September is here. We have gone 3 months with our new participation program and NO WINNER. For those new to the chapter this month, we put all members names into drawing for a chance at a $75 gift card. You must be present to win. If a name is drawn and that person is not present at the meeting, that name goes back into the hat and the gift is added to the next month’s drawing. The current prize is now at $300 in gift cards. The September Ride to Gathering will be the last one for the year. We will ride to Twisted Tail in BeeBeetown, Iowa. July and August were two goods months of riding, which included Day of the HOG, HD Poker Run and the Members only Poker Run. There are some good activities coming up in September. It is not too late for the Ultimate Iowa Road Trip being organized by our editor Joni and her husband. Also remember our Memorial Ride for Chuck Meier who passed away in September of 2015 on one of our rides. We have two memorials in honor of Chuck. There is a Rivet at the Harley Davidson Museum and a Monument being placed near the site of the accident. I would like to thank Shane H. and Tom V. for making these possible. I know I am speaking for the rest of the officers and in saying thank you. Also coming up is our annual LOH cookie run. We will deliver cookies to our volunteer fireman and police officers. This event is scheduled for Sept 11th. These are just a few upcoming rides so keep checking the activities page for new events. If you have any suggestions or ideas for future newsletters please email me at [email protected]

Summer is almost over. I’ve had many things on my plate this year (knee scope included) & have been only able to go on a small number of rides. I was looking forward to the KC ride and was really down at it being canceled due to rain, but safety is a critical matter when riding… As treasurer – we’re looking great, thanks to the participation of each of you. We should be able to have a great Holiday Party this winter. Chuck Meier Fund – Thank you to all those who have donated to this. We ordered the “Memorial Pin” back in June, and have enough left to donate a small amount back to his Family. I’m planning on riding the Chuck Meier Memorial Ride. Hope to see you there…

A HUGE THANK YOU to everyone who participated and volunteered in Day of the HOG. It was a successful event again this year. We had 603 participants in the event and over 2800 raffle tickets were sold. There will be more information that I will present at the chapter meeting in October. This is when we will draw the name for the gift card for those of you who sold a book of tickets. You will have one entry per each book sold in this drawing. Plans are already being made for DOTH 2017 and it’s looking to be a great time. For those of you who volunteered you should have received twenty-five dollars in VIB points in your reward account. If you did not please let myself or Tom know at the dealership. Cooler weather has been popping up so make sure and get out and enjoy the riding time we have left. Hope to see you all soon on the next ride.!

Most of us lead very busy lives and when we get an opportunity to ride We don’t want to waste much time getting to it and it becomes easy to overlook some of the basic safety checks before a ride like the MSF pre-ride checklist, T-CLOCS. As we roll into fall and the temperature starts to swing wider tire pressure is of particular importance but I thought that a full review of the pre-ride checklist might be of value.

T-TIRES & WHEELS Tires Condition Tread depth, wear, weathering, evenly seated, bulges, embedded objects. Front Rear Air Pressure Check when cold, adjust to load. Front Rear Wheels Spokes Bent, broken, missing, tension, check at top of wheel: “ring” = OK — “thud” = loose spoke. Front Rear Cast Cracks, dents. Front Rear Rims Out of round/true = 5mm. Spin wheel, index against stationary pointer. Front Rear Bearings Grab top and bottom of tire and flex: No freeplay (click) between hub and axle, no growl when spinning. Front Rear Seals Cracked, cut or torn, excessive grease on outside, reddish-brown around outside. Front Rear Brakes Function Each brake alone keeps bike from rolling. Front Rear Condition Check pads and discs for wear. Front Rear C-CONTROLS Handlebars Condition Bars are straight, turn freely, handgrips and bar ends are secure. Levers and Pedal Condition Broken, bent, cracked, mounts tight, ball ends on handlebar levers, proper adjustment. Pivots Lubricated. Cables Condition Fraying, kinks, lubrication: ends and interior. Routing No interference or pulling at steering head, suspension, no sharp angles, wire supports in place. Hoses Condition Cuts, cracks, leaks, bulges, chafing, deterioration. Routing No interference or pulling at steering head, suspension, no sharp angles, hose supports in place. Throttle Operation Moves freely, snaps closed, no revving when handlebars are turned.

As we close up the months of July and August, my schedule gets crazier as most of ours do. There are so many great events, you just need to choose which ones to attend. I just returned from a 3500-mile adventure ending in Sturgis. I went Through Nebraska, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada, California; then headed north to Oregon and Washington. I then headed back east through Idaho and Montana, finally dropping into South Dakota. After arriving in the Black Hills, I worked for the ABC Emergency Services. We help bikers that are broken down, lost or in need of any help during the week of Sturgis. This is a free service and have been helping bikers at the Sturgis Rally for over 10 years. This was an epic journey. Photos are shared via Facebook. As I look ahead, we have a lot of events planned. If there is an event that you would like to do or if you have any ideas, please let us know.

The View From the Back of the Bike As a Harley history buff, I got quite a treat when I walked into the HOG Pin Stop during Bike Week in Sturgis. The Pin Stop was decorated with many photos of Harley’s proud racing and hill climbing heritage. I hope that everyone who went to Sturgis this year visited the HOG Pin Stop and got to enjoy this thrilling display! Everything was depicted from the early board racing days, to hill climb events, modern day track racing, drag racing and even setting the motorcycle land speed record (177 mph) at the Bonneville Salt Flats. I wandered around the display, taking it all in, along with photos for about an hour before Mary reminded me that there were other things to do in Sturgis too! Enjoy the photos – I trust that H-D won’t mind me sharing them with fellow HOG Members in our Chapter Newsletter.
