The Pensacola Beach ElksLodge has been the glue that hasheld the Beach residential com-munity together for forty-threeyears. And, this year the Elks willcelebrate a major landmark whenthey move into their grandiosebuilding on Pensacola BeachBoulevard possibly in September.Under the guidance of the newExhalted Ruler, Barry McCleary, the Elks will transfer all theirbenevolent activities, ceremoniesand parties to the 10,000 squarefoot facility. Amenities will in-clude a large activity room, din-ing space, kitchen, and openseated bar on the first floor.

The building will take ad-vantage of the view of LittleSabine Bay with a wrap-arounddeck which will provide elegantoutdoor space for cookouts andgatherings.

The upstairs which will beserviced with an elevator will bethe formal meeting room for Elksrituals. A small activity room andoffices for the secretary and clubmanager, will also be located onthe second floor.

Chris Dugas is the chairmanof the building committee for the$2.2 million structure. Othercommittee members are DonStevens, John Decker, ElaineTenniman, George Scribner,Dave Smith, Dude Hausmann,Brian Mann, Joe Brennan, RayCreary, Lance Drown and DaleSogor.

Funding for the new lodgebuilding came from pledges frommembers and insurance coverageafter Hurricane Ivan destroyedthe former building. Currently,

the Elks are housed on the toplevel of the Beach Marina.

Originally, the PensacolaBeach Elks Lodge was number2256, founded by 122 members.Six founding members are stillactive in the lodge. They are TomMiller, Dick Zelius, Joe Knight,Bob Jones, J.R. Turner, and JoeRockwell.

Several years ago, ElksLodge #2256 merged with adowntown lodge and the newnumber is 497. There are now800 members. Membership isopen to ladies and many womenhold dual membership as Elksand in their own original orga-nization, Ladies of the Elks. LOEholds separate meetings, con-ducts its own fundraisers, andcompletes numerous projects, allto benefit the Elks Lodge.

Elks and the LOE take theword "benevolent" seriously.Over their long history, they havebeen noted for their ongoing con-tributions not only to their ownchildren's hospital and therapyservices, but to numerous localagencies and organizations. Theyare active supporters every yearof youth sports including theirHoop Shoot contest and contri-butions to the Gulf Breeze SportsAssociation.

Forty-three years covers amajor piece of history onPensacola Beach. When that his-tory is punctuated year in andyear out with constant caring foran endless string of needs andcauses, it's easy to see why theElks have thrived. And, why theyare still the glue that holds theresidential community together.

Members of the PensacolaBeach Residents and Leasehold-ers Association who have beenfollowing a nomadic trail to holdtheir monthly meetings, maysoon find a permanent location.

Claire Cullerton, speaking attheir March 14 meeting at Bam-boo Willie's suggested that themeetings might be held at OurLady of Assumption CatholicMission where hurricane resto-

ration will be complete in May.The PBRLA elected Tona

DeMers president. The new vicepresident is Fran SummerlinHisted. The secretary is VictoriaClarkin, and the treasurer is GarySmith, immediate past president.Bill Compton will serve as BoardMember at Large.

During the business meet-ing, members discussed revivingtheir sea oats sales program withall the proceeds going toPensacola Beach ElementarySchool.

The next meeting of thePBRLA will be at 6 p.m. on Tues-day, April 11. The location is tobe announced.

Everything came up rosesfor the Pensacola Beach Associa-tion of Mardi Gras Krewes aftertheir year started in a field ofthorns. The Krewes faced thenearly impossible task of raisingthirty thousand dollars to fundthe Krewe of Wrecks parade. TheSanta Rosa Island Authoritywhich had financed all the pa-rade expenses in prior years, con-tributed $10,000, the most they

could do after hurricanes cuttheir revenue streams dramati-cally. The announcement that theAOK ended with excess fundscame attheir finalmeeting ofthe year,March 20.

" W eall workedso hardjust hop-ing to gete n o u g hf u n d i n gtogether toput on thep a r a d e , "Andrea Brunt, Head Wreck said."Now, we find we will havemoney left over."

Although, to date, not all thebills had been received, there willstill be a surplus. The Krewe ofWrecks Board of Directors recom-mended that the excess funds beput in a CD to be used for futureparade expenses. Artie Davis,Krewe of Bananimals Captain, moved to place the money in a CD,but retain a $50 parade fund formiscellaneous expenses. Themotion passed unanimously.

In reviewing the 2006 pa-rade, Andrea said that both BuckLee, SRIA General Manager, and

AOK Wraps It Up Until Next YearLt. Bob Clark, Escambia CountySheriff's Department, werepleased with the parade.

The AOK will address thetraffic tie-upwhich occurredas motoristswere leavingthe beach afterthe parade. They will makesuggestions tothe City ofPensacola onremoval of bar-ricades in amanner thatwill not impedethe traffic flow

off the island. This year's parade contained

a total of 36 floats, three radio sta-tions, and three marching units, along with the convertibles carry-ing Krewe of Wrecks royalty. Ittook just under two hours for theparade to run the Via de Lunaroute.

Representatives from kreweswho attended the meeting wereDanah Gibson, Artie Davis, JayBrykcznski, Chrissy Cook, JaneMcGrath, and Sam Magee.

Andrea Brunt conducted themeeting in the absence of the AOKPresident Deb Friedman, who wasout of town.

The Krewe of Wrecks parade alwaysincludes McGuire’s Pipe Band as acolorful marching unit.

Today, I am researchingthings that don't make sense.Mostly, it's about common say-ings tht we all use from time totime in our conversations. Let'sjump right in with the descrip-tion of someone who has putaway a few too many. That makesa guy "Drunk as Cooter Brown."Who was Cooter Brown? Washe for real? Was he the villagedrunk? Or what about "drunk asa lord?" Which lord? Surely, notthe lords-a-leaping who werechasing the maids-a-milking inthe carol, Twelve Days of Christ-mas.

"Drunk as a skunk" has onegood quality, it rhymes. But, tellme, how many drunk skunkshave you ever seen? Skunks havesome pretty obnoxious habits, butI don't think drinking booze isone of them.

Let's travel along to mentalconditions. Take the phrase,"Crazy as a March Hare." Eventhe most knowledgeable psychia-trist would go off track on thatone. Crazy as a small rabbit run-ning loose in the months ofMarch? Puhleeze. And howabout "Strange as Old Nick's hat-band?" Puhleeze, again. Or "Batsin the Belfry?' Puhleeze or did Ialready say that?

Moving along, we find in-animate objects which come tolife in odd ways, like "Dumb asa Doornail, Smart as a Whip, orCute as a Button." I will leavethese to your imagination. You

may know more than I do aboutdoornails, whips and buttons.

It is not unusual for my hus-band, Frank, a Georgia native totell me "It's cold as kraut outside."I thought kraut was warm, fer-mented cabbage which dresses uphot dogs and Reuben sandwiches. But, maybe, Georgia folks have adifferent take on Kraut.

Speaking of weather, wherein the world did the phrase "Un-der the Weather" come from? Ifyou're not feeling up to par, I canjust visualize you sleeping underChannel 28. Here's hoping youwill soon be "Fair to Middlin.'"

Cats always find their wayinto weird old stuff. For instance,if a monthly rental on PensacolaBeach is outrageous, it's "Higherthan a Cat's Back." How high isthat? Wouldn't higher than theEmpire State Building be better? How about this one, "What's thematter, kid, cat got your tongue?"Poor kid. He goes off searchingfor the cat that has his tongue.

He may have been the samelittle fellow who was "knee highto a grasshopper" the last time yousaw him. Do grasshoppers haveknees?

My research could becomebook length since there must behundreds of sayings which don'tmake sense.

I will just mention a coupleof very old-fashioned sayings. (1)You're the cat's meow. The trans-lation is you are pretty as a run-way model. (2) You're the bee's

knees. Translation, you're pret-tier than a runway model.

Suppose a guy would walkinto the Shaker and tell his girl-friend she was the bee's knees. After she knocked him off the barstool, her mildest commentwould likely be, "Get a life,Cooter Brown."

Hungarian Goose Down Pillows, DuvetsLuxurious Linens • Magnificent Textiles

Don’t you deservesome DOWN time?

Is there anything more com-forting than your very own pil-low? Pandora de Balthazar, owner of Decadence Down, doesn't think so. When she heardabout Karen Cook Cowen's ef-forts to make life a little easierfor 150 children in protectivecustody in Santa Rosa County,Pandora went to work.

She donated 77 Hungariangoose down child size pillows toKaren's kids.

"To think of those childrenand all of their loss then Ithought about giving them pil-lows," Pandora said. "The pil-lows would be something ofcomfort to hold their littleheads for what could be a verylong night."

So, Pandora had the pil-

lows ready, but they did not havecovers. Mollie Thibodeaux, amember of Karen's crew came tothe rescue by recruiting volun-teers Kay Amberson and ShelbySmith who found colorful fabricand stitched 77 miniature pillowshams.

The real meaning of the ef-forts of these ladies came from alittle girl who came to a countycoordinator, hugging her pillow. She hugged it and hugged it. Thepillow was all she had.

Currently, Karen's group ofvolunteers is in the process of fill-ing 150 Easter baskets for thechildren. Anyone who wishes tohelp with this project can takedonations of cash, Easter candies,or trinkets to the Real EstateHouse on the Beach by April 5.

Have You Hugged Your Pillow Today?

Huggable Hungarian goose down pillows were donated to the childrenin protective custody in Santa Rosa County. It took the teamwork of (L toR): Pandora de Balthzar, Decadence Down; Mollie Thibodeaux, ShelbySmith and Kay Amberson to pull off this monumental donation.

CHIANTI'S REBIRTHIt was not so long ago that Chianti hasthe deserved reputation as a very unso-phisticated wine that was served fromstraw-covered bottles that were quicklyemptied so that they could serve ascandleholders. All that changed in 1996,when the DOCG (Denomination of Con-trolled Origin, which requires labels thatmust state wines' zone of original andthat the wines meet certain productionstandards) appellation of ChiantiClassico was finalized. This actionserved to establish the highest standardsfor vineyards and winemakers. As of2005, Chianti Classico producers areunited under the fourteenth-century logoof the "Profile of the Black Rooster,"which will appear on an qualified bottlesof wine. T his ensures consumers of thehighest quality Chianti. Hint: ChiantiClassico is made from at least 80 per-cent Sangiovese grapes, which may beblended with other Italian and interna-tional red varietals. Chianti varies withhow and where the grapes are grown, the percentages of the different variet-ies of grapes used, the method of aging, including the type of oak used, the sizeof the barrels, and their age. Well, Spring has sprung, theleprechauns have gone back intohiding and beer is back to itsnatural color! So, we have a littlebreak before things begin "hop-ping" again on our little Beach.I need a break from spring break, having spent the week with myfive-year-old grandson, Jesiah.Lord, I need his energy, not tomention his excitement and en-thusiasm. But, to him, a week atNanny and Pappy's is better thanDisney Land! I've been to Disneynever do it again. He's right, it isbetter here. I didn't do a lot ofcooking last week as most of ourmeals were ordered at the drive-thru at "Happy Donalds". That'shis favorite and that's what he'salways called it. We took himon a trip to The Zoo, which is anall day thing, but worth it.

Another day was spent at theGulfarium in Ft. Walton. Afterspending around $35 for entry,we're watching the dolphin showwhen Jesiah says, "Hey, Nanny, look at the bird!"

Of course, seagulls knowwhen it's feeding time for theanimals. Right before we lost mymother, Jesiah had a dream inwhich he saw great-granny fly-ing through the clouds like a bird. When I told my mother this, shesmiled and said, "Then maybethat's how he'll see me." So, ev-ery time we see a bird, we say"hello" to great-granny, even ata dolphin show.

He and Pappy went shop-ping for X-Box games, whichthey play endlessly, so that gaveme a time to catch the last of thePub Crawl and share in celebrat-ing Sherri Greene's 50th birth-day! It was wonderful to see herand George again since they'vemoved to Alabama.

Special thanks to my dearfriends, Courtney and JimWinstead, for giving me a ridehome. I swear that Caddy doeslove the beach!

On Sunday, it was time forJesiah to go home. He neverwants to leave Nanny andPappy's, so we tried to explainspring break to him. But all hereally understood was he got tostay at our house and there wasno school (he's only in pre-K).Eight days is not long enough for

a visit in his book. We took himhome by way of another "HappyDonalds" with a playground andhe was fine by the time he gothome. We had a little time tospend with Quincy, (she's still tooyoung to realize the magic ofstaying with us, but it won't belong). Right now, for Jesiah it'sall magical fun with Pappy, leav-ing toys scattered, staying up late, excitement and a captive audi-ence. I hope he never loses thatexcitement and enthusiasm forlife. For now, we are two veryexhausted grandparents headedhome for the sofa, where we im-mediately went to sleep. Thegood thing is that my daughterand I have finally found a boy wecan agree on!

I really did cook this recipea couple of weeks ago, and Ifound that if you added a greenvegetable, it's a meal by itself.Okay, let's cook….

This week I would like to ex-plain some of the differences be-tween professional shampoos andthe kind that you can buy at thegrocery store along with why us-ing the right shampoo on thewrong hair is not a good thing.

The first thing that I will tellyou is that there are good and badin both choices of shampoos. Thebiggest difference in profes-sional, salon quality shampooand everyday, drug store sham-poos is the chemical make-up.The professional products are 3to 4 percent water. Most sham-poos available at the grocerystores are 23 to 24 percent wa-ter. Now, if you normally glob abig handful of shampoo on yourhair anyway, then this reallydoesn’t matter. Salon gradeshampoos have less water, so aremore concentrated. You need asmaller amount to get the desiredeffect.

The same rule of thumb ap-plies to conditioners.

Of course, the salon gradeproducts are more expensive andwith good reason. If a manufac-turer supplies a shampoo whichboasts strength and protein en-hancers, the protein molecule hasto be broken down small enoughto penetrate the hair shaft. Thisis where the expense lies. Prod-

ucts can advertise that they haveall the protein in the world, evenif there is just a small amount inthe mixture. The protein does notdo any good unless it gets insidethe hair shaft. You might as wellput a pork chop on your head!.

As for “Pro-V,” what is that?A professional vitamin? Greatmarketing, but get real.

As for the right shampoo forthe right hair, follow your hairtype to make a good choice.Coarse red hair needs moisture.Fine hair needs volume. Chemi-cally treated hair needs some-thing specifically designed forthat.

Shampoos designed to helpease a condition should be usedwith caution. A common mistakewhen using dandruff shampoosis using them everyday. That canactually make the problem worse.Every third day should be justfine.

There are a variety of prod-ucts available, consult your hair-dresser to find the right one foryou. The investment you make inthe correct shampoo and condi-tioner is a step toward a morebeautiful you. If you have anyquestions, call the Hair Hotlineat 932-4323.

Here’s to good health andgreat hair.

Spring has sprung. Thegrass has riz. I wonder where myhusband is?

No, really, I wonder wheremy husband is.

Last week spring eased itsway in to Havelock with tempera-tures in the high 60s to low 70sand everything starting to bloom, including our lawn. As usual Itook my couple of hours of “me”time on Saturday which normallyconsists of a trip to the Commis-sary to buy groceries or the War-rior Library to return overduebooks and a quick workout at theDevil Dog Gym or the CombatPool. Normally, when I returnfrom one of my Saturday after-noon outings, I am greeted by mytwo Harrys (husband and son)who have spent many weekendsthis past winter refurbishing a1960s wooden lifeguard boat re-covered off the Jersey Shore.

Young Harry always greetsme first and waylays me withtales of how his dad let him usepower tools, that he had Spriteto drink with lunch and quicklyasks if he can have a sleepoverwith one of his friends.

Then Harry, my husband, saunters over, gives me a kiss andinquires as to how my afternoonwas. Getting better, I alwaysthink to myself, as I survey whatis in front of me – a Marine of-ficer who has gracefully agedover the past 18 years wearingkhakis, a blue chambray shirt andleather Sperry Topsiders with nosocks. His full head of regulationcut hair is almost completely grayand on these afternoons it is pep-pered with bits of sawdust, paintand flecks of fiberglass. As al-ways he helps me carry in andput away the groceries and moreoften than not we enjoy an icecold micro-brew beer while he

tells me about the progress he’smade on the boat or I ramble onabout the lack of selection ofbooks in our tiny base library.

So you can only imagine theutter shock of it all when I re-turned home on a most gloriousSaturday with the intent of de-vouring gourmet hors d’oeuvreswhile sipping a fine red winewith my husband who is some-times more like a fictionalizedcharacter out of a NicholasSparks novel only to be greetedby a Larry the Cable Guywannabe.

“Harry, where is your dad?”I ask.

“Oh, he’s out back cuttingthe lawn.”

That’s what I was afraid of,I think to myself. Yes, for all tosee, there sat my husband on abright orange lawn tractor wear-ing jeans (not his sexy 501s),work boots (bought them at Wal-Mart), a sleeveless t-shirt (usu-ally these end up as paint rags),a ball cap (I didn’t even knowhe owned a ball cap), drinkinga Budweiser and cutting thegrass.

“Sweets, can you help withme with the groceries?” I ask try-ing to smile and not notice theunnerving makeover of my hus-band.

“Can’t sugar lips, it’s gonnarain soon and I gotta ‘git-r-done’!” he says.

While I put away the last ofthe food, I replayed in my mindthe words “gonna” and “git-r”.I am not sure what happened tomy Yankee bred, English Lit ma-jor husband last weekend, butthis Girl-Raised-In-The-Southenjoyed the moment.

Until next time…Luv,Lizzard

In the last few yearsPensacola has seen some of thebiggest and most powerful hur-ricane waves in our history. The outlook for the next 15years seems like it will followthat trend.

You see, the cycle of hur-ricane activity goes round ev-ery 20 to 50 years or so.Since(Erin/Opal) in 1995, ac-tivity has been growing stron-ger and will probably continueto do so until around the year2020 — and the threat of themost intense hurricanes, cat-egories 3 to 5, is especiallyhigh. That’s not good.

Here's the way it works.Hurricanes feed off warm oceanwaters of at least(80degrees),like our Gulf . Thewarmer the water, the better it isfor hurricanes. The waters alsoneed to be around 150feet deep, because these storms churn upseas so violently that they candrag up cold water, which killsthe storm by cutting off its powersource.

Hot, humid air rising off ourGulf is the fuel that drives thesetropical storms and hurricanes. As that moist air rises, it coolsand condenses into giant stormclouds, at the same time unleash-

Hurricane Surf...ing a large amount of heat thatpowers these storms.

Compounding all this, theweather patterns are steeringtropical storms straight for ushere in Florida. Normally, a largearea of high pressure, the Ber-muda-Azores High, sits over theAtlantic and allows the sea tobake under the tropical sunshine. The hurricanes spin around theedge of it and track up the eastcoast.

Not this year!Weather forecasters were

predicting months ago that thiswould be a bad year for hurri-canes, but the number of stormsis unprecedented, even for ushere in Florida.

Is it global warming? I'm notsure. That's a whole different sub-ject! Weather patterns can last foryears, and we just don't live longenough to notice too many. Wetend to want to blame somethingfor the storms. Remember,Mother Earth is in charge here.

As surfers we follow thesetrends in hope of catchingwaves,so it pays to learn as muchas we can on how these stormsform, and why.

And as locals of this beatifularea,we need to pay attention sowe may stay safe.

With the beginning of Lenton Ash Wednesday, the Christiancommunity now is in that “InBetween Time” as we wait toobserve the events of Holy Week, followed by our Easter celebra-tion. The “in between time” of-fers opportunity to move throughmoments of introspection.“Know thyself,” has been a goodsuggestion, for it is so easy to livethrough our days and not taketime to examine the reasons forour actions, or to establish a phi-losophy of living that will be pro-ductive and rewarding. It is soeasy to let each day come and go,reacting to all the pressures andopportunities without havingconsciously worked out that phi-losophy. Not to recognize a phi-losophy is a philosophy in itself, responding on the run with no

guidelines to offer stability anddirection. This “in betweentime” can be a wonderful forwardleap if we take advantage of it.Perhaps sitting on the beach andwatching the waves come and go,or sitting on a pier seeing theever-widening ripples of water,or just watching the twinkling ofthe stars on a dark night, couldafford the opportunity to “knowthyself.” Or, perhaps a time ofquietness with soft music and abook that presses us with somehard questions to consider, wouldbe productive. This “in betweentime” may be a wonderful oppor-tunity for spiritual growth anddevelopment.

With the busy activities ofthe summer, this may be the lastopportunity for quite a while to“know thyself.”

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Regarding your upcom-ing challenges, the Aries Lamb should very quickly size thingsup and allow you to make the best possible use of whateverresources you have on hand. Good luck.

TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You rarely blame othersfor missteps that worked against you. But this time you needto lay out all the facts and insist that everyone acknowledgehis or her share of the mistakes. Then start again.

GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You might want to startmaking vacation plans. And don't be surprised by unexpectedfamily demands. Maintain control. Be open to suggestions, but don't get bogged down by them.

CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Work with both your MoonChild and Crab aspects this week to keep both your creativeand practical sides balanced. Your intuition sharpens, givingyou greater insight by the middle of the week.

LEO (July 23 to August 22) The Big Cat should finallyhave all the information needed to move on with a project. Ifnot, maybe you'll want to give everything a new and morethorough check before trying to move on.

VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Too much emo-tional pain caused by someone you can't win over as a friend? Then stop trying to do so. You have other things you need towork on this week. Go to it, and good luck.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) It's a good time toreassess where and how your strengths can help you build, and where your weaknesses can hinder you. Remember tobuild on your strongest foundation.

SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) That personalmatter that seemed so hard to deal with should be less con-fusing now. Don't rush. Let things happen easily, without therisk of creating even more puzzlement.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Changecontinues to be a strong factor in many important areas. Keepon top of them, and you won't have to worry about losingcontrol. A personal situation takes on a new look.

CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A businessoffer sounds intriguing. But if you don't check it out thor-oughly, you could have problems. Take a set of questionswith you when you attend your next meeting.

AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Your self-con-fidence should be coming back. That's good news. But it mightbe a bit over the top right now, so best to let it settle downbefore you start making expensive decisions.

PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your life, your deci-sions. Good enough. But be sure you have all the facts youneed to put into the decision-maker mixing bowl and hope itwill come out as it should.

BORN THIS WEEK: You find much of your creativitywith new people who give you much to think about.
