The SIMPLE IRA plan –If you’re self-employed or own a small business, you may be able to establish a savings incentive match plan for employees (SIMPLE) IRA plan. A SIMPLE IRA plan is a salary reduction retirement plan for certain small business that is established in the form of employee-owned traditional individual retirement accounts (but with a higher contribution level). Establishing such a retirement plan can provide you with a tax-advantaged way to save funds for your retirement; it may also help you attract and retain qualified employees. An EAGLE among us has flown upward to Heaven … His name is WARREN CRAIG TRAWEEK, born May 22, 1942, in Dallas, Texas. Monday, March 31, 2014, was his time of flight about 11

o’clock a.m. Wife Cleta of nearly 50 years, sons Brian Craig and Bradley Warren held a small memorial service at the Ray Blair Airport this past Saturday. For all who have contacted the family via cards, phone,

or attended the memorial, the family wishes to thank you and

convey that you are very appreciated. Traweek grandchildren are Claire Morgan, Adam Parker, Sam Mason, David Carson and Ruby. Tri-Community may know him as the “taller younger brother” of Jack Traweek of San Manuel, and uncle of Parrish Craig Traweek, of PC Aircraft. Warren and Cleta keep a house in San Manuel, as well as their 40-year residence in Tucson. Both sons were born at San Manuel Clinic Hospital, 1972 and 1974, when the couple lived at 503 Avenue D, a company house then owned by Magma Copper.

Warren Craig Traweek Both sons have been exemplary in their educational and career pursuits following their separate near-death episodes in their early childhood years. The Tri-Community came together to support this small family in a huge way during those traumatic times and Warren and Cleta are forever grateful. Warren served in Vietnam as a Huey B-model helicopter Crew Chief, D company, 227th Aviation Battalion, 1st Air Cavalry Division. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Purple Heart. Warren earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Commercial Design at the University of Arizona, and completed some hours of Graduate work as well. Warren’s career path included: • MAGMA COPPER – Ventilation Engineer• ARIZONA STATE MINE INSPECTOR• FEDERAL MINE SAFETY & HEALTH ADMINISTRATION (MSHA) National Special Investigator• DUVAL and WESTERN AG MINERALS, Corporate Safety Coordinator / Mine Production Superintendent at Carlsbad, NM. • WESTERN STATES POTASH INDUSTRY REPRESENTATIVE TO WASHINGTON, D.C.• ASARCO, Hayden, Arizona – Director of Safety and Health• BHP COPPER, San Manuel – Corporate Safety and Health Director (Global travel) Warren’s career and exploratory travels took him around the globe, including Africa, Australia, South America, Europe, Canada, Alaska Yukon, and the Arctic Circle. Warren’s favorite country, where he wished to take wife Cleta, was Peru. Hobbies included Sport Aviation, as owner of Vintage airplanes hangared at San Manuel Ray Blair Airport. Warren has always been the “artist”, having provided the letterhead art and checkbook illustration for the mining companies of which he was employed. He daily worked with various mediums of pen/ink, acrylics or oils at his home or when traveling after his long days of work. Warren will undoubtedly “fly over” oftentimes, and as an unknown quote of an artist says: “Each life is an unfinished work of art … completed only when returned to the loving hands of our Creator”. A celebration of life was held Saturday, April 5, at the San Manuel Airport.

Welcome to Barcelo Ville. I will try to address the articles that have been submitted to the Miner in the last few weeks by officials of the Town of Mammoth. Miner issue, Wednesday, March 5, 2014, Patsy Large the Town clerk/manager. 1. The Town clerk states that she submitted her letter of resignation, but decided to stay after at least four Council members asked her to continue as acting Town clerk/manager. Her resignation was set for December 13, 2013. There are four elected Council members and three hand picked. I know of two elected council members that did not ask her to stay, so, that leaves a possible count of five. One of the hand picked Council members did not ask her to stay. Wow! There have not been any ads posted for a new Town Clerk, If she is only working on a day-to-day basis, don’t you think that the Town leaders should prepare in case the Town clerk/manager decides “Today is my last day.”? Remember, her resignation took effect December 13, 2013 (last year) and nothing has been brought to the Council meetings to let her work on a day-by-day basis. 2. The Town clerk/manager says she was called and reported for work within a couple of hours. Sounds prearranged to me. She did not put in writing how happy we all were when the results for the last recall came in. 3. The Transparency Issue. The transparency issue is clearly misunderstood and that there has been no attempt to hide business that the Town conducts. Why did the Mayor decide to quit giving receipts of any kind to the Council, so that they could check on all of the expenditures? I go to the Town Hall and ask for the receipts and/or ledgers, and, I am charged per copy, and, am an elected Councilman. No one wants to go to the Town Hall to ask for information, because, they know what happens. You end up in court, after being cursed at. She has cursed at me for calling the Auditor and filing complaints with the Attorney General. I am not the only person she has cursed at. The salaried employees, and, some of the hourly employees, believe that they can curse anybody, any time. It is a cancer that started with the Public Works Director, spread to his employees and, now, the Town clerk/manager. 4. The audit and/or audits. The forensic audit was finally agreed to, but, of course, it never came to pass. The regular audit has never been completed. I called the auditor and asked why we had no report. He was waiting on a list of items from the clerk/manager that she

Councilman Brewer expresses concern over town happeningswould not send him. Still no completed audit, yet, she claims we have a yearly audit, also. I haven’t seem them and, I’ll bet you haven’t, either. Since she has been here, the Town has purchased two sets of computers. Once, because she said the old computers were erased, and, the second set because the computers would not start properly. Where are the computers that were replaced, and, where are the files that were in them? How simple: lose the computers and the files; who can prove any wrong doing? 5. The Traveler. I received a letter from him, as did all the Council. I called him and apologized profusely. I asked if it would be okay

to submit it to the Miner on his behalf, and, he agreed, and, thank me for caring. Why, I ask, didn’t the Mayor bring this to the open meeting, so we could find a resolution to this disgraceful treatment of our tourist? I know: transparency! 6. Developers. Developers are looking at Mammoth, to build housing and a strip mall. Okay developers: I ask, who owns the well and/or property on the sites to be developed, and, what happened to the Cielo project? 7. Grants. Grants are coming in, but, how is the grant money going to be used, and, who is going to be paid? I know, in the past, that

A group of 43 kids and adults from Livermore, Calif. were in Oracle this week helping clean up the Oracle Cemetery. Members of the Praying Pelican Mission and the Cedar Grove Community Church

A group of volunteers has taken on the task of iden-tifying unmarked graves, cleaning up, and maintaining the Oracle Cemetery. Gloria

and Reg Ramsay have been involved in keeping up the cemetery for years. They are now working with other volunteers to gather a list of everyone known to be buried in the Oracle Cemetery. There are many unmarked graves

including those of what appear to be infants or children. The members of the Oracle Cem-etery Identification Project are trying to find out who is buried in unmarked graves and identify those whose headstones have been worn

The AIA released its first rankings, or “seedings,” and statistical leaders of the season last week. Several teams and players from the Copper Corridor are among the state’s leaders. San Manuel (1st ), Superior (2nd), and Ray (5th) occupy three of the top five spots in the Division IV softball state seedings. In baseball, San Manuel (4th) and Ray (6th) take up two of the top six teams in Division IV. The top 24 teams qualify for the state playoffs. As of Apr. 7, Superior’s

seeding was 21st. If the playoffs started today, the Panthers would qualify. Several softball players are ranked at, or near, the top of several statistical categories and are broken down by school: Ray – Stormee Galka (ERA, HR, Runs, Stolen Bases, K’s, and Wins), Savannah Willis (Catching and Stolen Bases), and Lucy Sainz (Stolen Bases). Superior – Hunter Flanagan (Batting Avg.) and Ivie Lopez (Wins). San Manuel – Lyana Waddell (ERA, K’s, and Wins), Alyssa Cuellar (HR), and Felicia Medina (RBI, Runs, and SLG Pct.).

The Miners’ softball team is ranked first in Division IV, according to the AIA website, and is playing like it on the field. The Miners won all three games they played last week by a combined score of 33 – 2. They defeated Ft. Thomas (19 – 0), San Carlos (11 – 0), and 5th-ranked Ray (3 – 2). The Miners have now won 12 games in-a-row and suffered their last loss over a month ago, on March 8, 2014, against

Flagstaff. Against San Carlos, Player of the Game Nicole Encinas went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a stolen base. Felica Gomez was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Lyana Waddell pitched four innings for the win. She shutout the Braves on one hit and struck out six. Waddell, who is ranked at or near the top of most statistical pitching categories, was relieved by Angela Navarro in the fifth. Upcoming schedule: Apr. 10 @ Tombstone, Apr. 11 vs. Pima, Apr. 16 @ Superior. All games begin at 4:00 p.m.

Team Taylor took top honors again at last Saturday’s Knights of Columbus Charity GolfTournament at Saddlebrooke Ranch Golf Club. The tournament benefits local high school scholarships, as well as other education projects. Steve, Paul, Bruce and Bekki Taylor finished with a 55, three

Dan Rusiecki, Mike Munich, Bill Hooks and Joe Volk won a round of golf for four be-cause their card was drawn from the teams that did not place in the top three slots. A hallmark of the local KofC tournament is a great prize going to an unpredictable team.

Local teams take top three spots in annual Knights golf tourneygratified to see teams coming from so many places,” said tournament director John Wahlmeier. Teams came from Globe and Kearny as well as from the oldest KofC Council in Tucson, Council 1200, on south Tucson Boulevard and the Roy Champeau Council near Shannon and McGee according to Wahlmeier. “I hope golfers put us on their calendars for next year too,” Wahlmeier said. “We have our tournament the first Saturday each April, and we always have a lot of fun helping local kids,” he added.

The official announcement was made during the April 1 Fire Board meeting when Chief Larry Southard presented Robert with his badge and congratulated him on his promotion. A group of local artists have planned a community art project that is a fundraiser, learning and creative experience as well as an expression of peace. The public art installation will create an army of “Peace Warriors.” The idea is for community members to come together and create a band of terracotta soldiers that will stand in a field overlooking and guarding the Catalina Mountains. These unfired terracotta soldiers will stand watch until they eventually, slowly melt back into the earth. The concept for the terracotta soldiers was inspired by the discovery of the first Chinese Emperor Quin Shi Huang’s burial ground. Quin Shi had a terracotta army of 8,000 life size sculptures plus terracotta horses, chariots and real weapons entombed with him at his death around 210 – 209 B.C.. The terracotta army was discovered in 1974 by farmers. Archaeologists then began excavating the site.

Oracle art installation celebrates the Art of Peace The idea of using the project as an expression of peace came from a woman who became known as the Peace Pilgrim. Mildred Norman Rider became known as Peace Pilgrim when she began walking across North America in 1953. She vowed to walk until mankind has learned the way of peace. She walked until given shelter and fasted until given food while spreading her message of peace. She wandered from 1953 until 1981 when she died in an automobile accident while on her way to a speaking engagement. She touched many lives and hearts during her journey of over 25,000 miles trusting people to give her shelter and food. Most of the artists working in the project have a connection with the Peace Pilgrim in some way or knew someone who had a connection to her. For Carol Mahoney the connection began in a book store. ABC Books was a store in Denver, Colorado owned by Carol. Her mother Gerry Magnie worked there. Many customers came in the store and asked for books about or by the Peace Pilgrim. They finally ordered some and were so touched by the message in the book they organized an annual Peace Walk which was held every October. The Peace Pilgrim’s message continues to inspire people around the world. No experience is necessary to participate and artists of all levels are welcome. Everyone will be able to personalize their sculptured soldier starting with a clay impression of their own face. Each participant will be given a 25 pound bag of terracotta clay. Five Arizona sculptors will give a demonstration on how to build the figures and will help guide you along the way. The five sculptors are Sharon Brady, Fox McGrew, Julie Stein, Carol Goldberg and Danielle Neibling. There will also be live music performed by John Magnie of the New Orleans band “Subdudes.” The fee for participating in the community art project is $60. There is no charge for observers. The profit from the event will

grant monies have been received, but, the money was not used for the specified purpose. Maybe that is another reason no financial records are given to the Council or the public. More transparency! 8. Recall. A recall is coming, and, it is going to cost money; but, to save money, all they have to do is resign. One of the persons being recalled stated that “If they get 82 signatures on me, I’ll resign.” You know who that is, because of all the boasting; but, no resignation. No credibility, no transparency, and, no work of honor. Miner issue Wednesday, March 12, 2014. The Mayor’s Wife. First, I would like to commend the Mayor’s wife for supporting her husband. Behind every good man is a good or better woman; unfortunately, it also works in the opposite. She says Alvaro has been in the office for 22 years. That, in itself, is quite an accomplishment. Wow, 22 years! 1. She said that her daughter worked for the town, before any interviews were taken. That ought to tell you something. Explain to me what a dental technician has to do with a government clerk working with financial ledgers. 2. Her daughter’s boyfriend went to talk to the Public Works Director for a job.I wonder how that went? Let’s take a wild guess. “My name is so and so, and, I am the Mayor’s daughter’s boyfriend, and I need a job to help them out with child support.” and, etc. 3. Attacking the Catholic Church. She goes on to attack the Catholic Church for helping the Seniors that were kicked out of the Community Center, and, not allowed to use the facilities free. The Senior group that the Mayor created is allowed to use it free of charge. Why can’t all Senior groups use the Community Center free of charge? 4. If the Mayor is replaced. Come on! Miner issue March 19, 2014 Vice Mayor 1. The Vice Mayor states that she was getting involved in getting the Dollar General here in town. Maybe, someone should look at the records. 2. Water drainage on Vine. Again, she was instrumental in her water drainage system on Vine. This time, she was absolutely correct. She was the reason the water drainage system had to be put in. 3. She also stated that the Council voted on a meat market next to the Michoacanas Restaurant. The Council actually voted for the meat market on the 20th of March, after the Miner came out. That means, they agreed in a secret meeting, well before she wrote her article. 4. Remember her words. If someone asks what you have done in your life, hold your head up hight and be proud to let your heart speak the truth. What has happened here in Mammoth? Here is a short summary of what has been happening. They continuously talk about how beautiful the town is looking, with the sidewalks, but, they never talk about how much they are costing. If you have had sidewalks placed in front of your property, then, you may have an idea of the cost. 1. How many employees were used to dig up and level for the sidewalks and curbs? 2. How many employees were used to mix, haul, pour and finish the cement? 3. How many weeks or months did it take to complete your street? Actually, it would be a lot cheaper and faster to buy ready mix and pour a truckload at a time. 4. The Town purchased property for the R.O. The property was purchased and the (temporary employee) person was hired to clean the place with a weed eater. Next, the Town went in with heavy equipment to level the place out, cement foundation and all.I guess the heavy equipment could not cut down the weeds, or, why would they hire someone to weed the

property? 5. Now, what do they do with all of the dirt, weeds, foundation and all the garbage. They start another landfill at the bottom of Mcfarland. Now there are two landfills here in town; one on the old cement plant, and, one on Mcfarland. 6. Grants have been given to Mammoth for sidewalks and curbing, in the past, and were never used for the specific reason. One grant was given for sidewalks and curbs 1st through 5th streets. The sidewalks and curbs stopped once the Mayor got his. Take a look for yourself. Oh, the Mayor’s brother has sidewalk and curbing, also, but, I believe his will serve as a ramp for the water to flood his property out during the rainy season. Isn’t it funny how they get whatever they want, and, to heck with the neighbors? You all know how they set me up to be publicly ridiculed, defamed and slandered; but, of course, I proved them liars. I have never loaned money for 100 percent interest. I do not live

with a married woman whose husband works for the town. I have never had my foster care license taken from me for improprieties, and, I have never stripped my spouse’s banking accounts because of what I did. I will not mention what this person did, unless I am forced to. It is too vulgar. Closing note. None of the above bragged about losing a grant because they did not or could not do the work that the previous Vice Mayor did. Yes, the recall is coming, and, I, also, ask that you come to the meetings and ask questions about your money. You will be denied the right to participate, even though our town ordinances give you the right. They can blow their horn ‘til the cows come home, but, it will do them no good. I want to say thank you, to all who support this recall. Thank you, /s/ Joseph S. Brewer

to map the cemetery and give each gravesite a GPS number. Each grave that is identified will be given a number. There will be stakes driven into the gravesite with temporary markers and if the deceased is identified their name will be added to the marker and map. The map will be located in the roofed rock structure at the entrance of the cemetery. This will make it easier for friends and relatives of the deceased to find the grave. It will also

assist genealogists and histori-ans in their research. Noted historical author Catherine Ellis has been help-ing to identify gravesites and researching death records to find out who is buried in the cemetery. She said the history of the cemetery is interesting. In the 1880s through the early 1900s, people who died in Oracle were buried in Tucson at Holy Hope or Evergreen cemeteries or had their bodies shipped to other parts of the

country or Mexico where they were originally from. The first known person to be buried in the area that is now known as the Oracle Cemetery was Andres Castillo in 1911. He was a Mexican working for Lavinia Steward. His body was found on a trail in Oracle. Steward took care of the burial arrangements and purchased the headstone. Soon others began to bury family members in the area. It may have not been a deeded cemetery at the time as town site problems had not been settled. The Cemetery Grave Identifi-cation Project needs help from the public. They are asking anyone that knows who is bur-ied in an unmarked grave or in a grave with an unreadable headstone to write the name on the temporary marker. If you disagree with the name that is on a temporary marker please let them know by call-ing Gloria Ramsay 520-896-2505 or Cathy Ellis 520-896-3226.

The Arizona National Sce-nic Trail is an 800 mile plus continuous recreational trail that stretches from Mexico to Utah. The trail links mountains, deserts, forests, canyons, historical sites, com-munities and people. The Arizona Trail Association is a member non-profit organiza-tion that works to maintain and promote the trail. Their mission is to develop public awareness, education and support for the Arizona Trail; encouraging and coordinat-ing management of the trail; and creating an organization to achieve the vision and mis-sion. The Arizona Trail is in need of public support. The Arizona Trail Associa-tion is currently involved in a fundraising campaign to support the future of the Ari-

zona National Scenic Trail. The funds will go toward trail maintenance and protection; repairing segments of trail damaged by wildfire and ero-sion; installation of steel gates that keep motorized vehicles off the trail; and map printing and distribution. The cam-paign is called the Arizona Trail Trek and is a celebration of the trail and connecting Gateway Communities one step at a time with a goal of raising $20,000. The Arizona Trail Trek involves an Arizona Trail As-sociation member hiking the entire 800 miles while stop-ping in 14 Gateway Commu-nities along the trail for com-munity events. The through hike is an interactive hike which began March 14 and is expected to be completed May 31. It also includes se-lected hikes and backpacking trips along highlighted areas

of the trail and on-the-trail updates by Sirena Dufault who not only will be talking the talk about the Arizona Trail but she is walking the walk, all 800 plus miles. Sirena Dufault is the Gate-way Community Liaison for the Arizona Trail Association. She is also an avid hiker and backpacker. Sirena also has fibromyalgia, a chronic pain illness which she contracted in 1997 after being hit by a car. She was bedridden for a while but found that being out in the sun and hiking helped with the pain. She has not had a flare up in 10 years. In 2008-2009, she did a sec-tion hike of the Arizona Trail to help raise awareness bout fibromyalgia. Sirena was in Oracle Sunday, April 6 for one of the Gateway Community events. The event was at El Rancho Robles. There was live music, food

courtesy of the Patio Café and Arizona Trail Ale pro-vided by “That Brewery” of Pine, Ariz. Both of these busi-nesses are partners with the Arizona Trail Association and help support and promote it. Sirena was there answering questions about the Trek and promoting the Arizona Na-tional Scenic Trail, Gateway Communities and the new Arizona Trail Guidebook. Sirena said she was excited to be back in the Copper Cor-ridor area. “It is like a second home to me,” she said. She has spent a lot of time work-ing with the Copper Corridor Economic Development Co-alition. She said that this part of the trail is “really spec-tacular”. Sirena was the Trail Steward for Passage 16c, and was responsible for maintain-ing a 5.5 mile section along the Gila River. She has built relationships with people in the Gateway Communi-ties and enjoys working with them promoting the Arizona Trail and tourism in the area. The Trek has generated in-terest among the public and organizations such as the Ari-zona Office of Tourism, Pinal County, and Arizona High-ways Magazine. Twenty-eight hikers joined her at the start of the Trek at the Mexican border. Forty people signed up to hike with her in Tucson.

“It has been fantastic!” “It is an amazing experience,” Si-rena said. The hardest part of the hike has been on days when she felt tired and did not want to hike but because she knew she had a schedule to keep, she would force herself to continue. Once walking on the trail, she was fine. She said she feels good and re-laxed now. She has completed one-fourth of the trail. Sirena is scheduled to be in Kearny at Old Time Pizza from 5 to 8 p.m. on April 11 and in Su-

perior at Porter’s Café from 5 to 8 p.m. on April 15. You can follow Sirena’s adventures on the trail on her blog: desertsi-rena.wordpress.com. Join her on the trail or at a Gateway Community event.
