“Behold! How They Love One Another”

Aristides to Emperor Hadrian in an investigatory report about Christians.

Imagine that we were sent on a spy mission to observe and report on the be-

havior of a new radical group, Christians. What would we report? Aristides reported

to the Emperor that the most amazing thing about the group was their love for one

another. His observations of the gospel made manifest in the life of the early Chris-

tians has offered the church a touchstone throughout the ages. “Are we known for how we love one an-

other?”

It becomes an important question for us as we continue to live into our question, “How are we to

be church in a pandemic?” Love, it seems, is very important to how we are the church in these difficult

days. Often, we measure how much we love with acts of mission. This week Sunrisers helped organize

and operate a special drive thru commodities distribution. We offered our building to the Red Cross for a

much needed blood drive. We’ve made lots of face masks for Ashby House and the V.A. Clinic. We’ve

sent extra contributions to our local non-profits. It’s wonderful and marvelous that we were able to do

these things. But in a pandemic, love means not just doing things – love also means staying apart.

There’s been a great deal in the news from some faith groups protesting for the “right to gather to

worship.” How do we as Presbyterians think about this? As we, and indeed most Christians think about

ethical issues such as this, the "law of love" trumps all other laws. The question to ask about an action is

"Is this on the side of love?" Gathering in groups (for me no larger than 5) invites possible harm and

death to others due to the easy spread of the virus. Thus, to gather to worship or to do anything else is

not to land on the side of love. Indeed, shopping just because a store is open might lead to possible in-

fection. Love asks us to consider if we really must go out and shop. Just because we can – doesn’t

mean it is on the side of love.

It is a simple choice not to gather to worship. We want to be on the side of love. The virus spreads

easily from close contact. Singing and public speaking are two very good carriers of the disease. Not

gathering for worship or fellowship is not what we wish to happen. It hurts and it is difficult. But it is what

we do because we love our neighbors and work for the common good. Our faith leads us to practice love.

I hope someone might notice our actions – and our willingness to keep apart, and like Aristides,

might comment: “Behold, how they love one another!”

Sheltering in place is difficult for all of us. It is also difficult for our members who must continue

working. They worry about getting the virus and transmitting it to loved ones. We are living into what it

means to be the church in a pandemic. Let us text, email, Zoom, FaceTime, call and write letters and

cards to one another. Let us pray for thousands who have died of the disease. We have this time to cre-

atively love one another – by staying apart.

Pray Hard and Wash your Hands!

PROJECT SALINA

Since 1990, Project Salina, Inc. has been helping the fight against hunger in the greater Salina area

community.

OUR MISSION

Project Salina Inc. was founded in 1990 by Jack Parr and Jane Kramer. The need to help support the agencies

was significantly noted during the summer months, where the shelves would be bare and empty. This was

primarily due to the fact that the significant portion of the support and contributions that the agencies received

was during the holiday season, and unfortunately was just not enough to sustain the agencies through a whole

calendar year.

Although Project Salina Inc. currently supports five local agencies, that was not always the case. In the

beginning the original beneficiaries were The Emergency Aid Food Bank, The Salvation Army, and The Salina

Rescue Mission. As the community grew, the need did as well. Later, The Ashby House and Domestic Violence

Association of Central Kansas (DVACK) were on boarded as beneficiaries as well.

Project Salina Inc. is a 501 C non-profit organization. Our mission and sole purpose is to feed those in need in

the greater Salina Kansas communities.

Project Salina Inc. collects non-perishable food items and cash from local businesses from May 1 – May 31

each calendar year. Each participating business is assigned a food item to gather during the 31 day collection

period. The collections are then aggregated and allocated to the five local food agency beneficiaries (The

Emergency Aid Food Bank, The Salvation Army, The Salina Rescue Mission, The Ashby House, and the Domestic

Violence Association of Central Kansas – DVACK) based on demand.

Do to the pandemic, if you would like to support Project Salina you can write a check to Sunrise Presbyterian

Church . Please put in the memo line Project Salina. Mail to Sunrise Presbyterian Church 825 East Beloit,

Salina, KS, 67401. Thank you in advance for your help and support.

SUNRISE MARINERS NEWS

Hello everyone,

Thinking of warmer and calmer times, Mark your calendars now; Saturday, August 1st will be the

Ice Cream Social.

Matthew 25: 31 to 45

Hello everyone,

Where do we start? Please send your monthly pledges in to keep Sunrise serving others.

The Sunrise Scholarship Applications are due May 1st. The date was moved because of what is going on in the

world.

If you want to help our students please donate by writing it to Sunrise and writing scholarship fund in memo line.

The One Great Hour of Sharing was taken on Easter, but it can be given at any time.

At this writing we are hosting a supplemental government commodity distribution April 22nd. We are expecting

100 clients. In March we helped 50-60 clients. At distribution 188 families /530 people got some food.

Project Salina is this month. Project Salina is even more important this year. Like in the past $25 buys 50 cans of

soup or vegetables. Please send a donation. Write Project Salina in memo line.

You gave $200 to Emergency Aid Food Bank, $100 each to Ashby House, Salvation Army, and Salina Rescue

Mission. Some extra money over your regular monthly giving.

You gave to the Lingerie Shower. We will have a count later.

We are waiting to see if Castle is a go. There is time to decide. If it can be done, Castle will be even more important

to the kids.

The Prayer Shawl Ministry Meeting are on hold, but the ladies are making tiny pocket prayer shawls for families of

COVID-19 patients. They cannot be with their loved ones.

Ladies of Sunrise are also making masks for veterans and others.

Please pray for your mission committee, SPC, PNK, PCUSA, Salina, for Kansas, for our country and our world!

Pray for first responders and the people that keep us fed and clothed.

Thank you for what is good. Guide us to strive to be better in the things that are not good.

We are in this together!

FOOD BANK NEEDS FOR MAY May needs are: tuna, instant potatoes, rice, spaghetti, elbow macaroni egg noo-

dles, cold cereal, oatmeal, canned beans, pancake mix and syrup. Due to the

virus, the Food Bank is encouraging people to donate money. Please send your

check to Sunrise (825 East Beloit). Make your check out to Sunrise Presbyterian

Church and in the memo mark it Food Bank.

LINGERIE SHOWER FOR ASHBY HOUSE & DVACK

Often when the young women arrive at Ashby House or DVACK, they are badly in need of

underclothing. So, in May, Sunrise Presbyterian Church will collect lingerie for them. There

is a lovely lingerie chest (made by Steve & Jeanne Sebree) for the collection

point. HOWEVER, please don’t bring your items until it is safe, and the virus restrictions

have passed. Often Walmart and Kohls have very nice things in their clearance are-

as. With the virus at hand you might want to donate money instead. Make checks to Sun-

rise and in the memo line put May Lingerie Shower. Questions? Carol Viar

SEWING CLASS AT ASHBY HOUSE

When Sunrise is able to start up the sewing class, for the young women at Ashby

House, again they will need embroidery hoops. When it is save to come to

church again please donate embroidery hoops. If you have any questions please

contact Carol Viar. Thank in advance for your help!

STEWARDSHIP NEWS

When the Session voted to suspend our Worship service for 2 weeks, we also voted to continue the pay for

our nursery workers and our music folks. I tell you this because I want to make sure everyone realizes we

are continuing the business of the church. The lights are on, the heat is on, bills still need to be paid and our

staff still needs to be paid. Your continued donations will help to make this happen. Without your donation,

our cash flow will be challenging.

So please mail your donation, send it electronically, drop it off at the kitchen door mail slot. Heck, if you can,

maybe you can pay ahead by a few months.

Thanks for your timely consideration. Remember your prayers for all those effected.

BE KIND, BE SAFE

THE CASTLE PROJECT CELEBRATES 16 YEARS (HOPEFULLY) The CASTLE Project’s board and staff are working toward creative solutions that will allow CASTLE to

operate this summer when it is SAFE. Since our elementary children have not been in their normal

school setting for a couple of months, the children will need CASTLE more than ever before!!! Enroll-

ment is open to children kindergarten through 5th grade. Normally, the children come to Sunrise each

weekday morning for 8 weeks to participate in reading, art, physical education, music, science and

math. Things will probably look different this summer. Stay tuned for news about what CASTLE will

be able to do.

Registration forms will be quickly distributed if/when we are able to move forward.

Contact Carol Viar with questions. This is an important mission outreach of Sunrise to the children of

our community. Please pray that it will be safe for CASTLE kids and staff this summer.

PW News for May

There will not be any PW Circle meetings in May. Please everyone take care of yourself and don’t get out unless you

have to. We sure don’t want anyone to get this virus.

Katie Weis, Moderator

THANK YOU, LADIES! YOU’RE AMAZING!!!! More than 100 face masks have been made and donated by Sunrise ladies. They have been

distributed to the Veterans Clinic and to Ashby House. This will be an ongoing need for a while, so if

you haven’t made any masks, it’s not too late! There are a number of patterns available via the

internet. If you need help or fabric for masks or ties, please contact Carol Viar.

There is a tote in between the east doors of the church where you may drop off completed masks.

The masks will be picked up every few days. Thank you soooo much!.

THANK YOU VOLUNTEERS Huge thanks to the volunteers who made the disaster Household Distribution food distribution possi-

ble. Special thanks to Sylvia, who did most of the organizing. Our church has such a great

commitment to feeding the hungry.

Matthew 25: For I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat….just as you did it to least of these,

you did it to me.

Sunrise Friends, How fortunate we are to be a part of such a caring group. Sunrise Presbyterian Church has expressed their love for our family with the loss of our son, Jim. in

many ways. The food, flowers, phone calls, memorial gifts, cards and notes are such a support at this time. We appreciate everyone of them. Thank you all for

everything. Gary and Katie Weis

SUNRISE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH IN HONOR OF: In Honor of

Have you ever wanted to say “thank you” or maybe “atta boy” or “atta girl”, but you were looking for a way that was more than words? Have we got a deal for you. It’s called In Honor Of. This new opportunity will allow

individuals/couples/groups to donate to Sunrise Presbyterian Church to honor someone.

When would this be appropriate? Be creative, like any special occasion (wedding, graduation, anniversary,

birthday, etc.), for a job well done, as an act of friendship, to show concern, to show encouragement.

How do you do it, you ask? Pick up a form on the table across from the church office, fill it out, write a check, attach the check to the form and then put it in the collection plate or turn it into the church office. Easy Peasy.

Mission accomplished. Recognition given. You’ve made someone happy!

An announcement will be sent to the Honoree that a donation has been made in their honor. Both the giver’s

name and the honoree’s name will appear in the newsletter, although no dollar amount will be shared publicly.

AMERICAN RED CROSS REPORT FOR APRIL

This week went really well. Monday we were swamped and went 27 over goal, that was a great feeling!! Then

Tuesday, very-very slow, about 22 under goal, very disappointing. Then yesterday was very slow, pouring rain. Then,

the donors started pouring in after the rain subsided!! So we went a few over goal yesterday. In total, we were able

to get 197 units of life-saving blood!!! SUPER!! Thank you to everyone who was able to donate.

It was greatly needed!! The next Blood Mobile will be June 22, 23, and 24.

Have a great weekend, and stay well!!

God has not promised skies always blue, Flower-strewn pathways all our lives through;

God has not promised sun without rain, Joy without sorrow, peace without pain.

But God has promised strength for the day, Rest for the labor, light for the way,

Grace for the trials, help from above, Unfailing sympathy, undying love….
