for the Society is Sally

and new). Ask her about

them.

President Peter Willson

Our Annual General Meeting and election of Committee is on

Monday 18th March. As at todays date we have a good indication of

existing committee people willing to stay committed to managing our

organistation.

Many people are excellent contributors without being on the

committee. Without naming them - you know who they are - even

those who hound me for tickets.

Some new Committee people are needed to help manage our

Orchid Society into the future. We want to encourage new people to

become involved and learn the ropes slowly. One or two new

committee people to gradually gain committee knowledge and with

experienced hands, will help our Society's forward planning.

Sarcochilus Presentation

Jim Smith will discuss and demonstrate care, culture and repotting of

this orchid at our February meeting. Sarcochilus are native orchids to

eastern Australia. In nature they grow on branches of trees or on rocks

virtually in the absence of soil.

Lithophytic (rock loving plants) are easily cultivated in pots and you will

gain knowledge on growing media options and pot size options. Also, if

you have a problem SARC plant bring it to the meeting and ask advice

from an experienced grower. These culture demonstrations are where

we call all learn.

Newsletter

From the changeover of Editor, in the year 2018, Peter Manchester has

successfully travelled a challenging path. Peter has regularly included

articles to help you with your orchid growing culture and his dedication

and research in producing our monthly newsletter publication with

articles that make you think, is greatly appreciated by the majority. In

many of his articles he has invited your feedback.

I hope he will continue being our Newsletter Editor for the next twelve

months.

The listings are BASIC cultural information for our HOBART area. It is stressed that the

information contained in these charts is to be used as a brief, basic guide depending on your own

particular environment. Growing conditions vary from grower to grower depending on many

factors, eg type of housing, potting medium, local weather conditions and the area where you live.

Should you require more detailed information on any particular cultural aspect, it is suggested you

seek the advice of advanced orchid members of TOS or a specialist orchid nursery.

T.O.S. Sunday 27th January Get together… at the

residence of Glenn Durkin and Virginia Byers.

About 24 members arrived to a sunny but “smoke” filled day to a beautiful suburban abode

opposite Gould’s Lagoon on the shore of the Derwent River , just near Granton.

Glenn has two main hobbies – breeding and showing canaries and growing and showing cool

temperate orchids.

Glenn’s growing conditions, like many members have environmental conditions that are

different to most other growers. Glenn is definitely a man with builders\’s skills and ability

because the orchid and bird structures were built and designed by him in a way that is

compatible with the Granton environment. Two area occur – his larger shade house is mainly

for growing cymbidiums ( faces eastwards) and attached to this is a small narrow shade house

where he grows his other species , such as sarcohilus, masdevallias, oncidiums, dendrodiums –

to name a few. All plants seemed to be grouped, organised and … almost clinical !!! ( sorry

Glenn).

A few detailed observations were

The shade house is covered in 50% white shade cloth. It has a frost resistant “pull along

blind”along the roof lines.

Orchids are on horizontal benches with wire meshes.

The floor is coveres in coarse red lava like rocks This helps the humidity.

Glenn has “computer – size fans” powered by a solar panel on the roof facing the East.

He monitors the temperature and humidity conditions using digital probes and senses.

A well designed single vent on the rear roof that helps air flow.

A watering system on a timing mechanism with the opportunity to mist and general

watering.

Outside he places many of his cymbidiums in shaded areas under the trees..

After viewing the orchids and the canaries “motel/hotel, members were treated to almost a banquet

afternnon tea – wow -. Although conversation was at a high level, but at times it was reduced by

full mouths of “high tea” food.

The Society and organisers wish sincerely to thank Virginia and Glenn on

a most successful and informative afternoon about their orchid growing

facilities and indebted to their wonderful hospitality and friendship.

It has been brought to my notice that Sunday get togethers are not only visits to

members orchid growing facilities but can also be mini workshops. There will be no

getogether in February but a mini workshop at Legacy House in March.

DID you KNOW ?Orchids are the largest family of plants in the world.

With 30,000 known species, you could acquire a different orchid every day for eighty

years and still not grow them all.

So what is a Catasetum?

Fred Clarke sent the St. Augustine Orchid Society of Northen Florida in the USA. 20

plugs of this new hybrid, Ctsm. Portagee Star 'Brian Lawson's Sunrise' x Ctsm. Lucis

Catasetum is the largest genus of the subtribe and grows in a variety of conditions. Many grow in the

warm, moist open canopy of trees but there are a number that are happiest in the "boot" of palm trees.

The boot of the palm trees is the base of old leaves that have been shed. Some species can be found on

rocks, terrestrially and even in sand. Most of the Catasetum species are like Cycnoches in growth

pattern. 11
