The Band Plays On

I was delighted to see the article on pages 28 and 29 of the winter 2005 Mines magazine onthe CSM band. I was student director of the band in 1957-1958. My description of ournon-traditional uniform allowed my wife to sit up and notice when the band appearedbriefly on “Extreme Makeover.”

The only difference I detected from our appearance in 1957-58 was the hard hats – we stillused the traditional style with brim all the way around. I hope that nighttime performancesare still assisted by carbide lamps attached to the hats. They were great for torchlightparades. I impressed my somewhat more musical children by telling that our principalconcert appearance was for the Sowbelly Dinner of the Colorado Mining Association. Onemore thing – in those years, when the undergraduate female attendance of CSM maxed atsix, the band was all male – but the largest man in the band played clarinet, and thesmallest was the bass drummer!

Do You Remember the Astor House?

The Astor House in Golden was purchased by Ida Goetz at the turn of the 20th century andwas run as a boarding house until 1950. Now a museum, the history of the house is beingresearched by volunteers. We have a particular historical interest in the 1867 to 1908 timeperiod. We would like to identify the text books being used and the nature of the classes atthe School. For instance, we would like to be able to say, here is what Mines students did in1905. Any students who had a relationship either as a resident or boarder at the AstorHouse in any time period could be of significant help. Please contact me if you have anystories to relate.

The effort to mold future scientists, mathematiciansand engineers begins early and Colorado School ofMines is helping with the effort. As a former director ofthe National Science Foundation (NSF) said, “We cannotexpect the task of science and math education to be theresponsibility solely of K-12 teachers while scientists,engineers and graduate students remain busy in theiruniversity laboratories.” Over the past three years, fourprojects at Mines, funded by the NSF, the ColoradoCommission on Higher Education, the ColoradoDepartment of Education and others, have focused onproviding middle-school teachers with instruction inmathematics and science in order to improve theeducational experiences of middle-school students. Thegoal is to help teachers develop hands-on classroomlearning environments that illustrate how mathematicscan be applied to earth science and engineering.

Each of the four projects holds eight- to 10-dayworkshop sessions designed around a theme and thatdemonstrate hands-on activities to illustrate the value ofmath and science in real-world problem solving. CathySkokan BSc Geop ’70, MSc Geop ’72, PhD Geop ’75, oneof the program directors, says that in the real world,math and science always work in concert. The activitiesfor participants include building bridges out of Popsicle

sticks,re-engineering a diaper,designing awater filtrationsystem usingsand, learninghow to do anenergy auditand inventingmusicalinstruments. Atthe end of theworkshop, eachparticipant receives $500 to purchase supplies to takeback to their schools. Teachers then use ideas andmaterials from the workshops in their middle-school classrooms.

Professors Barbara Moskal and Skokan direct andcoordinate the workshops, but they’ve recently delegatedthe responsibility of teaching the workshops to graduatefellows. Doing so allows them to travel and present theproject at conferences in an effort, Moskal says, “to shareour methods and results with respect to K-12 outreach

with our national and international colleagues.”Last year, the professors went to Florida,

Utah, China and India; this year

they’ll go to Oregon, Australia and Poland. In addition,graduate students promote the program by makingpresentations about the workshops at nationalconferences.

All of the projects also include follow-up classroomvisits from CSM faculty or graduate students in which theteachers receive assistance in implementing hands-onmathematics and science instruction. In the GK-12Learning Partnership project, graduate students providedirect support in the classroom to a given teacher for 10 to15 hours each week. In the Physical Science & Mathematicsproject, students provide help in the classroom for onehour every other week. The appropriate amount ofsupport needed is currently being scientifically analyzed.

Keith Hellman, oneof the CSMgraduate studentswho spends timein several schoolseach week, says themost excitingaspect of theexperience is that“students can askvery insightful andvery motivatedquestions.”Hellman has been

surprised, he says, “by how much work it takes to be agood teacher and how much pressure teachers are under to

show progress onassessments. Ourculture does notdo enough toreward, encourageand assist thepeople who,arguably, have themost influenceover our future.”

Skokan explainsthat middleschools rather thanhigh schools werechosen as partnersbecause middle-school teachers often don’t hold degrees inthe subjects they teach, so they may lack contentknowledge. These teachers need an opportunity to learnand understand the concepts they are required to teach.Further, research shows that middle school is a crucialtime for kids. Moskal, the GK-12 Learning Partnershipproject director, says that it’s during the middle-schoolyears that students may opt out of the academic classesthat are prerequisites for advanced science andmathematics courses in high school and beyond. “Studentsfrom low-income families are at an even greater risk ofdisplaying weak mathematical and scientific knowledgewhen compared to their middle-class peers,” Skokan adds.To increase the number of students who continue theireducation into higher mathematics and science, she says,

“It’s important to provide activities that excite students.By showing kids that there are meaningful, real-worldapplications, we stand a better chance of not onlyholding their interest, but also that they might pursue

math and science into their adult lives.”

The project includes a numberof tools to determine whether ornot it is effective. Participatingclassroom teachers take tests beforeand after the workshops and alsoprovide daily feedback. Minesfaculty meet regularly withteachers in focus groups and thereis also an independent evaluator from the University ofColorado School of Education. Also, there will be ColoradoStudent Assessment Program (CSAP) data to indicate theimpact of these programs. Agata Dean BSc Eng ’04, a graduatefellow involved in the project, plans to write her master’s thesison the effect of these programs onCSAP scores. Students LeanneMiller and Tina Ziemek arefocusing their master’s theses oneducational projects that aredesigned to improve middle-school students’ learning ofmathematics and science.

Moskal and Skokan believe thebenefits of the project are far-reaching. In addition to some5,500 young students they estimate

the project has reached, CSMgraduate students also get anopportunity to improve theirverbal communication skills bothin teacher workshops and in theclassroom. While the Minesstudents are offering valuablematerials and knowledge toclassroom teachers, in return, theyare gaining pedagogical knowledgeand teaching experience, which is

important because many of the participating graduate studentsare considering careers in education. Graduate students LeanneMiller and Michael Ewing also have learned to write grantproposals to fund and develop technology camps for middle-school students. Miller and Tamera Hockett BSc Eng ’04 have

been successful in assisting theparticipating teachers in writinggrant proposals for classroomsupplies. At least three of thestudent-written proposals havebeen funded so far. Perhaps moreimportantly, as Keith Hellmanpoints out, “the most rewardingaspect is simply the opportunity to help.”

Toilers Tackle Mobile Networks

The Toilers, a mathematical andcomputer sciences research group offour professors and approximately15 students, currently has fiveNational Science Foundation (NSF)grants, all concerning various aspectsof mobile networks. Last fallProfessors Tracy Camp and MikeColagrosso BSc Math & Comp Sci ’99 organized two NSF-fundedmeetings related to the networkingof sensor systems focus area at NSF.

Simulation code (10 differentpackages) developed by members ofthe Toilers has been requested fromand shared with more than 280researchers at 189 research labs anduniversities in 34 countries.

From Brooks Field to State Capitol

Members of Colorado’s Senate andHouse of Representatives extendedtheir “heartiest congratulations” to

the 2004 Mines football team at theState Capitol in February. Theofficial commendation cited theOrediggers for:

■ Completing their best season in School history and winning their

first conference championship since 1958

■ Finishing the regular season undefeated and advancing to the NCAA Division II playoffs

■ Having Head Coach Bob Stitt honored as the 2004 Division II

International Recognition for Illangasekare

Tissa Illangasekare has been named a Fellow ofthe American Geophysical Union (AGU), an

international society that advances theunderstanding of Earth and space for the benefitof humanity. AGU has more than 41,000 membersin over 130 countries. Illangasekare, the AmaxDistinguished Chair in the Division ofEnvironmental Science and Engineering, willaccept the honor and certificate at the AGUmeeting in New Orleans in May. Each year nomore than 0.1 percent of the AGU membershipmay be elected Fellows.

In addition, the Asian Institute of Technology has selected Illangasekare as a member of itsAcademic Advisory Panel, comprised of up to 18 eminent academics from around the world.

Mishra Named Fellow

Brajendra Mishra has been named a Fellow ofASM International, The Materials InformationSociety with a worldwide membership of 36,000.

Mishra, a professor in the Metallurgical andMaterials Engineering Department,was cited “for distinguished contributions to education and research in high temperature electrochemical and pyrometallurgical materials processing,and for outstanding achievements in adoption ofsurfaceengineering technologiesfor improvedtribology.”

All Dressed Up,Someplace To Go

For area high schools girls whocouldn’t afford a prom dress thisspring, Mines women looked in theirclosets and found more than 50formal evening gowns to donate tothe local 6th Annual Prom DressExchange. CSM’s assistance with theproject was sponsored by theDiversity Committee in honor ofWomen’s History Month.

Student Chapter a GEM

Mines’ student chapter of the Societyfor Mining, Metallurgy, andExploration (SME) was awarded theGovernment, Education and Mining(GEM) award in February at theSME annual conference. To increasethe public’s awareness of mining-related industries, students:

■ Visited elementary schools and gave tours on campus

■ Participated in E-Days competitions

■ Gave tours of CSM’s experimental Edgar Mine in Idaho Springs.

Mines hosted its 15thAnnual Wellness Dayin March at the BenParker Student Center.This year’s theme was“The Five Dimensions ofWellness: Physical,Emotional, Spiritual,Social and Intellectual.”

Visitors to the event, whichfeatured 35 local vendors,had the opportunity togather health information andmeet local wellness experts, aswell as benefit from screenings,demonstrations and giveaways.Topics included massage,acupuncture, outdoor activities andfitness, emotional health, body fattesting and healthy eating.

Homework Help

Members of Phi Gamma Deltafraternity are volunteer tutors for

area students in grades one to 12.They provide help in all classroomsubjects. Fraternity members are available for homeworkconsultations two afternoons a weekin the children’s room of the GoldenPublic Library.

SWE-ET Deal

The Mines student section of theSociety of Women Engineers(SWE) has received a $2,000grant to increase their outreachto students in local middleschools. Their project, calledSWE-ET Links (SWE-Engineering and

Technology Links), will be fundedby the ExxonMobil ProgramDevelopment Grant. In their requestto the national SWE ProgramDevelopment Grants Committee,

Mines SWE members said, “Not onlydo we hope to further educate youngstudents about what engineering is,but we also hope to create a greatersense of confidence for girls in mathand science.”

Lydia Muwanga, a seniormajoring in engineering, helped

organize the spring art show.

Asteroid Kenlarner

An asteroid discovered in 2001finally has a name. It’sKenlarner, in honor ofUniversity Emeritus ProfessorKenneth L. Larner GeopE ’60,PhD Geop ’70 who retired in2004 from Mines afterserving for 16 years as theCharles Henry GreenProfessor of ExplorationGeophysics.

Joe Dellinger and WilliamG. Dillon, geophysicistsand members of the FortBend (Texas)Astronomy Club,

discovered asteroid Kenlarner at theGeorge Observatory in Brazos BendState Park, Needville, Texas.

Dellinger describes the asteroid as “achunk of rock approximately twokilometers across,” and explains thatit “generally takes about four years offollowing an asteroidbefore it becomespermanentlynumbered and eligiblefor naming.”

In the official citationto the Committee onSmall BodyNomenclature, theinternational body ofastronomers thatapproves proposedminor planet names,Larner is described as a“world-renowned explorationgeophysicist recognized for his quiet leadership skills.”

Marvin L. Kay EM ’63 emeritusprofessor of physical education andathletics, delivered the FacultySenate Distinguished Lecture inFebruary. “Mines Athletics andAcademics, Then and Now—andHow!” emphasized that striving forexcellence in athletics not onlyimpacts the educational experienceof individual students, but alsoelevates and broadens the reputationof the entire institution.

The Faculty Senate DistinguishedLecturer Award, established in 1990,gives the Mines faculty theopportunity to annually recognizeone of their outstanding colleagues.

They select a lecturer admired andrespected as an educator, as well as aperson known for havingstimulating ideas to convey and anability to communicate those ideas effectively.

Kay retired in 2004 as director ofathletics, a position he had heldsince 1995. From 1969 to 1995, Kaywas the Oredigger head footballcoach, and he is the all-timewinningest coach in School historywith 84 wins. In addition to theFaculty Senate DistinguishedLecturer Award, Mines has alsohonored Kay with a Mines Medal in2003, and the Alumni Associationnamed Kay “Outstanding Alumnus”in 2002.

Art Show

“Captured Creativity,” the spring artexhibition held at Arthur LakesLibrary, was sponsored by theCreative Arts Club. The event

showcased artwork, including theunveiling of a mural titled “Man vs.Nature and Technology,” as well asmusic and poetry readings.

Dust a Real Danger to Space Missions

Dust is more than a housekeepingchallenge for space explorationmissions to the moon and Mars.

Apollo moon missions revealed theexistence of dust resemblingvolcanic ash, which penetratedsensors, door seals, spacesuits,science samples and spacecraftmachinery. Significant problemswith dust have also caused motorbearings to fail on Mars rovers.With no method of reducing the

effects of this dust for futuremissions, extended stays on themoon or Mars would be at risk.

Researchers at the Space ResearchPartnership Center at Mines havebeen awarded a $14.6 millioncontract to work with three NASAcenters, five universities, and sevenindustry partnersto meet thedustchallenge.MasamiNakagawa,associateprofessor in theMining EngineeringDepartment, heads theproject, focusing on specialtechnology for spacesuits,

vehicles and manufacturing plants in space. Methods of sensing,characterizing and mitigating dustwill be tested in a cryogenic vacuum

system at Mines.

Mullinax ’47 PublishesWWII Memories

James A. “Pete” Mullinax Geol E’47 has recently published Foesby Fate…Friends by Choice, anaccount of his experiences inWorld War II. Mullinax was aB-17 pilot during one of themost intense air battles ofthe war. He was shot downand became a prisoner ofwar in Germany. Mullinaxnot only survived, but made friends withmany Germans. As he says, the book “demonstratesthe significance of the horrors of war and the ability to be at peace– not only with yourself – but with those who were fightingagainst you. This is the miracle and gift of humanity.”

Titley ’51 and McNulty ’67 Earn High Honors

Spencer R. Titley Geol E ’51, an economicgeologist internationally known for hiswork on the origin of porphyry copperdeposits, and Terry McNulty DSc Met ’67,president of T. P. McNulty & Associates Inc.and a leader in mineral processinghydrometallurgy, were elected to theNational Academy ofEngineering (NAE).

Election to the NAE is among the highestprofessional distinctions accorded anengineer. Titley and McNulty are among 74new members and 10 foreign associatesrecognized this year for outstandingcontributions to engineering research,practice or education. Those elected this yearbring the total U.S. membership to 2,195.

Three AlumniReceive SME Awards

Raymond L. Lowrie MSc Min Ec ’72 waspresented with the Society of Mining,Metallurgy and Exploration’s President’sCitation “for leading SME’s ProfessionalRegistration Committee through its mostchallenging years and for editing SME’saward-winning, best-selling SME MiningReference Handbook. The handbook was recognized in 2004 as an Outstanding

Academic Title by Choice Magazine, a publication of the AmericanLibrary Association.

Anthony K. Staley BSc CPR’97, MSc Eng & Tech Mgmt

’02, PhD Met & Mat Eng ’02was named the SME’s Mineral

and Metallurgical ProcessingDivision’s Outstanding Young

Engineer. After receiving his PhDfrom Mines, Staley joined Newmont

Mining’s technical services team as asenior metallurgist. He providestechnical support for processingfacilities and metallurgical testing and process development ofnew ore bodies.

F. Steven Mooney Geol E ’56 was awardedSME’s William Lawrence Saunders GoldMedal recognizing distinguishedachievement in mining other than coal.Mooney is CEO of Thompson Creek MetalsCompany in Colorado. He has also served on the CSM Board of Trustees.

Graduate Student Takes Top HonorsLast fall, the student research ofTeresa Barnes PhD CPR ’04 wasrecognized as the top graduateresearch within the AVSSemiconductor Division at the 51st

International Symposium of theAmerican Vacuum Society (AVS).In December, she was among 30graduate students at the annualmeeting of the Materials Research Society(MRS) invited to compete for an additional award before ablue ribbon evaluation panel. Based on a presentation of p-typeconductivity in nitrogen-doped zinc oxide thin films, Barnes wasselected as one of the top seven graduate students to receive theMRS’ prestigious Gold Award. She is the first CSM student to winsuch an award.

Bickart Named ABET FellowTed Bickart Hon Mem’99, CSM presidentemeritus, received a 2004 Fellow ofAccreditation Board forEngineering andTechnology (ABET) award.He was honored for hisleadership within theInstitute of Electrical andElectronics Engineers (IEEE)for accreditation activities, forhis contributions to theintegration of computingprograms into ABET and for hislengthy service as a programevaluator and member of the Engineering AccreditationCommission (EAC). Mollison ’58 Inducted into Hall of Honor Jim Mollison Geol E ’58 was inducted into the South DakotaHighway Hall of Honor in 2004. During the 20 years he worked inthe transportation industry, Mollison left a lasting and valuable

contribution by continually promotinghighway funding, communication,cooperation, legislation andprofessionalism. He actively promotedand hosted annual gatherings andmeetings of both the American andWestern Associations of State Highwayand Transportation Officials for thepurpose of improving communicationand relations between Department ofTransportation officials in South Dakota,

North Dakota, Wyoming and Montana. His efforts facilitated thedevelopment of a multi-state group called the Bread BasketCoalition, which resulted in a significant improvement in theformula share of federal highway funds going to each of the statesin the coalition. Energy issues appear daily innewspapers, magazines and televisionnews across the nation and the world.

It didn’t use to be that way; rather, abundantcheap energy supplies were generally takenfor granted with only intermittentdisruptions, such as the Arab oil embargo inthe ’70s and occasional power failures such asthe black-out in some Great Lakes states andadjacent Canada two years ago. Today,however, our nation’s and the world’sattention is focused on the imbalancebetween the rate of new hydrocarbondiscoveries and the rate of production,making many predict that a global peak in oilproduction is just around the corner. Equallydisturbing is the geographic imbalancebetween the location of the world’s major oiland gas supplies and the largest markets, withattendant security concerns. Finally, thedirect linkage between increases in globaltemperature and industrial production ofCO2 has now been demonstrated beyond any

reasonable scientific doubt (Fig. 1). Prudentmanagement of risks related to dislocationsof climate-related economic activitiesrequires mitigation against further rapidclimate change.

These three problems are real and veryserious, yet accelerated implementation ofthe proper technology and policy couldgreatly reduce their negative impacts.Industry understands that these issues arereal, serious and – solvable. For example in2004, Lord Browne, chief executive of BP,noted: “Global warming is real and needs tobe addressed now. Rather than bash or

mourn the defunct Kyoto Protocol, weshould start taking the small steps to reducecarbon dioxide emissions today that canmake a big difference down the road. Theprivate sector already understands this and itsefforts will be crucial in improving fossil fuelefficiency and developing alternative sourcesof energy. To harness business potential,however, governments in the developedworld must create incentives, improvescientific research and forge internationalpartnerships.” Similar views are alsoexpressed by Lord Oxburgh, chairman ofShell. “No one can be comfortable at theprospect of continuing to pump out theamounts of carbon dioxide that we arepumping out at present…with consequencesthat we really can’t predict but are probablynot good.”

CO2 emissions to the atmosphere can andmust be reduced to mitigate global warming.Removal of some atmospheric CO2 can be

aided by planting trees and use ofagricultural land management practicesthat more effectively retain carbon insoils. Also, it can be achieved by creatinggrowing market demand for CO2 in theoil industry. It is this latter approach thatoffers the greatest potential for linkingclimate change mitigation to increasedrecovery of oil from existing fields, hencea delay in the date of “peak oil.”

A number of progressive energycompanies already have engaged inproduction practices that use CO2 as ameans of extracting more oil fromunderground reservoirs. For example,here in the Rocky Mountains,ChevronTexaco has applied CO2 forenhanced oil recovery (EOR, or IORfor “improved” oil recovery) at thegiant Rangely Field in Colorado since1986. Amoco began similar CO2-EORat Baroil in Wyoming in 1987 (Fig. 2;the fields are now owned by Merit Oil) and Anadarko began CO2-EOR at Patrick Draw and Salt Creek fieldsin Wyoming in January 2004. In the

Energy Congress in Sydney, Australia, Kjell Bendiksen,director of the Institute for Energy Technology in Norway,emphasized this point by declaring that “the enormousshort-term energy demand growth in the developingcountries will, in all probability, be covered almostexclusively by fossil fuels. For that reason, the world needsto develop and deploy low-emitting technology on a verylarge scale.” To achieve this “policy and fiscal mechanismsare generally overemphasized and the need for newtechnology is critically underrated.”

Two of the largest energy issues identified at the outsetwere global warming due to CO2 emissions and thedeclining rate of oil reserves replacement throughexploration. The observations above make a strong casefor coupling these issues via technological, economic andregulatory mechanisms because one problem is, in fact,part of the solution to the other. CO2 is a resource thatthe world no longer can afford to waste by emitting it intothe atmosphere. Business, government and the technologycommunity need a change in mindset, where CO2 nolonger is considered only an undesirable greenhouse gas(which it is) to be put away (sequestered) at huge costsboth in dollars and added energy consumption, but thepotential driver behind a “revolution” in the world’s oilproduction scenarios. A cap and trade bill, probablymodeled after the pending McCain-Liebermanamendment to the energy bill, is one mechanism wherebythe economic incentives for CO2-EOR would growthrough the added value of earned carbon credits. Similarapproaches have greatly aided the world’s effort to reduceacid rain.

For carbon credits to work, and to enable this proposedscenario to achieve significant mitigation of globalwarming, the source of CO2 must, of course, beanthropogenic. The current practice in the EOR industryof using CO2 that is co-produced with natural gas fromsubsurface reservoirs is economically attractive in today’sbusiness climate where the only added value is that ofincremental produced oil. With proper accounting for thecosts of global warming through the added value ofcarbon credit trades, however, anthropogenic sourceswould soon become the option of choice for the CO2-EOR industry. Making such CO2 sources attractive toindustry is one of those “underrated technology needs”referred to in Bendiksen’s quote above. A major researchand development effort is needed now to produce pureCO2 from flue gas at prices that are competitive withtoday’s CO2 delivered from underground gas reservoirs.

Challenges faced by new directions of industrialdevelopment are, of course, the life-blood of opportunityfor engineering-oriented research institutions. Therefore,the Colorado Energy Research Institute (CERI), re-enacted by the Colorado Legislature in 2002, and its hostinstitution, the Colorado School of Mines, face a uniqueopportunity to become major players in this emergingtransformation in the global energy industry. Theattitudes and skill sets needed to solve the many complexmultidisciplinary science and engineering problemsinvolved in this industrial transition are in abundantsupply on our campus. The key attitudes relate to thefaculty desire to work across traditional disciplineboundaries, as witnessed by the many successful centers atCSM. CERI is structured to further enhance this cross-disciplinary collaboration by employing research facultyat key interdisciplinary nodes and pursing governmentaland industrial support for longer term, multidisciplinaryprojects. The on-campus skill sets in reservoir characteri-zation, production optimization, drilling technology, CO2

separation and energy economics make CSM the naturalhub for research on key issues related to thistransformation. CERI’s strong linkage to the GasTechnology Institute, one of the institute’s chartermembers (together with CSM and the ColoradoGovernor’s Office of Energy Management andConservation) further strengthens our hand in this R&Darea. Also, CERI is a state institute hosted at CSM butlinked also to University of Colorado and Colorado StateUniversity, who provide additional expertise in fields ofenvironmental law, climate change science, CO2 storageand economics issues, as well as skills in large-scaleproject management.

The very serious energy issues discussed above do havesolutions. Two of the largest challenges, the declining rateof new oil discoveries and the increase in global warmingdue to unchecked CO2 emissions, can and should belinked for the purpose of channeling market forces towardtheir combined solution. A significant part of thatsolution is the development of a worldwide enhanced oilrecovery industry relying on the use of anthropogenicCO2 as the primary stimulus for a dramatic increase inthe amount of oil recovered from already discovered oilfields across the globe. Industry is poised for thischallenge. The scientific and engineering community isready for the task at hand and governments are rapidlygenerating new enabling incentives and strategies for the transformation to take place. CERI, CSM and other Colorado partners are getting on board to make it happen.

Permian Basin of West Texas, there has been an active CO2-EORindustry for about 30 years.

The value and the potential of CO2-EOR are rapidly becomingrecognized worldwide.For example, Jon Chadwick, chairman ofShell Malaysia, offered this vision at a recent IOR conference inKuala Lumpur: “Producing the second half of the world’s knownoil reserves (originally at 2.2 trillion barrels of oil) will besignificantly more challenging than producing the first. Therefore,the decade ahead will be IOR’s finest hour – because it has to be.”

A recent research forum organized by the Society of PetroleumEngineers made it very clear that we no longer can accept the pastindustrial practice of leaving about two thirds of thehydrocarbons behind in a reservoir at the end of its economic life.Industry recognizes that recovery factors of 70 percent or even 80percent are technologically achievable. This goal is also becomingeconomically desirable – once all externalities related to the costof energy production are honestly reflected in the commodityprice. Moreover, increased research into the scientific foundationsof CO2-EOR (and other IOR methods) will gradually reducetechnology costs for this industry.

The most promising technology for enhanced oil recovery on aglobal basis, I believe, is the use of CO2 injected deep enough inthe oil fields to achieve pressures sufficient for miscibility between

CO2 and oil. There are many other EOR technologies in existence,but CO2 has the unique advantage that curtailing its emissionsinto the atmosphere is a goal in itself. Ironically, in spite of this,further growth of the CO2-EOR industry in the U.S. today iscurtailed by the lack of CO2! This is because the current industrialsources for CO2 are underground natural reservoirs where CO2 isseparated from natural gas (methane) during the productionprocess. In contrast, much larger quantities of CO2 are releaseddirectly into the atmosphere from coal-burning power plants,other industries and automobiles. As an example, in Wyoming – aleading U.S. energy producing state – the production of CO2 fromthe large natural gas field at LaBarge is about 10 million tons peryear, whereas the release from the coal-burning power plantswithin the state amount to about 90 million tons per year. The 10million tons of natural CO2 are fully used for EOR operationswithin the Rocky Mountains fields listed earlier, whereas the 80million tons of anthropogenic CO2 are wasted. To furtheremphasize this irony, the map in Fig. 3 shows how the existingCO2 pipelines in the central Rocky Mountain region run veryclose to several of the region’s largest power plants. The currentcost of separation of pure CO2 from power plant flue gas and thecost of compression for deep subsurface injection are the primaryfactors holding back the use of anthropogenic CO2 for EOR.

Several analyses of global trends in the use of primary energysources conclude that coal will remain a major resource. We willcontinue to burn it, but hopefully in cleaner ways than in thepast, such as through the use of integrated gasification combinedcycle (IGCC)power plants.Huge and rapidlydevelopingeconomies, such asthose of India andChina, arepresentlyincreasing theirenergyconsumption atrates of nearly 10percent per year.They view thesituation as havingno choice but tocontinueexploiting theirdomestic sources ofcoal because ofboth economic andsecurity reasons. For the first time in School history, both the Colorado School ofMines men’s and women’s basketball teams qualified for thepostseason Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC)tournament in the same season. Despite losses in the openingrounds from both teams, there were several reasons for both teamsto be proud of their performances this season.

The women’s squad, led by second-year Head Coach PaulaKrueger, recorded the best season in School history as she led theteam to a School-record 19 wins against nine losses. In addition, theteam posted the third best record in the RMAC (13-6) and the 13wins were the most conference wins in School history. And this wasdespite a staggering amount of injuries to her squad that forced allfour seniors on the team to average more than 30 minutes per game.

After starting the season 1-2, the Orediggers ran off a School-record nine straight wins, including an overtime triumph overnationally ranked Minnesota Duluth in December.

With a 14-7 record on Feb. 5 following a loss to Nebraska-Kearney, the Orediggers went 5-1 over their last six games, including

wins over regionally ranked foes Metro State and Regis on the road,to earn the No. 5 seed in the RMAC/Wells Fargo Shootout.

The Orediggers traveled to fourth-seeded Fort Hays State in thefirst round and trailed by four points at halftime (31-27) and tiedthe game at 37-37 with 15 minutes to play. However, the Tigers wenton a big run and ended CSM’s season.

Junior center Ashley Gronewoller was a First Team All-RMACEast Division selection, while senior forward Kristin Horkey andsenior guard Kim Kilmer were both Honorable Mention All-EastDivision picks.

The men’s team, guided by fourth-year Head Coach Pryor Orser,stood at 11-4 overall heading into the rugged RMAC East Divisionpart of their schedule. Two of the losses were to NCAA Division IITournament qualifiers Nebraska-Omaha and South Dakota. In theovertime loss to South Dakota, senior guard Stephen Bahl scored acareer-high 50 points, including 45 after the first half.

The Orediggers opened the East Division portion of its schedulewith a win over Regis and the following night, the squad posted a74-71 upset of then No. 1-ranked Metro State in Volk Gymnasiumbehind 24 points, eight rebounds and seven assists.

Injuries and illness hampered the Orediggers down the stretch asthey finished with a 16-11 record (10-9 RMAC) to earn the seventhseed in the RMAC/Wells Fargo Shootout. That meant Mines had to travel to second-seeded and nationally ranked Fort Lewis in thefirst round.

CSM fell behind 37-12 at halftime and could not rebound as theSkyhawks ended their season.

Bahl wound up his career by being named to the All-RMAC FirstTeam, All-RMAC East Division First Team and was the

DAKTRONICS North CentralRegion Player of the Year and a FirstTeam All-Region selection. He iseligible for All-American honors,but the selections were not availableat the time of printing.

He also became just the thirdplayer in CSM men’s basketballhistory to notch 2,000 career pointsin a Feb. 12 win over Chadron Statein Volk Gym. He finished his careerthird on the all-time scoring list atMines with 2,067 points.

Junior guard Kevin Wagstaff was aSecond Team All-RMAC EastDivision pick, while senior forwardFarris Broussard was an HonorableMention All-RMAC East Divisionhonoree.

Stephen Bahl was named the NorthCentral Region Player of the Year.

Track Athletes Earn Six All-American Honors

The men’s and women’s indoor track and field teamswere in action at the 2005 NCAA Division II Indoor Trackand Field National Championships March 11-12 inBoston. The men’s squad placed 25th overall, while thewomen’s team was 23rd.

On the women’s side, junior Heather Beresford finishedsecond in the mile run with a time of 4:50.60, less thanone second behind the champion.

In addition, the women’s distance medley team placed10th in a time of 12:13.39, two spots out of All-Americanstatus.

For the men, senior Jared Peacock finished sixth in the 800-meter run in 1:53.00 to earn All-American accolades.Peacock also helped the distance medley team to All-American honors with a sixth place showing in10:00.69. Other team members included sophomoresLarry McDaris and Joel Hamilton and junior Ross Wagle.

Kummer Shines at Swimming National Championships

CSM juniorTravis Kummerearned four All-Americanhonors at the 2005 NCAADivision IINationalSwimming and DivingChampionshipsMarch 9-12 at theYMCA AquaticCenter inOrlando, Fla.Kummer’s fourAll-Americanswims helped Mines to a 20th place team finish.

Kummer began his run by placing seventh in the 200individual medley at Wednesday’s finals in 1:53.47.Thursday, Kummer placed 15th in the 100 butterfly(50.63) and posted a sixth-place showing in the 100breaststroke in the finals (56.97) on Friday. Kummerrounded out his run Saturday night with a seventh-placeshowing in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:04.47.

Head Coach Dave Hughes has now coached 22 All-American performances during his four years at the helm.

Two Wrestlers Earn All-American Accolades

Five wrestlers competed at the 2005 NCAADivision II Wrestling National Championshipson March 11-12 and two grapplers earned All-American honors for their performances. Thetwo All-American performances helped Minesfinish 19th overall as a team with 17 points.

Senior 165-pounder Peter Jenson led the wayas he earned All-American status for the firsttime in his career with a fifth-place showing.He went 4-2 with one fall during thechampionships.

In addition, junior heavyweight DerekThompson picked up All-American honors forthe second straight year by placing eighth inhis weight class with a record of 2-3 with onefall on the weekend.

Jenson and Thompson were the fifth andsixth All-Americans coached by third-yearHead Coach Steve Kimpel.

Freshman 184-pounder Dillon Blackmonjust missed qualifying for the All-Americanrounds as he went 1-2 at the tournament. Awin in his final elimination match would haveguaranteed him All-American status.

Sophomore 133-pounder Garrett Eller andsenior 197-pounder D.C. Hazen each qualifiedfor nationals and both went 0-2 at thechampionships.

Evans Recalls 60 Years of Service to Mines By David Rein

Hugh Evans EM ’49 traces his interest inmining to his days as a young boy whenthe Evans family would vacation in GrassValley, Calif., on the North Star Mining

property. Those summer monthsstimulated a lifelong fascination withmining, and an interest in devoting hiscareer to the field.

This interest ultimately developed into a60-year relationship with Colorado Schoolof Mines. Evans was a student in the 1940s,then a benefactor, Board of Trusteesmember, Alumni Association boardmember and recipient of Mines’Distinguished Achievement Medal (1979).He came full circle as a student when hebriefly held the position as Mines’ oldestdoctoral candidate.

Evans’ eight years of Board serviceconcluded April 1. As President John U.Trefny stated, “Mines has been extremely

fortunate to have had the guidance ofHugh Evans for the better part of the lastdecade. His knowledge of the School andthe resources industries, and his

commitment to thepossibilities the future holdsfor Mines have beentremendous assets to ourcampus and its students.”

Ironically, Evans’ long-termrelationship with Minesalmost never happened. Hefirst planned to attend MITor Cal Tech, but then, as herelates, “Uncle Sam invitedme to join the armed forcesin World War II.” Evans’college aspirations were puton hold while he served inthe 10th Mountain Division,the only division-strengthAmerican military unittrained specifically formountain and cold weatherwarfare. This unit sufferedheavy losses during its 114days of combat, but wasresponsible for crippling ordestroying nine enemydivisions. Evans’ combatrecord shows he earned theSilver Star, a Purple Heartand the CombatInfantryman’s Badge.

This military service brought Evans toColorado and into contact with CSM. The10th Mountain Division trained at CampHale, Colo. While stationed there, Evansbecame convinced that Mines was theplace for him. “I learned that this schoolwas much more practical from a miningstandpoint than MIT or Cal Tech. I wasmore of a down-to-earth type engineer asopposed to an esoteric scientist. And I wasnot disappointed. I got an excellenteducation that enabled me to pursue acareer in mining.”

He fondly recalls that one of the practicallessons he drew from his “excellent” Mineseducation was that the tools of the tradecould be used for “multiple purposes.”During Evans’ sophomore year he workedas a night security officer at the local

reformatory for boys. He would be lockedin at 7 at night and let out at 7 a.m.,“which was very conducive to studying.”During his tenure at the reformatory, “Ilearned that my rock-testing kit could alsobe used to saw the locks off of doors.”Hugh had loaned his kit for rockidentification to the kids to play with. Theymanaged to file their way through thereformatory’s padlocks. Evans and his co-workers spent hours driving across thefields of Golden in Buttercup, a used 1937Chevy sedan that he had knocked the topoff of, searching for his runaway charges.

On a more serious note, Hugh alsoremembers some of the more importantmatters he learned at the School as astudent, varsity wrestler and foundingleader of the Glee Club. He gained valuablelessons in getting along with his peersunder difficult circumstances, particularlyin the “unique exercise” that was minesurveying.

Evans leaves the Board with a dream forMines’ future. He states, “The School hasall the various elements in place to be thecenter for mining and sustainabledevelopment worldwide. We have excellentdepartments dealing with the social,economic, cultural, business and politicalaspects of this industry. We have very gooddepartments dealing with environmentalissues – chemical and water pollution andother issues associated with the industry.The School is taking a lead in research intorenewable energy. And we promote ahands-on, practical approach to basicindustries.”

These interrelated programs, Evans argues,enable Mines to turn out graduates thathave the tools and understanding to makesound decisions, the kind of decisionsneeded for miners to work for the mutualbenefit of industry and the communities inwhich mining interests operate.

Evans provides an analogy. Years ago heworked on a Navajo reservation where theprevailing custom when a man died was toknock a hole in the south wall of hishogan, remove the body through theopening and then abandon the dwelling,leaving it as a place for the man’s soul to

reside. Since hogans were traditionallymade of log and mud, the Navajo did notconsider them permanent livingstructures. At the time, a well-intentionedhome construction program for the

Navajo was enacted by the U.S.government. The program, which soughtto establish durable, long-term housing,ran counter to cultural norms andconsequently met with limited success.

Relating this experience to mining, Evansargues, “That’s where Mines is soimportant. Our students understand thatefforts to develop a mining property haveto be worked out in cooperation withindustries and the people who are wherethe ore is.”

Evans also sees that major challengesconfront Mines in the years ahead.Colorado, he posits, is the least supportivefinancially of higher education of any ofthe 50 states. TABOR and Amendment 23are combining to drastically diminish staterevenues for higher education.

“Dr. Trefny and the Board,” Evans says,“have done all they can to reduce costsand be more efficient and fortunately wedo have, have had, and will continue tohave strong support from alumni andothers. But we’re at the point now where we are no longer cutting fat butcutting bone.”

Hugh and his wife of 55 years, Ann, havebeen extraordinarily generous to Minesover the years. They have been members ofthe Mines Century Society at the Silverlevel since the Society’s inception in 1996,

and because oftheir leadershipsupport for theTransformingResourcescampaign, they willbe recognized atthe Gold level thisfall. Yet, Evansmodestly shrugs offcomplimentsregarding hissupport of theSchool. “My ‘gifts’to the school areactuallyinvestments. Icontribute to theschool through acharitable

remainder trust. This is a soundinvestment. My wife and I get incomefrom these gifts. The remainder then goesto the School when we pass on. It’s a win-win situation, supporting the School andat the same time providing security formyself and my wife in our elderly years. Ihave found out that this is a very usefultool for me and for the school and I wouldstrongly encourage others to look into it.”

Despite his history of service to both hiscountry and his alma mater, Evans objectsto special commendation. He says, “I knowour generation has been tagged as theGreatest Generation. That’s probablysuspect. We’re pretty much the same asother generations. Looking back, we seemto have reacted reasonably well to extremecircumstances.”

“I’m pretty optimistic about the youngpeople I see and what they’re doing andwhat they’re trying to do. They have verydifferent problems. So many things arebeing dumped on them. I think they havetremendous challenges from overload. But,I see young people struggling with theseissues and trying to give back to society.”

One cold day in March 2004, the secure phonerang in the Fort Bragg, N.C., headquarters of the27th Engineer Battalion (Combat) (Airborne). The voice on theother end outlined a mission: rapidly deploy by air with a tailoredbattalion engineer mission force to construct a forward operatingsite in a remote area of Afghanistan near the Pakistan border. “Canyou do it?” asked the joint task force liaison officer. The sitecapabilities were to include an airfield with the ability to put fiveC17s on the ground simultaneously, accommodate 14 rotary wingaircraft including a matted taxiway, an 80,000-gallon refuelingpoint, and a 500-man base camp. “By the way,” the liaison officerinjected, “this is a non-permissive environment; the road networkis virtually non-existent, you must have a short take-off andlanding capable airstrip in 72 hours, and your mission force mustsecure itself.”

“Sounds like a challenge,”retorted the commandgroup. “Why the TigerBattalion?” The liaison officeranswered, “The only way toget the engineer equipment

in there is by parachute.” “As our motto says, ‘We do all thingswell’,” replied the command group. “When do we leave?” So beganthe short-fuse planning to establish Forward Operating Site (FOS)Carlson in southeastern Afghanistan in an austere, high-altituderegion. This was expeditionary engineering at its best.

The largest heavy drop of engineer equipment since World War IIoccurred April 25, 2004, from five C17 aircraft. Because of goodplanning by all involved, all platforms landed safely. Following thedrop, de-rig teams swarmed to the infrared-marked platforms andexpertly removed parachutes, lashings and rigging. Forty-twohours after the last platform was de-rigged, an Air Force plane

landed on a newly constructed assault landing zone, a credit to thedetailed planning, preparation and execution of the initial entryforce. FOS Carlson was beginning to take shape.

The decisive operation was the expansion of the runway toC130/C17 capability. The technicians and surveyors stayed 24 to48 hours ahead of the construction crews to finalize site layout ofthe landing zone, taxiways and base camp. As the landing zone wasbeing expanded, the light equipment platoons encounterednumerous obstacles that had not been apparent in the initialreconnaissance reports. No water was available within 10kilometers and the extremely large rocks in the silt/sand materialmade soil strength readings difficult. Although the airstrip wasconstructed without water, achieving the required C130 and C17soil strength and surface functionality would require more than35,000 gallons of water per day. Reconnaissance of an area threekilometers south of FOS Carlson yielded a potential water sourcein a wadi under a lime rock outcropping. After digging down sixfeet, water pooled allowing a water distributor to upload anddeliver water to the construction site. The cycle time was one hourper 2,500 gallons, requiring the distributor to run continuously. Amounted security force protected the route and upload site for thefirst 30 construction days.

Because of the large rocks that were two to six feet below thesurface, dynamic cone pentrometer (DCP) readings used todetermine the soil-bearing capacity became a concern. TheEngineer Technical Letter, published jointly by the Army and AirForce, defines construction standards that include dimensionaland soil-strength requirements. High, potentially inaccurate DCPreadings were a concern because it was believed that the strengthof the soil between the large rocks might not support C130

loading. Although the engineering mission force was experiencedand deemed the runway ready for use, they decided to consult withothers to make sure. Luckily, the battalion had brought along aportable video teleconference kit. The kit gives battlefield engineers the ability to seek engineering expertise in the UnitedStates through teleconferencing. The engineers in Afghanistanteleconferenced with engineers in Mississippi and Florida. Basedon the analyzed data, it was determined that the runway wassuitable for both C130 and C17 landings. The construction effortcontinued culminating with the assault landing of a C130 afterthree weeks on the ground. Where nothing stood before, there wasnow an operational C130 assault landing zone.

Critical sustainmentsupplies were supposedto arrive on locallycontracted trucksstarting by Day 3.Unfortunately, the firsttrucks did not arriveuntil Day 14. Theengineering mission

force coordinated for daily re-supply of critical water, fuel andfood using air assets. For over two weeks, soldiers were rationed sixbottles of water and one meal-ready-to-eat per day. Shaving andbathing were not an option. The battalion required daily re-supplyfrom a combination of C130 parachute deliveries, CH-47helicopters and air-land aircraft.

Finally, locally contracted truck loads of essential supplies startedarriving and continued through the remainder of the build-up.The Vertical Construction Platoon, initially acting as the

headquarters security force, began construction of the base camp.With the completion of 8-foot force protection berms, initialguard towers and bunkers, the battalion moved from foxholes toenvironmentally controlled Alaskan tents by Day 24 – a majorimprovement to force protection and quality of life, especiallysince the daily temperature reached 120 degrees F.

By Day 30, the Joint Task Force could project combat power froman expeditionary site across southeastern Afghanistan. FOSCarlson was now capable of landing C130 aircraft, parking 10rotary wing aircraft on a matted taxiway, fueling rotary wingaircraft from a 40,000-gallon refueling point and was growing tosustain an additional 300 personnel with quality-of-lifeenhancements.

After 120 days, FOS Carlson was built to the master plan standardand a C17 successfully landed. FOS Carlson consisted of a 7,300-foot runway, 5,200-foot taxiway, parking for five C17/C130 and 14helicopters and an 80,000-gallon refueling point. The base campcould house up to 500 soldiers in climate-controlled tents andprovide food, showers, laundry and morale support. The onlysupport center in the region, FOS Carlson gained the reputation as“the best little truck stop in Afghanistan.”

We had successfully shaped terrain to enhance the maneuver of theJoint Task Force. FOS Carlson enabled combat operations in thisremote region of Afghanistan at a time and place of the Joint TaskForce’s choosing. The success of this operation can be credited tothe warrior ethos of the airborne engineer soldiers, the versatileorganizational structure of a corps’ airborne engineer battalion,and our aggressive engagement in the area of operation. The futureexpeditionary engineer force? It’s here, it’s now and it works.

dogs and probes is a slow, tedious, often dangerous process.

Modroo’s research proved that GPR can find humans buriedbeneath snow, but the technology is still a long way from being

implemented for avalanche search andrescue operations. GPR units cost about$30,000 each and are designed forexploration. What is needed for searchand rescue is a system that could fit onthe skids of a rescue helicopter thatwould fly over avalanche sites. Designinga prototype could cost as much a $1million, says Modroo. He has presented

his research at two international conferences, but has no takers so far.

“If my research continues, we could develop software to interpretdata that could make GPR more user-friendly,” Modroo says. “It’sa technology I know will get implemented eventually, but it’sexpensive and there’s not much motivation to do it right now. ButI see it evolving.”

Justin Modroo BSc Geop ’01, MSc Geop ’04 combined his love ofskiing with academics when he earned a master’s degree at Mineslast year, proving once again that athletics and intelligence go welltogether. In 2004, Modroo was ranked 6th in the world in bigmountain free (more commonly known as “extreme”) skiing. Hehas skied competitively since he was in elementary school andnow that his studies are completed, he’s back on the circuit.

But before graduation last December, Modroo’s focus was onground penetrating radar (GPR) and its possible use for findingavalanche victims. GPR is commonly used to image the Earth’ssubsurface to find electrical wires or to detect water tables.Modroo’s research proved it can also be used to detect bodiesbeneath snow. “Snow and ice make a great medium for using

GPR,” says Modroo, “The contrast between electrical conductivityin snow and for humans is great.” Modroo proved the ability ofGPR to locate bodies by burying a dead pig and beaming radar atit. He discovered that a single GPR antenna wired to a laptopcould distinguish the pig from snow, backpacks, logs, even dirtclogs. The sooner an avalanche victim can be located, of course,the more likely the victim is to be found alive.

Currently, avalanche victims are searched for using rescue dogsand 8-foot probes. Some back-country skiers wear personalbeacons that emit a signal that can be pinpointed in case of anavalanche; however, use of the beacons is not widespread. Nobeacons were detected by rescuers in Utah in the massiveavalanches that occurred in January. Searching for victims with

Mines alumni in the medical profession – doctors,veterinarians, nurses, physical therapists, emergencymedical technicians and dentists – agree: Theirprescription for success includes the excellenteducation they received at Mines.

“An engineering degree is a good basis for medicaltraining because it teaches you how to think, how toproblem solve and how to look at a problem frommultiple angles,” says Erika Nelson-Wong BSc Phy ’92,a physical therapist. Engineering is the application ofbasic sciences, adds David Liu BSc Met & Mat Eng ’03,a medical student. “For me, it was studying thestructure and properties of materials. The same basicprinciple pertains to medicine; it is the application ofbasic sciences toward the treatment of human disease.”

Family physician Alfred Po-Hung Wu Geop E ’72compares electrophysiology, the study of the electricalproperties of the heart, with mapping the surface ofthe Earth while searching for oil. The mathematicalapproach is the same: mapping downward (or inward)based on surface data.

A Mines education provides more science andmathematical knowledge than a typical pre-medcourse, according to alumni. Wu says his degree madehim stand out from his peers when applying formedical school. A member of the medical schooladmissions committee later told Wu it was hisrecommendation from a mathematics professor thatmade him memorable.

“Engineering principles can be applied inall facets of life and medicine is just oneexample,” says Thomas Milner BSc Phy’81, MSc Phy ’86, who is a professor in the biomedical engineering department at

University of Texas at Austin.“Engineering forces you to thinkanalytically and learn problem-solving approaches that can beapplied to a broad range ofdisciplines.” Timothy Judkins BScChem Eng ’01, a medical student,says engineering graduates also“provide diversity to medicine, whichis dominated by people with biologybackgrounds.”

Engineering and medicine have more in common thanone might think. “Both are very methodical and dealwith problem-solving,” notes David Graham BSc CPR’99, MSc Chem ’02, a student at Albany MedicalCollege. “Each has diagnoses and methods oftreatment. Both require a great deal of thought andexperience to succeed.” A doctor needs to be able tothink about a problem and create solutions.

Harry Temple Jr. PE ’69, a dentist who spent two yearsas a petroleum engineer before changing careers, alsosee similarities in the two careers. “I’m a dentist so I’mstill drilling, just on a smaller scale.” Temple is aprosthodontist, which, he says, “uses a bit ofengineering, strength of materials and a whole lot ofcommon sense.”

The study of the human body also can be compared tothe study of chemical engineering. The heart is thepump, the vasculature system the pipes, thescrubbers/filters are the kidney/lungs and the CPU

Toni Bowden BSc CPR ’95, a dentist in the U.S. Navy. “It wasthere that I was able to actually ‘see’ and experiment withthings like titration rates, effects of different mechanical forcesand especially Auto-Cad.”

“Engineering is such a versatile field,” says Bowden. “Learningdynamics, statics and physics are just a few of the basics of howthe human body functions.” Bowden sees a lot of similaritybetween engineering and dentistry. “For instance, whendetermining the type of dental restorative to use in a tooth, Ihave to consider the mechanical, electrical and thermalproperties of the material and how it may be affected by theperson’s chewing habits (or biting forces) and saliva,” she says.“Also, from a physiological standpoint, the human jaw works

like a hinge – a class III lever system – so understanding thefulcrum and load is always important when trying to diagnosepatient discomfort.”

Few of the Mines alumni now in the medical fields expected tofollow the path they eventually took. Michael Taravella BScChem ’77, an eye surgeon, planned to become an engineer, butchanged to medicine because he wanted more contact withpeople. Erika Nelson-Wong chose physical therapy also for thepeople contact. Gregory Meyer PRE ’58, a psychiatrist, was anaeronautical engineer for eight years before deciding he neededa new challenge. Mikki Hand went to medical school afterdiscovering a shortage of women physicians in Alaska, whereshe was a petroleum engineer.

“Engineering is good for pretty much anycareer simply because you learn to problemsolve whatever the problem may be,” saysDaniel Matlock BSc CPR ’99, a doctor ofinternal medicine.

“Both professions [engineering andmedicine] exist to improve the humancondition, adds Blackwell, “either improvingour quality of life as a consumer of theengineered product or as a patient seeking a

cure for theirdisease.”

“I have nothingbut great thingsto say aboutMines and myeducationthere,” saysMikki Hand.“Engineeringschool wasmuch moredifficult andchallengingthan medical

school.” Scott Pauls BSc CPR ’81, anemergency room doctor agrees.“Academically, engineering was more difficultthan medical school.”

[central processing unit] is the brain. “Each has intrinsicfactors similar to their engineering counterparts, such asresistance, pressure and flow properties,” David Graham says.“Both employ great technologies that must be understood andapplied. A foundation is needed in order to fully appreciate thecomplexities of man and the tools used to heal him/her. Thebody is an engineering masterpiece; as such, medicine is theapplication of engineering principles in orderto provide symptomatic relief in some form.”

Daniel Johnson BSc Geop ’85, an internistwith subspecialty inhospice and palliativemedicine, advises studentscontemplating medicalcareers to “broaden theway in which you approachmedicine – far beyond ascientific endeavor. Learnas much as you can aboutpeople, their passions,culture and diversity.”

Geology is also like medicine, notes Mikyong“Mikki” Hand BSc Pet ’91, MSc Engr Sys ’97,a family physician, “in that it comprisesmemorizing lots of structures and thenputting them together into a system andtrying to make inferences about how/why asystem is the way it is.” She compares thenatural log decline that describes drugclearance from the body as being the sameconcept that describes the basic decline inproduction from oil reservoirs.

“I think the heart of any good education isteaching a student to be an adult learner andMines does that very well,” says JohnBlackwell BSc Eng ’91, a doctor whospecializes in interventional radiology.“Recognizing what you do not know,subsequently learning that information andapplying the knowledge responsibly are thekeys to succeeding in both engineering and medicine.”

Peter Stout MSc Env Sci ’94, a forensic toxicologist, says thepharmaceuticals field includes a lot of chemical engineering inboth production and molecular modeling. But he says that“not enough young doctors have a clue about chemistry. Andmost toxicologists don’t have a good grounding in differentialequations or statistics.” At Mines, Stout was required to takemore math than he would otherwise have chosen. “But I don’tthink you can ever have too good a grounding in math andchemistry.” Paramedic Andy Jensen BSc Eng ’98 agrees thatwhat he learned in math classes at Mines makes the medicalcalculations required for his job easy for him.

“One of the most significant ways Mines prepared me wasthrough the numerous hands-on lab courses,” says

20Donald E. Miller Met E ’53 is this year’s recipient of the MelvilleF. Coolbaugh Award, which is given to a person who has made anoutstanding contribution toward improvingthe image and enhancing the reputation ofCSM. Miller retired as vice chairman of TheGates Corporation after 35 years with thecompany. His involvement with Mines hasbeen continuous and includes service on theBoard of Trustees from 1987 to 1997, three ofthose years as president. He also has served onthe CSM Foundation Board of Directors since 1988 and waspresident from 1994 through 1998. In addition, he and his wife,Barbara, have provided scholarship endowments. In 1985, hereceived CSM’s Distinguished Achievement Medal.

The Outstanding Alumnus Award was given to Robert“Bob” Pearson PE ’59. Pearson was a coach at Mines throughouthis career until he retired in 1998. The highlight, he says, was as

soccer coach. In his last five years, his teamwon four conference championships. Eventoday, Pearson never misses an opportunityto promote athletics at the School. Pearsonhas served on the Alumni Association Boardof Directors and the CSM Credit UnionBoard of Directors and currently is sectionsmanager for the Association, organizing and

attending section events throughout the country. Pearson is amember of the Athletics Hall of Fame, a Mines Medalist and anhonorary member of the Association.

Karen (Manski) Maestas BSc Geol ’91 is this year’sYoung Alumnae Award winner. She is a project manager, teamleader, and quality assurance manager for URS Corporation’senvironmental division in Denver. She was one of URS’ firstcertified project managers and manages projects in the UnitedStates and Japan for commercial and U.S. Air Force clients. For

many years, Maestas also served as a campusrecruiter for Radian International/URS atCSM. She was so successful at placing Minesgraduates at the company that the twoenvironmental engineering teams nowconsist of nearly 50 percent Mines graduatesincluding both team leaders. Maestas is amember of the Colorado Hazardous Waste

Management Society and the Society of Military Engineers. Sheserved as newsletter editor for the Metro Denver Association forWomen Geoscientists for several years.

Honorary Memberships in the Alumni Association wereawarded this year to Jerry Marshall, Frank A. Hadsell DSc Geop’61 and Robert “Bob” Stitt. Additionally, the CSMAA Board ofDirectors voted in February to grant Honorary Memberships toHonorary Degree recipients when they are not already alumni.William J Barrett, Honorary Degree recipient for December 2004(see Mines Winter 2005), and Charles Vest and George

Tchobanoglous, the May 2005 Honorary Degree recipients,have been given Honorary Memberships by the Association (seemore in next issue of Mines).

Jerry Marshall attended Mines in the mid 1950s,although he did not graduate. He left school and began a career atCF&I Steel Company, rising through the ranks until he retired in1999 as manager of sales. He sold drilling and mining suppliesand thus kept in contact with Miners throughout the world. Inthe 1960s, Marshall was an associate member of the AlumniAssociation in the Midland, Texas, area and was heavily involvedin promoting the School, including helping to recruit severalathletes. Throughout the years, Marshall secured summer jobs forMines students and helped place CSM graduates in the steelindustry. Since retirement, Marshall has actively worked with theCSM Athletic Department to recruit student-athletes and enthusi-astically supports CSM’s athletic activities.

Frank Hadsell, CSM geophysics professor emeritus,launched hundreds, if not thousands, of young students into

productive, fulfilling careers in Earthsciences and mineral engineering. Hadsell,raised on a Wyoming sheep ranch, ran into aMines professor, Ralph Homer, whileherding sheep one day and talked to him foran hour or so about geology and physics. Hebecame more interested as time passed,leading to his eventual career as a geophysics

professor. Hadsell has written two books on geophysics and, withanother CSM professor, helped the School increase itsinvolvement in seismic studies. Hadsell also helped found thefaculty senate and faculty club. He is a long-time member of theAlumni Association and served on the history committee thatresulted in publication of Rocky Mountains to the World: A Historyof the Colorado School of Mines.

Bob Stitt is CSM’s head football coach, now in his sixthyear. Last season, Stitt led the squad to the best season in School

history as the team won its first RockyMountain Athletic Conference title since1958. In addition, the team posted a perfect11-0 mark in the regular season andadvanced to the NCAA Division II Playoffsfor the first time in program history. Stitt’swinning percentage is the highest by a Minesfootball coach who has coached in at least 20

games and the highest for a modern-day coach at CSM. Therecord-setting season helped Stitt be honored as the RMAC Coachof the Year, as well as the Division II American Football CoachesAssociation Regional Coach of the Year in Region 5 and thed2football.com Southwest Regional Coach of the Year. Stitt alsowas instrumental in helping senior quarterback Chad Friehaufwin the 19th Annual Harlon Hill Trophy as the top player inDivision II, the first player from Mines and the RMAC to win the award.

ERLING “SWEDE”ARNSTON PRE ’52died peacefully athome Jan. 29 at age79. Quick with asmile andcomfortable with

conversation, Arnston had the qualities of aman who enjoyed life. He enjoyed readingand sharing poetry or a good story, andwas always the first to figure out aninnovative way to “fix” something. His dayswere filled with gardening, carving woodenducks, fly fishing, a good joke and theoccasional outing in his ’59 MGA. Beforeattending Mines, Arnston served as acombat infantryman in the Pacific duringWorld War II. At Mines, he was a memberof Sigma Phi Epsilon. In 1951, he marriedBernie Kaltenbach. During their 54 yearstogether, they raised two sons and adaughter. Both sons, Stace BSc Min ’76 andDavid, also attended Mines. In 1987,Arnston retired from a career with AmocoOil and moved to Grand Junction, Colo. Itwas there that he became active in the localRotary club, participating in communityactivities and organizing its annualChristmas bell-ringing activities. Swede’slove of life was recognized throughout hislifetime and he received many honors anddistinctions including the Victory Medal,Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, GoodConduct Medal, the Loyal Alumnus Awardfrom the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, andthe Paul Harris Fellow Award from hisfellow Rotarians.

ALAN BAKEWELL EM ’38died Nov. 2 at home. Hewas 89. Bakewell wasborn in Illinois and methis future bride in gradeschool. Before graduatingfrom Mines, Bakewellworked as a laborer forCaliente CyanidingCompany in Nevada.After graduation, heworked for Kennecott inChile to earn enoughmoney to marry Betty Bates. For theirhoneymoon, he took her to Nevada where

he worked as a pit engineer for StandardCyaniding. He then worked for Kennecottand he did both underground and open pitwork. In 1954, the family moved to thePhilippines where Bakewell was generalmanager for Baguio Gold. In 1959, thefamily moved to a nickel mine in Cuba fora year. Next was Cypress for the next 15years. The Bakewells returned to the Statesin 1976 and moved to Reno, Nev., in theearly ’80s where Alan finished his careerwith Cyprus Amoco by opening theNorthumberland heap leach facility. Firstand above all, Bakewell was a family manand “family” extended to friends from themining camps around the world where hehad lived. After retirement, Bakewell tookon house ownership and gardening withhis usual enthusiasm. His main recreationwas golf and he played with some skill foralmost 80 years. In all ways, Bakewell lovedbeing active and moving things towardcompletion. His motto was “What can I doto help?” He is survived by his wife of 64years, two sons and two granddaughters.

ARTHUR D. BERTANZETTI PHD MATH ’94of Littleton, Colo., died Oct. 27 at age 55.In addition to his Mines degree, he held aBE and master’s degrees from YoungstownState University. Bertanzetti retired fromCoors after 20 years of employment and atthe time of his death, was employed by theU.S. Department of Homeland Security. Heis survived by his wife of 32 years, Vickey,two sons, a granddaughter and a brother.

ANTON W. BOSCH EM ’70 of Cheyenne,Wyo., died Dec. 31 at age 68. Bosch was amining and environmental engineer andserved in the U.S. Air Force. He was amember of American Legion Post 5 andthe CSMAA. Born in The Netherlands, hebecame a U.S. citizen in 1963 while servingat F.E. Warren Air Force Base. Bosch wasmultilingual, speaking English, Dutch andGerman. In 1971, he married Lillian “Lee”Vincent. Bosch is survived by his widow,three sons, a daughter, a sister and twograndchildren.

MICHAEL R. “MICK” COLLINGS GEOL E ’59died June 12, two days shy of his 69th

birthday. Collings was born in Monroe,Utah, and moved with his family toWashington at the age of 7. He grew up on

the Kitsap Peninsulaand spent manyafternoons deliveringnewspapers on hisbicycle, often carryinglittle sister Nora on thehandlebars. He was alsoclose to his brother,

David, hunting and playing on the family’s11 acres near Bremerton. After graduatingfrom Mines, Collings became a hydrologistfor the U.S. Geological Survey, travelingthroughout the country. His work involveddetailed studies of area streams, water flowand the effect on area fish populations. Healso served in the Army Reserves until hisdischarge in 1967. Collings met his futurebride, Audrey June Ayer, in Colorado andthey married in 1961. After retiring fromthe USGS, Collings pursued his dream ofowning a ranch and raising cattle on a 140-acre ranch in Crawford, Colo. There, heand Audrey built their home and workedthe ranch through long hot summers andbitter cold winters. Collings enjoyed theoutdoors and was especially fond ofspending his free time carving andwoodworking. Survivors include hismother, sisters, two nephews, a niece, twograndnieces and a grandnephew. His wife,brother and father predeceased him.

WILLIAM J. “BILL” DOMORACKI MSC GEOP

’86 died July 25 from cancer. He was 45.Domoracki was a research assistantprofessor at University of South CarolinaEarth SciencesResources Institute(ESRI-USC). Inaddition to his Minesdegree, he held anundergraduate degreefrom State Universityof New York,Potsdam, and a PhDfrom Virginia Polytechnic Institute andState University. Domoracki joined ESRI-USC in 1995 with an extensive backgroundin reflection seismology and appliedgeophysics. He was responsible for seismic

reflection data processing and operation ofthe institute’s environmental geophysicslaboratory. Prior to joining ESRI-USC,Domoracki was at the Regional GeophysicsLaboratory at Virginia Tech where heresearched the processing and interpretationof deep crustal and shallow high-resolutionseismic reflection data. During his careerhe processed numerous P-wave, S-wave andVSP seismic surveys for crustal andenvironmental applications. He alsoacquired, processed and modeled numerousgravity and magnetic surveys. Domorackiwas a member of the Geological Society ofAmerica, Society of ExplorationGeophysicists, American Association ofPetroleum Geologists and EuropeanAssociation of Geoscientists and Engineers.

LLOYD E. ELKINS SR. PET E ’34 died Dec.17 at the age of 92. Elkins, a native ofGolden, Colo., was a member of Sigma PhiEpsilon, Tau Beta Pi, Sigma GammaEpsilon and Scabbard and Blade while atMines. He also played basketball. In 1948,he graduated from the Harvard School ofAdvanced BusinessManagement and in1963, received anhonorary doctorate inscience from Universityof the Ozarks. Elkinsjoined Stanolind Oil andGas (now BP), where heremained for 43 years.After retirement, he opened a privatepetroleum consulting office andsubsequently was chosen as a member ofthe prestigious Arbitration Board selectedto divide rights to massive oil properties inPrudhoe Bay, Alaska. Elkins was active inseveral professional societies and received many awards including CSM’sDistinguished Achievement Medal. He wasnamed to the Engineering Hall of Fame at Oklahoma State University and atUniversity of Tulsa. He was a prolific writerof technical papers and was a recognizedauthority in secondary and tertiaryrecovery of oil. Elkins also served aspresident and board member of Familyand Children’s Services for many years andwas one of the first Tulsa Library Hall of

Fame honorees. He was a founder of theTulsa Petroleum Club and a member ofTulsa Country County and Kiwanis Club.An active churchman, he served in elderand trustee positions. He was also an avidsupporter of CSM. Elkins is survived by hiswife of 70 years, Virginia, a daughter, a son,six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

GEORGE R. GOEBEL MSC PHY ’79 diedDec. 31 in Knoxville, Tenn. He was 58.Goebel spent more than 27 years in thenuclear industry. He provided consultingsupport to the Department of Energy inthe development, upgrade, oversight andtraining of various programs. He wasrecently recognized for his performance asa technical consultant on the DOE’snational HighlyEnriched UraniumVulnerability Study.He also served asproject manager forcriticality safety-related projects atseveral facilitiesincluding Paducah,Portsmouth and Lawrence LivermoreNational Laboratory. Goebel is survived byhis widow, Carol, a son, a sister and hismother.

EDWIN F. GORCYCA PRE ’50 died Dec. 15in Texas. He was 82. Following graduationfrom Mines, Gorcyca worked at MonsantoChemical Company for 30 years untilretirement in 1987. He also served in theU.S. Army during World War II in thePhilippines and Leyte Gulf. In 1947,Gorcyca married Sarah Lanz. In addition tohis Mines degree, he also holds a bachelorof science in chemistry from WoosterCollege. Gorcyca was an active member ofthe First Presbyterian Church of Texas City,the Boy Scouts of America, Troop 219 andToastmasters International. Gorcyca issurvived by his widow, two sons, twodaughters, a sister, nine grandchildren andtwo great-grandchildren.

GEOL ’50 died at his home in Grand

Junction, Colo., Nov. 7 at age 87.He had lived in Grand Junctionsince 1951. Morehouse was born inTribune, Kan., and spent his youth in Idaho and Washington. He married RuthCaton in 1942 inSeattle. Morehouseattended Universityof Washington andworked summersmining in Alaska toearn tuition. Hejoined the Armyand served as acaptain during World War II beforegraduating from Mines. Morehouse spentmost of his life working in the mineralindustry as an engineer, geologist andconsultant in several western states. He wasa member of the American Institute ofMining Engineers, the Geologic Societyand Professional Engineers. He also spent20 years ranching. George and Ruth spenttheir retirement years traveling to theirfavorite places in Alaska, Montana andalong the Oregon coast. In between travels,Morehouse enjoyed volunteering at theDinosaur Museum. His friends and familyremember George for loving the outdoors,whether hunting, prospecting, ridinghorses, hiking or fly-fishing. Morehouse issurvived by his wife of 62 years; a son, twodaughters, two sisters, two grandsons andtwo great-granddaughters.

ROBERT H. MUENCH MET E ’50 ofCarefree, Ariz., died Sept. 13 at age 79.Muench was born in Colorado and servedin the U.S. Army during World War II.Upon being honorably discharged, heattended Mines. After graduation he took a

position with theArabian-AmericanOil Company andmoved his family toSaudi Arabia for thenext 30 years.During this time,Muench and hisfamily enjoyed travel

abroad and he was able to experience someof the world’s best golf courses. An avidgolfer, Muench also loved to read, play

LESTER BOSCO ROBERTS, a CSM student inthe 1920s, died June 14 in Columbus, Ohio.He was 97. Roberts valued his two years atMines, but necessity forced him to transferto the University of Wyoming, where hegraduated in 1928. After graduation, hebecame a petroleum engineer for the EthylCorporation. During his career, herepresented his company in Argentina,England, South and Central Americas andthe West Indies. He also served in the U.S.Army during World War II. While at EthylLabs, he worked on the team thatstatistically proved cigarette smokingcaused lung cancer. He also researched theadverse effect on humans of tetraethyladditives in leaded gasoline, which lead tothe additives being removed from gasoline.After retirement, Roberts married IolaSheppard and they moved to Dublin, Ohio,where he taught at Ohio State. His nephew,John C. Stoddard EM ’52 says, “My unclewas a role model difficult to surpass. Hedelighted in my choosing CSM tomatriculate and was pleased at mygraduation. He always looked forward to

my sharing copies ofthe Mines magazine.”

ARTHUR H.SCUDAMORE PET E’37, a retiredchemical engineer,died Nov. 10 at theage of 90 in Texas.

CHARLES MORTON STRAIN PET E ’62 diedNov. 12 at age 64. Strain was born andraised in La Junta, Colo., where he was anEagle Scout and member of the KoshareIndians. After graduation, he worked as a petroleum engineer in the RockyMountain region before earning an MBAfrom Harvard School of BusinessAdministration. Strain then worked forExxon subsidiaries for six years, primarily

in Venezuela, before moving to Houston in1972. There he was an energy analyst forseveral regional brokerage firms. In 1991 heformed his own company to provideresearch and investment banking servicesfor small public oil and gas companies.Strain was a certified financial adviser, amember of The Institute of CharteredFinancial Analysts, the Society ofPetroleum Engineers, Houston EnergyFinance Group and Houston ProducersForum. He was also a member of MemorialDrive United Methodist Church. Strain wasa loving husband, father and grandfatherwho always made family a priority. He issurvived by his wife of 43 years, Ruth, twosons, a daughter and five grandchildren.

FRANK W. TODD EM ’41 of Denver diedJan. 4 at age 87. Todd began his collegecareer at University of California at

Berkeley where hewas a member ofPhi Delta Theta. Hethen moved toColorado to attendMines and was anoutstanding track-

and-field athlete. After graduation, Toddworked as a mining and mechanicalengineer and was employed by AdolphCoors Company for 25 years. Todd issurvived by six children, 16 grandchildren,12 great-grandchildren and a brother. Hiswife of 60 years predeceased him.

ELLSWORTH B. WATSON MET E ’31 ofSanta Fe, N.M., died April 28, 2004, at age96. A Denver native, Watson graduatedfrom East High School before attendingMines. During hiscollege years, he was amember of Sigma PhiEpsilon, ROTC andwas editor of theProspector. Aftergraduation, he workedfor the Jones and Laughlin Steel Mills inAliquippa, Pa. During World War II,Watson served as first lieutenant in the 5thArmy, stationed in the Aleutian Islands.After the war, he worked for Mountain Bellfor 37 years, retiring in 1972. Watson was a

member of the Telephone Pioneers, wasactive in his church and the Braille Serviceof New Mexico. He was a 32nd degreeMason and a Shriner. Watson is survived bya son, a daughter and six grandchildren.

FREDERICK “FRITZ” WEIGAND PE ’39 diedpeacefully at home Dec. 27 surrounded byhis family. He was 92. Weigand grew up inColorado and entered CSM at age 21. AtCSM he played tuba in the band, became asecond lieutenant in ROTC and was editorof the Oredigger. He met his future wife,Virginia Miller, because her father ownedthe paper that published the Oredigger andthey married in 1939. After graduation,Weigand worked first as a laborer and thenas an engineer. He was called into service in1941. In 1942 he was hired by Stearns-

Roger and was anemployee for 40 years.During that time hesupervised thebuilding of powerplants in Montana,Kansas, Wyoming,North and SouthDakota, Texas andUtah. He also traveled

to Israel to consult on a nuclear powerplant. Weigand retired as assistant managerof the power division in 1982. He was alifelong supporter of CSM and a chartermember of the Mines President’s Council,among other things. He also belonged toseveral professional organizations and wasa member of the Kiwanis Club of Goldenfor more than 60 years. He served on theGolden board of planning and adjustment,was a deacon and elder during his 60+years as a member of the First PresbyterianChurch of Golden, and was past-presidentof the Ione Duck Club and Naylor LakeFishing Club. He was a Master Gardenerand a charter member of Rolling HillsCountry Club. In his leisure time, Fritzenjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing,rafting, traveling, building and repairprojects, flying, attending cultural eventsand enjoying his family. His wife precededhim in death. He is survived by a daughter,Jane Diggs, two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

business andindustryleaders, havejoined forcesto raise theresourcesneeded toensure thatthe School’sRecreationCenterbecomes areality.

committeemembers are all dedicated to improvingthe athletic program at Mines. They havedonated countless volunteer hours, madecontributions to specific team andprogram needs, and even establishedendowed athletic scholarships to supportthe academic pursuits of varsity teammembers. Most recently, McNeil andIsaacs have made financial commitmentsto the recreation center project: McNeilhas pledged $150,000 and Isaacs $150,000to help with construction. Mines willrecognize their gifts by naming rooms inthe recreation center in their honor. Anycontribution to the center of more than$50,000 will be similarly acknowledged.

“As a former football player at Mines,”Isaacs said, “I appreciate how importantthe opportunity to participate in sportsand recreation is to a student’s education.Athletic activities build confidence andmental and physical wellbeing. Therecreation center will offer students anunparalleled venue for these activities.”

“There are many benefits the School andthe Golden community will derive fromthe CSM recreation center,” added McNeil,who served as president of the studentbody for the 1970-71 academic year. “Forexample, the center will allow the Schoolto greatly expand its services to highschools throughout the state for athletictournaments and other events, exposingMines to an audience we otherwise wouldnot have attracted to campus.”

Recreation centers are increasinglyimportant features on campusesnationwide as today’s applicants evaluatethe overall campus experience – especiallysocial and recreational opportunities – inchoosing a school. A recent study of 700colleges and universities conducted by theNational Intramural-Recreational SportsAssociation indicated that nearly half ofthe schools were planning or currentlyinvolved in major recreation centerconstruction or improvement projects.The competition for top academic andathletic performers is intense and colleges are leveraging high-techrecreation facilities to attract the mostaccomplished candidates.

The new Mines recreation center willhouse a 2,500-seat competition arena, a25-meter swimming pool and aquaticsarea, a large recreational gymnasium, aclimbing wall, a cardiovascular and weightroom, an indoorjogging trackand ample spacefor students tosocialize.

Mines hasalready secured$20 million ofthe $25 millionneeded for theproject,including theland upon whichthe facility willbe situated. TheSchool iscounting on the generosity of its mostloyal friends and alumni – and thededication of committee members likeMcNeil and Isaacs – to raise the remainingfunds.

“A comprehensive program of athletics,recreation and fitness activities is integralto the Colorado School of Minesexperience,” said President John Trefny.“The entire Mines community is gratefulfor the recreation center committee’s giftsand efforts to appeal to their peers in the resources industry for additionalproject support.”
