contributions of any amount are most gratefully received. Membership in the Million Dollar Club can be obtained for $1,000.00, either in cash, pledge or bequest through a will or insurance policy. Each leaf on the "Tree of Life" in the Hall of Honor attests to the generosity of members and their families.

A beautiful lapel pin and certificate, along with entry on "The Tree of Life", is awarded to Million Dollar Club members.
