Cheers to the Holidays and New Year!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and happy new year. I know I was so blessed with all the family gatherings and new beginnings. It energized me and gave me a new push for some ESA fun.

What are you doing in 2019 to make an IMPACT? What charities are you supporting? Are you doing something new and exciting? Rally together ESA Ohio we can do it and be stars!

Ohio State ESA has been doing so many great things lately. I am so excited for everyone this year. ESA is such a great organization. I can’t thank my Aunt Brenda Meyers enough for getting me involved.

Let’s all wish Madeline, our Vice President, a safe and fun journey as

Happy New Year to all of you! It seems the year has gone by way too fast but, yet here we are in 2019! Once again it is time to start thinking about the 2019 – 2020 year in ESA. That means as your Vice President I will be reaching out for your support to fill our board for the coming year.

What I would like to see is the elected and appointed board be a representation of all chapters. This is our State Board not mine. Working together with each of you would be my honor. If you any concerns that you can’t do the job or any other silly reason you think

of, let me know. I can tell you from experience that everyone will be of great support to you as a great state should. I had concerns I the beginning that I was not capable, but with the love and support of my sisters I was fine, and you will be as well.

So, attached in the BJ is the nomination form for officers as well as the BID Form to have future meetings. Please think about running for an office, you won’t regret it! If you do have any questions, please feel free to contact me anytime. You can also reach out to other ladies who have

been on the board and they will happy to any questions you may have.

Please keep in mind I will be looking for appointed officers as well. There are a variety of positions that may interest you. So please read over the information and consider running for an office. You will not regret it.

Mandy is going to be a hard act to

follow so please help me out! I

think she is a great President that

has led us to great opportunities!

Thank You!

I received a Facebook posting from Debbie Savignano (a former Ohio State Council President) that I thought was so appropriate to share with each of you. Hello, welcome to flight #2019. We are prepared for takeoff into the New Year. Please make sure your Attitude and Blessings are secured

and locked in an upright position. All self-destructive devices should be turned off at this time. All negativity, hurt and discouragement should be stowed away. Should we lose altitude under pressure, reach up and pull down a Prayer anytime throughout this flight. Prayers will automatically be activated by Faith. Once your Faith is activated, you can assist other passengers. There will be NO BAGGAGE allowed on this flight. The captain (GOD) has cleared us for takeoff. Be true, honest, and sincere and GOD will provide a smooth flight. DESTINATION GREATNESS... Remember Christ is in you, not just with you.

According to the By Laws, I am required to submit a proposed 2019-2020 OSC Budget for review at the March Council Meeting to be voted on at Convention. I am submitting the combined current 2018-2019 budget and the proposed 2019-2020 budget. I am basing the proposed budget Income on the current OSC Membership of 85 paid members at $30./per member for a total of $2250.00, all other income remains the same for a total Income of $9933.15. OSC Council Expenses, I am proposing an increase for the OSC President’s IC Convention expenses (registration, lodging,

transportation) to $975.00 from the current $800.00. Reason for the increase is the cost of living has increased and the OSC President or her Representative is required to attend. All other Expenses remain the same. Total Expenses will increase to $5043.00 and the 2020-2021 carry over will be $4890.10.

As of December 31, 2018, the OSC Council has 85 paid Members and an Income of $6761.96 and total Expenses of $1380.00 leaving a balance of $5381.95, which corresponds with the checkbook.

In December, Delta Chi pledged two new members, which bring OSC paid members from 83 to 85 members. A warm ESA and Ohio State Council Welcome goes out to Delta Chi’s new members, Pam Wills and Donna Hobson.

The Convention fund at the September Council Meeting had a balance of $300.72. On October 9, 2018 submitted a $250.00 check to the Hope Hotel as a deposit for the 2019 OSC Convention. The December 31, 2018 checkbook balance is $50.72.

Our greetings to all who are enjoying our mild winter . . . .so far!

There were nine of us from Ohio attending the MARC

Conference in October and we all had a great time. It is always special to meet up with our friends from the MARC states, the Leadership was informative and the meeting productive.

Becky Rasmussen, a “passionate, social justice warrior” through the organization “Call to Freedom”, really opened our eyes to the serious and extremely sad problem of human trafficking and sex exploitation in our country. Heartbreaking stories made you weep but the success of helping women transition into a life of their own made you share her feeling of joy and peace.

Theresa Huntimer, “Comfort for Homeless Vets” brought home the desire to help veterans and increased our awareness of the needs. She also introduced us to a project for making sleeping mats for

Page 4

MARC . . . BRENDA MEYERS & SHIRLEY KRCMAR

homeless veterans from grocery bags. It takes 700 grocery bags and 50 hours to crochet one and directions are available.

Elaine Doll-Dun, “Life is a Marathon, so Double Tie Your Shoes”, never stopped making us laugh with her stories and her comments. However, her real message was the need to be fit and getting fit being part of the fun; fitness of mind and body as our right and our obligation.

Our Ohio Crew had our dinner night out before attending the mixer Friday night. We were proud of Rose Wagner, candidate for Parliamentarian, as she presented her skit.

The Assembly began with an impressive flag ceremony by Jamie Atchison, Past IC President and was followed by welcomes and introductions. The treasurer’s report showed a balance on hand of $25,912.78 and the attendance figures showed between

134 and 139 attending different functions. The proposed changes to the By-Laws and Standing Rules all

passed. An ESA Foundation Video was presented by Rosalie Griffith,

Foundation Chair, and the IC President Skit and Message was given by IC President, Kim Kummer. Future Conference sites included our Ohio presenta-tion for “Lighting Up the Queen City”, October 11-12, 2019 and Indiana for 2020. Saturday

evening ended with a

Celebration of Life and the Installation of Officers. Congratulations to MARC President Deb Vercelleno, Nebraska, and her board. All the new information can be found on the MARC website.

www.esamarc.org

Sunday morning . . . . time to head home and WHAT?? a regular snowstorm greeted us as we left! We all know

how much Brenda Meyers likes to drive in snow and I’m sure Kathi Silvey can make up a new story of it. Everyone got home safely, some much later than others.

Judi Grefer & Brenda are meeting with the MARC Board February 2nd and should have a lot more information to share with the planning committee and membership about the 2019 Conference "Lighting Up the Queen City" in October 2019.

A VERY HAPPY 2019!! Hoping

all had a wonderful holiday season!

Does anyone know what happened to 2018, it really did speed by.

The new year brings new opportunity for your chapter to look into fundraising for St. Jude.

Yes, the St. Jude House ticket sales will be ramping up soon but please open up for discussion at your monthly meetings local opportunities to fundraise. Many

restaurants offer a 15% of food sale proceeds that can be donated to St. Jude or try hosting a bake sale at a church or community center.

Also, don’t forget to save up your change to add into the green planter “Grow Some $$ For St. Jude”.

EDUCATIONALS . . . BECKY KARLAK

ESA of Ohio has been busy learning quite a few different

and interesting Educational topics this year. One chapter is studying Royal Women. So far they have discussed the Blessed Mary Virgin, Mary Queen of Scots, Louisa Ulrike of Prussia and Native American Women. Did you know Pocahontas died at 21? Another area of study has been own city Cincinnati. Members have visited and learned about the

Krohn Conservatory, Music Hall, Rookwood and Finley Market. Operation Give Back was also visited. This is a wonderful organization that tutors needy students after school and provides food and support to their families. One of our talented members has a weekly art and crafts session for the students. It is very popular. Can’t wait to hear about future experiences. Fondly,

Meet Janie Age 3, blood cancer

Janie is a busy little lady. Sometimes her medicines slow her down, but for the most part, she is go, go, go—and it’s up to everyone

else to keep up it they can.

In early 2017, Janie had some tiny dots on her body and a low platelet count. Then, she developed a swollen belly and trouble walking. In June, she was found to have acute

lymphoblastic leukemia, a cancer of the blood.

Her dad, Joe, said, “When we got this diagnosis, I didn’t think there was much hope. Growing up, at my age, if anybody had that, it was a bleak future for them.”

Fortunately, Janie was immediately referred to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. St. Jude has increased the survival rates for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) from 4% before opening in 1962 to 94% today.

Three-year-old Janie is undergoing two-and-a-half years of

chemotherapy. This means there’s a very good chance she will have beaten cancer by the time she starts kindergarten.

Yet, thanks to St. Jude supporters, her family will pay

nothing out of pocket for this care. Families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food—because all a family should worry about is helping their child live.

“St. Jude takes away the stress of having to think about how you’re going to pay for medical bills, where you’re going to stay,” said Jonell, Janie’s mom. “They take care of everything and you can just be there for your child and not have to worry about anything else.”

Conference in October. Our night at Amana Colonies was enjoyable especially meeting Madeline Kurzinski and Rose Wagner for dinner. When you spend enough money at a quilt shop, you can claim to have paid their electric bill! The speakers were great and the meeting very productive. I am working on crocheting a mat for a homeless Veteran out of plastic bags and hope to finish it by March. (see Judi G’s mat above)

Of course, November was chocolate month for us again. Due to some miscalculating on my part, we made 300 lbs. of candy this year. It means more money to donate to our philanthropic choices. We could never do it without help from my neighbors, some of whom you might remember as former ESA members.

December is our time for the WGAR Country Cares for Kids St. Jude Radiothon. Chapter members volunteered different times and we

Whew! We just returned from the September Council Meeting and the

held weekly and our outside event at Kendra Scott Jewelry store helped reach our goal. Denise Gumbita and I were able to be volunteers beginning at 5:30 a.m. working with Lia Hones from ALSAC. It was a great day and I was especially proud to have my son, Andy, participate.

end of this year!

We joined in a quarter auction at American Legion as one of our Ways & Means projects. In addition, we sold chances on two baskets.

We also worked a craft fair at Laura’s church. For working, the church will make a donation to MS in Beta Psi’s name.

One of our socials was on November 10 at the Newport Aquarium. Can you believe that after lunch we sat on benches in the middle of Newport on the Levee eating ice cream with the temperature being 40 degrees!

We are pursuing an evening Painting

Beta Psi has been learning what each other’s interests are. Our educa-tionals have been such fun. We are sharing with our sisters something that we enjoy doing. We have learned how to make doggie scarves, how to make wreaths out of netting, how to make woven coasters and how to make candy. This month we’ll learn how to make sleeping mats for the homeless (as demonstrated at MARC). Judi will be demonstrating

how to crochet and create the mat.

We are going to be so crafty by the

with a Twist to raise funds to go to the Buckeye Basset Hound Rescue. These painting parties are always so much fun. Didn’t know we were so talented.

Our Christmas Party was held at Cooper’s Hawk Winery & Restaurant. We always have so much fun at our Christmas luncheon. Christmas ornaments were exchanged.

We’re looking forward to visiting Union Terminal later in the year.

Beta Psi wishes all our Ohio sisters a Happy Healthy New Year. !!!

had lots of help from students from Kent State. The phones didn’t ring as much since donors were able to use the internet this year. The exciting ending showed our total was higher than last year. Lia was our leader again.

“Sticks and Bricks” event and the groundbreaking for the next Dream Home got us revved up for the next drawing to be held in February. We will be working with Paige Cranwell again.

As Easterseals is celebrating their 200th year, we will be getting involved with activities for that event.

Looking forward to seeing everyone

Hello and Happy New Year to all our Ohio sisters,

Hoping everyone had a wonderful and safe Christmas Season.

We at Delta Chi have been busy spreading holiday cheer during this festive of all seasons.

In October, some of us were able to shop for St. Jude at Sigma Chi’s yearly event. It’s always a great, fun way to get an early start on Christmas presents and well as reconnecting with some of you awesome Ohio sisters!!

We also got together at Nancy Bolander’s house and made 16 fleece blankets to give to the ladies at Buckeye House for Christmas. Buckeye House is operated by Sojourner Recovery Services, and houses women who are being treated for, and overcoming drug addiction.

In November, many of us worked at 65 Roses Gala for Cystic Fibrosis, to help out our Delta Chi sister, Diane, who’s grandson suffers from CF. The gala is always a beautiful evening, and such a worthwhile cause. So proud to part of such a wonderful event!!!

We also worked for Easter Seals, First helping with their annual fund drive mailing, and again in December, helping to serve at their annual Christmas lunch for their clients and staff! Both events were well attended by Delta Chi and some of our other chapters. I think we are all so happy to be actively

helping out with Easter Seals again!! It’s such a great organization that makes such a difference in lives in our communities.

Our Delta Chi Christmas luncheon was December 1st at Parkers Blue Ash Grill! We all had a great time!! What a beautiful place . . . and the food was the best. . . of course, being with good friends was the best of all!!!

Jackie Sweeney has been volunteering at OGP (Operation Give Back) spending several hours a week working with high risk kids in the Northern Cincinnati Area. She asked us to donate homemade cookies for their Christmas Party. We were happy to pitch in and help out. Thanks to Jackie for all the hours you put in helping the kids.

Our Christmas white elephant gift exchange was hosted by Becky Karlak! Cocktail hour, before dinner, was hosted by some wonderful, handsome husbands, Bill Karlak, Bill Adams, Gerald Farabee and Richard Bolander. They did a great job keeping our glasses full. Thanks guys!! I think we’ll keep you all around. Cocktail hour was followed by a wonderful dinner, made by Becky, and our white elephant gift exchange.

After Christmas, some of us were able to meet at Krohn’s for a guided tour given by our very own Delta Chis member, Marsha Reynolds. Thanks Marsha!!! How lucky we are to live in Cincinnati

Page 9

DELTA CHI

and have such wonderful places within our reach!!

Delta Chi was able to donate $200.00 each to our state philanthropic projects this year: Alzheimer’s and Multiple Sclerosis.

We are very pleased to introduce our two newest members to Delta Chi, Donna Hobson and Pam Willis. They were sworn in at our December meeting, so are now official members. Donna and Pam are both so enthusiastic and will be a wonderful addition to our chapter.

I’m sure we will all be meeting soon to discuss our upcoming MARC conference in October. It will be here before we know it!!!

Wishing you all a happy, safe, and healthy 2019!

Love, hugs, and God Bless you all!

November: We purchased and collected new coats, hats and gloves for charity. Hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving.

December: We did not have a meeting, instead we had a fun Christmas party at Rose's. Debbie Kirby had some different and fun games. You would be surprised what you have on your cell phone.

Rose worked at the Easter Seals Christmas party for their clients. We helped prepare the trays of food. It was an easy job and very enjoyable. Since we are meeting at the fire house

for free, we decided to add them to our philanthropic projects. They

Happy New Year to everyone!!

September: We started our year by having our meetings at a fire house in Kings Mills. Since our members now live from Milford to Mason to Trenton, we decided to find a more central place to make it easier for everyone. It seems to be working very well.

October: Rose and Maddy went to MARC. They had a really good time. On the way to Sioux Falls they stopped in the small town of Amana, Iowa; where they met up with Brenda and Shirley. It was a nice little town and particularly great for quilters with more fabric choices than you can imagine. Although Rose did not win her bid for office, she is on the appointed Audit Committee for MARC. At Halloween, the chapter also collected can goods for the Milford and Loveland food banks.

have several families that they provide gifts and food for at Christmas time; so our members donated gifts and gift cards which we gave to the firemen for the families. We also made lots of cookies. We gave the cookies and candies to the firemen as a thank you. There were so many cookies that they shared them with the two other fire departments in the area. During the holidays we had lots of travel. Maddy and Nick's son, Joel, came in from Seattle; Kathy's daughter and son-in-law came in from Chicago, Elaine went to Atlanta and Rose visited her daughters, one in Michigan and one in Wisconsin. Rose woke up in Wisconsin on Christmas to a white Christmas. It had snowed during the night and it was beautiful.

Now that the holidays are over, we

are gearing up for an exciting 2019!
