From the Commander,

I wish everyone a Happy Spring and hope your driveway is not as muddy as mine!

It’s hard to believe that another S.A.L. year is getting close to winding up. We have accomplished a lot so I encourage all the Squadrons to make sure that you send in your End Of Year Reports.

The updated forms will be available shortly and should be more user friendly.

These reports are critical to helping us keep our Tax-Exempt status with the Government but more importantly, are a showcase of how much our Organization contributes to our Veterans, our Children and Youth, and our Communities.

I have heard it said that some Squadrons “don’t want to brag about what they do” - I say if you are working hard, making where you live a better place, and showing that what you believe in is important to you and those around you, it is not “bragging” - it is a legitimate statement of your accomplishments and you can be proud of that!

As a Team we have done very well on getting new members yet we ask that you please keep go-ing after those who have not renewed. If we got those folks to pay their Memberships, we would have no trouble hitting our 100% as a Detachment.

Thank you for all the hard work you have done and let us know how your Detachment Officers can help you with your Membership efforts.

As a reminder, you must send in any Memberships to Department by May 1 to ensure that your members will get pre-printed cards for the next year. If not, you will have to hand-write them and then it also will not show Continuous Years, which is important for our members to see.

We recently enjoyed a fun day with the folks from Squadron 7, Hardwick, and many others as SQ. 7 held their Annual Bowling Tournament in Barre at Twin City Lanes. Fortunately for some of us, you don’t have to real good to enjoy the day. The camaraderie was great, a lot of money was raised, and as always, the staff at the Bowling Alley provided a fantastic experience. If you haven’t participated yet, we would encourage you to do so. You will enjoy yourself.

We have attended Post 100th Birthday Parties recently at Post 27, Middlebury and Post 3, Mont-pelier. It is an honor to represent our Detachment as your Commander and be able to convey greetings and congratulations on your behalf.

The hospitality extended to us was very nice, the meals were excellent, and the events were well-attended. It is encouraging to see a Post Family celebrate our Legion Centennial is good fashion like we experienced.

Page 3: Volume 7, Issue 8 April 1, 2019salvermont.com/forms_207_2724458291.pdfDelaware. The training focused on improving individuals communication skills in both written and oral formats

We look forward to seeing many of you at our Detachment Golf Tournament at Neshobe in Brandon on May 18. This is a fantastic event and a good portion of the money raised this year will go to bolster the National Guard Emergency Relief Fund [NGEAF]. This fund has been used over the years to help Guard Members and their families as they have needs resulting from Deployments or other situations where extra help is required.

We certainly appreciate these Soldiers and the sacrifices they make to keep us safe and secure, whether from Terrorist Attack, Natural Disaster, or other Emergency.

We hope to see many of you at Year End Convention in Burlington, being held again at the Doubletree Hotel. Our meeting will be held on Saturday June 29.2019. We will be having our Awards Ceremony, electing new Officers for the 2019-2020 Year, and wrapping up what I think has been another success-ful year as the Detachment of Vermont.

We continue to provide excellent service to Veterans, our Children and Youth, and our Communities as we have shown how “The Sons Get It Done”!

Thank you for all that you do!

In Honor of All Veterans,

Steve England

Commander

Detachment of VT S.A.L.

SONS OF THE AMERICAN LEGION DETACHMENT OF VT COMMANDERS PROJECT 2018-2019

THE COMMANDERS PROJECT FOR 2018-2019 IS TO RAISE FUNDS FOR PROGRAMS THAT

DIRECTLY BENEFIT VETERAN PATIENTS AND RESIDENTS AT THE VA FACILITIES IN

WHITE RIVER JCT., VT AND BENNINGTON, VT.

THE SPECIFIC PROGRAMS AT THE WHITE RIVER FACILITY ARE:

Activities through Recreation Therapy funds are used to support inpatient and outpatient outings, therapeutic

supplies and events. Such as but not limited to; creative writing workshops, crafts, horseback riding, day passes

for aqua therapy etc.

We have Unrestricted for Veteran Needs that is used to support basic items not supplied by the VA. Such as but

not limited to; sweatsuits, briefs, t-shirts, socks, basic toiletries that kind of thing.

All donations to the WRJ VAMC are used only for Veterans receiving care at this hospital. We do not send

money to other facilities or Washington, it all stays right here.

THE SPECIFIC PROGRAMS AT BENNINGTON ARE:

Activity Fund provides a wide range of items purchased to meet the social and group needs of our veterans such

as field trips, dances, music, and special programs.

The Donations are tracked by the head of Finance. Any money that comes out of these funds has to be requested

by the Director and signed off by the administrator or CFO and by the head of Finance. It is quite a process but

a good one. All have to be in agreement of how the funds are spent.

Fellow Sons,

Spring is finally here, at least that’s what the calendar says. My snowbanks say otherwise. I write this as many Detachment officers prepare for our upcoming trip to the Unofficial Eastern Region Gathering. This is a time for us to connect with our compatriots from other states. It’s always nice to meet new people, continue friendships and see what the rest of the “Beast of the East” is do-ing. During our trip we’ll have some time to train on different aspects of leadership in the S.A.L., talk about what we do locally and roast and toast our outgoing National Vice Commander East Mike Cotton. I look forward to the comradery and returning with new information.

In the next couple of weeks we’ll be presenting our donation to the Ronald McDonald House. Please consider making a donation to this organization that gives comfort to children and their families going through hard times. We present the donation at 10:00 on Friday April 19

th, please

let me know if you would like to attend. Following this presentation we’ll be making our CWF do-nation in early May. If you make a donation of $1.00 per member you qualify for an emblem from CWF, included in this newsletter is the application.

The Detachment Golf Tournament is fast approaching, if you haven’t registered a team think of doing so. Please try to get out in the community and pick up a hole sponsor, if each Squadron could get one we’d be adding significantly to our scholarship programs. The Tournament is held May 18, the team entry and hole sponsor info is included for your information.

As we inch closer to convention I want to make sure we support Steve in his final months as De-tachment Commander. Let’s make sure we support all the programs of the SAL, especially his Commanders Project. Let’s show him we appreciate all the hard work for the last two years and the years prior. He brought the motto “The Sons Get It Done” forward and I can’t think of a more apt statement.

Lastly I want to thank each of our members for all that they do. We talk about membership being the lifeblood of the organization and VT is a great reminder of that, it’s not always about quantity, quality comes in small packages. Please keep us informed of all the good that you’re doing for Veterans and in your communities.

I hope to see many of you in Barre for our spring DEC meeting at Post 10 on Saturday

April 6th, 2019 at 10:30AM.

Public Relations Updates: There are a number of ways that we can share the great things you are doing! Whether it is supporting our veterans, our children and youth, our local communities, finding new ways to engage our members or even commemorating The Legion’s centennial year we need to get the word out on our great organization. Locally we have our Vermont S.A.L. webpage at http://www.salvermont.com/ and our Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/Sons-of-the-American-Legion-Detachment-of-Vermont-161641794431900/ and nationally we have several other platforms available such as Legion Town http://www.legiontown.org/ , The National Update https://www.legion.org/sons/newsletters , The Legion magazine and the Nation-al website https://www.legion.org/sons or Facebook https://www.facebook.com/americanlegionsons/ pages. If you need help processing an article, please reach out so we can help you.

National Update: I am writing this having just returned from three days in Dover, Delaware at The Eastern Re-gional Unofficial Gathering. Also in attendance from the Vermont S.A.L. DEC were Commander Steve England, Sr. Vice Commander Dave Hendee, Northern Area Commander Jeremy Revell, Southern Area Commander Bill Brothers, NEC John Waite and Windsor County Commander Adam Holden. The team attended Advanced Leadership Training Module #1 together while in Delaware. The training focused on improving individuals communication skills in both written and oral formats. Also while we were in Dover, we were also able to attend the Eastern Regional caucus, the Leading Candidate for National Vice Commander Gary Nelson of New Jersey’s meet and greet and the Testimonial Dinner for outgoing Eastern Regional NVC Mike Cotten of Delaware. It was an incredibly busy weekend but very informative and a great opportunity to share experiences with the other members of the Eastern Region as well as other S.A.L., Legion and Auxiliary members that were in attendance.

In honor of all USA veterans past and present,

From the Desk of the N.E.C & Judge Advocate

Well spring is here finally. Hoping everyone had a good winter. With spring a lot

of activity comes. Children & Youth Month is April make sure if your Squadron is

doing an event that you let us know so we can help you promote it. If your

Squadron has not made a donation to The American Legion Child Welfare

Foundation (CWF) please consider it soon. I’ll be presenting checks from our

Detachment on May 4th in Indianapolis.

On another note membership has been doing well we have gained around 350

new members to this point. The unfortunate part is our renewal rate is down. But

great news there is still time to get those back who have not renewed. We may

not get them all but I know we can get a few. If you need help let me know. Also,

if you aren’t using MySAL.org your squadron is missing out, you can make labels

for all your members that way it’s easier to get notices out to all.

Remember to get your new officers installed, make sure to get them involved so

that you keep an active group.

If you have questions please contact me directly at 802-384-0088 or

Historian’s Report

Good Day, In March, the first two episodes of a newly produced centennial documentary on the history and influence of The American Legion have been released. Developed from National Headquarters, “To Strengthen a Nation” has professional actors, who are also Legionnaires, crisscrossing the country to discover how The American Legion was formed, grew, and serves community, state and nation today. Episodes will be posted monthly or bimonthly between now and the 101st National Convention in Indianapolis in late August. View "To Strengthen a Nation: Prelude" and "Episode 1: Formation of The American Legion" on The American Legion's YouTube channel. The documentary also is available on http://www.legion.org/legiontv under "To Strengthen a Nation." Sons of The American Legion National Commander Greg “Doc” Gibbs congratulates the Legion on a century of service in his own video.

The Vermont (SSN 792) Commissioning Committee was instituted in 2018 by Governor Scott. Their mission is to provide a memorable Commissioning for the ship’s officers, crew, and sponsor Ms. Gloria Valdez; the U.S. Navy; the State of Vermont and its people; and the men and women who built the ship. The ship was “christened” on October 20th, 2018 but will not be commissioned until next year. Of note, this will be the third nuclear submarine with a Vermont namesake, following the USS Ethan Allen (SSBN 608) and USS Montpelier (SSN 765). The Committee will be looking to reach out to our communities to spread word about the USS Vermont and will be participating in the Independence Day celebration along with the crew of the USS Montpelier in Montpelier this year. If you would like to find out more or would like to schedule a time for the commission to attend in your area, please contact Chairperson Debra Martin at [email protected].

Page 10: Volume 7, Issue 8 April 1, 2019salvermont.com/forms_207_2724458291.pdfDelaware. The training focused on improving individuals communication skills in both written and oral formats

The Committee is partnered with The Vermont Teddy Bear Company to offer Dewey Bears in honor of Admiral George Dewey, the only officer of the U.S. Navy ever to hold the rank of Admiral of the Navy. Admiral Dewey was born in 1837 in Montpelier, Vermont and his distin-guished service during the Civil War in 1861 through the Spanish-American War in 1898 resulted in Congress awarding him the rank of Admiral.

Reminder! Sons of The American Legion squadrons are encouraged to enter the annual Snapshots of Service photo contest to promote the Sons’ programs. Submitted photos must rep-resent one of the Four Pillars: Americanism, Children and Youth, National Security, or Veterans Affairs and Rehabil-itation. Members must be wearing SAL caps or apparel, and the photo must be in JPG or TIFF format. Submission forms are available at https://www.legion.org/sons/publications. Squadrons and detachments are also encouraged to share what they’re doing through online platforms includ-ing Legiontown, the Sons’ Facebook page, and the Sons’ website. SPONSORSHIP—S.A.L. Golf Tournament

To reach our goal of contributions to the programs mentioned on the previous page, we are

seeking Corporate and Organizational sponsorships. With this tax deductible contribution, we

will place a sign 2’ x 3’ on one of the holes with your name on it showing your support for Veter-

ans and Children and Youth programs. We also take pictures and make certificates, thanking

you for supporting this tournament.

The cost of sponsoring a hole is as follows:

$300.00 for a hole by yourself

We also except half a hole sponsor ($150.00). You will then share a sign

You are able to put your business name and any special language on your sign (“Thank You Veterans”

or “In Memory of...”)

If you are interested in becoming a sponsor, talk with your Sons of the American Legion member or fill out

the application on the next page
