Over 37 Years of Snowdrifter Fun; Ski & Ride, We’ve Just Begun !!
Volume 37 Number 1 February/March 2014
I hope everyone had a great holiday
season. We had a great turn out at the
December meeting. Members were in a joy-
ous mood and I’m sure that we helped
make a great Christmas for many children
with our support to the Toys for Tots Foun-
dation. We were very fortunate that
Corporal Yon and Sergeant Hodge could
join us. We filled the box with toys and
donated over $170 dollars to the founda-
tion. I want to thank all of you that partici-
pated, you made me proud to be part of
your club.
I know that everyone has heard about
the drought this year in California and
some of you saw it on our first trip while
watching the Olympic Trials at Mammoth.
However, I will tell you that our home
mountain has stepping up this year and is
doing a great job with their snow farming
operations. So continue to sign up for the
trips because you will have a great time
with us and I know that snow is on the
way. Until it gets here please continue to
help us out by wishing for snow. I’m sure
Woolly is talking to his friends from his
younger days like Ullr, Shirahime-Syo and
the Snow Dog. The weather people have
reported that the arctic weather patterns
will be changing soon and will bring the
cold snowy weather to us instead of the
Midwest.
Everyone has been anxious to hear
about the new condos; Chateau Sans Nom.
I have to say that our Travel Director,
WHAT’S INSIDE !! Edie Pike did a great job with this selection.
All of the units are large and have a great lay-
out. All of the units are very clean with up to
date amenities. Chateau Sans Nom even has a
nice indoor hot tub and pool. Now you can go
from the hot tub to the heated pool to cool
down when needed. This is much better than
sitting on the edge of the hot tub in freezing
weather to cool off and it will end the mad
dash from the changing room to the hot tub.
The complex layout is easy to get from one unit
to the other without a long walk. Unlike our
previous condos where you had a long walk
from the bus to condo 9. I think this is a great
improvement. So continue to sign up for the
rest of the trips this year and check out our
new accommodations.
Once again, we are starting the election
process for next year’s board of directors. As
usual, we will be electing the next President,
Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary. We
also have 9 other appointed positions on the
board that are just as important. Because there
are so many of them, I will not list them, but I
recommend that you take a few minutes and
see what they are. They are listed in the news-
letter and on the website. Because we are al-
ways working at improving the club, I am ask-
ing you to think about helping out one of the
board members with their job this year as an
assistant. This will give you the chance to give
back to the club and help us to continue grow
into the future.
Today I am letting everyone know that
Debi Young our awarding wining newsletter
editor is stepping down from the board. We will
miss the work that she has done for us in the
past three years, but she is moving on to accom-
plish the other goals she has in her life. She is
always trying new things and setting new goals
for herself. We are glad that she will still be

Hello Snowdrifters The ski season is in full gear. We are looking forward to
snow and good weather. Our February trip leaves late after-
noon on Thursday, February 20 and returns Sunday, February
23. The trip is full, but you can be put on the waiting list. Call
Lina Arnold Or Debi Young at the phone number below if you
wish to join us. For people who wish to do other things be-
sides ski, there are many alternatives—off mountain activities,
social mixers, and shopping. We also have a chance to watch
and cheer our members race. Yes, Mammoth is an entire ex-
perience: vacation, sport, and social fun! Pray for snow.
Our January trip did not have much snow but everyone still
seemed to have a good time anyway. I heard good report
about our new condos. Many said condos are better than Cha-
teau Blanc. Thanks to Gates and Chris for giving us a great
and successful trip. The bus and bus driver were terrific. We
have Jim driving the bus again this year. Yeah!
We have three trips left, so check out the Flyers on our web
site or in our Newsletter. The February and March trips are
full, but you can place your name on a waiting list. April trip
still has some spaces available. If you come to our monthly
club meetings you can obtain additional information by
speaking with our Trip Leaders or members who are going on
the scheduled trips. You may also call the trip leaders directly,
their phone numbers and dates of each trip our listed below
and on the Ski Trip Schedule toward the back of this
newsletter.
If you are a member, come and join in on the ski trip fun; if
you are not, join the club and participate with us. If you do not
ski, but like to have a good time, come and join us on the Mam-
moth trips. There is plenty to do – off the slopes as well.
All Mammoth trips cost $310 per person.
The THREE Remaining Mammoth Mountain Ski
Trips are:

member of the club and continue to add her sprit of adven-
ture and her friendship to our lives. Therefore, this will leave
us with some big shoes to fill in our board as our newsletter
editor. So we are looking for someone who would like to be a
part of publishing an award winning newsletter. Please con-
tact me at [email protected] if you are interested. This
is a great opportunity to learn about editing and publishing
with Microsoft Publisher.
Again, it is time for me to hand the story telling over to
our board members, where they will tell you what is com-
ing up in the next two months, they are the ones with the
details. Until April make the best of every day and have
fun this snow season. Know that you are what makes this
one of the best clubs in the state because you are the heart

makes it all possible. Dave

FUN WITH FRIENDS:
The 6TH Annual Gaslamp Pet Parade was so much fun. We met at Seaport Village
and ate lunch at KC Barbecue. Then headed over a couple blocks to the parade starting line . Entered in the parade were
kitties, bunnies, iguanas, a large variety of dogs & puppies dressed up for the holidays and their crazy owners dressed to
match! We had so much fun that we will definitely do this event again next year.
Cookie Exchange & Jewelry Party was another successful event during the holidays. We purchased some amazing gifts for
friends. There was also plenty or cookies to fill up many hungry holiday shoppers.
Thanks Shannon Miller for the fun evening watching Warren Miller movies & eating at Coyote’s in Carlsbad.
Our recent bike ride headed up by Stephanie Young was tons of fun and we sure
needed it after all of the holiday eating!
MJ & Dave hosted another fun time on the monthly Beer Bus out of North Park.
We sure had fun shopping on Cedros in Solana Beach which involved breakfast,
wine tasting from Carruth Cellars, shopping (of course) & lunch.
UPCOMING Events:
February & March - are open for activity ideas from all you members. Wouldn’t
your like to take a few hikes. Any volunteers? Another bike ride would be fun. Any volunteers to organize one? Or just pick a
date & we can make it happen.

interesting places. Go to: www.great-news.com under classes and scroll down to 3/1/2013 #1403014, or call Great News 888-478-

fun event. We will meet at The Rainbow Inn for a "hometown breakfast" then walk next door for a very fun shopping experi-

The Green Dragon Tavern & Museum. This is an amazing new place directly off the 5 freeway. It is a replica of the old taverns
in New England & has a great restaurant & bar, it should be open next month. We will keep you posted.

Running Versus
Walking: What's
Best?
On the face of it, you might figure that when covering the
same distance—say, a mile—you would burn the same num-
ber of calories whether you walk or run. After all, while
walking is less strenuous, it takes longer for a walker to
cover the distance.
But running requires much more effort than walking—
you're actually jumping from one foot to the other as you
propel yourself forward, a major muscular undertaking.
Bottom line: running burns 50 percent more calories than
walking over any given distance, even though running takes
less time.
Still, I think walking is the best exercise choice for most of
us, particularly as we get older. Walking may not burn as
many calories as running, but it offers the great advantage of
being a practical substitute to driving for short trips, since
you can do it in street clothes and you don't typically arrive
in need of a shower. Further, it requires no skill or practice.
Everyone knows how to do it, and the only equipment you
need is a good pair of shoes. You can walk outdoors or in-
doors (in shopping malls, for example). It is the safest exer-
cise option of all, with the least chance of injury.
The key to making walking pay off is to do it briskly.
Aerobic walking cannot be casual or intermittent. Keep at it
until you can walk about three miles in forty-five minutes.
Doing this at least five times a week is one of the best moves
you can make for a lifetime of health.

Season Opener Review:
Trip Leaders—Gates
Ingram and Chris Polta:
The Season Opener to Mammoth left
with 51 snow hungry people, 5 of which
were kids that raced and won recognition (See Lina's Racing
article). Warned that the conditions were marginal, it was a
shock to see the Face of #3 exposed rock as well as Spook, all
of the top area fed by lifts #12, #25, and a danger sign at #5
indicating EXPERTS ONLY. There was skiable snow, but
caution was the word of the day as any man-made snow was
often scraped away exposing icy conditions soon after the
first hour the lifts were open. Following Friday’s dinner, a
dessert party was held to bring everyone together to share
all the details of the days events.
The group broke into 2 separate parties on Saturday: one
being a beer tasting at the Mammoth Brewery with pizza; the
other a pizza party for the rest in one of the condos. All had a
great time. We found the new condos to be slightly larger,
with 3 bedrooms & 2 bathrooms on the bottom floor, and a
full master suite on the top floor. It's a pleasant upgrade in
all ways from Chateau Blanc.
On Sunday with the great sunshine and warm temps, we
again broke into 2 groups: those who wished to ski & an-
other which went to Mary's Lake are to hike & relax. Many
left the slopes early to catch the Chargers final game before
departing for home.
