August 2019 Presidents CornerFall must be arriving soon as football is back! Hope everyone has enjoyed our fairly mild summer in the Pacific Northwest. Our August luncheon speaker was Radm Vogt, Commander of the Coast Guard District 13 which covers Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana. The Admiral is new to the area, having assumed command last month. He gave us a great overview of Coast Guard operations in the Pacific Northwest, as he has been out visiting several of the facilities under his command. Earlier this month, I had the honor of representing our council at several Seafair activities. As part of Seafair, the Seattle Navy League Council recognized outstanding sailors and marines that work here in the Pacific Northwest. Several of those sailors recognized are on ships that are stationed here on the Kitsap Naval Base. Also in August was the change of command for the Kitsap Naval Base. Capt Alan Schrader was relieved by Capt Rich Rhinehart. Capt Schrader has been a great supporter of our Navy League council and we honored him at the Aug luncheon with the Navy League Scroll of Honor.

VADM Kriete, Deputy Commander, US Strategic Command, was in town and requested a meeting with Navy League and Submarine League members. In a packed house, VADM Kriete, a person familiar to Navy people in Kitsap, talked about the mission of Strategic Command. He discussed Strategic Commands mission and how vital the Kitsap Navy community was to that mission: Deter, Assure, Defeat. All three of those are supported in the region with Submarines, the Shipyard and the people. He reiterated the need for our military community people to be "Masters of their craft" and provided examples of just how the three mission elements are done. One thing he said was that Strategic Command's mission is clearly described on their web site as a lesson (warning?) for countries or people who might consider doing the US and our Allies harm.

Our Council recently began a scholarship program to support spouses who attend the Microsoft Military Spouse Technology Academy and stood up a Military Spouse Committee headed by Karin Zwolfer. The Committee's responsibilities include administering the scholarship.

The 22 week course runs M-F, 8 am-3 pm in Tacoma. The next course will begin in September. It is equivalent to Master’s level education. The course is free. Our scholarship is intended to help cover transportations costs.

On their web site, at https://military.microsoft.com/programs/msta/, Microsoft describes the program:

Microsoft Military Spouse Technology Academy (MSTA) provides an intensive 22-week onsite training program designed to empower military spouses with in-demand digital skills leading to well-paying and meaningful careers.Military spouses are an integral supporting force for members of our military. Through MSTA, Microsoft seeks to deepen its commitment to this community and to help military spouses build the skills necessary to succeed in the technology sector.

The goal of the program is to put the military spouse into gainful employment that is portable. The spouse must do online testing to be accepted into program first. As part of the program, Microsoft employees offer mentorship online. After graduation, spouses are given further employment opportunities through MSTA’s hiring partners and monthly symposiums.

President Steve Westover presented recent graduates Scarlett Reesh and Missy Bush with their scholarships at our June luncheon. The third recipient, Quynh Kennedy, was unable to attend,

This page is a repeat from our August Newsletter. Our Council believes this program to be a great opportunity for our military spouses.

Also at the Luncheon, the Bremerton Olympic Peninsula Council of the Navy League presented a Scroll of Honor to Capt Alan Schrader, Commanding Officer of Naval Base Kitsap, for his outstanding support of the Navy League on the occasion of his Change of Command.  Capt Schrader partnered with the Navy League on several activities and was twice the guest speaker at our installation dinners. He coordinated our base access lists, ensuring that our civilian members and guests could attend our luncheons on the Kitsap Naval Base.  He was a frequent attendee at our luncheons and just made things happen, including finding a US flag that was missing from our latest luncheon site. We hope he continues to join us in his new assignment as Chief of Staff for Admiral Scott Grey, Commander Naval Region Northwest.

Council Recognizes Captain Schrader

August LuncheonRADM Jack Vogt, USCG District 13 Commandant, spoke at our August luncheon, detailing the presence and value of the Coast Guard in our region. It was impressive to hear all that District 13 does for our country. While there, he and Command Master Chief (CMC) Chris Fly presented the Maritime Force Protection Unit Enlisted Person of the Year award to GM1 Robert d"Amatio, pictured here with the Admiral, CMC and our President, Steve Westover. It's always a treat to meet and chat with the outstanding young people who serve our country.

More photos of sailors and marines supporting the Suquamish Tribe

We published a story last month about this event, Navy and Marine Corps support of the Suquamish Tribe for their July canoe trip around the Salish Sea. These photos didn't arrive in time for the August newsletter but are too good to ignore. You may remember:

Every year the Native American tribes of the Salish Sea meet to affirm their traditions and culture. They travel by canoe stopping each night at a new village. The canoes weighing 1500-1800 lbs need to be hauled ashore. To protect them from the tides. For the last several years Kitsap area sailors and marines have assisted in the canoe hauling at Suquamish.
