We kicked off our season with a du against Bon Homme-Scotland-Avon Thursday, December 2. We fell short in a few matches Thursday night that the guys can grow from and use as fuel going forward. We also did a lot of good things in Thursday night’s action that we will build on going forward. I’m very excited for this team in the coming months as we continue to grow and improve throughout the season. We will have a very short turn around as we continue action Saturday, December 4 in Kimball for tournament style competition.

Wagner Opens 2021-2022 at #1 Winner

A day after the first storm of the year and a day delay to the start of the 2022 basketball season, Wagner hit the road to a much-anticipated matchup

with #1 Lady Winner Warriors. The first quarter would see the Lady Raiders pull out to a 12-10 lead. Winner would capitalize on Wagner’s 13 turn-

overs in the first half and take a 23-20 lead into half. Wagner would crank up the heat on defense allowing the Warriors to only manage 11 points the entire second half where the Raiders would score 21. Wag-ner would shoot 15-39 for 39% while holding Winner to 14-47 or 28%. Wagner would dom-inate the glass with a 39-22 ad-vantage. Wagner would com-mit 21 turnovers compared to 11 from Winner. The Raiders would hit 6-10 from the char-ity stripe while Winner would struggle 4-15. Emma Yost led all scorers with a double-dou-ble scoring 20 points, grabbing 13 boards, and dishing out 3 assists. Ashlyn Koupal would add 7 points, grabbing 6 boards, dish out 2 assists, and come away with 2 blocks off the bench. Lydia Yost would net 6 points and dish out 2 as-sists. Shalayne Nagel would add 3 points, grab 9 boards, dish out 3 assists and come away with a team high 3 steals. Macy Koupal would also add 3 points, grab 6 boards, dish out 2 assists, and grab 2 steals. Eve Zephier rounded out the

scoring with 2 points and dish-ing out 2 assists. “I can’t say enough about our girls! First of all, our goal was to control the glass and we did an excellent job of doing that. Second, we had to contain their scorer and use a variety of schemes to do that without giving up open looks to their off guards. Shalayne and Ashlyn drew the lucky straws to do just that allowing her to only score 18 for the game but only 5 the entire second half. 2 coming in the first 10 sec-onds on a set play. We turned it over a bit more than desired, but I thought when it came down to crunch time, we did a great job in the 4th quarter of taking care of the ball. We hit some big shots from the perim-eter, but we also had a lot that were right there and just didn’t fall.” The JV would drop their first game 47-16. Hayden Fischer would lead Wagner with 7 points. Aniyah Bruguier would add 6 and Tonnie Du-Pris 3.

Sometimes the hardest part of a journey in life is tak-ing that first step: deciding to actually do something! That would have to be the hardest decision that all of the Wagner Oral Interpretation students would have to make...It’s tak-ing that first step, deciding that, “Yes, I am going to go out for Oral Interp.” This tiny decision is the first step to unlocking so many doors for these students. You see, when these kids take on such a major task in choos-ing to be in Oral Interp, they are knocking through barriers that many other kids, as well as adults, may never be able to conquer. They are taking on public speaking and doing it in

the best way possible, through Oral Interpretation. The State Oral Interp Meet was held on Dec. 3-4 in Huron, SD.The Wagner Oral Interp Team really worked hard this year and took on great challenges in public speaking with several of the Oral Interp students taking on more than one role/category. The results of the state oral interp meet are as follows:The performances taken to state by Wagner were in the categories of Drama: Jenny Barnett, Reader’s Theater: Jackson Rolston, Trenton Rolston, Presley Slaba, and Macee Stimpson, Storytelling: Presley Slaba, Non-original

Oratory: Kathryn Doom, Duet: Presley Slaba and Jackson Rolston, Humorous: Trenton Rolston, and Poetry: Jenny Barnett.Receiving a medal in their cat-egory by earning a composite superior rating were:~Jenny Barnett in Drama. She chose a powerfully packed in-terpretation of “I’ll Always Know Where You Are.” ~Kathryn Doom in Non-Original Oratory with her “Steven Jobs’ 2005 Commencement Address”~Trenton Rolston in Humorous. He had a hilarious account of a young man attending a Comic book character convention in “Geek Fight.”~Jenny Barnett with her amaz-

ing selection of poems based on “Feminism.”With the team taking home their superior awards, and having points earned in every category at state, they also received The 2021 Team Excellence Award. This is an honor of the highest level for any team attending the state event. This has been a very reward-ing Oral Interp Season for the coaches and the students. The community and parental sup-port throughout this season has been phenomenal. Working with this elite group of students has been an awesome experi-ence. Both Coach Mudder and Coach Slaba were proud to be their coaches this season.
