Executive Administrator’s Corner

From time to time, we come across things representing the end-of-the-line. My friends at

Spanish Cove well remember many discontinued products like Studebakers, 8-track players, typewriters or wringer washing machines. Although these products served a purpose, they were eventually replaced with something newer, better or more convenient. The products may still work but became end-of-the-line because people stopped using them.

‘Use it or lose it!’ I don’t know where this phrase originated but frequently hear older people say it in jest. I find myself subconsciously dwelling on it the more I age. We want to make sure our brain and body continues to be as useful as ever despite signs of slowing down. We know we stand a better chance of having quality in our life when we practice using what we have. At some point, we all grab for the Sudoku’s, word puzzles or other brain stimulating activities. We also find ourselves walking and exercising more. We inwardly ask ourselves, what more can I do?

There is nothing in your life that is not worth using. You are smart, experienced, good looking and endowed with gifts and talents that make you truly special. What you have, you can practice on others or give to oathers. You were not meant to be like an end-of-the-line product with the best things about your life. These include your happiness, joy, faith, honesty, courage, goodness, hope and love for others. Yet, they too can become like an end-of-the-line product if you fail to pass them along. You were never meant to be their last receiver.

You are even granted the ability to turn your worst life experiences into your biggest blessings. Your tragedies may have been unwelcomed but gave you an opportunity to become a better you. They only remain tragedies if you fail to use them to become better. One of the best ways to use them by helping someone else who is also going through a similar experience. When you do it becomes a blessing; not just to the receiver but to the giver as well. Strange how that works.

Your mom and dad taught you to be an example. You have learned and experienced much in your life worth passing on. There will always be a better car, music box, washing machine or any item you use now. Almost anything can be made better with time and practice. Don’t quit trying and don’t be the end-of-the-line when it comes to sharing goodness.

If you want to be blessed, you must first be a blessing. If you want more intuition, keep learning. If you want more joy, be joyful. If you want to be useful then use what you have.

Sincerely, Don

Welcome New ResidentsBARB BJORK

Barb Bjork was born in Wilmington, Delaware. She spent the first

18 years of her life on farms around Greenwood, DE until nursing

school back in Wilmington for 3 years. After she graduated she enlisted

in the Army Nurse Corps as a second lieutenant and spent the next 6

years following assignments, which included: Basic training at Fort Sam

Houston, Texas; Walter Reed Army Hospital, Washington D.C.; Osaka

Army Hospital, Osaka, Japan; 11th Evacuation Hospital, Wonju, Korea;

Fitzsimmons Army Hospital, Denver, Colorado; the last 2 years at Ft.

which is also where she met her husband, John. When they were discharged

they moved to South Dakota where John was a social worker with Indian

Health Service. They moved to Oklahoma City in 1971. John retired in 1985

and Barb retired from OUHSC, Anesthesia Department in 1990. They traveled

in their motor home to all 50 states except Alaska and Barb made that trip later.

A year before John died in 1995 they were able to take their dream trip to Europe

for 6 weeks where they visited 11 countries.

John and Barb have 3 daughters, Lynn, Beth and Amy, 5 grandkids, 2 great

grandkids and 2 more greats on the way. Lynn and Amy live out of state and Beth

lives close in OKC. Barb enjoys visiting her sister in Delaware, gardening, lawn care,

sewing, repairing items for her family members, reading and watching TV. It sounds

like Barb is a good person to have around and we’re very pleased that she now calls

Spanish Cove her home. Welcome to Spanish Cove, Barb!

Life The Way You Want ItLIVING WELL – WATER WALKINGBy Debbie Miller, CPT, Director of Wellness

Looking for a great summer workout that is good for you, relatively easy and you can do in hot weather? Have you tried water walking? Water provides 12 times the

resistance of air, so as you walk you’re strengthening and building muscle while being easy on the joints. Water’s buoyancy supports your body weight which greatly reduces stress on the joints. Water walking is great therapy and provides a great workout. Working out in water can help improve cardiovascular fitness, balance and range of motion. Since water has greater resistance than air, walking in water requires more effort and ultimately burns more calories than walking on land. Water walking is easy and it sounds simple enough, however, there are a few tips to keep in mind. You want to stand upright, with shoulders back, chest lifted. Slowly stride forward, placing your whole foot on the bottom of the pool (instead of just your tiptoes), with your heel coming down first, then the ball of your foot. Avoid straining your back by keeping your core (stomach and back) muscles engaged as you walk. Lifting your knees higher helps boost your workout. You can also do interval training by pumping arms and legs faster for a brief period, then returning to your normal pace, repeating this process several times.

By exercising in a pool during the hot months, you can avoid problems that may accompany other outdoor summer workouts, such as heat exhaustion and dehydration. You still need to drink water and other fluids, while exercising. Spanish Cove’s exercise pool is open all year and it is a heated pool. Water Exercise with an audio CD is available Monday-Saturday at 7:00 a.m. and Water Fun is Tuesday/Thursday at 4:00 p.m. If you’re new to water exercise these are excellent classes to attend. Plus, it can be fun to exercise with friends. Call a friend or neighbor and invite them to water walk. Remember that our Spanish Cove pool rules encourage you to exercise with a partner!

QUOTE: “Friendship is born at that moment when one person says to another: ‘What! You too? I thought I was the only one.” -- C.S. Lewis VISION: I envision life as a mountain. We are all hiking on different trails. Some hikers are on trails filled with wildflowers dancing all around from the cool breeze blowing them to and fro. Others are resting on a rock up in the mountain embracing the view of how far they have climbed. There are those that are trekking through a dense forest of trees with no sunlight. Some are climbing boulders while grasping for a secure solid hold to help them get through the rough terrain. INSPIRATION: Even though we are all on different trails, we eventually cross paths. We sit around campfires and share stories. We talk about the beautiful overlooks we have seen, the wildflowers that have colored our journey, and the tools we have used to make our trek. Sharing the joys and trials of our own journey with other hikers fuels us to fearlessly continue to strive to climb the mountain. We become friends, encouragers, and are steadfast to one another.CALENDAR: There are many ways on the calendar you can cross paths with your fellow hikers here at the Cove. Examples are Koffee Klatch, Devotional with Don, and Power Walking. These are just a few events that you would have the ability to connect with one another and be able to talk and share stories. CHALLENGE: The challenge is simple this month, it is to reach out to your fellow hikers, your neighbors. See how they are doing. Invite them out to sit around the campfire or take a walk with you. Listen to their stories and share your own. You may find yourself saying “What! You too? I thought I was the only one.”Remember friendship is important in life. Having someone to confide in makes hiking the mountain of life a little easier to trek. Many blessings, Kathleen
