The day was perfect with some light clouds to provide shade over the open area that Solomon's had set up for the class. The original class was limited to 10 participants however we ended up with 13 excited folks. We started with some basics of screening and wiring the mica 3 by 5 inch pots. The small Nana Junipers were discussed with respect to basic Japanese styles of bonsai. Nikie Hobba and Earl Blackwell were on hand to assist the students with choosing styles for the bush-like little Junipers. We helped the students with limited pruning, wiring, and transplanting the trees into the soil lined pots and wiring them down. The participants were happy with their new hobby and left with an education in this living art and a printed care sheet. Many thanks to Nikie and Earl for their invaluable assistance. I just received a wonderful email thank you from Shari at Solomon's reporting grateful students and the request for another class sometime this fall. I believe our class has stimulated an increased awareness and desire for further experience in our living art.... Richard McKinstry ~ - President’s Message -

- April Meeting -

,At our April meeting, Club Sensei Vince Owyoung, presented a very educational demonstration exemplifying the skills and artistic technique involved in the somewhat simple but very useful procedure of wiring your bonsai. Vince demonstrated that when you twist or crank the wire, copper hardens, however aluminum is more forgiving. Most sizes applied are 1.5 to 4 mm thick. ~

The primary topic of discussion at our April Meeting was our annual club show:Richard McKinstry wi l l be th is years chairperson. The need for volunteers falls upon the responsibility of all members of the MLBC to respond in some faction. All members are asked to display at least ONE tree. There was a vote on whether our show should remain an annual event or biannual. The majority vote was for an annual show and will open on Saturday September 21st for one day only at 10 AM, with the first of two demos starting at 11 AM followed by another demo at

Old Business: The question was brought up as to should our Club offer to pay for outside experts for special presentation and demos? The going rate is $250 plus travel and plant. Moat often the totals run in the $500 range for just one demo presentation. Kathy Owyoung said that GSBF has $500 grants available for “out of the way places” such as ours. Our Club would submit a proposal, and if granted, we would then write an article regarding the presentation. Bob Dean suggested we set up an ad hoc education committee to further

For the “Show and Tell”, segment of our meeting, Doug Lau picked up a variegated elm tree 15 years ago and made it into a “root over rock. He

explained h o w h e glued two r o c k s toge ther to do it. Doug also brought a t i n y a c c e n t plant pot to show that Nikie H o b b a made. It w a s s m a l l e r t h a n a quarter!

E a r l Blackwell brought a Japanese b a r b e r r y b o n s a i t h a t h a s b e e n i n training for only one week and has a very impressive n e b a r i . E a r l indicated t h a t h e paid only $24 for the tree.Mark Donnelly showed his Chinese Elm which he is looking for some help in trimming.Visitor, Donna Pilkington, showed her flowering lilac. ~

Small is BeautifulDoug Lau        Knowing my penchant for small bonsai, Nikie Hobba gave me a teeny, tiny bonsai pot that she made in her college pottery class as a gag gift. The pot measures one inch in diameter and stands 1/2” in height. Well, I p lanted a very small violet in the miniature pot and photographed it for the club to see. Take a look at the pot and compare it with the size of the quarter next to it.        Small can be really beautiful. Thus, if you are a m o n g t h e h u n d r e d s o f millions of visitors to Disneyland who have taken the v e r y p o p u l a r Fantasyland ride, j o i n m e b y humming the “it’s a small world after all” tune!

1 - Watering - Now is the time to take the time to look over your garden on a daily basis and adjust your watering to a summertime schedule. Intense sunshine and a spring breeze can dry-out the soil in a small bonsai pot with-in hours of a light rain shower, so close attention to a proper watering schedule is most certainly necessary to keep your bonsai plants alive and healthy.

2 - Fertilizing - Now is the time to start thinking about the first of 3 fertilizer applications for your bonsai in the upcoming growth season. Please take the time to look over the article in this months newsletter on, “Feeding Your Bonsai” as to where one should start.... I would advise that you start now with a spring application of your favorite 12-6-6. For azaleas, rhododendrons and acid loving plants use your favorite low nitrogen or 0-10-10 fertilizer.

3 - Repotting - Serious repotting or root pruning is not advised at this time of year through early November.

4 - Pruning/Defoliating - As with most all trees in our area, drastic pruning is best accomplished in January, however you may lightly prune excessive small growth as necessary most anytime. Now is the time to defoliate most deciduous trees through mid June.

5 - Styling - Better accomplished in the cold winter months however most any time will work. Remove any old wire that has completed its’ job or may be starting to cut into tender bark and limbs. 6 - Insect disease and critter control -Remove dead plant material. Maintain defensive treatments for fungus. Watch for and treat insect infections and scale. 6 - Propagating - Now is the time for rooting some of your favorite cuttings for new spring growth. 8 - The Sun - Rotate all trees at least once a month to insure even growth from all viewable angles of the tree.

MLBC Newsletter April 2019 - 6 - www.MotherLodeBonsai.org

- Air layering - -While we attempt to delay our own inevitable aging, most bonsai enthusiasts embrace the opposite as it relates to our miniature trees. Specimens looking old and even ancient with

weather -bea ten trunks and twisted limbs are prized and va lued fo r their natural artistic beau t y. Now through the end of May is the time to create your new tree through air layering.

The pr inc ipa l o f layering is to force a tree or branch to form new roots at a cer ta in po in t by i n t e r r u p t i n g t h e stream of nutrients from the existing root system. Try it, you may be quite surprised at what you can achieve through this very simple process. ~

Feeding regularly during the growth season is crucial for your bonsai to survive. Normal trees are able to extend their root system looking for nutrients; bonsai however are planted in rather small pots and need to be fertilized on a regular basis in order to replenish their soil's nutritional content.Basic parts of fertilizer:The three basic elements of any fertilizer are Nitrogen (N), Phosphorous (P) and Potassium (K), with each element serving different purposes. Each & every container of fertilizer sold in the US today must display within its label the Fertilizer Grade, which is known as the National Standard for all fertilizers. This Fertilizer Grade will be displayed with three numbers representing the specific NPK value in every container of fertilizer. LOOK FOR IT! It is a legal guarantee of the content and strength of each of the NPK elements. A general all purpose fertilizer will display the numbers of 5-5-5 or 10-10-10, etc. The larger the number, the stronger the NPK value. A 10-10-10 grade of NPK indicates the presence of 10% (N), Nitrogen, ... 10% (P), Phosphorous, and 10% (K) Potassium. Nitrogen (N) increases growth of leaves and stems, Phosphorus (P) encourages healthy root growth and Potassium (K) encourages the growth of fruits and flowers.Different ratios of NPK are used for different trees at different times of the year, which is very important to take into account when fertilizing your bonsai. From early spring into mid autumn fertilize at least three times. Indoor trees can be fertilized year around. Do not fertilize freshly repotted trees for about a month; also do not fertilize sick trees.Which fertilizer to choose?During early spring use a fertilizer with a relatively high in Nitrogen content, (something like NPK 12-6-6 to boost the tree’s growth. During the summer use a more balanced fertilizer like NPK 10-10-10, while during the autumn use a fertilizer to

harden off the tree for an oncoming winter, like NPK 3-10-10. The mentioned NPK values are ratios, meaning 5-5-5. is in fact no different from 10-10-10 other than the overall strength of the fertilizer. To encourage blooming bonsai to flower, use a fertilizer with a high Potassium (K) content like NPK 6-6-12. For older trees you might want to use fertilizer with a slightly lower Nitrogen (N) content or reduce the quantity of fertilizer applied. As some fertilizers are sold specifically as “Bonsai Fertilizer”, it is however, still fertilizer like any other, so most any fertilizer with the correct NPK value is perfectly fine for your bonsai tree application.Depending on the retention of water within your soil mix, you may choose to use either liquid or solid fertilizer, and lastly, it is very important to follow the application guidelines as stated on the product’s packaging.

How to feed your trees. Feed your bonsai using the quantities and

frequency as stated on the f e r t i l i z e r ’ s p a c k a g i n g . Y o u c a n c h o o s e t o r e d u c e t h e recommended q u a n t i t y s l i g h t l y f o r trees that are

no longer in training to only balance their growth and heath instead of stimulating it. Many growers prefer to use their own personal form of fertilizer and method of use, so if fish heads and epson salts is your way and it works for you, then go for it, but don’t forget to feed your plants at least three times per year during the growth season, and if you want to control the amount and time of year you fertilize, do not use a timed release fertilizer, e.g. Osmocote, etc.. Finally, here is a very important fact to remember when feeding your bonsai: Do not be particularly concerned as to the Brand-Name on the fertilizer package, rather be concerned more as to the three numbers on the package and the intended use for for that specific fertilizer. ~

Does the pot make the tree or does the tree make the pot? After all, bonsai means plant in a shallow pot. In my reading and in practice the pot is not the first consideration. Well, not always, I do have a collection of pots and occasionally I will look for the tree that will go into one of these pots. More commonly, I will be looking at a tree and wonder: Do I have a pot for this? The right pot?

The importance of selecting the right pot to plant your Bonsai in is often underestimated. The pot, (as well as additions like grasses, moss, stones, figurines), are important elements to the composition, and should be chosen carefully to display the primary element, ..”The Tree”.

Selecting The Right Bonsai Pot

Choosing a pot that really suits the tree is difficult, as different variables such as shape, size, glazed or unglazed and color need to be taken into account. Does the pot complement the tree (?), or does the tree complement the pot? Many bonsai students miss this point. If you are selling pots, then of course you would want your pot to overshadow the included plant or tree therein. However, if indeed it is a bonsai composition that you are creating, and not pottery sales, your tree MUST dominate the pot. From experience, the pot is certainly not the first consideration. And finally, it is very important to select a container that is large enough for the tree to sustain its health and to use a pot that is, in terms of design, subordinate to the tree. Remember, simplicity is most often the key. ~
