Ta lk ing abou t t he inspiration behind the raga Pitambari he stated: “Once an astrologer suggested to wear a yel lowish-blue sapphire, which prompted me to rush to P.C. Chandra's jewelry shop; its bluish-yellow coloration which was instrumental in my conceiving of a lonely desert, where I visualized a white-marble temple; the

    temple was illumined by the full moon present in the d e e p - b l u e s k y a n d a penniless musician-beggar was playing this Raga Pitambari in his Sarangi wholeheartedly and devoted to the Almighty.” R e c o g n i t i o n o f Chattopadhyay's skills as an inventor of new ragas is a rare quality endowed among very few exponents of the genre came from Surtarang, Wolverhampton, London a n d f r o m L a t e P t . R a v i s h a n k a r . H i n d o l Chattopadhyay is now on the discovery of other newer, innovative ragas in the world of performing arts for the listening pleasure of both the performer and the H i n d u s t a n i m u s i c a c i o n a d o s s c a t t e r e d worldwide.

    Tribute to Suchitra Sen

Anit Mukerjea: As part of a tribute to yesteryear screen goddess Suchi t ra Sen, Basdroni Silpan, a local group theatre dramatized a Bengali play Suchitra-Uttam to a packed audience at the Academy of Fine Arts, on April 5. The theatrical concept and reinvention of the once popular duo of Tollywood is evidently the b r a i n c h i l d o f U j j a l Chattopadhyay. The story line is crafted through a play format in presenting to the audience another parallel theme that works on the innovative concept, of the two screen persona of these evergreen stars. Simika Roy in the lead role also doubles up as the director of this play. She manages to muster up her stage skills in an attempt to copy the yesteryear star with h e r a l l n e w d r a m a t i c interpretation. Of course the play has to be witnessed with an open mind despite the warts and all, with its surrealist approach leaning heavily on the comic and satirical device to keep the audience in good humour. This comes through in the b o d y l a n g u a g e w e l l synchronized by dialogue interactions. The aspiring star Chitra played by Simika Roy l eaves no s tones unturned to groom her image modeled on the legendary actor. While hallucinating, Chitra and Pranatosh feel the presence of the romantic duo appear inwardly guide them to achieve their goals. Desp i t e l im i t a t i ons S i m i k a R o y g i v e s a commendable performance only to be matched by Sudarshan Das's Pranatosh her tippler companion. Mention must be made of Papiya Das as the mobile obsessed friend of Chitra's. The play Uttam-Suchitra managed to bring about a pale revival of an era once dominated by the celluloid pair in the sphere of Bengali cinema.
