Patricia Jones, who had been CEO of the Civic Arts Plaza for 14 years
and a volunteer for 4 after that, reminded all that it is celebrating its
25th Anniversary. She then introduced the new conductor of the New
West Symphony, Michael Christie, who won a Grammy for Best Opera
Recording, “Revolution of Steve Jobs”. Michael plays trumpet, piano,
and was a singer and dancer in high school musicals. A 2-minute video,
a segment by Spectrum News was shown about Michael’s career.
Michael’s goal was to curate music that will touch peoples’ hearts.
He’s happy to report that the Arts are starting to create a feedback
loop. The Millennial Generation is flocking to the Arts, and they are
seeing a massive generation shift. He referenced Michael Magasinn’s
Inspirational Moment, “Perception”, noting that he has dedicated his
experience to get to know the viewers’ experience from the audience.
Patrick Cassidy, 5-Star Theatrical’s Artistic Director, enthusiastically
spoke about the upcoming 25th’ Anniversary show, and what the Civic
Arts has brought in regard to the Arts, in our community. He sang for
us two songs from the show Music Man, and was followed by Trent
Mills delighting us with his powerful, and hauntingly beautiful rendi-
tion of “Bring Him Home” from Les Miserables.

WORLD POLIO DAY
October 24th
Why do we celebrate a day in the name of polio?
Polio is no joke.
We are polio-free but two countries in the world are not.
And until all are free, polio can still come back.
Pakistan and Afghanistan still need the serum.
When we started in 1988, there were 350,000 cases each year. This year so far there are fewer than 100.
The world needs us to keep funding the science and the serum!
President Gooch opened the meeting. He talked about our upcoming Street Fair, a mere
10 days away. He also mentioned that last week’s speaker, Paul Chappell, will be speaking
at the Rotary Peacebuilders Conference in Ontario the weekend of January 17-18. For
those who missed last week’s program, Herb mentioned that Paul’s presentation can be
seen on YouTube and is well worth a look.
President Gooch introduced Michael Magasinn to present the Inspirational Moment.
Michael is coming up on his 4th Anniversary as a Rotarian. Tim Weaver was his sponsor.
He talked about two important words; 1) Perception and 2) Perspective. He told the
story of several years ago when he was driving in West LA at the speed limit of 25 MPH,
two “senior ladies” told him to SLOW DOWN! It really irked him, as he was driving the
speed limit, and it was slow. He thought about it a lot, and realized that their perception was that he was
speeding. Why was their perception, his problem? The he realized that “Perception” and “perspective”
go hand in hand. You can use them to shape your reality. He chooses to volunteer, as he does with his
increasing involvement with his synagogue and through Rotary. He now asks himself, “How can I help
shape others’ perception and perspective to make this world a better place?”
Joani Pappas led the singing of God Bless America. Kara Buss introduced visiting Rotar-
ians PP Skip Roberts and Mike Hebert. She then introduced Krishing Simon, guest of
Susan Murata; Todd Augustine, guest of Carol Robinson, and Chris Dumford, guest of
Jennifer Strong.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
Christal Doyle, Street Fair Chair, introduced Larry Baker with updates on
vendor status. Larry noted that ast year at this time, we had collected
$77,000 in vendor fees. This year, we’re 100% sold out for retail and non-
retail vendors, have 5-6 available non-profit spaces available, and we’ve
collected $99,000.
We’re anticipating good weather in the 70s and hopefully, no winds.
Ernie Sandlin then discussed volunteer schedules. The chalking crew,
headed by “Chalk Boy” David Masci, will start chalking just before 5:00
am. The earliest crew will be at the site at 4:30 am, hanging banners. Su-
san Murata, Sevak Kodabakhshian, and hopefully, Jason Hardy. Sevak
asked members to contact Jason to be sure he’d be there, as Sevak is a
bit gun shy working at those heights around cables, etc.
The goal is to open the street to vendors at 6:30 am for setup. There will
be set-up crews at every zone, as well as break-down crews from 3:00
– 6:00 pm.
The info booth usually manned at Brazil and Moorpark, will be com-
bined with the barricade information people. This will free-up mem-
bers to work in other areas. There will be another info booth adjacent
to the Rotary Headquarters Tent. Super-heroes will be present, in-
cluding Iron Man and Spider Man.
There will only be one stage this year, so we need enough people to man that area. A new area, where
the Cornhole Tournament will be held, will be supervised by Sharon Renshall. When asked to head up
that area, Sharon asked, “What’s Cornhole?”
Christal enthusiastically announced 30 teams will compete in
the Cornhole Tournament. She also gave special thanks to
K.T. Connor for her work in advertising the event. She added
thanks also to “Darth Baker”, for handling all the vendors,
and all by hand.

Happy $$$$
Sue Engler carried the cup.
Sue Engler said there’s a super typhoon heading towards the Islands and she’s been asked to help.
Barb Cornwall said she went RVing with Patricia Jones a couple weeks ago, and all the woman are jealous
that Patricia drove her 39 foot RV all by herself for the maiden voyage. Although she was completely shak-
en, she did and we were all so proud of her!! Also her oldest son Chris and his wife Megan are having their
third child next April, so the 6th grandchild is on the way.
Sevak Khodabakhshian announced full disclosure: Please call Jason Harding to help with the banners!
Nikki Richardson was relieved and excited that she was able to sit in her brand-new kitchen this morning
after an 11-month renovation project. She was also very happy with the 25th Anniversary celebration of the
Civic Arts Plaza on Oct. 4th. It was a great success. She apologized, however, for introducing Bob Engler,
Councilman, as Bill Engler. He’ll now be known as Billy Bob!
Hugo Roche is thankful he could finally start planning for the next year’s World Series.
Mike Jansen had a wonderful trip to Europe.
Mike Hebert sadly announced the passing of his and Diane’s niece yesterday. She was only 44 years old. He
said he has never seen such incredible strength as her husband showed when he had to tell his 7 and 8
year-old sons their mother had died. He thanked several members of his Rotary family for hosting them
during this sad and important time. They’ll be back to visit at Christmas.
Pat McCoy was having a brief Economic Forecast Committee planning meeting.
A GREAT DISTRICT CONFERENCE !
Matt Lallo managed the club’s display of its big support for
the Conejo Free Clinic and the Tijuana Planetarium . Herb
Gooch, Heather Cousins, Sharon Russell, Jere, KT, Mike
Teasdale, and Bob Biery were all there.

PRESIDENT’S CORNER
Street Fair next Sunday. If you are feeling stressed then try
answering these Unanswered Questions:
1. Ever wonder about those people who spend $2.00 apiece on those
little bottles of Evian water? Try spelling Evian backwards: NAÏVE
2. Isn't making a smoking section in a restaurant like making a peeing
section in a swimming pool?
3. OK..... so if the Jacksonville Jaguars are known as the "Jags" and the
Tampa Bay Buccaneers are known as the "Bucs," what does that make the Tennessee Titans?
4. If 4 out of 5 people SUFFER from diarrhea...does that mean that one enjoys it?
5. There are three religious truths:
a. Jews do not recognize Jesus as the Messiah.
b. Protestants do not recognize the Pope as the leader of the Christian faith.
c. Baptists do not recognize each other in the liquor store or at Hooters.
6. If people from Poland are called Poles, why aren't people from Holland called Holes?
7. Do infants enjoy infancy as much as adults enjoy adultery?
8. If a pig loses its voice, is it disgruntled?
9. Why do croutons come in airtight packages? Aren't they just stale bread to begin with?
Why is a person who plays the piano called a pianist but a person who drives a racecar is not
called a racist?
10. Why isn't the number 11 pronounced onety one?
11. If lawyers are disbarred and clergymen defrocked, doesn't it follow that electricians can be de-
lighted, musicians denoted, cowboys deranged, models deposed, tree surgeons debarked, and
dry cleaners depressed?
12. If Fed Ex and UPS were to merge, would they call it Fed UP?
13. Do Lipton Tea employees take coffee breaks?
14. What hair color do they put on the driver's licenses of bald men?
15. I was thinking about how people seem to read the Bible a whole lot more as they get older;
then it dawned on me .....they're cramming for their final exam.
16. Why do they put pictures of criminals up in the Post Office? What are we supposed to do, write
to them? Why don't they just put their pictures on the postage stamps so the mailmen can look
for them while they deliver the mail?
17. If it's true that we are here to help others, then what exactly are the others here for?
18. You never really learn to swear until you learn to drive.
