Just a note from your......

Potentate and First LadyHave a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Can you believe this year is almost over?

Carol and I can’t tell you how much fun we’ve had being on the Divan these past four years, it sure went by fast.

It’s also been my honor being your Potentate this year. As we finish up this month, I would like to say congratula-tion to all the Divan Members for a job well done. Bob Moore did a great job with the Circus, Chuck Hudson has worked very hard this year to bring in all the New Nobles, we even have four more scheduled for a short form after Christmas. Thank you John Krodel for stepping in and helping out whenever needed, he’s been watching and learning all year. Congratulations to Bob Mantle, your High Priest & Prophet and Hospital Chairman for hav-ing one of the best Golf Tournaments ever.

Thanks also to Jerry Patterson and the MotorCops for Kids for their donation of $24,000 dollars, the Mad Dog Moore Fishing Tournament for $31,000 dollars and all the other donations we received this year. Wow, these are some wonderful people who donate their time and talent to raise money for Our Hospitals. Over all, the Nobles of Hella, with the help of their Ladies, have raised over $350,000 for the hospital this year. What’s the old saying, there’s nothing stronger than the Heart of a volunteer.

As I take time to reflect back over the past year, as your Potentate, although I will miss being your Potentate, Carol and I will still be around to continue to support you, and your upcoming Divan. We hope that you have enjoyed all the Parties, Dinners and entertainment we arranged for you this year. We know that we could not have achieved anything without all the support of everyone. We thank our Temple staff, Ginger Jolly and Lisa Rog-ers for running the office, Mary Sakura and Norma Taylor for heading up and scheduling all the events. Without these ladies we could not keep our doors open. It’s been told that only two things keep a man coming back to the Temple, that is the good food and the magic words, “the bar is open.” I’m kidding, it’s all about the smiles and happiness that keeps us coming. We thank Ronny Hampton for preparing all the great meals we had this year. And we thank Phelps Brown for taking care of the bar. It takes a village to take care of the Temple, The Potentate and 1st Lady. Our aides are a village unto themselves, they have been invaluable to us.

I want to give a huge Thanks to Steve Conley, Chief of the 101’s and our Chaplain, he has blessed us at all Stated Meetings and events, he confers with all that were sick and prayed for all who have passed. When I think of Steve Conley, I think of him as the essence of a brother Shriner.

We are truly blessed to have a wonderful place to meet and so many good Nobles and ladies in our Shrine.

Good Bye to all, I’m looking forward to seeing you all next year. *** Merry Christmas and Happy New Year ***

PARDUE, William Donald

W.D. “Bill” Pardue passed peacefully into the arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Monday, November 21, 2016, after a sudden onset of Leukemia and a rapid decline. He joined his wife of 68 years, Alma Lucille “Tulie”, who had passed 8 months earlier, in heaven. Bill was born in Dallas, Texas, to William Ray and Ella Clementine Gawne Pardue on August 26, 1927. He gradu-ated from Crozier Tech High School through a special DISD pro-gram for Veterans following his service in the Merchant Marines in World War II. Bill and Tulie married on June 11, 1948. They had 3 sons and 1 daughter, W.D. “Don” Jr of Heath, Stephen Ray Pardue of Rockwall, Donna Lucille Pardue Robinson of Caddo Mills and Randal Wayne Pardue of Dallas. Bill started a concrete and construction business with a pickup and a cement mixer after the war. He grew that business to include home and apartment construction and apartment own-ership and management. His homes were featured in the Dallas Parade of Homes. His apartment developments provided housing for thousands of people across the metroplex. He had the joy of

working with his sons and grandsons in his business. His ‘retirement’ was spent running cattle operations on his W2 Ranches in Caddo Mills, Texas, and Carey, Idaho. Bill loved the outdoors. He worked outside, was an avid hunter, fisherman, gardener, snow and water skier and world traveler. He took his morning walk and did his exercises every day, rain or shine. He was obsessive about health and fitness and was in amazing shape. He cer-tainly did not look 89. Although Bill was a successful man, success was not what defined him. He was a humble man who thought about others more than himself. He was a generous man, giving to help plant churches, start businesses, fund a first home, buy a car, pay medical expenses and supporting his church, First United Lutheran Church. His deals were often sealed with a good faith hand shake. Bill helped others through his involvement with the Masons, Shriners and various hospital boards. Bill was a Scottish Rite Mason and was honored with the Thirty-Third Degree Inspector Honorary in 1995. He was a York Rite Mason and was awarded the “Red Cross of Constantine”. He was a member of the John L. DeGrazier Lodge #1349 and was a past Master Scout. He received the 65 year Service Award from the Claude L. Austin Lodge #1450. He served as a District Deputy Grand Master for the Grand Lodge of Texas. Bill was a Master Mason and received the prestigious Golden Trowel Award in 2015. He served as Potentate of the Dallas Hella Shrine in 1984. Bill served on the Board of the Shriner’s Hospi-tal in Houston for 12 years and had the title of Board of Trustees Emeritus. He donated the statue of the Shriner and child (Silent Messenger) that stands in front of the Houston hospital. Bill was a Certified Peace Officer of the State of Texas and a Dallas County Constable Deputy. Bill’s selfless generosity was felt most profoundly by his family. He cared for Tulie for 5 years as she battled Parkinsons and LBD, setting an example for all by his love and sacrifice. His W2 Ranch was the family gathering place. He taught his grandkids and great-grandkids to fish, took them for rides on the tractor and golf carts, did target practice with the bigger kids and fashioned a 9 hole golf course out of pasture land. He built a beautiful place that is now the home of special memories. Bill is survived by his 4 children and their spouses, 14 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren. Family received friends on Friday, November 25, 2016 at Restland Funeral Home. Service were held on Saturday, November 26, 2016 in the Memorial Chapel at Restland. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children at Shrinershospitalsforchildren.org/donate.

A FRATERNAL NEWSLETTER November 2016

The Public

RelationsVoice

A Message From The Public Relations ChairmanDear Fellow Nobles,

This certainly is an exciting time of year for our Shriners organizations. The Shriners Hospitals for Children Open concluded recently – it was

a terrific tournament, and our patients were outstanding in their roles as standard bearers, presenters of the Hospital Experience, and even as golfers. We are confident their self-esteem, grace and abilities brought home the meaning and importance of Shriners Hospitals. Our nobles who helped out in so many ways, especially as official volunteers, also did a tramendous job, and we are very grateful for their hard work and dedication.

The New Year will kick-off with the annual, iconic Rose Parade. Since the parade is televised nationally and internationally, our presence in the parade brings us incalculable media exposure, and the opportunity to introduce Shriners Hospitals for Children® and Shriners International to countless people worldwide. And, later in January is the 92nd East-West Shrine Game® in St. Petersburg, Florida. We look forward to having as many of you as possible join us for a day of fun and football.

And, while it is still a few months away, it’s not too early to make your plans to attend Imperial Session, July 9-13 in Daytona Beach, Florida. We are adding several new activities that will appeal to different interests and age groups. For example, there will be a golf tournament, motorcycle ride and nightly live entertainment in the band shell on the beach. We will be providing plenty of information on these and other events throughout the coming months. Imperial Session is the time we

get together as one huge Shriner family, and we would love to see everyone there.

Thank you for everything you do for Shriners International and Shriners Hospitals for Children.

Yours in the faith,

Imperial Chief Rabban and Imperial Public Relations Chairman

The East-West Shrine Game is the longest running, most respected college all-star football game in the nation.

The East-West Shrine Game was first played in 1925. The West team won 7 - 0 in the third quarter on a pass from Talma "Tut" Imlay of Cal-Berkeley to Golden Bear teammate Harold "Brick" Muller. It was the only pass ever thrown by Imlay in a football game.

The East-West Shrine Game is played for the benefit of Shriners Hospitals for Children.

The East-West Shrine Game typically invites two Canadian players to participate each year.

The East-West Shrine Game played on January 2, 1965, at San Francisco’s Kezar Stadium was nicknamed The Mud Bowl. Strong winds and torrential rain made a muddy mess of field and players; despite the historically bad weather conditions players fought on to finish the game.

Nile News From Queen Anna GareyDecember 2016 Article

I hope that everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and were able to spend time with those who are important to you.

Several of our Clownettes participated in the Veteran’s Day Parade on November 11th and I enjoyed being a part of this wonderful tribute to our veterans. The weather was beautiful and we all had such fun!

I want to extend a special thank you to Princess Tirzah, Carol Barrera for a fantastic Queen’s Ball/CRA Fundraiser on November 19th. She did an outstanding job and everyone had a great time! Also, thanks to all of her volunteers who assisted in making this a success-ful fundraiser. A lot of hard work and planning went into this evening and Pr. Carol went above and beyond to in hopes that it would generate generous contributions and provide everyone a great evening. My thanks to the many Nobles in attendance whose generosity and support is very much appreciated.

I want to remind all our members that we will have a BBQ dinner prior to Session at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 7th. I will provide the beef brisket and ask those who would like to add to the meal to please bring sides and desserts.

We will be honored by the presence of our Supreme Queen Cathy Carol Rose on Friday, January 6th. She will attend our Ceremonial scheduled for 2:00 p.m. that day. There will be a banquet in her honor that evening at 6:00 p.m. in the Terrace Ballroom. Tickets for the banquet are still available for $30 each (contact Pr. Amy Kirkpatrick).

In preparation for the Ceremonial, we will have an Officers practice (if you have chair, please be there) on December 14th and December 28th at 7:00 p.m.

I hope you all have a wonderful holiday season. Wishing you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Annual Meeting of Hella TempleTransaction of Regular Business, Election of Officers and Representatives for 2017

Thursday, December 15, 2016All members of Hella Temple are urged to attend this important meeting. Your presence will be a compliment to our retiring

Potentate and will also serve as evidence of good wishes on the part of our nobility to our new Potentate and his Divan.2016 Or 2017 Dues Card Required Please Wear Your Fez

Official Notice As required by the By-Laws of the Imperial Council of our Order, Notice is hereby tendered to the membership of Hella Shrine that the regular annual session of the Temple will be held in the Hella Shrine Ballroom, 2121 Rowlett Rd., Garland, Texas, 75043, on December 15, 2016. At this meeting, officers for the coming year will be elected and such other business transacted as is proper and which usually comes before the annual meeting. The Imperial Council By-Laws require every Temple to quote the following Imperial Council By-Laws. Candidates MUST be in GOOD STANDING.

Section 325-10“(a) The printing, publication or distribution of resolutions, letters, telegrams, tickets or other devices, by a Noble, suggesting, recom-mending, opposing or containing the names of proposed candi-dates for office in the Temple is prohibited.(b) For any violation of (a), the Imperial Potentate may suspend any offending Noble, and he may declare the election of officers void and order a new election.(c) At least one week prior to the Annual Meeting or any election, the Temple Recorder shall mail to each member a notice contain-ing this section.”Wayne Osborne, Potentate Roger Carney, PP, Recorder

Annual Election of OfficersDivan Line Officers Must Be Selected Wisely

We are genuinely grateful that our Temple has been favored in past years and is currently favored with sin-cere, honest, able and devoted leader-ship through its elected Officers. How-ever, external vigilance must be wisely and thoughtfully exercised by the vot-ing membership in order to perpetuate a high caliber of leadership! Every Noble is a good Noble... but it does not necessarily follow that every Noble is fitted to meet the rigor-ous demands imposed upon Divan Of-ficers and Potentates. So let us be fair, honest and wise in the all important matter of electing to Office only men who are eminently qualified for the job. We all know that with honor comes respon-sibility. And while there is high honor associated with a Divan Office, the ensuing responsibilities entail a lot of time consuming, energy consuming, WORK!

So That You May Know The Nobility of Hella Temple will elect its Officers at the Annual Meeting, December 15, 2016. We believe some of the points established in this article will be very helpful to you in selecting your Offi-cers for Hella Temple. Our desire to be of help to our Temple has prompted us to present it to you for your consider-ation

The Elected Divan A Noble can be a good fellow, a hard worker and a loyal Shriner... and yet lack the basic qualifications which make a good Potentate. Unless a Noble is fully qualified for the job, it is unfair both to himself and to his Temple in seeking the Office or allowing his fel-low Nobles to support and promote his candidacy Each Shrine Temple needs and requires able leadership. The normal starting point of that leadership is dem-onstrated by what the candidate has done previously serving in the elected and appointed officers of the Temple. The following Check List may prove helpful in evaluating potential candi-dates for the vacant offices. However, no thinking man would be so naive or presumptuous as to believe that any one Noble could possibly embody all of the virtues, talents and qualifica-tions which are set forth in this Check List. Nevertheless the List has practical value... for self evaluation by the Noble whose ultimate aspiration is the Office of Illustrious Potentate and for evalua-tion of potential candidates by the vot-ing members.

Qualifications for Hella Temple Office. The candidates should have demon-strated:-Leadership-Executive Ability-Business Sense-Community Standing and Influence-Well Poised-Good Health-Diplomacy-Stage Presence-Competent Organizer and Promoter-Possess Social Graces-Financially Secure-Energy and Vitality-Free to devote ample time-Capable of building Public Relations-Good Habits and Moral Character-INTEREST IN THE SHRINE-Ability to give and get cooperation-Capable of delegating responsibility-Understanding beforehand with wife and family

When the members of a Shrine Temple elect a Noble to any office, they are placing this Noble in the Di-van Line on the assumption that he will prove qualified and worthy of advance-ment to the High Office of Illustrious Potentate. Hence, it is quite evident the nominations should be based upon a thorough and accurate evaluation of character, ability, interest and experi-ence.

ALL APPOINTMENTS BY A POTENTATE EXPIRE AT THE

END OF HIS TERM For the information of all Nobles, when a Potentate’s term of office expires, all appoint-ments made by him during his administration terminate. Appointments include but are not limited to, the Potentate’s Staff, the Appointive Divan, Ambassadors, Membership Representa-tives, Chairman of Committees and their mem-bers, Appointive Officers and Ceremonial Divan. On Occasion, it is mistakenly believed, or assumed by some Nobles, that their appoint-ments are permanent. This is not the case. Each Potentate, when he is installed in office as chief executive of a Temple of the Mystic Shrine must make his own appointments including the 1st and 2nd Ceremo-nial Masters, Director, Marshall, Captain of the Guard, Outer Guard and Chaplain. The Potentate has the power and authority under the Imperial Shrine Law to replace every appointee or he may, if he believes it to be in the best interest of the Temple, retain all appointees by re-appointment. Traditionally many Nobles of demonstrat-ed ability are continued in office or appointment by re-appointment. But this is at the will and pleasure of the incoming Potentate. If a Noble is to continue in his appointive office or position, by re-appointment, he will be notified by the incoming Potentate, to that affect. Should any Noble not holding an appoint-ment by the current Potentate, wear a fez car-rying a title bestowed upon him by a previous Potentate, the Noble wearing that fez does so in violation of the Imperial Code. In the event a Noble is not reappointed to a position, his feelings should not be offended as there are many good Nobles that deserve an op-portunity to serve Hella Temple.

THE PUBLIC RELATIONS VOICE November 2016

Be Burn Aware Campaign Launched

Here’s how you can help: Be the Voice of Fire and Burn Safety in Your Community: Fresh cut Christmas trees are the most dangerous source of house fires during the holidays. One of the key ways to educate the community about tree safety is to take the information to the source – anywhere live trees are sold.

Create a Visible Reminder: Shriners Hospitals for Children created Fezzy-themed Be Burn Aware tree tags with useful tips to keep Christmas trees safe from fire. These tree tags can be taken to local tree distributors and handed out at community events. Start your outreach as soon as local retailers beginning setting up for tree sales.

As part of our continued partnership with the National Association of School Nurses (NASN), we are pleased to announce that the Shriners Hospitals Be Burn Aware program is prominently featured in the November issue of NASN School Nurse magazine as follows:

» The ABCs of Burn Care for School-Age Children article by Philip Chang, M.D., of Shriners Hospitals for Children — Cincinnati

» A sample of the Be Burn Aware activity book, encouraging nurses to order them for their schools

» A full page ad highlighting Shriners Hospitals for Children as the leader in pediatric burn care

Additionally, a NASN Radio podcast interview with Dr. Chang will be available soon. To listen to the podcast, please visit schoolnursenet.nasn.org/resources/nasnradio.

Click here to visit the materials ordering system on shrinersvillage.com to order your safety tip cards.

Click here for a printable version of the tree tag.

Spread the Word: We encourage you to share this useful information with your friends, family, businesses and the public at any appropriate community event.

For more information, please visit beburnaware.org.

Shriners Hospitals featured in November NASN School Nurse Magazine

According to a survey recently commissioned by Shriners Hospitals for Children, many Americans do not follow key fire and burn safety tips during the holiday season, which can be one of the most dangerous times of year. That is why, on November 15, Shriners Hospitals for Children once again began to promote holiday fire safety and burn prevention with the Be Burn Aware campaign.

Shriners Hospitals for Children has released public service announcements (PSAs), featuring actor Joe Minoso of NBC’s hit show Chicago Fire, that urge families to take precautions like watering live Christmas trees daily to reduce fire risks. A holiday fire safety and burn awareness quiz is also now available on beburnaware.org to test public knowledge and provide tools to learn more.
