PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Hi All,
Now is the time to be getting excited about the upcoming National rally at Lardner Park. The cars should be
just about done (we hope) and we should be getting out the old costumes or putting the finishing touches to
the new ones ready for the dress up days. Have you contacted family and friends to invite them to the Family
Fun day on Wednesday September 28th? It should be a great day. All the hard work over the last three years
is finally coming together and I am looking forward to this event.
The president's Icicle rally was a good day. The weather was kind but some of the roads weren't.( see
article).
We still do not have anyone to run the March Labour day weekend rally. Even though your heads are
probably filled with thoughts of the 2016 rally please have a think about this. It would be great to get out and
see some more of Victoria.
On the good news front we have a new Editor for the magazine. His name is Chris Smith (Brian and Helen
Smith's son) We welcome him to the position and thank him for taking on this role. Please keep those
articles coming in.
One of our members added to the sick list is Bill Formby. He has had a stroke and is in hospital. We hope he
makes a full recovery.
Our next activity is the Auction night at the Friday meeting. Please bring out all those bits and pieces to
auction off. A reminder to please keep all parts etc on the tarp and off the floor.
Next activity is the Workshop day at Dillon's Motors on Saturday.. This is the last one before the 2016 rally
so get those cars over to Chris and make sure everything is in tip top shape.
Cheers
Fiona
Volunteers needed for the Online Broadcast of Monthly Members Meeting Trial
A Great opportunity to get your grand kids involved and to fall in love with

participate in a trial on the 12th of August 2016.
If you have Internet connectivity and have Skype or Facebook accounts,
we want to hear from you.
Please contact Preety Agarwal on 0420 364 039 or send an email to me at
This trial is limited to only the first 10 participants.
We encourage you to express your interest no later than 7th September 2016.

PRESIDENT’S ICICLE RALLY
Four cars left the Presidential palace at Warranwood for the President's run to Healesville.
It was a mostly sunny day which was good as the forecast had been fairly dismal earlier in the
week. We headed out through Warrandyte and the Bend of Islands towards Sugarloaf Reservoir
for morning tea. Driving along the picturesque Skyline Rd. Unfortunately the back gates into the
morning tea stop were locked so we made our way around the reservoir to the main entrance
gates. The main problem with this plan was the dirt roads were not that great and some damage
was done to Scott and Caree's car. I have now been dubbed "Dirt Road Dillon". Despite this we
had a very pleasant morning tea in the sun.
We headed out to Healesville through Yarra Glen and arrived at Badger Weir for lunch where we
were met by Andrew and Felicity Brand in the modern. We ate lunch with Brian and Helen Smith
reluctantly sharing their food with a very wily Kookaburra who seemed to get more cheese and
biscuits than they did!!

WESTERN AUSTRALIAN OUTING
The Ford Motor Company built the Factory, Offices and associated structures on a 7.5 acre site in
Leighton (North Fremantle) WA. They employed the local Perth Architects Oldham Boas and
Eddie-Brown. It was completed in 1929.
The design is iconic and very similar to many other Ford buildings around the world including Geelong
in Victoria.
Extensive use of “Curtain Glass Walling”(the use of glass without apparent structural support) gave a
lightness to the building from both inside and out. This was a design from approximately 1911. Henry
Ford used natural lighting at Highland Park, the so called “Crystal Palace” of Dearborn.
Prior to the completion of Ford’s “new building” Model T’s were assembled in a Dalgety owned
woolshed situated closer to the waterfront between the now rail track and Stirling Highway.
The oldest surviving photo shows workers assembling what appears to be 1925 model vehicles and
definitely pre 1926.
This building in North Fremantle was sold in 1987 shortly after Ford closed down all local working
operations.
Vehicles were never actually “manufactured” there but assembled only. Later it remained as a damage
rectification/ distribution centre for vehicles arriving from the Eastern States. Tractor assembly
continued til the final days in the mid 80’s.
The current owners were talking about demolishing the site and building residential apartments. With
the current economic downturn this maybe on the back burner for now.

SEA, MOUNTAINS & VALLEYS TOUR T 2016
Facebook: Model T '2016 Sea, Mountains and
Valleys Tour T National Rally
Sat September 24 - Sun October 2, 2016 [email protected]
Dear Club members,
As we write this contribution to T Torque, we near the end of nearly four years of planning and we are
confident that all our hard work will pay off. This will enable Tour entrants to enjoy a great week’s
touring in a magnificent area of Victoria and Australia, and above all, maintain a tradition of our club
hosting great events!
As we near the end of planning, we are sad to pass on the news that Tour Director, David Dare has
resigned from the Tour committee for personal reasons, and will take no further participation in the
event. The remaining Tour committee members are committed to completing David’s vision for a Tour
in his own Gippsland area, and his unique stamp on this event will be acknowledged as various parts of
the tour unfold. A big part of David’s planning has been to add two additional tours to the event to
ensure all entrants see as much of Gippsland as possible.
Since hosting the last National Tour in 2008, the use of social media has boomed. We have established a
new Facebook page for this event and we encourage all our club members to follow our adventures
during the week. Please like it and share with your friends so they are ready to follow the Tour as it
unfolds. A pre tour bus trip has been arranged for our International guests to the well-known Healesville
Sanctuary. Additional seats are available on this tour @ $50 per head. This will provide a fantastic
opportunity to get to know our international guests before the start of the Tour. Please contact Joss
Sanderson at [email protected] to book your seat. MTFCV members not registered on the Tour are
invited to participate in this event.
If you have not already indicated a desire to carry some of our International guests as passengers during
the Tour, please contact our tour rides coordinator, David Baud at [email protected] This will be a
great opportunity to show our guests some of our Aussie hospitality and ensure a memorable tour for
them.
We take this opportunity to extend an invitation to all MTFCV members, not entered on the Tour, to
come and join us on Wednesday 28th September, at Lardner Park, Burnt Store Road, Warragul South
from 10:00am to 4pm. This very special day is open to the public and will see entrants T’s at play and a
number of very special stall holders and exhibits on display. For the duration of the event, with the
exception of Wednesday, access to the Lardner Park site will be restricted to entrants only but feel free
to visit us on the road at any of our tour destinations during the week.
We wish all MTFCV members good luck with their final preparations on their new restorations or
maintenance and we wish you safe travel to Gippsland.
We are looking forward to catching up with all our members at Lardner.
Your Rally Committee.

A brief history of The Model T Ford Snowmobile
The Snowmobile Company, Inc. – West Ossipee, NH
Burr!!! Old Man Winter made his unwelcome return to the North Country. Coaxing the sleepy Model T out of the shed would
take a major effort, now. Jack up one rear wheel, push the brake lever all the way ahead, pour hot water into the radiator, and
start cranking. Trying to push the magnets of the flywheel through the molasses-like oil in the pan made one wonder if the trip
to town couldn’t wait until spring. Time to drain the oil into a can and set it on the cook stove for a spell.
In 1917 Virgil D. White received a patent for an attachment designed to convert a Model T into a 'Snowmobile,' a name coined
and copyrighted by White. White, a Ford dealer in Ossipee, New Hampshire, built his first snowmobile attachment 1913.
He put it on the market during the winter of 1922 after 'perfecting it in every detail,' selling the attachments exclusively through
Ford dealers. The Snowmobile attachment consisted of the complete package necessary to convert a Ford into a reliable snow
machine. Skis made of metal and wood and rear mounted tracks were the most noticeable differences.
The standard passenger car rear axle and driveshaft, rear spring, and radius rods were removed and replaced with a 7 to 1 Ford
truck worm gear drive line attached to the frame by a pair of cantilevered semi-elliptical springs. Special heavy-duty wheels to
fit the TT rear axle were provided along with anti-skip chains.
The earliest units sold by White included tracks made of metal cleats joined by a heavy fabric. White later switched to all metal
tracks consisting of stamped steel shoes connected by chain links. Additions to the Snowmobile attachment in later years
included a special box attached to the left frame for the battery displaced by the idler axle. A cast iron step sporting the
Snowmobile insignia took the place of running boards, which were removed to allow room for the track system.
The “Ford on Snowshoes," was offered in three different gauges. For those living where automobiles were standard 56 inch
gauge was recommended. A narrower 44-inch gauge allowed driving the Ford in the tracks of horse-drawn bobsleds.
Thirty-eight inch gauge was offered for Ford owners where narrower sleigh tracks were standard, such as in parts of Canada. A
special slip-on body of hard maple with four coats of paint was included as part of the narrow gauge packages.
The Snowmobile became an indispensable convenience for the person requiring rapid, dependable transport in all kinds of
weather. Country doctors and rural mail carriers were the largest users of this type of vehicle. Other customers of the
manufactured Snowmobile included public utility companies, lumber companies, traveling salesmen, fire departments, school
bus and taxi drivers, undertakers, grocers, milkmen, truckers and cranberry growers. When the father of President Calvin
Coolidge died on March 18, 1926, a Model T Snowmobile led the Coolidge funeral procession over the snow-covered hills of
Vermont.
Page 11 MODEL T TORQUE SEPTEMBER 2016
Ford Model T with Snow Attachment, 1921
In the early 20th century, rural mail carriers who purchased automobiles for their routes learned quickly that their new cars were
often no match for deep snow.
In 1906, Virgil White began converting automobiles into snowmobiles by replacing the front tires with skis and the rear tires with
caterpillar treads, allowing the vehicle to move easily over snow and ice. The attachment, name Snowbird, saved carriers the ex-
pense of purchasing and maintaining a horse and sled for winter deliveries.
White’s first prototype used a Buick Model G. After the Model T’s popularity made it the go-to car of the early 20th century,
White began manufacturing Ford Model T kits.
By 1922, White began selling his kit for $250 to $400 from his snowmobile company in West Ossippe, N.H. A few years later, he
sold his snowmobile patents to the Farm Specialty Manufacturing Co. of New Holstein, Wis., which quickly recognized the kit’s
appeal to rural carriers and advertised it as the “Mailman’s Special.” It was promoted as easy to install.
This 1921 Ford Model T was owned by rural mail carrier Harold Crabtree of Central Square, N.Y. The vehicle is fitted with the
“Mailman’s Special.”
This item is one of 137 million artifacts, works of art and specimens in the Smithsonian’s collection. It is not on display.

Cont….
Makers of the attachment claimed the ability to travel over two and a half feet of unbroken snow at an average speed of 18
miles per hour. Those who had a Snowmobile certainly used it with great satisfaction. The conversion kits were quite
expensive. The attachment in 44 inch or 38 inch gauge for mounting on a roadster, or the 56 inch gauge for all body styles
prior to 1926, listed at $395.00 F.O.B., West Ossipee, New Hampshire. A 56-inch gauge attachment for the one ton truck was
less expensive at $250.00 because no special driveline and suspension were needed. Heavy duty 30 x 30-1/2-inch - wheels
were still provided to mount on the rear axle, however. With skis removed and front wheels installed; the Snowmobile
became a Sandmobile, useful for transport through deep mud and heavy sand. A number of units sold as Sandmobiles were
used in South Africa, Algeria, Egypt, and the Florida Everglades. In 1923, White produced only about 70 units. By 1925,
manufacturing rights to produce snow automobile attachments were sold to Farm Specialty Manufacturing Company of New
Holstein, Wisconsin, which began to market its version of the product in 1926.
Farm Specialty Manufacturing Company later bought the patents of the Snowmobile Company and sent its managers to run the
factory in West Ossipee. From 1924 to 1929, the Snowmobile Company manufactured about 3,300 units per year in its plant at
West Ossipee and had a branch warehouse at St. Paul, Minnesota. The Snowmobile Company closed in 1929, and the factory
mysteriously burned down shortly thereafter.

Johnson Farm
Snowmobile Meet - Recap
Laundromat Road
Thornton, NH
Saturday January 17, 2015 - 9 AM
There was a very good turnout at Johnson Farm in Thornton, NH on a cold, clear and thankfully wind free day. There were 6
Model T and 2 Model A Snowmobiles at the meet, along with a large gathering of Tucker Sno-Cats a truly amazing machine.
Several modern Snowmobile Clubs provided trail-grooming services for the event. Food and beverages were available in the
garage, which also was also a great place to warm up and get out of the cold.
One of the Tucker Sno-Cats broke a rear axle and was retrieved by a flat bed ramp truck. With a couple of hours of work the
axle was replaced and the Tucker was back out on the trails.
There has not been a whole lot of snow in the Thornton area this winter so far, but there was more than enough to run the
machines. The Johnson Farm location is a great place to run a snowmobile with a variety of roads and terrain. It is an easy
location to find, located just about 2 miles from interstate 93.
The publicity (Newspapers & Television) generated a substantial number of spectators. Thanks to all who participated and
organized the event.
