News and Notes
Throughout the year, a variety of UNR classes require students to complete
volunteer hours with organizations throughout Reno/Sparks in order to get
hands on experience in their field of study. We are fortunate enough to
have several UNR students select The Note-Ables as the place they wish to
garner experience. Not only does this help them to understand more fully
the career path they selected and prepare them for the future, but it also is
a great help to the organization.
“So far my experience at The Note-Ables has been very powerful. Every
time I volunteer, which is more like a jam session for me, I am amazed and
excited to connect with other people through music and to see that really
expression through music has no boundaries.” – Nate Eng
Much of the success of The Note-Ables is made possible by the kindness
and dedication of volunteers. They help us with administrative and office
tasks and assist our teachers during class times.
“My favorite is the Drum Circle. We all play different beat variations but
together we make awesome music!” – Rodel Maulit
Volunteers make it possible for us to provide individual guidance during
large group classes where otherwise we would not be able to dedicate
that time to just one person. This semester Rick Monsalvo, Rodel Maulit,
Cassidy Munzo, Sarah Coles, Nate Eng, and Jill Dowty have joined the
Note-Ables as volunteers.
“The experience for me is a great one. I have learned to let go, be yourself
and enjoy what the classes have to offer. I think this class is just as much for
me, as a volunteer, as it is for the students.” – Jill Dowty.
Thank you UNR
volunteers Rick, Rodel,
Cassidy, Nate, Jill, and
Sarah, along with
Patty, Travis, John and
Nanette for giving
your time and energy
to help us grow as an
organization! We
couldn’t do it without
you.

Message from the Director
I can’t believe that we just celebrated our 8th anniversary as a Nevada nonprofit!
Honestly, it does make me feel pretty old, but I am also so proud of all we have
accomplished. We have grown so much - expanding our clinical work, increasing
community outreach, developing new partnerships, serving more diverse populations,
and there is more to come. I truly believe that we have been able to do all of this by
staying true to our core philosophy and belief in the power of music to change people's
lives.
When a parent of a child with autism tells us how much calmer her son is after a music
therapy session, or when a nurse is amazed to see a nonverbal, withdrawn senior with
dementia sing and laugh, it reinforces that our commitment to the clinical use of music
is something that is vital not only to the people we serve, but to our community as a
whole. With the support of my amazing staff, Board, Advisory Board, and volunteers, we
are continuing to grow. I am proud of our past and excited about our future. Great
things are in the works - and I look forward to sharing all of our new projects with you as
the year progresses!
Take Note: Spring Activities in the Community
March Thank Yous
There is so much going on this spring, so gather the family and head out to join in the fun
First up on April 17th at UNR Mackay Stadium is the Spring Forward for Autism Walk. Join
the Lili Claire Foundation for this family-friendly event benefiting families and children
impacted by autism spectrum and other neurodevelopmental disorders. There will
activities for the whole family, information about community resources, a great raffle,
and a performance by The Note-Ables at 9:15 a.m.
On May 1st at Idlewild Park, get your “green” on at Reno’s annual Earth Day
Celebration! Enjoy local food, science, technology and the arts, and take the
opportunity to talk to experts who can address your questions about your environment
and how you can help or get involved. The Note-Ables will have a booth at the event,
teaching children how to make musical instruments out of repurposed household
materials.
On May 14th head to Meadowood Mall for Macy’s 5th annual Community Shopping
Day! Community Shopping Day is a way for Macy’s to give back by supporting local
non-profits in their efforts to increase visibility and funding at the same time. Tickets are
$10, 100% of which goes directly to The Note-Ables. Your ticket entitles you to 10-20% off
almost everything and a $10 off coupon with the purchase of $25 or more! You will also
be eligible to enter a drawing for a $500 shopping spree on May 14th. There will be a
variety of family activities throughout Macy’s stores on the day of the event, and our
performing group will be singing from 1 – 1:30 p.m. Please call 324.5521 to buy your
ticket!
Thank you to the Alliance with the Washoe County Medical Society for a $1,000 grant to
help fund our 2011 Teen Beat Summer Music Camp.

Music Therapy helping young patients with discomfort at University of California,
San Francisco Medical Center
An innovative program at UCSF is using music to help treat some of the medical
center's youngest patients. And the program could soon be spreading to other
hospitals as well.
A childhood stroke has interrupted Erik Hernandez's speech, but not his ability to
express himself. He's finding the beat with the help of Meagan Hughes, a music
therapist at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital. The program introduces music to help
young patients cope with the stress and discomfort of being hospitalized.

Music Therapy in the News
Welcome, Ellie and Kate!
Kate Kirkpatrick is the Manager of Sustained Giving at Saint Mary’s
Foundation and has worked in the field of fundraising for more than 10
years. A life-long music lover, she plays trombone with the Sierra Swing
Big Band and is a local and national Board member of Sigma Alpha Iota
women’s music fraternity. Her husband, Jay, is also a trombone player.
When Kate is not working or playing music, she stays busy with her two
young sons. Ellie Van Winkle is currently working as a Speech Language
Pathologist at Tahoe Pacific Hospital. She is the current President elect
of the American Judges Foundation and has been involved with a
variety of local community organizations including the Junior League
of Reno and Special Olympics. She believes, “The Note-Ables
provides individuals with disabilities an excellent avenue for self-
growth and self-esteem. It not only enhances the lives of those
people, it also enriches the lives of the community.”
