Seasons Greetings Everyone! We are experiencing a wonderful sense of renewal throughout Glenmont with living the “Life that maketh all things new.” 1

As another very eventful year comes to a close, we are humbled by the progress and spiritual growth that we see around us, including Glenmont’s Board, Staff, Residents and Patients. This is so gratifying.

We’ve seen marvelous healings, two of which you will find within the pages of this Newsletter. Glenmont’s Christian Science Nursing Education Program has served 38 students in 2016. Within these pages, you will find one Christian Science nursing student’s account of how her experience has completely changed her life.

Our renewal continues with the launch of our drive to replace all patient room furnishings. And, we have several spaces within our building newly remodeled; a new beauty shop, our Education prep kitchen, along with re-landscaped grounds around our building. Check out the photos below!

Our Annual Meeting this year was so fruitful with our Speaker, John Rinnert, CS. Some even said it was the best in many years! A copy of Mr. Rinnert’s talk is enclosed within this Newsletter. We promise that it will give your understanding of Christian Science Nursing a sense of renewal, too. The talk can also be downloaded from our website. Please enjoy!

Renewal— Choosing the Medicine of Mind!

We’ve truly felt a sense of renewal this year throughout our facility, with much needed in-house construction and with our new landscaping.

But, the renewal doesn’t stop there. While we have experienced significant new challenges with government regulations, we’ve been able to offer our employees an affordable health insurance plan. This new plan will relieve Glenmont from the IRS penalty for not offering health insurance to our employees, while providing our employees with a health plan where they can avoid a penalty as well. Even with new strict regulations, we have found an answer that has brought resolution to a difficult challenge for all of us.

Our Annual Meeting speaker, John Rinnert, CS, spoke about the choice we have when confronted with material medicine and its effects, whether it be regulations or a physical challenge. I was so inspired by his talk, “Christian Science Nursing: A Miracle on Earth”. We’ve included a copy with this newsletter to in-spire you as well! He shared the biblical healing of the woman who had spent all she had on physicians with no result. Mr. Rinnert reinforced the truths about medicine versus Mind, and choosing the Medicine of Mind (God).

Alfred E. Baker, M.D, C.S.B., wrote in an article titled “A Physician to Physicians” in the August 17, 1899 Christian Science Sentinel, “Jesus Christ was an authority against disease, not on it or for it,” and also later in the article, “In the practice of materia medica, medicine seems to be working, not with man and against disease, but against man and with disease. While materia medica has endeavored to keep pace with disease, it is found that disease has likewise kept pace with materia medica. Material remedies, then, are an enemy to doctor and patient alike.” Even though Dr. Baker wrote this over 110 years ago, it seems as if it was written today.

Mr. Rinnert discusses this concept in his talk when comparing medical nursing with Christian Science nursing. He said, ”…building health with material remedies is not only worthless, but also destructive to our health!”* and “Instead of encouraging thought to pause and consider the spiritual nature of man’s health and harmony, medical nursing only causes us to ruminate over the body. This rumination is the mesmerism which prevents us from moving forward and experiencing true healing.”*

Like the woman who had spent all on physicians and was no better, current costly government regu-lations such as the Affordable Care Act show that faith in material and medical methods is increasingly com-ing to the forefront, and it’s “an infringement on man’s right to think for himself”* as John states. This is what our COP is working for in Washington DC with the EACH Act as well; man’s individual right to think and to choose what will best serve him. As Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Heath, P. vi, “The time for thinkers has come.” We as Christian Scientists courageously stand as thinkers against the current of thought that would take away this right to choose God over medicine.

The ever flowing divine Mind is showing us the way in our Christian Science Nursing practice. Renewal continues as we advocate for the Medicine of Mind only, just as was practiced by Christ Jesus, our Way-shower.

What’s next, Father?”

This is a question that those of us at Glenmont ask regularly, to be sure that we are keeping pace with every priority that is meant to bless and heal.

This past summer, our focus was directed to renewing the grounds around Glenmont--a project that took on the same spiritual impetus that motivates us to nurse our patients with kindness, love and tender care in the patient care rooms. Once we committed to going forward, getting started seemed the biggest hurdle. The scope of the project, along with the summer heat, the dry ground and the overgrown bushes and thistles that had overrun various areas made the project seem daunting.

One day, one of our Christian Science Nurses initiated the effort by pulling weeds in spite of the heat. It was her day off and yet the love for the patients who look out their windows for a sense of beauty and Soul outweighed that concern. Such unselfed love, I thought. This project can be done. Soon we had a small but steady volunteer group ranging from eleven years old and up doing weeding, tree-trimming and removal of overgrown shrubs from mid-August through today.

The transformation of the grounds reminded me that Glenmont and its grounds from one spring to the next, was standing for many years of healing and support. Even in this latest effort to refresh the property, God is always showing that He is making “all things new,” continually proving to me that God cares for every aspect of our ministry.

Someone reading this article may be wondering why the Director of Christian Science Nursing is writing about a “grounds” project. As a liaison to the volunteers, which has been a joy, I found my-self digging some holes for new rose bushes, and ferrying ice water out to the volunteers. More importantly though, God has shown me—again— that nurturing the environment is the role of a Christian Science nurse. It is a reflection of proper care. That role includes the spiritual vision to ensure that what our patients view is what will uplift their thinking to see God’s goodness. The beauty of working as a team is that we can all participate in witnessing God’s transforming love together.

Much sincere and heart-felt gratitude goes out to our volunteers who have been sharing their gardening talents and willing hearts to help with this very important work. The cost savings to Glenmont has been tremendous too for which we are so very grateful.

Thank you dear gardeners!!

Dear Friends,

I’m writing to express my gratitude for the outstanding care given to me almost 2 years ago now….care that was essential to my healing in Christian Science. When I arrived, it seemed I had lost much in my life…my work, my marriage of 30 years (my husband and I were separated and in the middle of a di-vorce), my children had recently gone off to college, and my health failed. I seemed to have some kind of serious malfunction with internal organs, and other physical challenges, that left me unable to walk or even sit up for more than 20-30 minutes at a time without fainting.

The Christian Science nurses and staff were so loving and gentle and immediately put me at ease and made me feel comfortable, welcomed, and loved. They provided me with some clothing to borrow as I had not arrived with all the right clothing I needed. They fed me well and proceeded to give me around-the-clock loving support and expert practical care. I felt from the Christian Science nurses a deep under-standing and trust in God's ability and willingness to heal me and to take care of every need of mine along the way, which was palpable. And so it proved. Within about 4 months, I had progressed from a reclining wheelchair to a regular wheel chair, to a walker, a cane, and then walking independently and caring for myself again.

Every detail of my stay and needs were met so beautifully there, from the kind and good work of house-keeping and laundry services, the kitchen staff, maintenance, to those providing various activities and hymn sings, to the volunteers, to the helpful shopper when I needed supplies, the office staff, to the other patients who had become like “family". I hope I didn’t forget anyone, as I was truly so grateful for every bit of support I received there, day and night, as it all worked together to help in my healing. And daily, in my prayers, did I include gratitude for every bit of goodness around me, for which there was plenty.

I’m more grateful than I can say for all the Christian Science nurses who cared for me, encouraged me, and assisted me with such tenderness and cheerfulness during my stay at Glenmont. I don’t think I un-derstood the importance of cheerfulness as much before until I felt it lift the sense of heaviness and sad-ness I arrived with. The pure Christly goodness of them all was palpable too, and contributed greatly to my healing. It opened my eyes to a much larger sense of God’s love than ever before. I also enjoyed the humor shared with them at different times…another quality I find helpful in healing.

In addition, I learned a lot about forgiveness while I was at Glenmont. I had a precious conversation with one of my Christian Science nurses about this one day, having mentioned that I had learned to forgive my husband. She spoke gently with me, and asked if I had compassion for him. I thought for a second and said no. She said that if I don’t feel compassion for him, then I haven’t completely forgiven him yet. I thought about that a lot over the next several days and she was right. This helped move me to forgive him more completely and in a short while I did feel compassion for him, knowing that he would someday have to work out of his challenges too, and it would likely be a difficult road to travel. This expanded sense of forgiveness was another big aid to my healing progress.

One other thing that was particularly inspiring to me during my stay at Glenmont was being able to watch as the geese and ducks around the grounds had their babies that spring. I remember pondering this and thinking about how Glenmont seemed more like a birthing center to me. I had felt like I had been at Glen-mont to be reborn from a false sense of life in matter, with all its seeming sadness, hurt and troubles, to the true sense of the Life that is God, Good…the only life there really is; the Life that I, and everyone else, express freely, and that is wholly good. This shift in thought and understanding-this rebirth, I believe, was at the center of my healing.

Again, this trust in God’s ability to meet all my needs and move me on at the right time was so lov-ing and freeing, and I believe helped me to demonstrate a lovely unfoldment.

While I was at Glenmont, I had given up my apartment back home, as I could not afford both. I’mso grateful to Glenmont for your understanding and patience while I demonstrated a home to return to even as I was becoming able to walk and care for myself more. Again, this trust in God’s abilityto meet all my needs and move me on at the right time was so loving and freeing, and I believe helped me to demonstrate a lovely unfoldment. It wasn’t long before a friend had offered me theuse of her home for a few months while she was going to be away traveling. This home was in thesame location as I was feeling led by God to head towards, and gave me a home base while Ilooked for a new apartment. My friend had also given me the contact information for the care com-mittee members at the Christian Science church in that area who were ready and happy to help inany way I needed.

Before my departure, there seemed to be a period of time when I felt ready to go, but it was not yet time. So in the heart of prayer, I asked God to show me how to bless others while I’m there. Rightaway an opportunity came up, albeit an unusual and unexpected one. While out on my daily walkwith a Christian Science nurse, the topic of skating came up, as I had been ice skating on a weeklybasis not long before coming to Glenmont and I was looking forward to doing it again. I was asked if I also rollerblade outdoors on pavement and I said yes. This Christian Science nurse said he hadwanted to learn how to do that someday so I offered to teach him. My husband happened to beplanning a visit soon, so after getting permission from the Director of Christian Science Nursing toroller blade around the loop outside, I asked him to bring me my rollerblades, helmet and pads. This enabled me to teach the Christian Science nurse and a couple others there who be-came interested in getting started with rollerblading. What a joy it was to help provide these oppor-tunities for others.

In the year and half since I left Glenmont, my healing progressed to include reconciliation with myhusband and our marriage, restoration of the sale of our home, and a move to a new home in anew community. I have more work to do in Christian Science, as I always will, but I will never for-get the special haven that is Glenmont, and the people that made it that way, where I experiencedso much Christly love and healing. Thank you to all of you dear friends.

With deep love and gratitude,(Name withheld)

P a g e 6

Dear friends, Just about one year ago, in the evening, my mother was out shoveling the driveway and fell on the

ice. It was 11 degrees outside that day and she crawled into the back of the garage as it got dark, unable to stand and not knowing what else to do. She said the thought came to her that she could die there but then a second thought immediately followed that said, “God will take care of me” and she knew she would be safe. She began yelling for help and a neighbor who lived across the street heard her cries as he was snow-blowing his driveway. He came over and helped her into the house.

After learning about her fall and going right over, it quickly became clear to me that we needed some sort of intervention. I called a local Christian Science practitioner who gave us wise words about what Mrs. Eddy says about having bones set. Her calm, clear statements quickly helped devise a wise course of action and my mother ended up going to the emergency room. She stayed in contact with a practitioner during this time.

For the next 24 hours as plans were being made, she was cared for with much love by hospital staff. I was in close contact with a practitioner who was working for my mother and one of the things she said to me was, “I’ll look forward to hearing your inspiration.” But for the next two days, not much inspiration came. There was so much going on at the hospital that I could only hold to the basic truths I knew, that Truth and Love were present with us. I continued to pray and then late in the second day it clearly came to me: “When Mrs. Eddy fell on the ice, she discovered Christian Science.” The immensity of this thought really spoke to me. Witnessing what my mother was having to deal with as the result of the fall, I was deeply touched that Mrs. Eddy, in her extreme situation and before (Christian) Science was even discovered, still turned to God and the Bible for her comfort—even at what was predicted to be the very end of her life. I then said to my mother, “When Mrs. Eddy fell on the ice she discovered Christian Science. I wonder what you will discover?” My mother, however, did not seem inspired by this message like I was and at the time answered me that she really didn’t know.

During the next several weeks, the question about what she was going to discover seemed elusive. There was much temptation to lament things lost and adopt a bleak outlook for the future. My mother knew she could not return to her home and actually didn’t want to, and she tried an assisted living facility near her home but this was clearly not the right answer. She felt that the environment seemed purposeless and she wanted so much more in her life. While our family strongly encouraged her to go to a Christian Science nursing facility on the east coast that felt right to us for many reasons, she was resistant and after many weeks said she kept thinking about Glenmont and felt that would be the right Christian Science facility for her. She said that in her heart it felt comforting, having been familiar with it from my father’s stay there many, many years ago.

Page 7: Volume V, Issue II Page 3€¦ · Volume V, Issue II Fall-Winter 2016 4599 Avery Road Hilliard, Ohio 43026 614/876-0084 Editor: Linda Gray. Renewal— Choosing the Medicine of Mind!

H e a l i n g E x p e r i e n c e C o n t i n u e d

And the rest, they say, is history. Although during the ride to Glenmont my mother seemed filled with trepidation and discouragement about what appeared to be her plight, this all quickly changed. She was greeted with tremendous love, comfort, reassurance and loving attention by the (CS) nurses and staff, who made it clear that she was individually recognized.

There was joy expressed that she was there. Not long after, I began noticing a change in my mother and a difference in her conversations with me on the phone. It took me several weeks to put my finger on it. One day I realized whenever we talked she would say, “We”, not “I”. “We read the lesson together.” We watched Downton Abbey together.” “We had popcorn tonight.” “We can’t stop talking about the weather!!” “We watched the geese and their babies in the side yard.” And, “I can’t believe some days they give us two pies for dessert! I’ve never eaten so well!” Her voice is now FILLED with gratitude and happiness. She has said she feels like she let go of so much she no longer needed and started a new life.

So now—one year later—I take the liberty of answering the question for my mother, “...And what will you discover?” to say: She has discovered (and keeps discovering) a new birth—happiness, joy, contentment, gratitude, an abundance of Soul, a feeling of being loved and a much more expansive way of expressing love to others instead of saying, “I never imagined I would end up this way.” She now says, “I love my room!” “I have so much fun watching the birds!” (When they heard of my mother’s interest in birds, the staff found a bird feeder to put right outside of her window.)

I can say with the utmost gratitude and joy—she has a much higher sense of herself, of others, and of God due to the healing environment that Glenmont has provided her. How wonderful that this is permanent and will never leave her.

As the Bible says, “Behold, I make all things new.” (Revelation 21:5) THIS is what my mother discovered when she fell on the ice and turned to divine Science to unfold her path forward.

Sincerely,

A Patient’s Daughter

“What can I do to help? Can I assist in some way?”

No, these are not comments from the cashier at your local retail store. These are questions I‘ve learned to naturally ask others since my time at Glenmont as a Christian Science nursing student. I’m not a by-stander in life anymore. I’ve become a participant. I hadn’t previously thought of myself that way, but it was how I behaved. It’s always great fun to swoop down into the party and enjoy the food, dancing and lively conversation. However, what of all the preparation and clean up that goes into that same party and my having a great time? Who was doing all that work? It probably wasn’t me. My sense of self was simply too vast to have taken notice or even cared about any of that in the past. My view wasn’t noticing what I could contribute to others. But that’s all changed. I think it’s best described by Mrs. Eddy (Misc.: 204:27) when she wrote: “Through accession of spirituality, God, the divine Principle of Christian Science, literally governs the aims, ambition, and acts of the Scientist.” Well, I’ve “literally” grown as a Scientist while at Glenmont and most of my new “ambitions” are now centering on other people’s needs instead of just my own. My fellow man is now coming up on my radar of awareness in a way previously unknown to me.

I’ve also learned a deeper sense of my own spirituality. Though we all have the attributes of Spirit, the Christian Science nursing program has managed to draw these attributes out in me. I had no idea that I was capable of so much compassion, gentleness and love. Jesus had said (Matt 5), “Ye are the light of the world.” Before I arrived here at Glenmont my light had been one that was covered up and dimly lit. Since taking classes, that same light has been taken off of the shelf, dusted off, and polished up. And it’s looking quite striking if I do say so myself! In S & H (pg. 264) it says, “When we realize that Life is Spirit…this understanding will expand into self-completeness, finding all in God, good…” That surely is something to aspire to and gain a deeper understanding of. And if all this wasn’t enough, these same opportunities are offered for ANYONE to take advantage of at Glenmont regardless if they desire to become a Christian Science nurse!

There is a wonderful week long retreat on CSN basics where we studied the metaphysical qualities involved in this ministry. But please understand, this “ministry” isn’t just nursing, it’s Love! I witnessed first-hand how this class opened my eyes to not only God’s unconditional love, but those of my fellow attendees, several of which didn’t even proceed to further their training. I also came across church members who took this introductory class and they shared how much it helped them as a Christian Scientist to improve their spiritual growth with God.

So you can see, the Christian Science Nursing Education Program at Glenmont really is a three-fold process that captures what Mrs. Eddy encouraged us all to understand, “what blesses one, blesses all.” 1 Attendees and students experience progress in their spiritual growth and their understanding of God, of Christian Science and of their own identity as God’s reflection. This in turn, allows us to impart this unfolding Love and healing thought to others; within ourselves, our families, and our communities. That is, in essence, our entire world. Isn’t that the point?

Its hard to believe that the new Glenmont is now almost 30 years old. We’ve realized for some time now that the furniture in patient rooms has outlived its usefulness. Furnishings are in various stages of disrepair and have become unsafe for patient use. We have located lovely replacements that will arrive

in November—just in time for the holidays!

We are announcing a new effort to fund this renewal and know that you will enjoy participation. Our residents are anticipating their lovely new rooms. We hope to fully fund the cost of the

furniture through this drive. So, please help us to achieve our goal!

Purchase a single piece or a room to honor a loved one. An entire room is approximately $3,000, depending on the selection of pieces. Some rooms have no need of a wardrobe since there is a closet. Not all rooms will have a desk, lift-chair or recliner. All rooms will have an over-bed table. Visit our website for pricing & information about the furniture with more photos.

All furniture is constructed with solid woods in a dark Natural Mahogany finish. Upholsteryis stain resistant Sunbrella fabric in colors that will coordinate and harmonize.
