Epiphany Blessing of the Home It is a customary practice that on the Feast of the

Epiphany, the faithful bless their homes using chalk

by writing the following formula: 20 + C + M + B +

18. The “20” and “18” denote the calendar year

and the “+” denotes the cross of Christ. The letters

“C,” “M,” and “B” denote the names of the wise

men (Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar) as well as

the Latin phrase Christus mansionem benedicat (“May Christ bless this house.”). This blessing is a

request that Christ will bless the house and all those

living in it throughout the calendar year.

Leader: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Leader: Peace be to this house and all who enter here. All: And with your spirit. At this point, the gospel story of the magi can be

read (Matthew 2:1-12).

After the reading, the leader uses the blessed chalk

to write 20+C+M+B+18 above the doorway.

Leader: Lord God of heaven and earth, you revealed your only-begotten Son to every nation by the guid-ance of a star. Bless this house and all who inhabit it. Fill us with the light of Christ, that our concern for others may reflect your love. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. RITUAL SONG HYMNAL UPDATE We are thankful to all who have helped defray of the cost of the new Ritual Song hymnal that we are soon planning to introduce here at St. Clement of Rome in January. We have received about 150 hymnal donations and would like to extend the period of accepting contributions. You can find envelopes/forms in the foyer of the Church or in the Parish Center. This is a great opportunity to dedicate a hymnal in memoriam to a beloved family member or for an occasion you may wish to honor. Donation is $18.00 per book.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Where on earth would you go to honor the magi? Iran or Saudi Arabia, Tarshish or the Isles come to mind, but Cologne, Germany would be a good choice. There the Shrine of the Three Kings has been the centerpiece of the city’s cathedral since the fourth century. Today it is the largest reliquary in the world: a gilded and ornamented triple casket gleam-ing high above the altar. In the fourth century, the supposed relics of the wise men were taken from Constantinople to Milan, where they remained until the German Emperor with the unlikely name Freder-ick Barbarossa (Red Beard) gave them to the Archbishop of Cologne. Ever since, pilgrims have streamed into the city to honor the magi, the first of all pilgrims, and thus the heavenly patrons of all who have some holy wanderlust. This largest Gothic cathedral in Europe today was begun in the mid-1200s to house the relics. In medie-val times, the relics in a city’s possession were often the key to a sound international economy. The reli-quary was last opened in 1864, and the remains of three men were indeed discovered. The cathedral is well worth a visit, with enormous twin spires forming the largest façade of any church in the world (it is the model for St. Patrick’s in New York). Construction began in 1248 and ended in 1880, a six-hundred-year project. Today, it is a World Heritage Site, described by the U.N. as “an exceptional work of human crea-tive genius.” This great treasure of our tradition suf-fered fourteen direct bomb hits in World War II but did not collapse. It survived while the city burned around it, preserved, the townspeople say, by three heavenly patrons.

GOD’S PROMISE TO ALL PEOPLE

Today Isaiah reminds the people of God that the land shall be restored to their possession, they shall rejoice to see their people return from the bondage of exile, and that they shall be a light to the nations. In other words, through the people of Israel, the Savior shall come to all people who seek God with a sincere heart. This brings joy and the radiance of God’s glory to all the world and to all people eve-rywhere. Through the fidelity of the people of God, and through God’s fidelity to them, all people shall become God’s children and rejoice in the fulfillment of God’s promise to Israel.

LORD OF ALL

Saint Paul was born and brought up as a Jew, deeply aware of the Jewish people as the Chosen Race. Thanks to his education by rabbis, Paul was steeped in the Hebrew scriptures, which emphasized God’s particular love for Jews. Paul expected a Jew-ish Messiah for the Jews, and may well have be-lieved such a one would be a great military or royal leader like King David. Jesus did not fit that profile. Paul was ardent in his conviction that all those who believed Jesus was the promised Savior were de-luded and dangerous, and he was willing to hunt them down and kill them off. After his vision of Je-sus on the road to Damascus, Paul’s change of heart and mind was profound. All his preconceptions were wrong. He was wrong about Jesus and wrong about Jesus’ followers. He was wrong about the Messiah being only for the Jews. Paul was a remarkable man who was prepared to admit that he was wrong! He knew that he had been given an insight into the mys-tery of God’s grace, hidden until the world was ready. God’s love and grace are universal and no hu-man being is beyond that love; only those who choose not to receive it cannot benefit from God’s grace. He was certain that those who were not Jews were also called to be part of the body of Christ. This was an astounding idea and, at first, brought conflict with apostles such as Peter. Yet these convictions took Paul and his companions out into the world around the Mediterranean on long and dangerous journeys. Jesus was born a Jew in Bethlehem yet, as Risen Lord, he is Lord of all nations and peoples. Paul knew this. It changed his mind. It changed his heart. It changed the world.

SEÑOR DE TODOS San Pablo era judío y se crió como tal, bien consciente de que los judíos componían el pueblo escogido. Por la educación que recibió de los rabinos Pablo conocía bien las Escrituras hebreas, las cuales enfatizaban el amor particular de Dios por los judíos. Pablo esperaba un mesías judío para los judíos y es probable que haya pensado que tal mesías sería un gran militar o un líder de la realeza como el rey Da-vid. Pero ésas no eran las descripciones de Jesús. Pa-blo estaba fervientemente convencido de que todos los que creían que Jesús era el Salvador prometido estaban engañados o eran peligrosos y él estaba dis-puesto a perseguirlos y matarlos. Después de su vi-sión de Jesús en Damasco Pablo tuvo un cambio pro-fundo de mente y corazón. Todas las cosas que él había preconcebido estaban equivocadas. Él estaba equivocado en cuanto a Jesús y en cuanto a sus discí-pulos. Estaba equivocado acerca de que el Mesías vendría sólo para los judíos. ¡Pablo era un hombre excepcional y estaba dispuesto a admitir que estaba equivocado! Sabía que se le había concedido un en-tendimiento exhaustivo del misterio de la gracia de Dios, que estaría escondida hasta que el mundo estu-viese listo. El amor y la gracia de Dios son universa-les y ese amor no es inalcanzable para ningún ser humano; sólo aquellos que rehúsan recibirlo no se beneficiarán de la gracia de Dios. Pablo está ahora seguro de que los que no eran judíos también eran parte del Cuerpo de Cristo. Esto era algo asombroso y al principio trajo conflictos con apóstoles como Pedro. Y sin embargo estas convicciones de Pablo lo llevaron a él y a sus compañeros a largos y peligro-sos viajes alrededor del Mediterráneo. Jesús era judío y nació en Belén, sin embargo, el Señor resucitado, es Señor de todas las naciones y personas. Pablo sab-ía esto y el saberlo le cambió su forma de pensar, le cambió el corazón y cambió el mundo.
