BPI crackdown nets £108,000from three illegal importersIN A heavy crackdown on parallelimports, three import and wholesalefirms have agreed to pay the BPI a totalof £108,000 in damages and costs fordealing in cheap foreign -made LPswhich had been imported illegally fromnone -EEC sources.
And director general of the BPI JohnDeacon warned: "We will not toleratethese records being brought into thecountry illegally and will take actionagainst anyone else we find dealing inthem."
The three companies are Stage Oneof Haslemere, Surrey, Bullet Records ofRugeley, Staffordshire and Rose Re-cords of North London.
Last Wednesday in the High CourtStage One agreed to pay £75,000 dam-ages and costs and also submitted topermanent injunctions restraining it
from importing or dealing in recordsmanufactured outside the EEC.
Stage One had been visited by BPIsolicitors the previous week, and appro-ximately 10,000 albums, manufacturedin Portugal, Spain, Canada, Sweden,Switzerland and New Zealand werefound on the premises. Madness, StevieWonder and Bob Marley were amongartists whose product Stage One washandling.
Stage One has applied for BPI mem-bership. This is to be considered at aforthcoming BPI council meeting.
The Stage One action followed a visitby BPI solicitors to Bullet Records at theend of last month when more than31,000 LPs weighing seven and a halftons were removed from the firm'spremises.

"I find it laughable that the recordcompanies thought that InternationalMusic Show was a dubious propositionjust because it is the first event of itskind to be staged in Britain."
He criticised the industry for spend-
ing huge amounts of money at MIDEMwhile an IMS stand for the six -day eventwould represent an investment ofaround £1,000."
"This would have been a wonderfulopportunity for the record industry toimprove its public image and reap someof the benefits of getting involveddirectly with the record buying public. Ifirmly believe that IMS will be doingsomething very useful for the Britishmusic business on an international leveland it is a shame that the record industryhas not responded in a big way."
The show, which runs betweenMarch 13 - 18 is to be opened by AdamAnt and several headline bands - includ-ing 10cc - will be playing eveningconcerts to be broadcast via a satellitelink -up to America Don Kirshner RockShow.

Bullet subsequently agreed in theHigh Court to pay costs and damages of£25,000 and submitted to permanentinjunctions restraining it from import-ing or dealing in none -EEC imports.
On February 10 a further Anton Pillarorder was executed at Rose Records.Proprietor John David Butcher agreedto pay £8,000 damages and submit tosimilar injunctions.
Butcher admitted to dealing in Span-ish product since last July and the BPIbelieves that around 40,000 albums -mainly Motown product - had beenbrought in.
In addition to the parallel importaction, Stage One director TerenceShand agreed to pay £2,500 damagesand costs in respect of an outstandingDutch counterfeit action.
Now the BPI is planning to slam thedoor on importers of foreign -madedeletions and cut-outs to stop suchrecords being sold in British shops ascurrent catalogue items.
John Deacon added: "The BPI coun-cil is extremely concerned about parallelimports and with the success of theseactions and the Polydor victory in theEuropean Court we have proved we canstop these records coming into thecountry.
"However, I would like to make itclear that anyone who is in any doubtshould contact the BPI who will be onlytoo pleased to advise him. Four substantial actions are con-tinuing against another British importer.

NMIA flurry of big starson unusual labelsMAJOR STARS such as David Bowie,Adam & The Ants, Shakin' Stevens andKraftwerk have forthcoming releases onunfamiliar labels.
Adam and the original Ants arefeatured in two releases for companiesother than CBS. EG have released`Deutscher Girls' (EGO 5) from theJubilee soundtrack by the band and DoIt release an EP on February 26,through Virgin.
The Do It release includes versions of`Cartrouble/KicklYou're So Physical'Friends' (DUN (IT) 20) with the 12 -inch containing all four tracks and the7 -inch just the latter three. The releasewill contain an insert giving a biographyof the material recorded by the group forthe label and name the musicians in-volved.
David Bowie's next release on March2 is for his label RCA, an EP of songsfrom his TV play 'Baal' which features'Beal's Hymn/Ballad Of The Adventur-
ers/Dirty Song, all Brecht compositions.Later in March this will be followed
by an MCA release of 'Putting Out Fire'from the soundtrack of Cat Peoplewhich will be released by MCA later inthe year. This single is produced byGiorgio Moroder.
Shakin' Stevens has been subject ofseveral reissued recordings and thelatest is 'Frantic' an EP on MagnumForce (MFEP7), through PRT.
All rights to Kraftwerk's materialoriginally released by Vertigo havereverted to the act, although a version ofthe single 'Autobahn' is availablethrough Wynd-Up which purchasedPhonogram's Classic Cuts material.Phonogram has just one mid -price col-lection available, but the group's cur-rent label EMI plants to release analbum Autobahn in March.
There are no plans for EMI to reissuethe single at present because it is
expecting new material soon.
EMI's £200,000 TV albumEMI RECORDS has collectedtwenty top tracks for a TV -compilation album featuring DianaRoss, Olivia Newton -John, TheStranglers, Kraftwerk, Kate Bush,Cliff Richard, Sheena Easton,Duran Duran and Kim Wilde.
Twenty With A Bullet (EMTV 32)is released on Friday, February 26,and is being supported by an initialfortnight's £200,000 TV campaignwith 30 -second commercials in thetop three regions, London, Centraland Granada, from March 3. It hasa dealer price of £3.59.
The campaign also includes fullpoint -off -sale back-up with cardmounted centre -pieces and fourcolour posters.
Two current Top 10 singles areincluded, 'The Model' by Kraft-werk and 'Golden Brown' by TheStranglers, while the line-up in-cludes 'Love Makes The WorldGo Round' by The Jets, 'Why DoFools Fall In Love' by Diana Ross,

International distribution networklaunched by London -based LasgoLONDON -BASED exporter Lasgo haslaunched the first international distribu-tors association, to be known as theMusic Industry Distributors' Interna-tional Association (MIDIA).
Membership is virtually closed asLasgo director Mark Ballabon took theopportunity of the international gather-ing at MIDEM to consolidate theinterest shown by leading independentdistributors in North America, Europe,Australia and the Far East.
Lasgo now claims to have the majorindependent distributors in these terri-tories as members of MIDIA, althoughno details of the 20 -plus companies areavailable at present.
Principal aims of the association areto: "form a tight -knit internationalnetwork with free exchange of creditreferences, product information and theconsolidation of freight.

Faulty Products claim that 50,000copies of the record, which had spentfive weeks in the national chart, werepressed leaving 38,000 in general cir-culation.
A&M sets newmid -price lineA&M RECORDS is the latest companyto launch a mid -price back catalogueseries.
The company has scheduled an initialbatch of 15 albums carrying a dealerprice of £1.82 and a suggested retail tagof £2.99. All are previously best-sellingLPs that are now deleted and appearwith their original artwork, althoughthere will be a special inner bag featur-ing the whole series. The releases arebacked by an in-store campaign.

See For Mileswith CharlyCOLIN MILES, former EMI labelmanager, has formed his own label SeeFor Miles which will be marketed byCharly. The initial emphasis will be onhistorical compilations but he hopes todevelop the label into a talent seeker.
Having worked in promotion, pro-duct management and a&r for theHarvest label, Miles was responsible forthe Harvest Heritage and NUT labelswhich exploit EMI's back catalogue.
When he left EMI in the autumnMiles formed his own independentlicensing company, immediately mak-ing it his business to gain rights to EMImaterial.
This Friday sees the release of the tenalbums on the See For Miles/Charlylabel. Now CBS seekcourt rulingagainst RachelCBS RECORDS has begun a courtaction in the Southern District Courtin New York against Rachel Music -formerly known as Leosong Music - ofLondon.
The American company is seekingto declare that Rachel Music has nofurther right to deal in certain recordsby artists including The Shirelles, B. J.Thomas, The Platters, Dionne War-wick, Gene Pitney and George Jones.
CBS is the successor in interest toSpringboard International and gavenotice terminating the rights of RachelMusic for failure to act and payroyalties. Rachel contested the ter-mination.
The action seeks a judgement de-claring that Rachel's rights are termin-ated, an injunction against its con-tinued dealings in the previouslylicensed recordings, and an orderdirecting Rachel to account to CBSand to pay royalties due under thelicence deal.
Spandau's boxof 12-inchersSPANDAU BALLET'S forthcomingChrysalis album Diamond - scheduledfor March 15 release - will be availableboth as a standard LP and a boxed set of12 -inch singles.

WITH THE benefits of hindsight, Iwould like to talk about the aspects ofChristmas which were an unmitigateddisaster.
Of course, the weather didn't help,neither did the general effects of therecession, but the industry itself must beheld responsible for many of the short-falls in potential trading aspirations.
The basic problem, to start with, wasthat dealers just did not know what tostock or in what depth. TV was blitzedby many itsy-bitsy campaigns, somemis-timed and often unnoticed. Sup-pliers were quite unable to cope with thefluctuations of demand. Of the dozensof TV albums, only K -Tel's Chart Hits81, the CBS Abba album and EMI'sQueen's Greatest Hits were consistentlyavailable at source and fromwholesalers.
However EMI suddenly re -promotedCliff Richard's Love Songs collectionwithout telling anybody. Though theTV advertisement went right throughthe Christmas sales week, stock wasexhausted everywhere, it seems, by theTuesday!
Ronco and Warwick product wasparticularly difficult to fmd and we werestill having problems getting Hits HitsHits two weeks after Christmas.
With everyone gasping for sales itreally is not good enough that dealershave to play the game of 'hunt thewholesaler with stock'. Often by thetime we had found it the public hadforgotten it. With so many TV albums

around it was difficult for even the mostastute dealer to identify what the cus-tomer meant by "that record I saw onTV last night".
Make no mistake TV merchandisers:that, on average, is how the public asksfor your product. A new element thisseason has been "do I have to send awayfor it or can I get it here" - anotherconfusion introduced because of thedirect sell systems. I hope that TVmerchandisers grasp the nettle, realisethat many of their messages are neitherclear nor understood and fmd a betterway of doing things in future.
Nor was it only the TV albums thatcaused the dealer to tear his hair out.After an otherwise excellent year CBSsuddenly started taking four days ondelivery and I was none too pleased toreceive my post -Christmas order invoice

On a brighter note, EMI did very well- no delays and excellent fills - furth-ermore EMI Record Tokens showed anincrease of sales by 14 per cent overDecember 1980 in my shop, no doubthelped by the general lack of productavailability.
Once again, price confusion reignedsupreme. The Crackdown price cam-paign by one multiple turned out to beeffective on only some 10 per cent ofcatalogue. The £3.99 campaign ofanother seemed to mean just that - itincluded items that most of us wouldnormally sell at £2.99! And I understandthat some of the cheapo offers turnedout to be faulty, Elkie Brooks' Pearls forexample.
When all is considered, this Christ-mas must have been an example to theindustry. It has to decide which way it
wants to go. It must either cut its clothstill further to meet the continuingdecline in non -chart catalogue and spe-cialist record sales, or it should adherestrictly to the published dealer pricesand terms and conditions of trading.
Surely this industry must be aware ofthe dire effects of its actions over the lastfew years. It must realise the consequ-ences of pandering to short-term exing-encies, and it must be big enough andstrong enough to now resist the com-mercial bully boy tactics which have ledto price -wars and price confusion. All ofthis for the sake of what is really a merehandful of titles.
Full marks to the Record And VideoRetailers Organisation's new vice-chairman Alan Davidson for his NewYear statement. He said what I havebeen saying in this column for the lasttwo years. This is a specialist industryand the continued de -specialisation atretail level will be its downfall.

Greg, in the business since he was 16,knows exactly what he's doing. "I'm notjust going to take Bomp and say 'this iswhat's happening in the States - nowaccept it here'," he says. "To be viable,you have to get into the English sceneand see things from an English point ofview. Eventually we hope to build aroster of English acts, a kind of family ofgroups like we have in the US. I thinkwe could provide an opening that maynot exist in this country."
Bomp specialises in pop, surf, andpsychedelic music, although the termsare given a wide definition. "We wantthe label to be associated with fun,having a good time."
Psychedelia is of course currentlyenjoying considerable interest in the
UK, but Greg denies that Bomp isfollowing trends. "I've been into 60smusic since the 60s ended," he says"From 1970 things went downhill - bigvenues, supergroups. Besides, Americais not as dominated by sudden trendsand fashions as the UK.
"There's now a whole spectrum ofstyles. around. Bands can dip in andcreate something new, rather than oper-ate in the strict revival sense. The StrayCats are a great rockabilly band, but youdidn't hear music like theirs in the 50s."
What about the common criticismthat American music, especially WestCoast, is bland and unimaginative? "Iknow people here think US music isstaid," he replies, "much of it is - butthere's still a lot that isn't. The USpsychedelic movement is very different.It's a grass roots thing, slightly different

An indie label in the USA has evenmore problems than its English counter-part. "Media exposure is limited to theclub circuit and college radio - to whichnobody listens. There are around 5,000of these, each with an average 10 to 12mile broadcast radius. The best isKROQ in Los Angeles, where they playnew records which can be heard over awide area. But again it's not easy to geton the air."
Bomp seemed to overcome the prob-lem of publicity quite effectively withthe recent release of Josie Cotton's'Johnny Are You Queer?'. WhenKROQ played the disc, America'spowerful 'moral majority' picketed thestation en masse. Shortly after theirarrival, LA's local gay groups turned upto counter -demonstrate. When, forsome unknown reason, a neo-Nazi orga-nisation also put in an appearance, thescene became dramatic enough to bereported on networked TV news bulle-tins, ensuring maximum coverage for'Johnny'.. "Really we couldn't have hoped for abetter reaction," admits Greg. "We'vegot to break down barriers. All the hipAmerican kids only listen to Englishgroups at the moment. You get clubswhere that's all that is played."
'Johnny Are You Queer?' also hap-pens to be Bomp International's firstrelease in the UK. Reactions have notbeen quite as extreme here. Radio -1 andmost local independent stations haveshown a strong disinclination to play it,but our lack of an equivalent aggressivemoral majority seems to indicate that noone was offended enough to draw usefulattention to the record.
Bomp's next single will be 'A MillionMiles Away' from The Plimsouls,which, Shaw assures the world, has"nothing remotely offensive about it".

Clapton nev-er again produced the total commit-ment to the blues and real emotion thatcan be heard on 'Key To Love','Double Crossin' Time' and the sub-lime 'Have You Heard' ('Presence of
the Lord' and 'Layla' fall into a differentgenre completely). Sales possibilitiescannot be computed but then neithercan some of the far-reaching effects ofthe playing contained herein.
THE CHURCH: The Church (CarrereCAL 130) Prod: Chris Gilbey/BobClearmountainOne of the few band of the new wave ofpsychedelia that sound at allpsychedelic on record, The Churchhark back to the heady days of thelate 60s without smacking too much ofartifice. Most of the material is writtenby producer Chris Gilbey who obvious-ly has definite ideas about leadingsongs with 12 -string guitar riffs andplenty of big beat. The result is slightlyfaceless and very English, but good,strong pop that could take off given theairplay.
VARIOUS ARTISTS: Golden Hits Of1958 (MfP 50551)First in a series of restrospectives titledSavile's Time Travels (endorsed bythe famed Jimmy) this is aimed atraising money for Stoke MandevilleSpinal Unit. For the most part it is acompilation of ageless classics,among them 'Great Balls Of Fire','Move It', 'Summertime Blues', 'OhBoy', and 'At The Hop'. Songs by AlmaCogan, Laurie London, Kalin Twins,Michael Holliday and Pat Boone pro-vide not always comfortable contrasts.

Disco DealerTHE RAM'S HORN label from Hol-land crops up on the UK import scenewith variable frequency, but usuallywith something interesting to offer.The latest Ram's Horn 12-incher, thefirst for several months, features re-cent hitmakers Skyy (New York Skyy,of course, when they're on a UKlabel), with the familiar title 'Call Me' -but as is par for the course for Ram'sHorn, it's a remixed version of thealbum cut. Moreover, the coupling isthe 'Let's Celebrate' hit, but eitherheavily remixed from the very basics,or otherwise a total re-recording of thesong. The disc is proving sufficientlyinteresting and different from thestandard releases to be creating quite abuzz already in several areas.
The Barry McCloud Organisationhas announced a deal which will bringdisco product from the AmericanPosse label to the UK, via the newly -formed Cricket label. This will includethe current bubbler 'Get Up AndDance' by Mynk, which should formthe first release in a week or so, butother items by Glory and Ritz are alsoscheduled imminently. The,new labelis pushing its name by extending theCricket theme to the catalogue pre-fixes of the records as well - LBW for7 -inch, HOWZAT on 12 -inch, andRUNOUT for albums.
New import albums represent quitea strong bunch. From Holland, andagain on Ram's Horn, comes InstantFunk's Look So Fine, a release whichseems to have beaten the Americanoriginal onto the market. From theStates comes Roy Ayers with FeelingGood (Polydor); Mystic Merlin's FullMoon (Capitol); Pure And Natural fromT -Connection (Capitol); Coffee'sSecond Cup (De-Lite); and Millie Jack-son with another triple X-rated set LiveAnd Outrageous (Spring).

More stimulation for usin video, sayGodley & CremeINTERVIEWING DYNAMIC duoGodley & Creme is rather like servingsoup with a sieve. In exasperation thejournalist is forced to ask whether thereis anything they don't do, just to savetime.
Recording artists, producers, studioowners, inventors, directors, authors,illustrators, and 24 -hour livewires - allthis makes up Godley & Creme, aninseparable duo who rose to fame ashalf of the enormously successful lOCC.
Kevin Godley and Lol Creme wreborn in Manchester, shortly after thewar, and have been friends since theirdays in short trousers. Professionallytheir partnership has entered its 23rdyear without any sign of flagging.
Today they are known as one of themost creative video director teams in thebusiness and deserved winners of theVideo Business directors award for bestpromotional video for a major recordingcompany.
The award was won for 'Mind Of AToy' recorded by Visage, an act whichexists in name only. With the usualavenues of promotion, such as touring,effectively ruled out it was vital thatvideo gave Visage a strong image, andthis Godley & Creme provided.
Video is seen as a major step on theroad to the duo's eventual aim - direct-ing a feature film - and, although thegreat percentage of Godley & Creme'scareer has been spent in music, it is therealisation of an early hope.
"We are frustrated film makers.When we were young we had access tosound equipment and not film, but wealways used music to present visualideas down to album titles like TheOriginal Soundtrack. It has always beenour ambition to make a film, it seemedmuch more exciting than recording,"commented Creme.
The duo began making videos whenthe opportunity arose to produce one topromote their own Polydor single 'AnEnglishman In New York' in November1979. It was no coincidence that therecord had little success in the UKwhere the video was rarely seen butreached Number One, or close, every-where else in the world where the videowas acclaimed.
IT WAS at Polydor that Steve Strange ofVisage saw the Godley & Creme videoand invited them to direct a video for thebreakthrough single 'Fade To Grey'.The pair have not looked back since.
Videos followed for Toyah 'I Want ToBe Free' and 'Thunder In The Moun-tains', Duran Duran 'Girls On Film'Status Quo 'Something 'Bout YouBaby', Joan Armatrading 'Weakness InMe' and !When I Get It Right', theirown 'Wedding Bells' and 'Wide Boy'and of course the award winning 'MindOf A Toy' by Visage.
Kevin Godley and LolCreme recently won the`Video Business' Top Direc-tors award for video making.They talk to PAUL CAMP-BELL about the challenge ofmaking music videos.
Recently the partnership was em-ployed by Paul McCartney's MPL Com-munications to put together a video forthe three tracks McCartney wrote forthe current Ringo Starr album Stop AndSmell The Roses. The work featuredacting roles for Starr and his actress wifeBarbara Bach and is not only a combina-tion of three promotional videos but amini -feature in its own right.
For Godley & Creme the opportunityto build visual works around recordedmusic could not have come at a bettertime. "The new medium of video camealong and presented the opportunity tocombine the two. Now we really likedoing videos because they are so fast andimmediate. Compared to recordingthere is more stimulation for less input,"said Godley.
In addition he and Creme are bran-ching out into commercials. Havingprovided music for commercials in thepast the duo was pleased to be asked torecord both the audio and visual for thenew Wrangler television advertisementand one for the Alliance Building Socie-ty is planned. In 1979 they won a GoldMedal from the Design and Art Direc-tors Association for the music for Ben-son & Hedges 'desert' cinema commer-cial.
As far as their eventual aim ofdirecting feature films is concerned
Godley & Creme are moving steadily inthe right direction. "We are still gainingexperience of the craft and in film termsthe next step is to do a short. We have noshortage of ideas and are talking toseveral people about them," said Creme.
UNLIKE MANY creative people whomove from one sphere into another theyseem intent on keeping all their variousprojects on the go at once. In recordingterms the duo has not been as successfulsince leaving 10CC as they are today.`Wedding Bells' and 'Under YourThumb' gave them a strong return to thecharts at Christmas and the latest albumIsmism is their best selling to date.
The duo has a good reputation asrecord producers and they still like towork with other artists when timepermits. Recently they have produced asingle with promising chart newcomersBlue Rondo A La Turk and they alsohave a track on the latest Jona Lewiealbum.

Godley and Creme have always beenfrustrated film makers.
time to record snatches of their ownmaterial for a new album to be releasedthis year. They are also inventors - their`Gizmotron' turns a guitar sound into astring section - and are constantlyworking on revolutionary ideas.
Last year saw publication of theirbook The Fun Starts Here complete withillustrations - both were art students -and their artistic skills have producedwhat is perhaps their most ambitiousproject to date - designing a symbol forthe Olympic movement to replace thefive linked circles.
Whether or not Godley & Creme willbe able to continue all areas of theirmulti -faceted career when they arrive inHollywood in the not too distant futureremains to be seen.
