There are moments when NCJW advocacy seems to be nothing more than a frustrating and futile experience. Such as when day-care licensing legislation is “gutted” to be politically palatable, but ineffective, in protecting

our young and vulnerable children. Or when legislation is approved to require photo IDs for voting, which disenfranchises significant numbers of elderly, students, minority or low-income voters. “These are the times that try [wo]men’s souls,” to paraphrase a founder of this great country, and it’s not unusual to wonder why we keep at this difficult endeavor, even though we still believe that our democratic system matters. It’s not always easy or even enjoyable to continue writing to and meeting with our elected legislators, either at the state or national level, who are fundamentally opposed to our positions. But we do this out of the commitment that these individuals need to know that not all their constituents agree with them.

2 NCJW Bulletin October–December 2012

L'Shana Tova and wishes for a sweet and healthy Jewish New Year. For me, the Jewish holidays are a perfect time to reflect on the past year and the year ahead, and to do some soul searching on

what is going to add meaning to my life. Of course, as president of NCJW – St. Louis Section, I think a lot about the programs and projects NCJW does in the community, and the events we offer our members for education and fun. My hope is that, if you are not involved, you will read this Bulletin to see how many opportunities there are at NCJW for you to become involved. And, if you are already active, I hope you will share your excitement and bring one new member into the organization this year.

To that end, let me share with you some of the fabulous events and programs that NCJW has to offer this fall. On October 11, the Election Education Series continues, featuring Governor Bob Holden, former governor of Missouri. Then, on November 8, the series will end with a recap of the general election with Jo Mannies, David Robertson and Jim Ross, which will be held at 7 p.m. at the Ethical Society. Both of these educational programs are sure to be stimulating.

The Membership department, under the direction on Membership VP Sherri Goldman has several things in store for us. Join NCJW on October 16 for a breakfast and docent tour at the Missouri History Museum of the exhibit Underneath It All, which depicts the changes in women’s undergarments from the Victorian Age to Victoria’s Secret. Thanks to chair Susan Witte for planning this fun membership event.

Ending October is a party that you will definitely want to attend. It’s our First Anniversary Celebration: Couturier through the Years. Hillary Friedman and Carolyn Satz are planning “A Walk through Time,” where you will see NCJW members model clothing worn throughout the decades, and a special one-night exhibit of

vintage garments from the 1920s from the collection of Birdie Rosen Schvey, thanks to the generosity of Patty and Henry Schvey.

Celebrating Women is always a special evening for NCJW. On Thursday, November 1, we will bestow the prestigious Hannah G. Solomon Award on two exceptional women-Karen Aroesty, Executive Director of the Anti-Defamation League and Meg Schnabel, Executive Director of Redevelopment Opportunities for Women. Nanci Bobrow, chair of Celebrating Women has planned a wonderful cocktail reception at Neiman Marcus.

Returning to summer, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention NCJW’s 12th annual Back-To-School! Store, which was held on July 22. Thank you BTSS chairs Andrea Newstead, Jenny Hoffman-Mentle, Amy Weiss, Courtney Mandel Swillinger, and Karen Silverman for making BTSS an incredible success. We served a record number of children this year – 1,100! With over 500 volunteers, BTSS can be proud of providing children with the necessities to go and stay in school. NCJW’s work in the schools continues through the Kids Community Closet program of BTSS, where our school liaisons have been busy stocking the closets to make sure students have all they need for the upcoming school year.

We ended the summer with our Shower for the Shelter, where NCJW members bought household items to furnish an apartment for the women of Lydia’s House, a provider of transitional housing for victims of domestic violence. Sharee Feldman and Sherri Goldman once again chaired this delightful event.

Lastly, I want you to know that Ellen Alper and I represented NCJW on September 6 at the Jewish Federation Annual Meeting. I am always so proud to speak on behalf of NCJW and tell people all we do. I feel confident that if you have attended or will attend any of the programs I mentioned, you too share that pride.

DEcISIoN 2012NCJW wants YOU to make sure your voice is heard in our democratic process in the upcoming national general election on November 6. Important dates and deadlines:

The deadline for voter registration is October 10. If you (or a friend or family member) have recently moved, gotten married or had a change of name, you should make sure you are properly registered to vote in Missouri. For more information about voter registration, go to this link: http://www.sos.mo.gov/elections/goVoteMissouri/register.aspx.

If you (or a friend or family member) will be unable to vote in person on November 6, you can:

• Apply by mail or fax to vote absentee. The request is due by October 31. If you have voting-age children who are away at college, please encourage them to apply to vote absentee in Missouri:

• Vote in person at your local election authority until 5:00 pm on Monday, November 5:

For more voting information and absentee ballot documents, use this link: http://www.sos.mo.gov/elections/goVoteMissouri/howtovote.aspx#Absentee. Significant issues of concern to women are at stake in the upcoming legislative term: women’s reproductive access, Social Security, health care, voter ID laws, Title X family planning funding, domestic violence protections, Roe v. Wade, equal pay for women, and certainly many others. These are critical issues for our society. Make sure you, your friends and family members are registered to vote, and make sure to vote on November 6!voTErS’ gUIDE: ISSUES oN THE

bAlloTAs a 501(c)3 organization, NCJW cannot take positions on candidates. But we can share our perspective on ballot issues. NCJW urges the following:

8 Vote “NO” on Constitutional Amendment 3, which would change the current “Missouri Court Plan” for judge selection in Missouri. The “Missouri Court Plan” is currently a model for many other states, and provides important protections for an impartial and non-partisan selection process of judges.

8 Vote “NO” on Proposition E, which would limit the process to develop a state health exchange as part of the Affordable Care Act.

9 Vote “YES” on Proposition B, to increase the tobacco tax as a way to discourage smoking and provide additional funding to our schools.

For more information on the above issues and the NCJW perspective, please contact Ellen Alper, Executive Director at 314-993-5181. She’ll make sure you reach the right expert, depending upon the issue you need addressed.

Then, just when we’re at our lowest point, the NCJW office receives a call from Governor Nixon’s office to ask for NCJW’s perspective on our opposition to recent state legislation. It would allow employers to “opt out” of offering women’s reproductive healthcare options, including birth control, if they have “moral objections” to doing so. Our calls, emails, letters to the editor and A-List ads over the spring months did make a difference. And when the Governor announced on July 12th that he was vetoing this legislation, NCJW was over the top with excitement!

Successes are (sadly) few, but perhaps that makes them that much sweeter. As with the Lilly Ledbetter Equal Pay legislation, Hate Crimes legislation and the Affordable Care Act, these successes take time and (much) effort – including working with terrific coalition partners – but they are worthwhile! If you agree, please consider becoming more involved in NCJW advocacy. We’ll provide the helmets for when you’re ready to hit your head against the wall, but we’ll also be there to celebrate our rare victories together!

SAvE THE DATE: WASHINgToN INSTITUTE, mArcH 17-19, 2013Don’t miss NCJW’s premier tri-annual public policy event, Washington Institute, set for March 17 – 19 in our nation’s capital. NCJW members from

across the country will gather to enhance our knowledge of the issues and challenges

facing our country and our world through in-depth briefings by political leaders and policy experts.

WASHINgToN INSTITUTE fEATUrES:

• Motivating presenters and keynote speakers directly tied to our key issues

• Networking with like-minded activists around the country • Advocating on the Hill with our Missouri Congressional

Representatives and Senators

Our Section is sending a large delegation to Washington Institute, and we would love for you to be a part of it! Get energized and educated about public policy and advocacy, and connect with women from St. Louis and beyond. As a special consideration, we provide a subsidy on hotel and registration for members who can commit to becoming future Section leaders. Please contact Ellen Alper at [email protected] or Darien Arnstein at [email protected] to register or learn more.

HEAlINg HEArTS bANK ExpANDS The Healing Hearts Bank, our Microlending project for survivors of domestic violence, is expanding. After successfully working with Lydia’s House over the past year, we are opening our second

branch with Safe Connections, thanks to the generous support of NCJW member Nina Swartz. The branch is set to open in October.

Our banks provide small loans, up to $500, to women who are creating new lives for themselves after leaving a life of domestic abuse. Many of the women we work with are unable to borrow money from traditional sources, having had their credit intentionally ruined by their abuser, or have no credit at all because their abuser controlled all of the finances. Each bank is run by a group of volunteers from our partner agency and members of NCJW. While volunteering as “bankers,” the women learn about finances, spreadsheets and loan applications. They learn how to run a meeting and are empowered to help other women. It’s not just about the money, but about all the other skills the women gain by working with each other. With the help of NCJW volunteers, they decide how to use the funds and set up payment plans, interest rates and loan documents.

We are also reaching out to secure funding to open additional branches in the future, with each bank needing a minimum of $5,000 to start. Please contact Marissa Rosen ([email protected]) if you are interested in sponsoring a branch of the Healing Hearts Bank. To volunteer or learn more, please contact project chair Marilyn Ratkin ([email protected]) or Ellen Alper ([email protected]). You can also call the office, 314-993-5181.

AfTEr ElEcTIoN DAy…NCJW is committed to informing members on important ballot issues and positions as we move closer to the elections. Through our monthly Election Education series, we have had the privilege of gaining insight from tremendous speakers, including former Missouri Governor Bob Holden, columnist Eric Mink, Promote the Vote’s Denise Lieberman and County Assessor Jake Zimmerman.

The final program in the series, held in conjunction with Women’s Voices Raised for Social Justice and the National Women’s Political Caucus–St. Louis, will be held on Thursday, November 8 at 7:00 PM at the Ethical Society, 9001 Clayton Road in Richmond Heights. Panelists Jo Mannies, David Robertson and Jim Ross will provide an election wrap-up. The event is free of charge, however, an RSVP is appreciated by calling the office at 314-993-5181. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.; program begins at 7:00 p.m. We hope to see you there!

rAISE yoUr HAND for SIlENT WITNESSThe Silent Witness program is gearing up for Domestic Violence Awareness month in October with brand new statues. NCJW

is looking for two new co-chairs to help us reach as many people as possible with this incredibly powerful program. The chairs of the project work on promoting display of the statues in our community and making sure their stories are current. It doesn’t take a lot of time — just some creativity! If you are interested in becoming a co-chair, please contact Jennifer Bernstein at [email protected].

WIfE-WIDoW-WomAN: THrEE DEcADES of comforTFor over 36 years, NCJW has sponsored Wife-Widow-Woman, a support group for women who have lost their husbands. Helen Kornblum, MSW, and Sue Heller Marcus initiated the program, and later participants and NCJW members Jean Bloch and Mary Lou Steiner were recruited to serve as the first “volunteer leaders” alongside the professional counselors. Jean and Mary Lou volunteered for years to assist these support groups. Jean’s family recognized how much the group had helped her and has financially supported the program in her memory since she passed away in 1997.

Bobbi Ring began the Wife-Widow-Woman support groups in 2008. She recently offered these comments about her experience, first as a participant and then as a leader. "Success in the position of volunteer leader for the Wife-Widow-Woman program is measured by the participants in the program. I am very proud and enormously gratified when a woman going through the program

shares how much I am helping her through the difficult journey of being a widow. It will be 8 years in October when my husband of 42 years died. My sister who became a widow earlier convinced me to participate in the Wife-Widow-Woman grief support group. After protesting, I did, and I never regretted the experience, the friendships and the professional leadership. I was invited to be a volunteer several years ago and worked with three different and wonderful facilitators. I find myself reaching out to other widows and widowers in various stages of mourning, and attempting to share what I have learned and to continue to be a resource. I thank NCJW for this opportunity to be of service in this very important group and for providing this valuable program in our community."

HElp WomEN NAvIgATE loSS WITH WIfE-WIDoW-WomANAfter becoming a widow, Jean Stein Bloch chose to start fresh in St. Louis near her brother Nardie Stein, his wife Sally, and other relatives. Knowing the pain caused by grief, the Steins urged Jean to join NCJW’s Wife-Widow-Woman (WWW) program. The program yielded deep and enduring relationships, and Jean was motivated to serve as a volunteer leader in subsequent WWW groups. For many years, she helped many women facing the challenges of painful loss.

Jean Stein Bloch died of natural causes in 1997. In her memory, Nardie and Sally continue to honor their sister with significant annual support for this unique program. We thank the Steins on behalf of the hundreds of women in our community who have participated in WWW sessions in the past years. If you know someone who could benefit from this program, please encourage them to call Nancy Weigley, NCJW Program Director at 314-993-5181. Consider donating to the WWW fund online at ncjwstl.org or by calling Marissa Rosen, NCJW Development Director at 314-993-5181.

An array of possibilities exists with the National Council of Jewish Women – St. Louis Section for donors who are interested in naming opportunities. Naming a mezuzah or a room in our new building is a wonderful way to pay tribute to a loved one while supporting NCJW. There are only five mezuzot left to be named, all lovingly custom made for NCJW by local artist and member Diane Katzman. Honor a friend or family member, memorialize a loved one, or use your own name to show your support of NCJW!

Please consider dedicating a mezuzah for $1,000 for the following spaces:

The 2013-2016 Membership Directory is coming! To make this valuable tool available to our members, we need lots of help, from proofing the book to soliciting for corporate and individual

sponsors. Advertising in the Membership Directory includes long-term exposure (up to 3 years) to our entire membership at a relatively low price. Please consider adding your business card, company advertisement, or personal messages to make this popular and valuable vehicle a reality. Ads range from $50 for a business card size to $1000 for the back cover. Please call Nancy Weigley at 314-993-5181 or [email protected] for more information.

Remember, your 2012-2013 dues must be current in order to be listed in the directory. If you’ve had recent changes in your phone, email or address, please contact [email protected] with the correct information.
