SACL: Executive Board and League Contacts

With the first General Meeting for 2017 now completed, now seems a good time to share my goals as your Civic League president this year:

Communications - While we will continue to publish the paper newsletter (though bimonthly rather than monthly), I hope to expand our use of electronic media to more quickly share and discuss information with each other. With that in mind, we'll try make the most of our website (www.suburban23505.com) as well as e-mail and social media such as NextDoor and Facebook. Look for updates along these lines soon!

Crime Prevention - Many of us have noted with concern the number of larcenies from sheds and vehicles and other property crimes in our area, and the Board and I intend for the League to help prevent further such activity. I'd ask all of you to help us and the Norfolk Police Department by (1) improving the lighting around your property with energy-efficient fixtures, (2) considering investing in low-cost security cameras around your home that can help identify prowlers, (3) removing valuables from your cars when parked at home and securing them in your homes, and (4) looking for and reporting unusual or suspicious activity while dog-walking, doing yardwork, etc. Please help us, and join our Neighborhood Watch!

Community Building & Improvement - We have WONDERFUL neighbors, and I'd like to see the League continue arranging events where we can come together for fun and fellowship as well as to help beautify our neighborhood. Please look for opportunities to join us as we plan for things like picnics, pot-lucks, and Adopt-a-Spot clean-up days.

Neighborhood Advocacy - I intend for the League to sustain and expand our engagement with our fellow civic leagues, the Wards Corner Task Force, and our city and state officials as ways to help influence their efforts in ways that Improve our neighborhood's livability.

I look forward to working on your behalf, and ask for your ideas, support, and assistance in all of these efforts as the year proceeds. Thank you, Rob Lain

SACL EARNN: Environmental Awards for Recycling in Norfolk Neighborhoods

Hello Neighbors! Help keep Suburban Acres Beautiful! We

will have two Adopt-a-Spot clean ups this spring. The first will be March 25 and the second May 20. On each of these days we will meet at Suburban Park Elementary School at 9:00 am. Trash bags and gloves will be provid-ed. The cleanup will only take about an hour. You're in-vited! Thank you for putting out your recycle bins! An increase of just 2% over last year's participation will help Suburban Acres Civic League amass EARNN points. Please remember to put our your blue bins out on recycling day even if they are not full. Participation counts! Also, if you haven't already, please register for Recycling Perks. You can do so by going to https://recyclingperks.com/#/signUp. This is a reward program for recycling. You can trade points earned for lots of local deals, like $5.00 off a $75.00 purchase at Farm Fresh, buy one adult admission and get one free at the Virginia Zoo and Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art, and numerous others. What do you have to lose? You can even sign up for email or text reminders of recycling days.

Susan Winstin, SACL EARNN Coordinator

Suburban Acres Civic League receives EARNN (Environmental Awards for Recycling in Norfolk

Neighborhoods) points when more residents sign up for Recycling Perks. And that

means more money for our civic league!

Recycling Perks provides YOU with discounts at restaurants, grocery stores, entertainment, and other retailers. Rewards

are offered by local businesses as you earn points for putting

your blue recycling bin out every two weeks.

Neighborhood Watch Report: March/April 2017

The CrimeView statistics give the impression that our neighborhood has become one of the crime-ridden parts of Norfolk. Our once quiet neighborhood is experiencing some of the same security problems as other areas of Norfolk. That said, we still have one of the safest neighborhoods in the City,

but we must work together to keep it that way. The most important things you can do to prevent break-ins are:

Make sure your doors and windows are strong and have good locks – and keep them locked! Most break-ins happen during the day through doors and windows on the back of the house.

Keep the outside of your house and driveway well-lit all night, which is when car break-ins happen.

Don’t open the door to strangers, but let them know you are inside.

Keep an eye out on your street! Call the police for all suspicious activities and persons. Emergency: 911. Non-Emergency: 757-441-5610.

There were a number of car break-ins over the December holidays. Our Community Resource Officer from the Norfolk Police Department, Billy Old, recently posted this on NextDoor.com:

Please take valuables out of your vehicle and lock the doors. Do not leave spare keys to the vehicle or house inside. Things to remove that you might not think of include gym bags, briefcases, or other cases. There have been car larcenies where a bag was taken from the vehicle, even though it contained clothing. The suspects probably believed the bags contained laptops or other electronics. Several arrests have been made, as well as an effort from the police department to increase patrols in the areas where a majority of the larcenies have occurred. Please do not hesitate to report suspicious activity. You would be surprised how many arrests have come from a concerned citizen calling in about a suspicious situation (good descriptions are paramount). If you would like to send Officer Old an email as a courtesy after contacting either Non-Emergency or 911, please do at [email protected].

We want to keep you informed of security and safety issues that affect our neighborhood. Now that the newsletter will only be published six times a year, we will be making more use of NextDoor to relay information. You are encouraged to sign up at www.NextDoor.com. Type in Suburban Acres to find our civic league’s link.

Warm weather is coming and we will be getting outside more. Get to know your neighbors. Say “hi” and wave to everyone who passes along your street so they will know you have seen them. If we all keep watch over what happens on our streets, we can help keep our neighborhood safe!

The Suburban Gardener: Spring Garden Tips

Richard Drumwright

Although I do not pretend to be an expert, hopefully infor-mation gained from relationships and from reading help provide useful tips for your gardening pleasure. More and more city dwellers are enjoying growing their own vegetables. Great space is not required and it is some-thing the whole family can enjoy. This time of year, when a little of winter may still be hanging around you can get a jump on your vegetable crop by growing a row or two of that staple “the potato”. It is not that difficult and once these plants are ready to har-vest, what fun it is to dig and find these below ground eat-able treats. Here are some tips: Site: Choose a fairly sunny spot (5-6 hrs. minimum)

with space for one or two ten foot rows two to three feet apart. Pick a site where potatoes or tomatoes have not grown recently. Clear the site of grass and weeds. A shovel or hoe is all that is necessary.

Soil: Good soil is important. Once the site is cleared

adding compost or organic bagged soil from a garden center is advised especially if heavy clay. When tilled or spaded in it will help drainage and aeration to allow full- sized potato development.

Buying Seed Potatoes: Always buy seed potatoes

from a garden center (no supermarket potatoes). My preference is Pontiac Red (red potato) and Yukon Gold (white potato). Two to three pounds per ten-foot row is plenty.

The potato should be cut so each piece has one to three eyes (little white protrusion) and is one quarter to one third size. Once pieces are cuts dust in a paper bag with Dusting Sulphur (found in rose section of garden center). Let dusted pieces dry and harden a day or two in a cool place (i.e. garage or shed). This will guard against disease. Planting: You can plant weeks before the last frost

(late March) but not if the ground is wet. It is too wet if you grab a handful of dirt and when squeezed it sticks together in a ball. If it crumbles start digging.

Typically, seed potatoes are grown in a shallow trench in a row. Dig your trench six inches deep and line bottom with a slow release fertilizer (10-10-10 is cheap and readily available). Mix fertilizer well in dirt by hand or hand shovel. Place your pieces twelve inches apart with eyes facing up. Cover your pieces with two to three inches of soil and water well. After that water during periods of drought but stop when foliage wilts. Growing: Within weeks you will see green foliage and

the excitement begins. Let it grow 4-6 inches and start bringing soil from both sides of plant by hoe or shovel forming a small mound. You can mound until plant becomes a foot tall and flowers start. In two to four months depending upon weather you will have a delicious crop for harvest. They will taste much better than store bought I promise.

Harvest: Once the plant flowers and foliage begins to

wilt you can harvest. If you are unsure as to harvest stick your hand underneath dirt and check size.

With a shovel or pitch fork dig well outside plant and deep so as not to damage potatoes. If “mother nature” has been cooperative, you will enjoy the bountiful harvest for months. Storage: Brush off excess dirt but do not wash until

ready to eat. Place potatoes in a dry and cool place for your enjoyment. I store mine in a paper lined drawer just inside my home nearby the garage. HAPPY GARDENING!

You can help by bringing refreshments to a meeting/social hour. A sign-up sheet will be posted at each meeting. Karen Mayne has volunteered to continue to bring the drinks and paper

products. So the refreshment volunteers just need to bring light snacks, with reimbursement up to $30 from the league. We need some neighbors to step up, or our meetings will become snack-less!

our new Civic League President for those who had not meet him. Pledge of Allegiance said and then welcome to all new members, visitors and guest speakers.

Community Resource Officer Report: (Officer Bill Old III)

The door to shed had the plates pried off. Lots of yard stuff taken; Burglary on Virginian Drive (TV, Mac Book taken). There was also some vandalism at the Tinee Giant on Thole street and a car stolen outside the Hispanic grocery at 7500 Virginian Drive. Car was left running.

SACL members asked questions about installing cameras on their homes and businesses to catch the thieves. We will do some research on the best cameras to install and post in the one of the upcoming newsletters.

Neighborhood Watch: Karen Mayne will be posting the incidents noted by Officer Old in the newsletter as well on email and Next door. If you have any information or articles you would like to see posted in the newsletter, please let Karen know.
