I am so grateful to all the Rabbi and Cantor colleagues of mine throughout the coun- try that have so willingly joined together to help each other move forward through a new and strange worship medium. I have been so buoyed by them.

    Hope in the New Year

This past week, as the year was coming to a close, I had the great joy to officiate at a baby naming and a wedding all in the same day! Now, this is very unusual! What a joy it was! Looking at the innocence in the little one’s face, the twinkling eyes and the laughter and seeing the love between the bride and groom that seemed to encompass them in a soft glow, made my torn heart heal. New hope was reborn in my soul. Both ceremonies were outside with facemasks and social dis-tancing, of course. Both were under huge trees that stood stately as a backdrop to the proceedings. And for both cere-monies, the birds were out in full plumage squawking and join-ing into the joy that was evident on everyone’s faces, even under a mask! What an absolutely wonderful way to end this year of 2020.

Yes, our lives go on despite the great difficulties so many have faced during this pandemic. People get married and have babies. We all have found ways to survive and even thrive. I have learned so much this year in preparing for a vir-tual synagogue truly without walls! With endurance and resili-ency, the congregation of Temple Israel has stayed together. That is most evident in our Zoom Services, the High Holy Day offerings on YouTube, the numerous life cycle events shared in my Zoom room and the wonderful and clever way our Reli-gious School teachers have found ways to stimulate and teach our children our traditions and heritage. I am so grateful to all the Rabbi and Cantor colleagues of mine throughout the coun-try that have so willingly joined together to help each other move forward through a new and strange worship medium. I have been so buoyed by them.

Above all, it is the people, this holy community of caring and loving con-

gregants that have adapted, loved, and nurtured each other through these diffi-

cult times. We have much to look forward to with hope in our hearts. Our beau-

tiful building is almost ready to receive us. We are having Bar Mitzvah ceremo-

nies, teaching the children, caring for the sick and bereaved, bestowing Hebrew

names on little ones and marrying couples in love. We are singing together on

Friday nights and learning the intricacies of our ancient Torah every Saturday

Morning. We are reading books together and sharing our feelings about them.

We soon will begin unpacking and while we do that, we will unpack all the

dreams and prayers that we hold in our hearts for the future of Temple Israel.

Let us look to this secular New Year with the hope brought to us through

our connection to the Holy One of all Blessings. Let us rejoice in all our connec-

tions and may the New Year bring us, above all, freedom from fear and whole-

ness of body, mind and spirit.

    Loving Blessings,

    Rabbi Pat

    President’s Message for January 2021

Blessings to you all and my fervent wishes for a Happy & Healthy New Year to you and your loved ones! My name is Mike Slotkin and I will serve as Temple President for the next two years, taking over from Larry Fineberg who did an amazing job. Since I am relatively new to Temple Israel, let me tell you a little bit about myself. I have been a member of the congregation since 2016; for-merly, I was a congregant and President of Mateh Chaim in Palm Bay. I am also an Executive Board Member and former President of the Jewish Federation of Brevard. For my day job, I am a Profes-sor of Economics in the College of Business at Florida Tech.

To say that 2020 was an eventful year would be a huge understatement. But it’s over now, and the arrival of newly approved vaccines gives us all hope that normalcy will soon return to our lives. As it is with our lives, so it is with our Temple. The construction period has ended and the moving-in period has begun. Over the ensuing weeks, the placement and layout of our storage items will oc-cur, and we’ll have a clear picture of the look of our new classrooms, social hall, and sanctuary. I’m really excited about this new beginning, and I know others feel likewise. We will proceed with cau-tion, however, in terms of in-building gatherings. No need to slip up at this late date and then feel regret for the rest of our lives.

As you are all aware, Rabbi Hickman will retire as our spiritual leader this summer. Even though I have only been a member of Temple Israel for 4 years, I have known Rabbi Pat for much longer. She was always a friend to the Federation, and did amazing work with our Yom HaShoah Remem-brance. She has been a wonderful spiritual leader for Temple Israel, serving as both Rabbi and Cantor, our teacher and friend, and someone who was always there for us, in the best of times as well as our darkest hours . The next six months will be a special time for all of us so let’s enjoy and appreciate these precious moments together.

While Rabbi Pat is transitioning from a rabbinical leadership role, she will remain vocationally ac-tive and will always be part of us – pending Board approval at our upcoming meeting, she will be honored with the title Rabbi Emerita. She will be the first Rabbi in Temple Israel’s 50+ year history with that title, which is well-deserved !

With respect to the search for our new Rabbi, the process has begun, with activity (resume review, interviews, etc.) expected to pick up during the next two months. As developments occur, the Search Committee, chaired by Jeff Fishkin, will be sure to file timely updates for the benefit of the congregation . At the appropriate time, we will also be exploring having prospective candidates lead remote services so that our congregants can observe them at this core function. Once again, it’s early in the process, with more information forthcoming as the search unfolds.

One item that you’ll hear repetitively from me is the movement towards automatic online payments for Temple dues and other synagogue financial obligations. For our new Temple to remain in good working condition, there are some changes to the way we operate which need to be enacted. Because our Temple is a Family, we forget that it’s also a business, but unless we take care of the nickels and dimes, this gorgeous new building will depreciate quicker than anyone would like.

Please help us by utilizing ShulCloud to meet your Temple obligations in the same way you pay your FPL, cable, or phone bill. The regularity in payments, savings in labor-time, and predictability in cash-flow are all vital to ensuring that our new building thrives. If needed, the office can assist you in setting up an automatic payment method through ShulCloud. Just contact Jacob Eichen-baum, our Office Administrator, at [email protected], or by leaving a message at 321-631-9494, extension 101.

I’ll end this note by including a picture from Brian Winsten’s Bar Mitzvah on December 5, 2020. I’m sure in December 2019, neither Brian nor his family anticipated a Bar Mitzvah in quite this fashion; nevertheless, our lives move forward, the event was beautiful, and Brian did a stupendous job. The grace in which Brian and all our students and young people are handling the unfairness of this Covid-era is something to behold.

    Blessings to you in 2021,

    Mike Slotkin, President

Nothing short of amazing." ―Entertainment Weekly

A million-dollar Chagall is stolen from a museum during a singles' cocktail hour. The un-likely thief, former child prodigy Benjamin Ziskind, is convinced that the painting once hung in his parents' living room. This work of art opens a door through which we discover his family's startling history―from an orphanage in Soviet Russia where Chagall taught to suburban New Jersey and the jungles of Vietnam.

ALL Temple members are welcome to attend, and to suggest books. Currently we are meeting on the

third Thursday of the month. Please RSVP to Diana van den Boogaard at [email protected], or

Rabbi Hickman at [email protected], so that we can send you the Zoom link.

Sponsor a Virtual Oneg now or reserve your date for 2021. Contact WTI Treasurer Rose Schoenfeld at 321

-622-6454, or [email protected]. Make a $40 donation to WTI for a specific Shabbat ser-

vice. Join the service on Zoom and light the candles. Rabbi Hickman will work out the details and you will

be honored for contributing the Oneg. We will have a colorful illustration of the virtual foods you want to

    share.

    Dear Rabbi Hickman:

First, thank you for your friendship and spiritu-

al counsel to Sara Jane following Marty’s sud-

den death. I hope she’ll come to you if necessary,

as she journeys thru her grief.

I am hopeful that my memorial money for Marty

can be used in some way toward your music pro-

gram – next to his love for Sara and travel, mu-

sic was pretty high on his list.

Your service was so tender and loving. I’m cer-

tain it helped family and friends start to bring

    closure from Marty’s unexpected death.

    Prayers and regards

    Dear Rabbi Pat:

I have moved often. I have been a member at orthodox synagogues, Con-servative and Reform. You are the first woman Rabbi that I have had. You are also the best. I know we need to encourage young, brave and strong women to take this life purpose on…
