President’s LetterDear Fellow Members,

Some of you may know that the fiscal year for the Chamber begins in October, and this drives muchof our planning, thinking, and assessment. The month of March is the halfway mark of our year andas such I am taking the opportunity to give you a “State of the Chamber” letter, to let you know howwe are doing. And we are doing great.

Our year opened with an excellent Golf Tournament that was well received. Then we had our mostsuccessful Economic Forecast Luncheon on record. Now our Crawfish Festival in the Heights ispoised to exceed expectations with more exhibit booths than ever, a large devoted committee,growing participation in the Idol of the Heights, a far reaching marketing impact, and the mostsponsors we have ever had.

Attendance is up on all of our monthly events, with small steady gains at the Breakfast Connection and large leaps atHYPO and ribbon cuttings. Our membership base is growing and showing a steady trend of growth. Congratulations toThai Spice for becoming our newest Silver Patron! Overall financially we are stable and healthy as an organization.

So what is the cause of all this success? It is threefold. First you have a dedicated staff working tirelessly on your behalf.Trish Gardiner and Glenda Clerc have stepped gracefully into their new roles and are some of the best people we couldhave working with us bar none. Larry Plasek continues to be a rock of Chamber history and dependability, and throughhis efforts our publications continue to improve. Second we have a phenomenal Board of Directors shepherding theorganization. Their vision and leadership - not to mention the collective business experience they represent – haveguided us through some stormy waters and into smooth calm seas. Third and greatest of all, the members themselvesdeserve the lion’s share of the credit. We have been blessed with some amazing committees and dedicated chairs.The increased attendance and event support represents our members re-investing in their Chamber.

We still have a lot to look forward to in the months ahead, but sleep easy and take pride in knowing that you are part ofone of Houston’s greatest organizations – The Greater Heights Area Chamber of Commerce!

Spotlight on Non-ProfitThis month we delve into the activities of the Girl Scouts ofSan Jacinto Council. The Council is located at 3110 SouthwestFreeway and Keilani Hamilton is the Community EngagementManager. Traditionally we focus on the organization, but thisarticle addresses the significance of the annual cookie sellingprogram and its benefits to the girls.

Sure Girl Scout cookies are tasty, but do you realize how importantthe experience of selling them is? Cookie sales help the girls learnskills and develop attributes that will enable them to becomesuccessful leaders. Among the skills learned are goal setting,decision making, money management, people skills and businessethics. These are skills they will need in everyday life.

Girls receive helpful guidelines for selling that include: “Say hi … Look me in the eye … Let me know that you are aGirl Scout.” They are capable of answering questions like: where does the money go? Ask us why we are Girl Scouts?And by-the-way, don’t call them cute. They know they are cute, but selling cookies is real. They are learning how to runa business and they want people to buy cookies because you want them, not because of their nice haircut or uniform.After all there are over 2 million Girl Scouts and they run the largest girl-led business in the world. In short, the cookieselling endeavor allows the girls to learn that they can do anything, and be anything! Congratulations girls and rest easybecause my freezer is stocked up every season.

Ambassador Committee LeadershipAmbassadors Work to Support the Members – Terry Jeanes, Chair“My GHACC membership first in the 80's and most recently since 2002 is only as good as beinginvolved and supporting fellow Chamber members. A mindset of "Be a Go-Giver” as well as aGo-Getter” and gratitude for my personal 30 year success as a Realtor in the GHACC market area,requires me to certainly give back in my community.”

“As a GHACC Ambassador the perfect opportunity exists to joyfully support our newest members,welcoming them, and facilitating those first important promotional opportunities of membership.Stepping up recently to chair the Ambassador committee, working with a great group of ambassa-dors who play big sisters/big brothers to our more recent members, is certainly another opportunityto foster and encourage members to take their business to “greater heights.” As Zig Ziglar stated,

“Life is an echo. What you send out comes back. What you sow you reap. What you give you get. What you see in othersexists in you.”

Why I Became a Heights Chamber Ambassador – Neil McGlone, Vice Chair“One of the great things about membership in The Greater Heights Chamber of Commerce is themany opportunities to get involved. After all, why even join a Chamber, civic club, association orother organization if you’re not committed to being active? Personally, I took that commitment toheart when I joined the Chamber in August 2011, shortly after moving to Houston from Dallas.Soon thereafter, the Ambassador Committee seemed to be a good way to get integrated, give back tothe Chamber through volunteer service and meet new members while making many new friends.”

“While I continue to serve as an Ambassador, that early ambition led to participation on severalother committees – including Crime Awareness, the Annual Crawfish Festival, the Annual GolfTournament, Government Relations and now, the Board of Directors. Has all this helped me grow my

Crawfish Festival to be Held March 7One of the highlight events of the Chamber year is the annual CrawfishFestival which was held on March 7 at 411 West 20th Street. Exhibitors,children’s fun areas, local school talent and much more were on displayduring a fun-filled day. The finals of the Idol of the Heights crownedthree winners and awarded prize money. A huge crowd of mudbugeaters were on hand as well as thosewho preferred a non-crawfish meal.Watch for full photo and detailedcoverage of this event in the Aprilissue of LINKED.

Education CornerFocus on the Education Luncheon is at hand – mark your calendars forMonday, May 18 at 11:30 at the Brookhollow Sheraton! Schools, Teachers,Staff, Students and Businesses will be recognized—don’t you want to be apart of that ensemble! You can! Become a Sponsor! Cookie Jo, renowned dancer and teacher and graduate of the area will beour speaker along with a surprise guest… keep tuning in to find out more!Internship Day is important for the seniors in the area as they obtain a ‘day inthe life of’ the person who works in the area they have interest in. Will you take a senior for a day or half aday on April 15? Texas has an education law that has students in all levels learning about careers and by8th grade identifying an area; as a business you can help by sharing your story, partnering with projectsfor a week or so; Garden Oaks Montessori has business opportunities, many of the schools have careerdays, Waltrip has Community of Heroes and Davis High School has senior internship day. What a greatway to build interest in the work you do, share the love of your work! There are new schools joining ourchamber and committee: Kate Adams with Arabic Immersion Magnet HISD and April Petronella withKumon-Heights! We also have Patricia Rumble with Express Theatre! This committee is growing –become involved! We will be working on summer plans, so come on down. Our purpose is to helpbusinesses grow through reaching out and partnering with schools; the education of the community isthe cornerstone of the business community’s wealth. We are a prosperous community – growing by leapsand bounds – and our schools will benefit from your expertise, your support and the modeling for ourstudents will make the Greater Heights even Greater! Megan Salch of Tell Your Tale Marketing & Design was honored at theFebruary Breakfast Connection. In recognition for serving as Chair ofthe Chamber’s Ambassador Committee for ten years, Megan received anaward from Chamber President Jacob Millwee. Megan’s dedication andleadership of the Ambassadors ensured that new Chamber memberswere promptly welcomed and informed as to the many benefits ofChamber membership. Allegiance Bank Texas Completes Merger with Enterprise BankGeorge Martinez, Chairman of Allegiance Bancshares, Inc. announced the completion of the merger ofFarmers & Merchants Bancshares, Inc. with and into Allegiance, and the merger of F & M’s whollyowned subsidiary, Enterprise Bank, Houston, Texas, with and into Allegiance Bank Texas, thewholly owned subsidiary of Allegiance, each effective January 1, 2015. The combined total assetsof Allegiance Bank Texas increased to approximately $1.8 Billion as a result of the merger. According toScott Lester, Bank Office President and former Chamber Chairman, “Allegiance will expand thenumber of its full service banking offices that include two in the Heights area plus others in Houston,Bellaire, Clear Lake and Katy, Texas.” “The merger provides the Allegiance team with additional, extraordinarybankers with valuable experience and an expanded reach to serve our Houston area community.”

She is a fourth generation Texan, born inBaytown, a graduate of Baytown SterlingHigh School and earned degrees inHistory and English at Texas A & MUniversity with a teaching certificationadded on. Following a stint with Harperand Row Publishers she traveled andspent time in the New York office,however, she decided the East Coast was not for her.It was on to graduate school at UT-Austin to learn cor-porate video production. Armed with new capabilitiesshe returned to Houston and put her talents to work forUT-Health Science Center as a writer/producer on adrug use prevention video project.

As one who easily makes friends, Bonnie did just thatand went to work for the M.D. Anderson CancerCenter where she wrote and produced videosincluding patient education, to doctor’s presentations,to pediatric Christmas card programs. This was followedby taking on the 90 second weekly syndicated HealthReport featuring the world renowned Dr. “Red” Duke.

In effect she went from writing andproducing oncology videos to the worldof the ER.

When two national patient advocacy groupsformed in 2009 she researched this newfield and made her decision at the beginningof 2014 to open her own business, HoustonHealth Advocacy, LLC. Since her family has

lived in the Heights for 20 years, she wanted to be apart of the local business community and that gave herthe impetus to join the Chamber. And she adds, “It is avery friendly group, so that’s a big plus!”

Bonnie is active in several industry associationsincluding the National Association of HealthcareAdvocacy Consultants. In keeping with her outgoingpersonality, she enjoys Laughter Yoga, taking careof the family menagerie of pets, and spending timewith her husband and two daughters. The Chambersalutes your drive and dedication Bonnie, andapplauds your many accomplishments.

Chamber Scholarship ProgramChanges Lives

The goal this year is to provide asmany scholarships as possible todeserving students. Donors arebeing solicited as we would like tocontinue our $1,000 per scholarshipbut other levels will also beawarded as well. The numberof scholarships and amounts aredetermined by our donors. $2,000sponsorships will fully support ascholarship, but donations of anyamount are welcome. Groups cancombine donations toward a fullscholarship. Eligible students arefrom the following high schools:Jefferson Davis, Memorial Hall,Reagan, Scarborough, St. Pius X,St. Thomas, Waltrip, Washington,Lutheran High North, KIPP andYES academies.

Since the inception of the scholarshipprogram, the Chamber has awarded160 scholarships representing over$320,000 in scholarships to area highschool seniors. The educationalscholarships and additional awardsare made possible through thegenerosity of luncheon sponsors,donors and attendees at theluncheon to be held in May.
