This Sunday we vote on the Proposed Church Budget for October, 2013 through September 2014. Printed budget sheets will be available around the building on Sunday. A quick look at the Proposed Budget will show that it is very similar to the current budget. The total amount is the same ($4.1 million) and most of the line items are the same. I do want to give you a brief explanation of two changes that are proposed with the new budget. These proposed changes were developed by the

Leadership Council and then were unanimously approved by the Deacons. A discussion of this budget and these proposed changes was held on Wednesday night, September 11. Sunday we will vote on the Proposed Budget and the included changes that I will mention below.

First, you will notice that the budget line item for Madison Baptist Association has been removed from the Missions section of the budget. Does that mean that we are cutting out our support of the Madison Baptist Association? Not at all! We have simply moved the amount that we previously budgeted for Madison Baptist (1%) and added it to the amount for First Baptist Missions, making FBC Missions now 2%. Instead of an automatic percentage amount going to Madison Baptists, now our Missions Committee will be able to determine each year the best allocation of funds to meet the needs of the Madison Baptist Association as the Missions Committee considers a variety of requests for missions expenditures. The Missions Committee has already determined that the amount for Madison Baptist Association will remain at the current level of $41,000.

The second change that is proposed will actually not show up on the budget sheet. It relates to the missions giving of people who select Cooperative Baptist Fellowship on their offering envelopes. For those who make this designation of their offering, previously the 10% of your gift that goes for missions was divided up in the following way. Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions received 57%, national CBF received 39%, and state CBF received 4%. We have followed this pattern since CBF was founded in 1991. The Leadership Council thinks that a more favorable distribution for those who check CBF on their envelopes would be the following: national CBF would receive 50%, state CBF would receive 20 %, and 30% would go to support the Ministry Entities, Clergy Retirement Plan, and Administration of the Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions. This change will mean that a majority of the funds channeled to CBF will go to CBF ministries while still supporting the ministry entities (such as Baptist colleges and children’s homes) in our state that many want to support.

I am grateful to the Leadership Council for their hard work to develop a wise and purposeful budget for the next year.
