It’s Always Been About Jesus

“On the lips of the catechist the first proclamation must ring out over and over: ‘Jesus Christ loves

you; he gave his life for you; and now he is living at your side every day to enlighten, strengthen and

free you.’” (EG, #164)

Wow.

If you read the above definition of what the “kerygma” is, as offered by Pope Francis in The Joy of

the Gospel and restated by Bishop Ricken at Spring Leadership Day on May 10th, it might be

interesting to consider when you first heard that message “proclaimed” in your own life. Have you

ever heard this core message put so succinctly? The kerygma is the proclamation of the Good News

of Jesus to the world. That proclamation is our role as professed disciples.

As parish leaders moving forward with Phase II of Bishop Ricken’s plan, Disciples on the Way, each

of us is going to be asked to consider our own relationship with Jesus as a disciple. According to

Bishop Ricken:

A disciple is one who follows Jesus, loves Him, wants to learn from Him, be with Him, and

share him with others. A disciple is one who is baptized, confirmed and who practices the

faith joyfully.

If you were asked to circle the words or phrases in this definition that applied to you personally, what

would they be? The answer to that question will be important as we move forward to help others

encounter Jesus in our parishes and communities. It begins with us and in different stages each of us

will be called to honestly acknowledge where we are on the “disciple continuum.” We will then be

asked to take the important steps to become true disciples if we are not fully there so that we can take

the message of Jesus to everyone around us.

As always, the real beauty and joy in this plan is that we will be “on the way” together. Just as with

the early disciples, we can support, encourage and hold hands along the path knowing Jesus is

walking with us.

Blessings on your summer!

Juventud Franciscana “JuFra”- Franciscan Young Adult Group

JuFra is the fraternity of Hispanic Young Adult people who feel called by the Holy Spirit to share the experience of the

Christian life, in the light of the message of St. Francis of Assisi, to live the Gospel deepening their own vocation in the

scope of the Saint Francis Order. It consists of the whole ecclesial fraternity with the charism of St. Francis, which is

composed of local fraternities coordinated among them.

AGES: Women and single men, without children ages, 18 to 30 years old, are members of the Franciscan Young Adult

Group called JuFra.

The Franciscan Young Adult mission is to work together to build a fraternal and evangelical life to preach the Word of

God. The aim is to bring the youth to live the Christian fullness as Francis, guided by the Gospel and illuminated by the

Holy Spirit, within the social reality in which they live and to find their vocation developing their life project.

The Franciscan Young Adult Group meets regularly to foster the spirit of brotherhood and Christian/Franciscan vocation;

it is included as a fundamental activity apostolate. According to the Franciscan charism to respond to local, regional and

national needs, nourished in prayer, they participate with youthful spirit of the sacramental life of the Church, especially

the Eucharist; deepening dialogue and collaboration with the Franciscan fraternities and other ecclesial groups, especially

with young adults. JuFra is partially funded by the Bishop’s Appeal and Catholic Foundation of the Diocese of Green Bay.
