These 15 foods are all top performers in protecting your heart and blood vessels.

Salmon– Nutrients are omega- 3 fatty acids. You can grill with a yummy rub or marinade. Save a chunk to add to your salad or pasta later on. Flaxseed (ground) - Nutrients are Omega– 3 fatty acids, fiber, and phytoestrogens. Ground flaxseed hides easily in many foods such as yogurts, cereal, muffins, or cookies. Oatmeal– Nutrients are omega– 3 fatty acids, magnesium, potassium, folate, niacin, calcium, and soluble fiber. Top oatmeal with fresh berries or have an oatmeal– and—raisin cookie. Bridge Club - Tuesdays at the Senior Center from 9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. Please call Joe Mozgai at 884-0928, or call 884-5415 for more information. New members are welcome! Mexican Train Dominoes - Join us on Tuesday Game Days, Wednesdays and Fridays after lunch for a fun game of dominoes. Anyone can join and it’s free. Can’t beat free entertainment! Box Tops & Labels for Education - The Senior Center is collecting “Box Tops & Labels for Education” to benefit our local schools. Please drop them in the plastic container on the front counter. Blue Star Moms - Donations for our troops are being collected for the Blue Star Moms of Durango. There is a drop box at the Senior Center for donated items. Support our troops and this great organization! Pine River Seniors Board Meetings - Held on the 2nd Wednesday of eve-ry other month. The 2013 dates are January 9, March 13, May 8, July 10, September 11 and November 13. Everyone is welcome to join us at 1:00 p.m. in the conference room. Community Quilt Group -Tuesday, May 7 Invites all Quilters and People with homemade projects to come join them on the 1st Tuesday of each month. Mrs. Lee’s Salad Dory Durkan

2 pkgs. strawberry jello 1 cup boiling pineapple juice 2 pkg. (10 oz. each) frozen strawberries 1 can crushed pineapple, drained 3 medium bananas, crushed 1 cup chopped nuts 1 pt. sour cream Dissolve jello in juice. Add strawberries, pineapple, bananas, and nuts Put half of mixture in Pyrex dish and let set. Pour sour cream on top and then add rest of jello mixture. Chill.

Southwestern Rice Renee Barreras/Maxine Dvojack

1 cup water 1 cup salsa of choice 1-1/2 cups instant rice 3/4 cup sour cream 1 can green chilies 1 cup shredded cheese In medium pan, bring water and salsa to a boil. Stir in rice. Remove from heat, cover and let stand 5 minutes. Stir sour cream into rice. Pour into 8” square baking pan. Spread green chilies over rice and top with cheese. Bake in preheated 350 degree oven for 20 minutes.

Food guidelines for the Nutrition Program for the Elderly

Food guidelines for the Nutrition Program for the Elderly states that participants may ask for smaller servings so food is not wasted. According to the State Unit on Aging Policies and Procedures in order to ensure food safety, food cannot be shared from one participant's plate to another. All food, except whole fruit, must be consumed on the premises and no leftovers can be taken home from the meal site. Seconds are offered most days when extra food has been prepared. Thank you for adhering to these guide lines. It is very important that everyone follows food safety standards to ensure our program continues according to state and federal guidelines. If you have any questions please call Carol Melcher @ 382-6441 or Sheila Casey @ 382-6442 Continued - Blueberries– Nutrients are beta –carotene and lutein, athocyanin, ellagic acid, vitamin C, folate, calcium, magnesium, potassium, and fiber. Blueberries can be added to yogurts, muffins, even salads, or just eat them plain. Carrots– Nutrients are alpha– carotene and fiber. Baby carrots are a great snack. Sneak chopped or shredded carrots into spaghetti sauce or muffin batter. Spinach– Nutrients are beta-carotene, vitamins C and E, potassium, folate, calcium and fiber. Use spinach for your salads and sandwiches. Broccoli– Nutrients are beta– carotene, vitamins C and E, potassium, folate, calcium, and fiber. Chop broccoli into your salads, soups, or even dip in veggie dip.

Walking to New Heights - A new walking program that is every Monday,8:30 am to 9:30 am. Free no charge to set health goals and exercise or walk and visit for fun. Everyone is welcome. Watch Your Step - WYS is a balance and coordination-based exercise class that takes place every Wednesday & Friday from 10:15 a.m. - 11:15 a.m. The cost is $15 for 12 weeks or $1 for a drop-in. Reserve your spot today! Yoga - Tuesday & Thursday at the Pine River Library Community Room 8:00 am - 9:15 am Colleen Theobald will guide participants through Beginning Hatha Yoga Class.
