Over his objections the application was marked Seventh grade English and he was hired on the spot. Standing 6’3”, and still almost as fit as during his ship’s mechanics days in the Navy, my dad met the primary qualification for a position which would mean enforcing discipline in the particularly unruly class that would eventually graduate in 1970. The next year, the Eighth grade Social Studies position was filled with a 6’4” Marine Corps veteran. For the next thirty years, my father and Ed McChesney towered over the west upstairs hall of the building, and rabble rousers learned to mind their p’s & q’s. For all of the authority given to him as a 7th grade schoolteacher, my father under- stood that each year he was presented with a new group of students, almost all of whom had been together for several years. And something he learned about teaching 11-13 year-old children is largely true about pastoring congregations as well. It is the teacher’s classroom, and the pastor’s pulpit, and it is the students’ class and the people’s congregation and it is the partnership between them which makes the school a place of learning and the church a community of disciples in service to God’s word. As I come to you as your new pastor, I am tuned to making a partnership with the people of Wayne First United Methodist that we might be for our day such a community of disciples. I can’t come in knowing what that partnership will look like exactly, but just has a teacher has curriculum marks toward which they strive, as a pastor, I hope that our congregation will joyfully bear such marks as the fruits of the spirit in Galatians 5:22-23, the requirements of God in Micah 6:6-8, or the Beatitudes of Jesus Sermon on the Mount in Matthew and Luke. I was a student in my father’s classroom for a year. He was the first teacher to ever put me on detention (I think my older sister can say the same thing, while my younger sister learned from our mistakes). He was also the first to grin and erase my name from the detention list on a different occasion. Along with many of his colleagues, he set me on a lifetime course of learning that has brought joy not only to my mind but to my heart and spirit as well. I hope that as your pastor, God’s Holy Spirit can work through me to bring the joy of Christ into the years, yes, years, we spend together. Pastor Carter

Fifty years ago this summer, my father, Tim Cortelyou, walked into the principal’soffice of the Phelps High School to apply for the open Eighth grade Social Studiesposition. Over his objections the application was marked Seventh grade English andhe was hired on the spot. Standing 6’3”, and still almost as fit as during his ship’smechanics days in the Navy, my dad met the primary qualification for a positionwhich would mean enforcing discipline in the particularly unruly class that wouldeventually graduate in 1970. For the next thirty years, my father andEd McChesney towered over the west upstairs hall of the building, and rabble rouserslearned to mind their p’s & q’s.

For all of the authority given to him as a 7th grade schoolteacher, my father under-stood that each year he was presented with a new group of students, almost all ofwhom had been together for several years. And something he learned about teaching11-13 year-old children is largely true about pastoring congregations as well. MOVING ON

A new Pastor came to town. After about a month the church received a billfor lawn work at the parsonage. No one paid much attention to it; the Pastor hadbeen busy getting acquainted and familiar with the community and probablydidn't have time to cut the grass. The next month another bill came, so thefinance committee met and decided they couldn't afford to pay these bills eachmonth. They sent the chairperson out to talk to the Pastor about it. After a shortcordial visit the chairperson ask the Pastor about the bills. The Pastor said, "Yes,I've hired a crew to take care of the yard and they are really doing a good Job."So, the chairperson responded by saying "the former Pastor cut the grass himself, have thought about that?" Yes said the Pastor" and I asked him but he don't wantto do it anymore."

The point of this story is: The only reason to look at our experiences of thepast, both good and bad, is to make better decisions as we move forward. Thepast is gone, it's history and it's time to forget the past and move ahead into thefuture.

In the book of Ephesians 4:11-13 Paul writes, "Now these are the gifts Christ gaveto the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors andteachers, their responsibility is to equip God's people to do his work and build upthe church, the body of Christ.

The key word in our scripture above is equip. If we were asked the questioncan the Pastor do it all? I think we would all agree that the answer is no. Thoughthe Pastor's job is to equip the people for ministry, certainly there are some obviousministries that the Pastor must do, such as preach, visit the sick and do Christiancounseling. However, the Holy Spirit has also given each Christian special gifts forbuilding up the church. This involves teaching, nurturing, giving, administering, building, and many other tasks. By pooling these gifts we are able to do manythings that an individual cannot do alone. We all need to look for opportunities touse are special gift for building up the church. Working together, the church canexpress the fullness of Christ.

In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy! Phil. 1:4

Somebody took the time to Smile

And somebody else smiled back.

Somebody took the time to learn

What so many people lack.

Somebody gave a cooling drink

To a thirsty passer-by;

Somebody fed a hungry child,

And the child forgot to cry.

Somebody took the time to pray,

And the bells began to chime.

What a wonderful world this world

Could be -

If somebody took the time.

If you're not familiar with the work of StevenWright, he's the famous erudite (comic) scientistwho once said: "I woke up one morning, and all ofmy stuff had been stolen and replaced by exact du-plicates."

His mind sees things differently than most of usdo. Here are some of his gems:

1 - I'd kill for a Nobel Peace Prize.

2 - Borrow money from pessimists -- they don'texpect it back.

3 - Half the people you know are below average.

4 - 99% of lawyers give the rest a bad name.

5 - 82.7% of all statistics are made up on the spot.

6 - A conscience is what hurts when all your otherparts feel so good.

7 - A clear conscience is usually the sign of a badmemory.

8 - If you want the rainbow, you have got to put upwith the rain.

9 - All those who believe in psycho kinesis, raisemy hand.

10 - The early bird may get the worm, but the sec-ond mouse gets the cheese.

11 - I almost had a psychic girlfriend...But she leftme before we met.

12 - OK, so what's the speed of dark?

13 - How do you tell when you're out of invisibleink?

14 - If everything seems to be going well, you haveobviously overlooked something.

15 - Depression is merely anger without enthusi-asm.

16 - When everything is coming your way, you'rein the wrong lane.

17 - Ambition is a poor excuse for not havingenough sense to be lazy.

18 - Hard work pays off in the future; lazinesspays off now.

19 - I intend to live forever...So far, so good.

20 - If Barbie is so popular, why do you have tobuy her friends?

21 - Eagles may soar, but weasels don't getsucked into jet engines.

22 - What happens if you get scared half to deathtwice?

23 - My mechanic told me, "I couldn't repairyour brakes, so I made your horn louder."

24 - Why do psychics have to ask you for yourname.

25 - If at first you don't succeed, destroy all evi-dence that you tried.

26 - A conclusion is the place where you gottired of thinking.

27 - Experience is something you don't get untiljust after you need it.

28 - The hardness of the butter is proportional tothe softness of the bread.

29 - To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism;to steal from many is research.

30 - The problem with the gene pool is that thereis no lifeguard.

31 - The sooner you fall behind, the more timeyou'll have to catch up.

32 - The colder the x-ray table, the more of yourbody is required to be on it.

33 - Everyone has a photographic memory; somejust don't have film.

34 - If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is notfor you.

And the all-time favorite:

35 - If your car could travel at the speed of light, would your headlights work.
