1 Dear Park Center Families, Welcome to the start of new trimester and finally some weather that can make us smile. We have had an amazing year and I look forward to a strong finish. There are many exciting and important things happening at Park Center, so please read on. As you know, there as been much work done surrounding our upcoming grade reconfiguration for the 2015-2016 school year. With the addition of 9th grade students, we will have approximately 1900 students in the fall. It was awesome to meet many of our incoming students at registration last month, and I am excited about the opportunities that will be afforded to our students, staff, and our community. Currently, we are in the process of filling many teaching positions. Not only will half of our students be new to Park Center next year, but we will also have about 60 new staff members. Our goal at Park Center is to make every family and every new staff member feel welcomed and valued. We have amazing students and professionals working at Park Center; it is an honor for me to work at such a great school. If you have driven by the school recently, you can tell that construction is well underway. We are adding 12 new classrooms to the west side of the building, renovating many classrooms, and updating our cafeteria so that we can better serve our students. Most of the work will be done this summer and we look forward to our updated facilities. Also, all 1900 students have been successfully registered for next year, which includes a seven-period day. I am excited for what the schedule will provide for our students as we personalize learning so that each student can see their dreams come true. Finally, I am exited to share that Park Center saw another year of excellent growth in students’ on-time graduation. Every racial subgroup has achieved substantial gains over the past five years. Overall, our 86.7% graduation rate is 5% higher than the state average. And specifically, our Hispanic students achieved nearly a 27% increase from a year ago! These gains happen when a school community is committed to ensuring that all students succeed. I have been so impressed with the determination and commitment from our staff and students. Our goal is to ensure equitable student achievement – 100%! How are we doing? What can we do better? Please email, call, or stop in to share your thoughts, ideas, and concerns. In addition, please make sure you regularly check out our school website, Facebook and/or Twitter pages for updates. It truly is the best way to stay connected! Thank you for trusting us with your awesome students! We appreciate your support, and look forward to finishing the year strong. Class of 2015 Parent/Guardian,

Part of the senior year experience at Park Center is the opportunity to attend the Senior All Night Party. It is a fabu-

lous, safe event that will take place on Sunday June 7th, 2015, from 9:30pm to 5:00am at the Brunswick Zone in

Brooklyn Park. It is the last time the seniors will be all together and we would like your senior to attend this year’s

party. Early ticket sales are critical and are used to help fund this self-supporting event (see registration form on

page 5) . The safe lock-in party includes lots of food, bowling, unlimited arcade games, entertainment and PRIZES

for everyone. We have several parents helping out, but need MORE VOLUNTEERS to help with the fundraising.

Please contact Diane Schaub at [email protected] if you would like to help or need further information.

TIPS ON STAYING INFORMED ABOUT PCSH 1. Refer to the Student Handbook (in student planner) which students received the first week of school. This reference tool

contains important information regarding school procedures and behavioral expectations. The electronic version will be posted on the Park Center website schools.district279.org/pcsh. This is a critical tool for both students and families.

2. Plan to attend Park Center’s Parent Engagement Meetings scheduled from 6:30-7:30 p.m. during parent-teacher conferences on: January 29, and April 30 in the Forum Room. All parents/guardians are welcome and encouraged to attend to provide input and feedback on the programs at PCSH as well as share concerns and ask questions.

3. Visit our website at schools.district279.org/pcsh regularly. This is also a good resource for PSEO students and parents. Please note that the PCSH website is not updated during the summer.

4. “Follow” our Facebook page by searching for “Park Center Senior High” or on Twitter @ParkCenterSrHS. 5. Listen to SchoolMessenger phone messages that come to your home. Please contact our registrar, Cindy Swanson, at (763) 569-

7617 if your phone number changes during the school year; you may also update it through your SchoolView account. 6. Ask your son or daughter what is happening at school!

TIPS ON STAYING INFORMED ABOUT YOUR CHILD’S PROGRESS 1. Log on to SchoolView Parent Access and check updated grades (obtain your access key in the Counseling Office). 2. Provide your e-mail address (if available) to your child’s teachers. Our teachers have found that this is a very effective means of

communicating with parents in a timely manner. 3. Review progress on your child’s school assignments using his/her school planner. All students will be given a planner the first

week of school. These planners have been designed to help students plan and manage their time and assist them in taking an active part in enhancing their academic achievement. Sophomore students will learn to use the planner with the help of their teachers.

4. Ask your child how he/she is doing! Ask to see his/her daily assignments and copies of work returned from teachers. Ask your son or daughter about blog sites the teachers provide to keep him/her up to date on class activities, readings and assignments.

5. Plan to attend Parent/Teacher Conferences. Mid-trimester conferences provide great opportunities to get updates on how your child is doing in his/her classes. We also host Registration Conferences that offer students and parents assistance in choosing classes for the next school year.

2014-15 ACT TEST

DATES

ALL Junior students are encouraged to take the ACT or SAT test at some point during the year. Students may take the test as many times as they would like. Students can register online at www.actstudent.org. Students on free and reduced lunch can receive a waiver to take the ACT for free. Students need to provide a letter from the district’s Food Service office verifying free/reduced lunch status and the Career Resource Center can write up two waiver’s per student to take the ACT on two separate dates.

On April 28, 2015, all Park Center juniors will be given the ACT test during the school day. This is first year of a new initiative by the State of Minnesota to provide FREE ACT testing to all juniors. See the school’s website for more details.

CRC UPDATE On November 12, sophomores took the PLAN Test, juniors took the ASVAB Test and seniors were involved in a “Senior Experience.” The “Senior Experience” included a college panel, MNACC College Fair, Senior Class picture, and a presentation by Jostens on graduation information. The PLAN is a career interest test which matches interests with the “World-of-Work” map and hundreds of jobs in the work world. The PLAN also measures college readiness and predicts a probable ACT test score. Results from the Plan will be given to students through Advisory in January. Juniors took the ASVAB, a career exploration program, which is a widely used, multiple-aptitude test which measures science, math, word knowledge, paragraph comprehension, electronics and mechanical comprehension. The ASVAB also links students to possible career choices. Results of the ASVAB will be given to students through Advisory in January.

CRC NEWSLETTER & SCHOLARSHIP BULLETIN For the latest college and scholarship information, CHECK OUT THE CRC NEWSLETTER & SCHOLARSHIP BULLETIN ONLINE at http://www.district279.org/sec/pcsh/indexbig.htm OR e-mail [email protected] and ask to be placed on the Scholarship distribution list (for seniors) and/or CRC Newsletter distribution list for all grade levels. The newest bulletins will be sent to your e-mail as they are available. You can also follow us on Facebook @ Park Center IB World High School Career Resource Center. SAT TEST DATES Dates of the 2014-15 SAT test can be found on www.collegeboard.org. Students must register online for the SAT at this site. Only students planning on attending certain colleges/universities on the East or West coast will need to take the SAT test. Students should check with the school they are planning on attending to see which tests are required, or check in the CRC for this information. Students who are on free or reduced lunch may be eligible to receive a fee waiver for SAT or ACT test fees. Stop in the CRC with a copy of the district letter stating eligibility for free/reduced lunch to receive your waiver. REQUESTING LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION Please remember that many colleges and scholarship applications require a letter of recommendation from a teacher, counselor, or other individual. Be aware of deadlines and allow at least two weeks for the recommendation to be written. Pre-recommendation and recommendation request forms are available in the CRC and Counseling Office. WARNING TO SENIORS & PARENTS! There are many companies who solicit Park Center families with offers to find college funds/scholarships for a student for a FEE. Many of these offers include a “guarantee” of money to the student. The majority of these companies develop funding plans that include federal and state financial aid and other sources of money that the student can access for free. Federal and state financial aid programs are ONLY applied for through a form called the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) beginning January 1, 2015 at www.fafsa.gov. DO NOT go to www.fafsa.com as this site ALSO charges students—the free and correct site is www.fafsa.gov. This form, along with other information on scholarships and financial aid, will be available in the CRC. The CRC has a computer program that allows students to do their own scholarship search—this is a free service to PC students! Additionally, students can go to www.fastweb.com to register for scholarships.

REQUESTING TRANSCRIPTS

Requesting transcripts is easy because Osseo Area Schools uses Parchment to handle student

transcript requests electronically. You are able to order your transcripts online, with the ease

and 24/7 convenience of the Web. The first time you visit the Parchment website, a one-time

account set up is required. The Parchment website is most compatible with Chrome or Firefox.

Log into Parchment by clicking on the button (“Request my Transcript”) on the school’s homepage. Have a valid email address

and choose a password. Select college or destination to receive your transcripts. The school approves the requests online and

Parchment does the rest by preparing the transcript and sending to your destinations. It will confirm sending and delivery so

you know when your application is complete.

Currently Enrolled Students: All transcript requests for currently enrolled students are FREE if the destination/college selected

accepts electronic transcripts. There is no limit as to how many you can request. If the destination selected does not accept

electronic transcripts, a $2 mailing fee will apply.

PCSH Alumni: Electronic transcript cost for alumni is $5. Paper copy cost for alumni is $7.

Questions? Contact Ms. Campbell at 763-569-7627 or [email protected].

POST-SECONDARY EDUCATION OPTION (PSEO) STUDENTS It is the responsibility of PSEO students to stay informed by checking in with their counselors and/or Park Center Senior High on a regular basis to stay current on important information and deadlines. PSEO students are expected to follow the same procedures and deadlines for things such as parking permits, senior/school pictures, commencement, etc. The PCSH Facebook page, Twitter account, and website (schools.district279.org/pcsh) are all good resources for PSEO students. All commencement information will be posted on the website and included in future Ship to Shore newsletters. Please note that 2nd semester PSEO grades for seniors are not used in tabulating graduation honors.

SEVERE WEATHER & EMERGENCY INFORMATION FOR FAMILIES

Generally, you can expect that school will be held, even in severe weather. Osseo Area Schools will conduct school when 85% or more students are expected to attend. If you disagree with the district’s decision to hold school on a day you believe the weather is hazardous, you may keep your child home. Please call your school’s absence line to report the absence, which will be excused. If school is cancelled, delayed, or dismissed early, we will inform you as follows: • Telephone/Email: We will call and/or email you using an automated messaging system. Please be sure to submit or update your contact information through your child’s school. • Online: Whenever possible, emergency information will be posted on the district’s website: www.district279.org, and the district’s Facebook page: www.facebook.com/OsseoSchools. • Broadcast: Information will be submitted to major radio and TV stations as “Osseo District 279.” For additional information click on “Severe Weather Procedures” found under the Students+Families tab on the district website at www.district279.org.

DISTRICT TIP LINE Our district has established a confidential and anonymous tip line. If your child sees or is aware of bullying, drugs, alcohol, weapons, violence or any other activity that jeopardizes safety and security at school, please encourage him/her to speak up by telling a trusted adult. Another way to break the silence is to call the district tip line at (763) 391-8660. No names. No trouble. Just help.

ATTENDANCE INFORMATION Our staff works hard to provide meaningful instruction every hour of every day, and we expect our students to have good attendance so they may participate fully in the learning process. If your child must be absent, please be sure to call the Attendance Office on the day your child is absent. If you are planning to take your student from school for an appointment during the school day, please call ahead or send a note to arrange his/her release. HANDBOOK INFORMATION The Park Center Student Handbook is included in the planner that was distributed to each student during the first week of school. The handbook is a guide to the various practices and procedures followed at Park Center. An electronic version of the Student Handbook is available on the Park Center website at schools.district279.org/pcsh under the For Students tab.

DRESS CODE For health and safety reasons, outerwear coats/jackets, hats, and other headgear (including skull caps, bandannas, scarves, etc.) are not to be worn during the school day. All headgear must be removed upon entering the building. In addition, students must wear appropriate footwear (no slippers allowed). Clothing should be appropriate for school and not offensive. Examples of inappropriate attire include clothing that is sexually provocative, advertises illegal substances, is associated with gang affiliation, or contains obscene or profane language or pictures, etc. More specifically, halter tops, one shoulder shirts, shirts with spaghetti straps, shirts that show too much midriff or cleavage, skirts that are too short and pants that hang too low exposing under garments are examples of attire considered inappropriate for school. All staff and administration reserve the right to determine what is appropriate under this code. If a staff member determines a student’s attire is inappropriate, the student will be expected to put on appropriate clothing. If the student does not have appropriate clothing at school to wear, an administrator, when possible, will provide a clean alternative for the student, or parents will be called to bring appropriate clothes. Students will not be excused from school to go home to change their inappropriate attire. Refusing to cooperate with staff members regarding inappropriate attire will be considered insubordination and may result in disciplinary consequences. The complete dress code appears in the Park Center Senior High Student Handbook on the PCSH website under the For Students tab.

PHONE MESSAGES FOR STUDENTS Please do not call the school and ask to have messages delivered to your child. We ask parents/guardians to be considerate of the fact that with 1400+ students we cannot accommodate relaying non-emergency messages. However, if you have an emergency, press “0” from the main phone menu, and the receptionist will assist you.

OUTSIDE FOOD & BEVERAGES For the health and safety of all students and adults in the building, outside food and beverages are not to be brought into the classrooms. These items may only be in classrooms for special events/projects with teacher or administrator prior approval. In addition, no student will be permitted to leave campus for lunch or have food/drink delivered to them by parents/guardians, friends, or businesses.

SCHOOL VISITORS & SHADOWING Frequently, we get requests from parents or students asking if a friend or family member may attend school, have lunch and/or shadow a student for a day. We do not allow students to bring visitors during the school day for various reasons: security, crowded classrooms and lunches, and the importance of maintaining a stable learning environment for all PCSH students. However, parents/guardians are more than welcome to shadow their child at any time. Please call an administrator to make the necessary arrangements.

PERSONAL DIGITAL LEARNING DEVICES & ELECTRONICS Students are encouraged to bring their personal digital learning devices to school to utilize in cooperation with their teachers to enhance their educational experience. It is the responsibility of each teacher to establish procedures and expectations for use of digital learning devices in their classroom, and it is the responsibility of each student to follow those procedures and expectations. Students are advised to secure their personal digital learning and electronic devices at all times as we are not able to provide staff time to investigate lost or stolen items. Any photographic or movie image taken of staff members on ISD 279 property without the consent of the individual(s) will result in disciplinary action. Any photographic or movie image taken of staff members on ISD 279 property cannot be published or posted on a public forum (Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, SnapChat, etc.) without the written consent of each individual. Any violation may result in disciplinary action.

ISD 279 offer parents/guardians and students an online service which will enhance teacher/parent communication. Using SchoolView, parents/guardians can access information about their child’s academic performance, including unofficial transcripts, schedule, attendance, and transportation information 24 hours a day. You can also subscribe to an alert system which will automatically send an email when your child is absent. In addition, you may use SchoolView to update your phone numbers, e-mail addresses, and emergency contact information.

To initiate a SchoolView account, a parent or legal guardian must come to the PCSH Counseling Office and present one of the following forms of personal identification:

**IMPORTANT REMINDER**

Parents/Guardians must also have a SchoolView account to register

for athletics.

MESSAGE FROM THE SCHOOL NURSE All students under 18 years of age MUST have a “Medication Administration Consent Form” completed by the parent/guardian and signed by a physician or licensed prescriber if they are taking any medications/using inhalers at school, even over-the-counter medications. Forms are available in the Health Services Office. If you have questions, please contact the school nurse, Doris Oyinloye at 763-569-7608 or [email protected].

Important Message from the Attendance Office

In an effort to better serve you while picking your student up from school during the day, we ask that you call ahead or send a note with your student. Notes should be brought to the Attendance Office first thing in the morning. Asking us to call students down from class unexpectedly takes away instructional time and is disruptive to the learning environment. We would like to keep these classroom interruptions to a minimum. Following this process will also save you time as well.

Address Changes

If you move and your student will still be attending Park Center Senior High, we need to know your new address and/or phone

number. This is very important so that you will continue to receive any mailings that are sent out over the course of the year. You

can submit an address change by contacting the Enrollment Center at (763) 585-7350. Please contact our registrar, Cindy Swanson,

at (763) 569-7617 if your phone number changes during the school year; you may also update it through your SchoolView account.

Yearbooks

The price of a yearbook has increased to $65. Yearbooks can be purchased anytime online at ybpay.lifetouch.com (Yearbook ID

Code: 6015615). A metal name plate can be purchased for an additional $10.

If you have any questions please contact the Yearbook Advisor, Ms. Heaney, at: [email protected] or students may visit her

in rooms 121/147 during the school day.

Canine Searches As one of many tools we use to keep our school safe, the ISD 279 - Osseo Area secondary schools are working in conjunction with

local law enforcement to have trained dogs randomly search our parking lot, student lockers, and the school building during and after

school hours. If a dog identifies a vehicle and/or locker as having a prohibited item, the vehicle, locker and the person they belong to

will be searched as will his or her personal items. If necessary, appropriate school and law enforcement consequences will be applied.

Volunteer Opportunities

Thank you to all the wonderful volunteers that have given of their time to make events and programs

at Park Center successful. We have volunteer opportunities coming up such as: testing, supervision,

chaperones for Prom (May 16), assistance with cap & gowns distribution, and graduation at Mariucci

Arena (June 6). If you want to volunteer and you are not on the list, please call Betty Hennen at 763-

569-7605 or email her at [email protected]. Also, please remind your students to turn in

their volunteer hours so they can be recorded for their transcripts!

Student Parking Permits

Trimester 3 parking permits were sold for $35.00 2/27- 3/5/15. After 3/5/15 the permit price increased to $45.00. Please stop by the Attendance Office to pick up an application if you have not done so already. Please see Mr. Linneman in the Student Support Office with any questions.

Transportation

MyOsseoBus is a new web-based service and mobile app that allows you to view the status of your students bus.

The service is only available for buses that serve assigned bus stops (bus routes #200-283). You can access

MyOsseoBus information from PCSH’s homepage or the district website at http://district279.org/myosseobus.

If you have any transportation related questions throughout the school year, you may call (763) 391-7244, or

email the Transportation Department at [email protected].
