Art Camp was to have been this week but because of a death in the director’s family we had to cancel it. Our condolences go to Cheryl and her family as they gather in Ohio for the funeral.

Photography Camp met last week and the pic-tures these young photographers took were amazing. Scott Lewis and his team of instructors/helpers did a marvelous job guiding the students and their cameras throughout the campus. During the Meet and Greet last Sunday, Scott showed a slide show of some of the amazing photographs from the camp. I’m going to ask him to continue showing them for the next two weeks so everyone can get an idea of the quality of teaching/performance that occurs during our camps.

Vacation Bible School begins on July 23rd. Rev. Louise has assembled a talented group of teachers and helpers including a good group of our youth. The theme is Legos – Lego and Let God – and Louise’s of-fice is literally filled with the little building blocks of Legos. It should be a fun experience for everyone. There is still room for additional students … but hurry. They do have a limit.

The last camp of the year is Music Camp. This is usually the largest of our camps. Last year the camp was on hiatus but Mary Barton is back this year with her very talented faculty of professional musicians. If you haven’t yet registered, or you know any children who

haven’t registered, I would encourage you to go to our website – www.fccnh.org – and follow the prompts to register. Or you could also call Amanda Conti in the Christian Nursery School office. Amanda is our official registrar.

A major project started this week. The exterior of the campus will be painted during the next month. We’ve had to schedule around camps, CNS, parking lot use and a major movie shoot – but it is going to be done. Please be careful when you come to church and watch for ladders and workmen.

Our niece Jennifer is an English teacher at Missouri State University. She is an amazing professor and a pro-found and talented (and published) writer. In our fami-ly, whenever we exchange gifts, Jennifer gives me a book along with the reason she chose the particular book. She knows that I love books, libraries, book stores and that my first professional passion was as an English teacher.

Her last gift was Elizabeth Gilbert’s best-selling book Big Magic. She gave it to me because Ms. Gilbert is one of her favorite authors and because the table of contents looks like a list of sermon subjects.

The book is about creativity and living life creative-ly and without fear. In one chapter she quotes a fellow professor, who had been nominated for a Pulitzer Prize, who asked one of his outstanding students a probing question. The student had confided in him that she wanted to be a writer and he asked: “Do you have the courage to bring forth the treasures that are hidden within you?”

What a marvelous question for any of us to be asked. We all have treasures that are hidden within us. Yet, how often do we ignore those treasures out of fear – fear we will be misunderstood, fear we will be rejected, fear we will be judged or just fear to share. As someone who has written over 2,000 sermons during my minis-try, I know that fear.

That’s why I was so appreciative of the homilies presented to us last Sunday during the 2018 Elder’s Sunday. Each of the three speakers – Sheri Werner, Chris Trammell and Morgan Stoddard – put any fears they might have had aside and shared from their hearts. I was deeply moved by the articulation of their faith and the openness with which they shared. Sheri and Chris spoke while Morgan brought his homily in song. Their sharing, as well as the entire service of worship, was for me – Big Magic.

I thank each of them for their dedicated leadership within our church family.

I look forward to seeing you next Sunday as we celebrate together. And if you’ve not attended the SpiritSong service at 5:30 PM, I cordially invite you to do so. Ty Parr has taken on the musical leadership since Josh Elson and his family have moved to New York City.

Don’t be a stranger. I’ll see you in church.

Vacation Bible School begins next week, and we are expecting 45 or so kids to be building all over this campus! Literally – we will be building with LEGOS as we explore what it means to be building commu-nity, relationships and the Realm of God as we do this together. As for me, this whole process that helped me build a greater awareness of what happens when folks work together to make things happen. We allow our-selves to be creative and partner in making new things happen. I want to take a moment to offer my gratitude to a few folks.

Last spring, when I was asked to pull VBS togeth-er, I asked a few parents at Meet & Greet what they thought about coming up with our own curriculum and program using LEGOS. I received immediate re-sponses of, “That is a great idea! I can help.” Rae Eiklor, Roz Noziska, Erin Zavala and Beth Owen grabbed hold of this suggestion and ran with it! Asking for donations of Legos that might be hiding under people’s beds or abandoned in the back of closets, we received many do-nations. A couple of people even bought new sets of LEGOS to donate. Did you know that the Glendale Galleria had a LEGO store? Rae and Neill Eiklor took me shopping one day. It was kind of mind-boggling.

Many of the donated LEGOS needed to be washed and sorted. Some of the donations were appropriate for older children, others for small hands. I had a crew of teenagers that washed, dried and hand-sorted small pieces. Erin, Lucy and Noah spent about 3 hours sitting

on the floor of my office one day as we removed any-thing that looked “scary” from the collection of bricks. We took out small guns, lances, maces, cross-bows, etc. It was actually kind of surprising how many weapons come with these sets. Perla, Naya, Sophia, Sam, Molly and Eric (among others) hand washed and sorted what remained.

Everything is consolidated, organized and ready for use. I can’t thank these people enough for how they pitched-in, and actually seemed to have a good time doing it!

May mother used to say, “Many hands make small work.” And she is right. Not only does the work go by quickly, but we make friendships as we shared our sto-ries. It just feels good to partner with one another. I think that is what being a church is about. The word “church” comes from the Greek ekklesia. It literally translates as “assembly.” I am very aware that assem-blies come in a variety of sizes and shapes. Over the last weeks we have had an assembly of folks who have come together to give our time and creativity to build a memorable program to teach our kids about faith. I am grateful that I have been able to work with all these folks.

I can’t wait for you to see what we will do next week. I’ll take pictures!

Music Camp needs instrument loans/donations dur-ing the week of July 30-August 3. If you, or anyone you know, has good, well playing instruments such as: acoustic guitars, flutes, portable keyboards, small violins/cellos – we could use them and they would stay at the church during the duration of the camp.We especially need flutes! So check out those dusty at-tics and closets! The Music Camp would be so grate-ful! If you have instrument(s) to loan/donate, please contact [email protected]. Thank you!

Dear Saints: I greet you in the Wonderful Magnificent name of

our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. This past Sunday some of the youth had a

“Chopped” dessert bake-off. The original TV series concept’s description reads: In each episode, four chefs compete in a three-round contest, where they attempt to incorporate unusual combinations of ingredients into dishes that are later evaluated by a panel of three judges. We adopted this idea but centered our ideas on des-serts. I gathered ingredients for three separate dishes and divided the youth into three groups. They selected the unknown ingredients and created fun, tasty dish-es. The three dishes (pictured at right with our youth chefs) were rice crispy corn, banana pudding cookies, and some sort of chocolate cheesecake.

Teamwork was the most important aspect of this

activity. It was fun for the youth to bake but it warmed my heart watching them work together as brothers and sisters in Christ.

With love,Jeremy Gillett
