APT: Early Literacy: It’s More than ABC’s
Early literacy skills begin to develop in the first three years of life. From holding a board book to babbling
when “reading” a favorite book, this training will explore early literacy skills for infants and toddlers. Us-
ing books, hands-on activities, and PBS Kids video clips, participants will gain information to better un-
derstand the importance of early literacy skills for infants and toddlers.

Beyond “I’m Sorry!”: Developing Empathy in Young Children Empathy is the ability to put yourself in the shoes of someone else and understand what they are feeling
or experiencing. This can be taught to infants and toddlers. Developing a sense of empathy is an im-
portant developmental process for young children that can benefit them not only in childhood, but well
into adult life. This training will offer many practical tips and activities to help infants and toddlers de-
velop empathy and understand that others have different thoughts and feelings than they do.

Are you looking for ways to give your infants and toddlers a hand up on development? Why not cross
the line, the midline that is! By setting up activities to get them moving across their bodies, you will
be helping you children develop fine motor, tracking and reading skills as they grow and develop.

STEAM and Preschoolers, a Natural Fit Every day when Preschoolers play, they are exploring or investigating, recognizing problems and
searching for or testing solutions. These are all STEAM skills or concepts which teachers can nurture in
the classroom. The role of the teacher, arranging the environment for STEAM explorations through play,
is important. This training will explore the scaffold of STEAM learning, suggesting common ways for the
Preschool teacher to provide opportunities for the children to engage and build STEAM skills.

A New Year, A Better Center
Sticks and stones can break my bones, but names can surely hurt you. When was the last time you did an evaluation on your center? Are you getting 80% good reviews, or can you use a little help? What does your turnover rate look like? In this class we will discuss classroom setup, and things that make your center run like a well-oiled clock. Activities and scenarios will be performed to help with evaluating your center.

Have you ever wondered why assessments are necessary in childcare or what is the use in doing them? In this training, you will gain a better understanding of why assessments are important for you and the chil-dren. You will also distinguish between the difference in assessments that are available and their use to your
center.

Implicit Biases in Early Childhood Care
All of us have biases- no matter what our profession, no matter where we live, or where we’re from. We
are all exposed to a society that is full of implicit biases, biases of all kinds. In fact, research shows that
while explicit bias has decreased in our country over time, implicit bias has remained stable. And it is
instilled in us at very early ages. So, at the end of the day, the question is not whether or not we have
bias. The question is how we can address it.

Hands on “Playful Math Learning Experiences
Recent studies have shown that a child's math skills upon entering kindergarten can be a strong predictor of her future academic performance in both math and reading throughout the elementary grades. Math learn-ing promotes working memory, improves attention, and increases other basic cognitive skills. Engage pre-schoolers into these playful activities to help them develop a strong foundation in understanding math, that you can implement into your center!

Wee Cook! Have you ever stopped to think how much a child can learn from a cooking experience? With a little extra thought and planning you can make an already fun activity into a deep learning experience. So often when we are planning learning activities, we are focused on one learning area such as “math” or “science”, we forget we can choose activities that incorporate several learning concepts with just one activity. Cooking projects are a great way to do this! Let’s cook!

School-Age
Do You Feel That?
Bouncy, squishy, noisy, and yummy! Messy play is important for young children, giving them endless ways to
develop and learn. All types of play are essential for children’s development and early learning. Sensory play
helps children to develop and improve their gross and fine motor skills, co-ordination and concentration. Also,
how to work cooperatively and collaboratively, use all their senses to discover and explore their environment,
and develop their imagination, creative thinking and ability to problem solve and experiment with solutions.

Building Literacy After School
Many of us are aware that daily reading and literacy activity can enhance vocabulary, increase comprehension
and develop an understanding about story structure, among other skills. While young people practice these
skills throughout the school day, afterschool programs can provide an environment and opportunities to com-
plement these reading and writing practices. The afterschool environment is a great place for young people to
explore their reading and writing interests, cultivating an enjoyment of literacy for life.

Seasons in Science
Let’s get ready to warm up for winter, spring into action to beat the summer heat while enjoying the fall
weather by exploring hands-on experiments that relate to the seasons of the year. These simple science
experiments will promote social, cognitive, and emotional development as well as literacy development
in preschoolers by utilizing PBS KIDS programming, games and children’s books.
Recognizing and Reporting Child Abuse and Neglect in Early Child Care
In this workshop, we will examine the roles and responsibilities of child care providers in preventing, recognizing,
reporting, and responding to child abuse and neglect within the early child care setting. This 2-hour training will
provide an overview of prevention efforts, mandated reporting laws and responsibilities, as well as ways child care
providers can care for and support children exhibiting symptoms of abuse.
Turning Lemons into Lemonade: How Many Lemons Do You Need?
The kitchen can be a fascinating place for children. While watching water boil, cutting up fruits and vegetables or
observing bread rise, children are developing social-emotional, physical and cognitive skills. This training will en-
courage teachers to incorporate simple cooking activities with a focus on developing math skills. With the help of
PBS Kids resources, this training will provide participants with materials and hands-on activities to encourage chil-
dren (and teachers) to measure, weigh and compare ingredients as they cook and taste various foods
Childcare Enhancement with a Purpose program will be offering an up-
coming training on the topic of:
Developmental Milestones
Participants will learn what to expect from children developmentally in all 5 areas of development: so-
cial, emotional, language & communication, cognitive, physical & movement and adaptive.
