We have just come through another intense and prolonged American political season. A quick glance

suggests that presidential campaigns raised well over $2 billion. In this over-heated, all-consuming atmosphere, it is easy to think that sufficient money for the right political answers will solve America’s woes. True, political problems need political solutions. Social problems need social solutions. Truer still, spiritual problems need spiritual solutions.

As I prepare this editorial, America’s presidential election has not yet taken place. The race still looks close. Whichever side has won by the time you read this, the same point applies. Political success can contribute to spiritual defeat. Here is how: Suppose, after exhaustive effort and expense, the winning side (whichever it is) celebrates: “America is saved!” Really? Does that reinforce yet another deception, that politics is our nation’s savior? A temporal triumph does little to address Amer-ica’s greatest needs, which are spiritual. Placing a person in the White House means nothing for placing any person in Christ.

Are we minimizing the importance of helpful politics? Not at all. I was raised

amid Africa’s power struggles and truly appreciate America’s non-violent system. But we still need biblical perspectives. America’s Founding Fathers quoted many Scriptures as they corresponded and prepared for the U.S. Constitution. Some quoted Jeremiah 17:9: “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” They based separation of powers on that. They argued that all people, leaders included, are fallen and therefore need checks and balances. Good political choices can help this process. But (to adapt Lincoln) government of the fallen by the fallen for the fallen still leaves them fallen. Neither better education, nor better health policies, nor better economics ever saved a soul. “Neither is there salvation in any other [than Christ]: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). “Do not put your trust in princes, in mortal men, who cannot save” (Psalm 146:3).

Jesus is the Savior. His Word is the ultimate Constitution, Bill of Rights and Emancipation Proclamation. The Good News is God’s power to save. Imagine if we poured into this spiritual campaign the kind of energy, strategy and giving shown in recent secular campaigns. Does our desire to honor our eternal King exceed their ambition for a

term in office? Does our compassion for the lost exceed their drive for power? Does our generosity for Christ’s cause proportionally put their

generosity for lesser causes to shame? Election fever is past fora while. But our mission—the real business of saving our nation and our world—continues as intensely as ever. Are you on the front

line? Are you devoted to the cause? Is your support truly sacrificial? This is the time to prove your priority.

A letter from Bradley Meredith, WBS student to the Plymouth church:

Hello, my name is Bradley and I would like to share with you a miracle of sorts. For those of you

who know the Lord, this will most likely uplift you and simply make you smile; but for those who may not know Jesus, I can only pray that this may encourage you to make a change in your spiritual condition so that you may know the joy and love that I do now.

My story starts in late 2009. I was incarcerated for the fourth time, and faced over 100 years in prison. I had a 20 year old fiancée who was eight and a half months

pregnant with my first child. My world fell apart when she cut me out of her life due to my incarceration.

In a jail cell, suicidal, at the complete end, I cried out in anguish of the tragedy that my life had become. I told God that if He was listening—if He truly cared about me—to save me from myself. Since I am writing this almost two years later, you would be right to assume that He did just that.

I went through a very rough transition period. I lashed out at those who knew me best. I pushed away the entire world as I desperately sought out the Lord. In March of 2010, I began doing Bible studies through many different organizations. By

many, I mean several dozen. It was through a lesson from World Bible School that I met your

beloved Zona Christensen, a woman who has become a dearly cherished friend, confidant and sister in Christ. Unlike so many others who simply graded, Zona took the time to answer my questions about the Scriptures and to offer her much welcomed

insight into my situation and life in general. When I had completed the WBS series,

I was worried that the correspondence I now so dearly enjoyed would cease. I humbly asked Zona if she would write to me as a pen pal. I was overjoyed when she graciously accepted this request and she has honored it continuously since. Not only did she write to me on a regular basis, but she also took it upon herself to contact a local minister with the church of Christ to inform

The Lord works in mysterious ways and this

was one of those days that proved that again to me. We had visited

post offices all across Malawi. In many we saw World Bible School mail sitting in the mail boxes undelivered. The reason is the economic downturn in Malawi, with huge inflation. The currency (Kwacha) has been devalued by 49% in the past five months. Malawi’s government raised rural P.O. Box rental rates from K1,000 to K5,000, and urban from K5,000 to K20,000. Most customers refused to pay the unaffordable increase, even after the Post Master made changes. The result is that much of our WBS mail lies unclaimed. For example, one region’s Post Office has 50 mail boxes, 45 of which are closed. We asked the official

to pull the mail from one closed P.O. Box. In that eight inch stack of mail, all but three pieces were WBS lessons.

Back in Mzuzu, Moster Kanyinji and I visited Post Master Msiska, a brother in Christ and Ruth Orr’s WBS student. He said, “The Post Master General happens to be visiting our Regional Headquarters. I am going there for meetings this afternoon. Perhaps I can speak to them about this

matter.” Later, Brother Msiska phoned us to come immediately to see the Regional Post Master. She realized this matter needed the Post Master General’s ear, so she took it on herself to make the phone call. He was just leaving town, but turned back at her urging.

It is not every day you meet a nation’s Post Master General, especially after hours when he has had a long day with many more hours of travel ahead. What a gracious man! After hearing our concerns about box closures, he was most sympathetic and said, “You are a religious entity. These students must get their lessons; we must find a solution.” After much discussion it was agreed that his office would direct all Malawi Postal Agencies to release all WBS mails at the earliest time and to re-negotiate payment terms with schools and businesses so that the problem will not persist. We are thankful for our God’s work.

God is good!

Giving that makes an impact. Speaking of giving that makes an impact, many have given to support my

Ironman triathlon fund raiser for WBS. My event on September 22 was a big success and I had a fun (fun?!) 16 hour “day at the races”. It’s not too late! Join others in helping me reach more by sending a check noting “Kevin’s event”. Let’s make an impact!

Alive and Well

On page one, John Reese illustrates an interesting point about giving and priorities in America. It’s

true that we here in the U.S.A. are among the most generous people in the world. And certainly a gift to mobilize political candidates can be a worthy contribution to society’s greater good. Oh, but that mere funding would enable our political system to be effective and efficient! But it won’t, will it?

Can a mere dollar do much spiritual good? Absolutely! It lets one soul study the Bible with WBS. When you add up that $1.5 million in giving to WBS enables us and WBS teachers to teach some 1.5 million Bible students, each and every dollar takes on a whole new significance. One dollar can make quite a spiritual impact!

We invite you—urge you—to give generously to the worldwide ministry of WBS before 2012 closes. Let God work through your gift so that we, with you, can make an impact—one soul at a time.

Do you want to assure that your giving to further the Gospel can continue to make an impact long

after you’re gone? Consider including WBS in your will. Many people find that they can afford a bequest gift that “endows” their annual gift.

If one gives $2,000 a year to WBS, he or she would plan a $40,000 bequest gift to our endowment fund. As that fund grows for the future, we can use 5% of it annually for ministry expenses. Hence, a $40,000 bequest gift yields $2,000 (5% of $40,000) in perpetuity—for as long as WBS exists. Wow, what an impact!

For more about WBS’ endowment and “endowing your annual gift”, please contact me at 800-301-2006.

Remembering Betty Myers Terrill (1923-2012)by John Reese

In mid-September my wife and I traveled to visit Betty in Stephenville, TX. We enjoyed reminiscing and visioning

over a lively lunch with Betty, her sister-in-law, Jerry and Elbert Lindley, and long-time minister and friend, Don Parker of the Graham St. church. We were shocked and saddened to hear that Betty passed away October 12.

Betty was born to Jolly and Lela Myers in 1923. She married Eldon Terrill on November 20, 1942. An active member of the De Leon church of Christ, Betty was well-known and often honored as De Leon ISD’s business manager for 42 years and a leader in many social clubs and events. For many years she was the main ongoing benefactor for the Jolly Myers Fund set up specifically to provide WBS materials to WBS teachers of limited means. With Betty’s encouragement this Fund was renamed the Myers-Cox Teacher Assistance Fund to add as honorees its long-time stewards Howard and Margaret Cox. This Fund has become more important than ever because many Internet teachers are now in countries where cost sharing is difficult.

Betty is survived by her son, John Terrill, and his wife, Mary Jean; and daughter, Cecelia Boswell, and her husband, Kent; grandchildren and other dear family members. The family added this note to the obituary: Memorial donations may be made to World Bible School at P.O. Box 2169, Cedar Park, Texas 78630; Foster’s Home for Children at P.O. Box 978, Stephenville, Texas 76401; or the De Leon Library, in memory of Betty.

The method of Bible correspondence teaching by many everyday Christians

has been working effectively for more than 40 years. But the name “World Bible School” was placed on the method by Jimmie Lovell in 1973, and that is the year from which we typically measure events. That makes 2013 a historic landmark—the 40th anniversary of WBS.

Back in 1962, Jimmie had started the Action periodical. His editorial in the first issue included this prayer, “God, my Father, I pray that Thy blessing may be upon the work of this little paper…. [May it] be the means through which thousands of souls in all parts of the earth may come to know the Lord….” The Lord’s answer came largely through Action’s widespread influence in announcing, launching and nurturing “World Bible School.” Since its inception, WBS has entered virtually every nation on earth and touched some 25,000,000 lives. Many thousands have been won to Christ, and key conversions

Betty Terrill and Jerry Lindley

40 Reasons to Celebrate in 2013!have led to amazingly fruitful works in many regions. Prayer is powerful!

At the time when Jimmie first publicized the name “World Bible School” he was 78 years old. Jimmie already had led an amazingly full and fruitful life, promoting the church’s mission all along the way even as he earned his living with DuPont chemical company. Yet God reserved Jimmie’s final years as his most exciting, influential and productive—a remarkable testimony to God’s awesome work through His humble children. This is a heritage, history and future well worth celebrating!

40 Special Events are planned for celebrating WBS’ 40th Anniversary. WBS leaders, who already travel extensively through the United States and many nations, will be all the more active for this unique celebration. Examples include special follow up campaigns to Ghana and Zimbabwe. Also, you have WBS teachers who should be honored. 2013 is an ideal

year for that purpose. Let us know who these teachers are and how we might help you to honor them. WBS is gearing up right now for 2013 celebratory events and travels. This is the perfect time to plan ahead, and to send an especially generous contribution for an exceptional year of world outreach. As always, such celebrations are not self-centered. They serve as Jimmie’s promotion did: to glorify the God who answers prayer and to accelerate WBS to touch millions more with the Good News of Jesus, the Savior of the world.

Prepare for WBS’ 40th Anniversary celebration by sending a

generous gift and requesting your own copy of the unique 2013 WBS Calendar prepared by John and Beth Reese from WBS mission travels worldwide. Send your special contribution to World Bible School, P.O. Box 2169, Cedar Park, TX 78630. Along with your gift, be sure to add a separate note requesting your personal copy of the 2013 WBS Calendar.

T ps forTeachers!

By Bill Colwell

We often emphasize that teaching should

be personal—showing your students that you truly care about them. The recent exchange below, between a WBS teacher

and an online student, illustrates how important this can be.

Student: “I appreciate your taking the time to ask me questions and discussing the theme with me. I understand from my cousin that she has a complete different experience with her study helper. She is not having a bad experience. It’s just that she does not ever get any feedback from her. When I share with her that you send me comments or questions, she comments that she never gets any comments or questions whatsoever. So now she keeps her answers to the open questions short and she does not bother

anymore to go into details.”

Teacher: “Maybe she should ask her helper to do just that. Sometimes helpers don’t feel their comments are wanted, so if your cousin asks maybe it will help.”

Student: “My cousin took your advice and she mentioned to me that she received a very nice comment from her study helper, and she is thankful for your prayers. So I say thank you together with my cousin.”

Are you giving personal attention to your students? As this interactive example shows, it can make all the difference!

Two courses conclude the Master Series. They are the courses that mature

converts in their new life in Christ. The Family of God helps students to understand the one body (church) of Christ, and to be integrated into the local congregation. It accomplishes this through advanced study emphasizing the first half of Ephesians and related

portions of the Bible. By this time, students should be sharing what they have learned, so this course is structured to serve both correspondence and a small group study (a valuable tool for your group, too). Likewise, students should be studying more deeply, so this course expands to 80 pages, with many

cross-referencesand helps.

Live a Life of Love continues the deeper study with the second half of Ephesians, with the same advanced features. This is Ephesians’ section on practical Christian living, with emphasis on victory in the power of Christ’s blood, His Spirit and prayer. These two courses were written for all advanced Bible students, with special concern for isolated students far-flung across the globe. This may be the only resource available to them, which accounts for the comprehensive nature of these study tools. Whether near or far, these valuable courses will strengthen you and your students.

SCAM ALERT!

Be skeptical of long lists of WBS enrollments sent to your church

straight from Nigeria and similar countries, particularly if you didn’t request them. Also, be wary of calls or emails from overseas with similar lists. They may be handwritten or typed, but these same lists likely are being sent to multiple churches. A church may send hundreds of WBS lessons to students who don’t exist. Or, they may receive hundreds of “dummy” answer sheets that look suspiciously similar.

Teachers have spent great amounts on lessons and shipping, all to no avail, while scammers profit and even pose as recruiting and follow up heroes worthy of support. Ron Pottberg recently returned from Malawi. He again encountered cases of such ‘heroes’ who use WBS to receive relatively lucrative incomes from gullible supporters—often unaware of each other. If you have any doubts about support situations or long lists of names, please contact us at WBS. We can advise you on how you should proceed.

Being a teacher for WBS is very rewarding. Shortly after I started

teaching, my wife who wanted nothing to do with the church, was reading over my shoulder while I was correcting a test. She was giving me the correct answers. So I asked if she wanted to take the course. She said she would and I signed her up. On September 14, 2012, I had the honor of baptizing my wife! It was what I had prayed for a long time.

Blanca Valdez had been an English teacher for 19

years, yet she was in Williamson County Jail,

Georgetown, TX, with a 25 year sentence. God led Nelda Burson and Shirley Beaver to give her love and teaching, and she was baptized on November 23, 1999. Having served her (reduced) time, she now serves her Lord in Mexico where she gained further biblical training at Torreon. Her personal teaching has brought 20 others to Christ in Colosio, and she helped launch a new congregation in Transporte, Durango State.

I asked Blanca what World Bible School and the jail volunteers mean to her. Her response: “WOW! ... When I was in prison, they were my whole life. Those lessons made me feel in love with God. I think I got addicted to those lessons. They had the power to make me forget

that I was in prison. I was free in my spirit before I got released from prison. Thank God for those people who spend their time in sending the lessons and grading them. I thank God for those jail volunteers who love God so much that

I share these things not as proof of Zona’s spirit, but of Christ’s Spirit living through her. Through Zona, Christ has provided, taught, counseled and strengthened me. By the fruits I have tasted from Zona, I have seen first-hand what being a Christian should entail, and I am blessed having been guided by a “doer” of the Word with a saintly heart.

I urge every Christian to go the extra mile like Zona, to find someone who needs a friend and to share the Good News. There was a time when Zona was the only friend I had. Now I thankfully call her my sister through the lessons she taught me. I have been responsible for leading over a dozen others to the foot of the cross.

Zona and her husband have gone through health issues in the past many months. Zona has often expressed her undying gratitude for the help she has received from her church family. For those that have been of assistance to her and Bert, I personally thank you. Christ in me commends you for the good work you have done in caring for his faithful servants. I am proud to know that a church is not only preaching the Word there in Plymouth, FL, but is also practicing the Spirit of Christ in its walk. For those of you who do not know these two members, please join me in remembering them both in your daily supplications.

I thank you all greatly, and ask that our Heavenly Father bless you all as abundantly as He has truly blessed me.

Wow is correct, Blanca! But the “wow” is you. God released you and is using your beautiful life to share Him with others. Your life is not easy but you are free! As a jail ministry worker for some 20 years, I am thankful and proud to call you my sister in Christ.

A group of World Bible School fans has made an exciting offer: “If WBS raises $25,000

by the end of 2012, we will match that amount with our $25,000.” What an impactful blessing! Some has come in already, but we must raise the bulk within the next few weeks to prove by year’s end that we qualify.

I would like to thank WBS for your outstanding courses. I completed a course and Dave Hill was my student

helper. I do not have enough words to describe Dave, how dedicated he is to God’s work. He was always there, I never waited for any material. I am looking

Editor’s Note: There are many ways to give. Our World Bible School workers at the home office in Cedar Park, Texas, give excellent service to facilitate your WBS outreach. They also give financially, with truly astounding generosity, for WBS to press forward. They also give their personal time at home as active and impactful WBS teachers. Here is Gale Scott’s story, with an appeal for prayer, about a WBS student taught by her and Linda Reville who recently retired from our office.

In the affluence and freedom of American life,

we often overlook the tremendous hardships Africans

experience just to survive, much less give themselves to serve others and to expand the Lord’s Kingdom. Linda and I have taught a refugee who fled the violence in a central African country

to a refugee camp in a neighboring country. After studying the WBS series, this refugee was baptized on September 1, 2009. He was the first person to obey the Gospel out of 144 such WBS students at the camp.

A nearby church of Christ commissioned this new disciple to preach the Good News and further establish the church within the refugee camp. Having lost unsaved family members in the violence in his homeland, he gladly accepted the challenge to become a sort of spiritual ambassador to the refugee camp.

He reports that life there has become even more dangerous. Government authorities from his home country actively recruit soldiers from within the refugee camp. Those who refuse are subject to harsh persecution, even

From Refugee to Ambassadorto the point of death. Six families have died through poisoning. Those same government officials recently issued an

order for all refugees to return to their homeland. The camp’s host country has been forced to comply with that particular repatriation.

The preacher has applied to the local church who commissioned him to assist him in obtaining permanent residence in order to continue his work with the camp’s church of Christ.

This will necessitate his constructing a home for his family of eight children. Please be praying for this family and that God, through His

providence, will work in this process to enable them to remain in their present location to continue in the Lord’s work with refugees.

He was the first baptized among 144 WBS students at the

refugee camp.
