Q: How long have you lived in Lake Travis area? July will be 6 years.Q: What brought you to the area and where did you live before?

We visited Austin 6 years ago and fell in love. We chose Lake Travis area for the hill country and the stellar reputation of the Lake Travis ISD. We moved from Virginia Beach, VA and couldn’t be happier.

Q: What do you like most about living in Lake Travis? We love the small community feel. We also love the convenience of shopping and dining.

Q: How/where did you meet? We met 9 years ago in Washington, DC, through a mutual friend. Our first date was a blind date where we went to Atlantic City for the weekend. It was either going to go extremely well or be a total disaster. It was amazing! We’ve been together ever since.

Q: What are some of your hobbies? I think we would

say just hanging as a family is our most favorite hobby. Lawrence spends a lot of time growing our business Pipe Hitters Union and I spend 3 days a week working in a local Emergency Room so family time is precious to us. And most definitely, CrossFit.

Q: Where do you work/what do you do for a living? Our company, Pipe Hitters Union (PHU) is a lifestyle apparel brand. My husband, along with a handful of other special operations professionals from across the various military branches founded the company almost 15 years ago. Over the years it has grown into an internationally recognized lifestyle brand and is often featured on television shows and in movies. Most recently, some PHU apparel was featured in the Michael Bay blockbuster hit, “13 Hours, the Secret Soldiers of

Benghazi”. We’re super excited to say that PHU apparel is now sold in more than 30 countries around the world.

Q: What is your favorite thing to do as a family? Getting away can be a challenge so we enjoy the regular staycation. Our boys really love the Great Wolf Lodge in Grapevine, the JW Marriott in San Antonio and our own Lakeway Resort and Spa.

Q: What is one of your favorite family memories? Most definitely the moment we met, our engagement and wedding day, but our absolute favorites have to be the births of both our perfect boys. Odin will be 3 on the 4th of July and Gray will be 1 on June 16th.

Q: Do you have any pets/what kind? Odin and Gray have a puppy brother named Caesar. He’s a 2-pound Teacup Yorkshire Terrier.

Q: What does family mean to you? Family is everything to us. The love, comfort and support from each other is what keeps us going day to day. Watching our boys play and laugh brings us the most joy in the world. We have such crazy busy schedules but I think my husband and I will both agree that nothing compares to being home as a family at the end of each day.

Q: How would your friends/neighbors describe you? Hmmm…. This is a tough one being as I have never asked this question. I’ll just say that we will always have a cup of milk or bottle of wine for a neighbor in need. As for friends and family, I feel pretty confident we would be described as loyal, there isn’t anything we wouldn’t do for a friend or someone that we care about.

Q: What are some of your family traditions? We don’t have many as our children are still so young, but prior to having littles, we used to dress up in theme for Halloween and have continued it with our boys the past couple of years. We are looking forward to creating many more family traditions

with our two boys.Q: What is something you would like to do or are looking forward

to doing in the next year? My husband sustained a spinal injury in Iraq in 2012. Since then, he has undergone countless medical

procedures and two fusion surgeries with the most recent just a few weeks ago. Over the next year, I would love to see him make a full recovery. That would be amazing!

Q: What is your favorite piece of advice or quote? My husband would assuredly say, “It’s better to ask for forgiveness than for permission” or… “When in doubt, empty the magazine”.

Q: If you could travel anywhere with your family, where would it be and why? We would love to and will be taking our boys on a dog sledding trip to see the northern lights.

Moving to the Lake Travis area has been one of the best decisions we’ve ever made. We love our community and are looking forward to raising our boys here.

The silver screen will light up the night skies this summer at the Lakeway Movies in the Park and Dive-In Movies at the pool series.

Lakeway Parks and Recreation Department alternates these free summer movies series from dusk to 8:45 p.m. Fridays that feature popular animated and family movies.

“Whether it’s a favorite flick that your family has enjoyed before or one that you missed at the theaters, our summer movies are a great way to spend a summer evening outside under the stars or in the pool,” Lakeway Parks and Recreation Director Andra Bennett said.

This summer’s Movies in the Park are “Secret Life of Pets” on June 16, “Sing” on July 14 “The Wild Life” on July 28 and “Lego Batman Movie” on Aug. 11 at Lakeway City Park, 502 Hurst Creek Road.

Free popcorn and other treats will be available for purchase.Guests are invited to bring a blanket or a lawn chair. So that

everyone may see the screen city staff requests the public to place blankets in the middle and lawn chairs on the outside. Also, we request that any smartphones/blinking/glowing items be put under your blanket while the film is being shown. Please do not bring dogs to this event.

Admission is $3 per person.The pool area will be cleared at 8 p.m., and anyone wishing to

see the movie will be charged $3 to be let back into the pool area at 8:30 p.m. to enjoy the film. Swimming is allowed while the movie is being shown.

Step to the beat at the next Lakeway Big Band Bash from 8-10 p.m. June 12 at the Lakeway Activity Center, 105 Cross Creek.

While the heat of summer rises, enjoy a large dance floor in an air conditioned ballroom with tables available for your own treats at a place where you may invite your friends without the hassle of reservations.

The Lakeway Big Band Bash is on the second Monday of each month, from 8 to 10 p.m. Admission is free, but donations to the band are encouraged.

Kent Dugan’s 17-piece orchestra, The Republic of Texas Band, features Lakeway singers David Cummings and Lisa Clark. This band consistently appeals to everyone. Expect to hear a wide variety of favorite tunes, mostly from the Sinatra era, with fresh arrangements.

“We are pleased to see different generations come to enjoy this great music in a casual setting,” Lakeway Arts Committee chairman Fred Newton said. “Have a pleasant dinner out on the town, and then and come to the Bash at 8 p.m.”

Lakeway’s Big Band Bash welcomes dancers of all ages


Join the City of Lakeway for its July 4th Celebration on Tuesday, July 4, featuring its 42nd annual parade and pageant celebrating this year’s theme of “Patriotism on Parade.”

The parade will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the Live Oak Driving Range on Lakeway Drive and continue down Lakeway Drive, ending at Cross Creek Drive adjacent to the Lakeway Activity Center, 105 Cross Creek.

Heading the parade will be Grand Marshal Dr. Brad Lancaster, Lake Travis Independent School District superintendent.

“This year’s 4th of July Celebration is sure to be a great event, so mark your calendars now to join in the fun,” said Andra Bennett, Parks and Recreation director and event committee chairwoman. “Friends, family and neighbors carrying American flags and dressed in red, white, and blue come out to cheer on parade participants. It’s a community affair you don’t want to miss.”

Kicking off the parade is a flyover of the Devil Dog, a World War II B-25 bomber flown and maintained by a volunteer organization of the Commemorative Air Force.

Some of the early parade entrants are the Lake Travis High School Cavalette officers and cheerleaders, the new Lake Travis Community Library Bookmobile making its first appearance, the mighty Wells Fargo Stagecoach, Texas Ranger Veronica Gideon, Nick Renneker on sax with drummer Ken DeBower, and the riderless horse symbolizing soldiers lost on the field of battle, among others.

Lakeway civic groups adding local flavor will be Dottie’s’ Follies, Lohmann’s Ford Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, The Lakeway Church AWANA and Children’s Ministry, Women’s Club of Greater Lakeway, Lake Travis Community Library District Board and more.

The Pageantry of the Flags, a popular annual tradition in Lakeway, will follow the parade at 10:30 a.m. at the Lakeway Activity Center, 105 Cross Creek. Karl Ansbach will be master of ceremonies, and Grand Marshal Dr. Lancaster will give the keynote address. A free continental breakfast of coffee, doughnuts and juice is available to all before the pageant begins. The pageant is filled with songs, tales and stories highlighting the community’s gratitude to the military, both active and retired, for their service in defending the freedoms we all enjoy. Patriotic music will be performed by the Wildflowers.

The Lakeway Swim Center, 3103 Lakeway Blvd., will be open from noon to 8 p.m. July 4 at a reduced cost of $3 per person.

D r. B r a d L a n c a s t e r , superintendent of the Lake Travis Independent School District, will serve as grand marshal in Lakeway's 42nd annual July 4th Celebration. Dr. Lancaster will lead the way in a community parade at 8:30 a.m. July 4 on Lakeway Drive from the Live Oak Driving Range to the Lakeway Activity Center, 105 Cross Creek, where the Pageantry of Flags will commence with him as the guest speaker.

A former teacher, assistant principal, principal, executive director for curriculum, assistant superintendent and superintendent in the Midway, Allen, Ennis and College Station school districts, Lancaster earned a bachelor of science degree in secondary education from Baylor University as well as master of science in educational

administration and a doctorate of education degree from Texas A&M University in College Station.

“We are pleased that Dr. Lancaster will serve as our grand marshal in this year's July 4th Celebration,” Lakeway Mayor Joe Bain said. "He joins a distinguished list of grand marshals that led our community's celebration of our country's freedom."

During his five-year tenure at Lake Travis, the district has experienced both phenomenal growth in student enrollment and success in academic and extracurricular programs.

Some of the district’s many accomplishments during this time include:

*Earning the prestigious University Interscholastic League’s Lone Star Cup for team performance in district and state championships during the 2011-2012 school year; increasing the number of National Merit Scholars at Lake Travis High School;

*Garnering recognition by the College Board as a member of the AP District Honor Roll for increasing access to AP course work while simultaneously maintaining or increasing the percentage of students earning Platinum scores of 3 or higher on AP Exams;

*Ensuring that projects contained in the $158.5 million bond program approved by voters in 2011 are completed at or under budget and on time.

At his annual State of the District address to the Lake Travis Chamber of Commerce, Lancaster discussed the projected growth of the district, its financial challenges stemming from the state recapture program, and the possibility of both a bond and a tax ratification election in November 2017, which would cover growing expenses without raising the tax rate.

The district is the eighth-fastest growing system in the state, and is expected to expand by at least 61 percent in the next year. He attributes the growth to the great school system and job availability in the state.

His role requires oversight of myriad departments and operations.“The board hires me to do a variety of things: hire all staff, prepare

a budget for the board, manage principals, maintenance, operations department, transportation department, individual campuses, food service department, construction department and recommend a tax

rate,” Lancaster explained. “In generalized terms, the board expects me to manage, run, and supervise day-to-day operations for the school district, which is a long list.”

Student enrollment at Lake Travis ISD has increased by 4,215 students, roughly 76 percent over the past 10 years, and the district is projected to continue growing at a similar rate: another 5,676 students could enter the district by 2025. Attendance rate is currently 96.3 percent.

“The primary goal of the LTISD is to make sure that when the students graduate they are ready to take the next step and be successful at it, whether they enroll in college, join the military, or have a family and become a taxpayer,” he said. “Not flunking out of college or getting fired from their first job is a reflection of their success.”

He praised a community that is engaged in the education and development of its youth.

“We are incredibly blessed with a strong student body, and have parents that are fully invested in the education of their children,” he said. “It allows us to recruit the very best teachers and administrators.”

Lancaster and his wife, Karen, have two children, Julia, a graduate of Texas A&M University, and Will, who currently attends Texas A&M University.

Around Lakeway

A recount committee chaired by Richard Drury confirmed by hand recount on May 22 the results of the May 6, 2017 bond election with Proposition 1 passing by a nine-vote margin, the same as was reported on Election Day.

The proposition called for $23,065,000 in bonds for a new 31,000-square-foot police facility project and related infrastructure at the corner of Lohmans Crossing and Lohmans Spur, across from Lake Travis Community Library.

A total of 1,063 votes were cast for the police facility, and 1,054 were cast against it.

The City of Lakeway would like to thank Travis County staff for their help in recounting the results.

A meeting was scheduled for Wednesday, May 24, for Lakeway City Council to canvass any changes in the vote. However, that meeting was canceled because it was unnecessary.

Women’s Club has more than 500 members who enjoy monthly general meeting with interesting speakers and 25 special interest groups, ranging from antique, garden, dinner, singles and investment clubs to ten different book clubs. The Out and About, Galloping Gourmet, Expats, Retirement Craft, Poetry, Sing A Long, Stitchery, and Opera groups also provide members with a variety of functions during the year. The group’s mission is to promote social, cultural and intellectual growth. Membership in the Women’s Club of Greater Lakeway (WCGL) is limited to women living within the City of Lakeway, Lakeway ETJ and The Hills. Photographs of an emerging Cuba by Lakeway photographer Cheri Lomonte will be featured in June at the Lake Travis Community Library in the meeting room and on the bookmobile.

Mrs. Lomonte made her photographs during a trip to Havana in 2012. While there, she discovered the once-splendid buildings of the city had deteriorated to a mass of wires, ropes, and string holding things together. But as Havana had decayed, the resiliency of the Cuban people was undeniable; it was everywhere—and that inner joy is what Lomonte celebrates in the photographs featured in her upcoming exhibition.

“Although I was confined to where I could explore and the magnificence of a once exotic and thriving country was now in disrepair, I still managed to discover a beautiful, stunning, and joyous people,” said Lomonte.

Cheri and her husband Tony have lived in Lakeway for twelve years. They share six kids and 13 grandchildren. In addition to traveling and enjoying their family, the Lomontes are very active in the community. Cheri is the founder of the Frontline Faith Project, which serves the spiritual needs of our armed forces.

Lomonte’s photography show, titled “Images of Cuba: A Best and Fleeting Moment,” opens June 1 and runs through June 30, 2017. A reception is planned on Sunday, June 4 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. in Lake Travis Community Library meeting room, and the public is welcome and invited to attend. Refreshments will be served and Cheri Lomonte will be on hand to answer questions and visit with guests.
