Orchestra

Choir Festival The St. Barnabas Senior Choir has a long tradition of taking a Sunday at the end of the program year to share some of their favorite anthems from the past year. This year’s festival will take place on Sunday, May 19. Among the anthems they have chosen to sing are:

Ubi Caritas – Mark Burrows Even When He is Silent – Kim André Arnesen To Dust – Karen Marrolli

May 18-19: Jazz

Choir Festival Offering of Letters

St. Barnabas Orchestra - May 12 The St. Barnabas Orchestra (SBO) will play at the coffee hour after both services on Sunday, May 12. The theme is Music from the Movies. The SBO is a multi-generational orchestra comprised of professionals, amateurs, former and current band/orchestra students, beginners, members, non-members - basically, anyone who wants to come play with us and have a good time. The tunes are arranged with separate parts for less experienced students and more demanding parts for those who've been playing awhile (and who have kept their chops up!). It’s always a lot of fun and greatly appreciated by the congregation (and visitors). The tunes are sent out ahead of time, then we meet for one rehearsal on Saturday, May 11 from 1-2:30 p.m. If you are interested in participating but have not yet contacted Jeff Whitmill, get in touch with him as soon as possible so he can have music ready for you. Jeff’s phone is 763-438-4847 and his e-mail is [email protected].

Blood Drive - May 11 The Memorial Blood Center is bringing its Bloodmobile to St. Barnabas on Saturday, May 11, from 8-1:00. Sign up in the narthex or contact Connie Cook by phone (763-557-7064) or email ([email protected]).

Better Nutrition, Better Tomorrow is the focus of the 2019 Bread for the World “Offering of Letters.” Bread for the World is a non-partisan Christian organization that advocates for those who do not have enough food. The following comes from the Bread for the World website (www.bread.org): Over the past several decades, the world—with a strong commitment from the United States—has made great progress toward ending hunger by promoting global nutrition programs. Hunger and poverty rates have been cut nearly in half during the past 30 years. In countries such as Ghana and Honduras, stunting—when a child does not grow and develop properly because of chronic malnutrition—has been reduced by nearly one-third in approximately 10 years. We have the tools to move toward our goal of ending hunger. Good nutrition during the 1,000-day period from the beginning of a woman’s pregnancy to her child’s second birthday is critical to a child’s health and future well-being. As people of faith, we are called to care for one another and speak out for those in need. Bread for the World’s 2019 Offering of Letters: Better Nutrition, Better Tomorrow urges our government to accelerate progress toward ending hunger by increasing funding for global child nutrition programs.

Bread for the World “Offering of Letters”

These Letter Make a Difference!

The 2018 Offering of Letters was victorious in securing passage of

the Global Food Security Reauthorization Act with

overwhelming bipartisan support. The bill ensured that the Feed the Future initiative would continue to support smallholder farmers and

improve the nutrition needs of women and children around the

world. And while Congress ended the year having not approved all its funding bills, both the House and the Senate appropriations

committees increased funding for global nutrition. Congress also

approved a Farm Bill that protects the Supplemental Nutrition

Assistance Program (SNAP) and improves international food aid

programs. And before the end of the year, Congress approved the

First Step Act, a bipartisan criminal justice reform bill that

addresses mass incarceration—a major cause of hunger in the

United States.

Today, nearly 821 million people in the world—11 percent of the world’s population—remain hungry. One in 4 of the world’s children are affected by stunting, resulting in irreversible life consequences. Countries in Central America, South Asia, and Sub-Saharan Africa are disproportionately affected. Almost half of all child deaths worldwide are linked to malnutrition. To accelerate progress on nutrition, we must scale up what we know works: improved access to nutritious foods, vitamins and minerals, clean water and sanitation, promotion of breastfeeding, and treatment for severe malnutrition. Current funding is not enough to reach our global nutrition goals, and powerful political forces are pushing to curtail poverty-focused assistance. Nutrition for children experiencing hunger is a bipartisan issue that will draw support from people in churches across the country, people of goodwill, and leaders from both political parties in Washington, D.C. At a time of sharp political division in our country, participating in the Offering of Letters can unite Americans around a common cause for which millions stand to gain. On Saturday, May 18 and Sunday, May 19, information and materials to write a short letter will be available before and after worship services in the Ministry Center.

Thank you, Quilters! The sanctuary will be filled with quilts on May 12, the handiwork of a group of talented women who meet three Friday mornings a month to make quilts for Lutheran World Relief and the neo-natal unit and hospice at North Memorial Hospital. The quilters have ongoing expenses to purchase batting and other supplies to make the quilts. For a gift of $50 (or more!), you can purchase one of the quilts this weekend and thereby enable the quilters to purchase the supplies to make many more quilts. The quilters will be present after worship to receive your gift (make checks payable to St. Barnabas) and you may take the quilt of your choice home with you.

Let There be Peace on Earth – arr. Mary MacDonald

My Soul’s Been Anchored in the Lord – Moses Hogan

Many thanks to Jeff Whitmill, Mark Rodriguez, and all the choir members who have given so many hours this past year to provide our worship services with great music!

May “Gift of Love” for Luther Park Scholarships Luther Park Camping & Retreat Center is a Christ-centered outdoor ministry of the ELCA, located in northwestern, Wisconsin, on the shores of beautiful, spring-fed Lake 26. Surrounded by hundreds of acres of forest land and trails, the camp is seven miles east of Danbury, Wisconsin. Campers and retreaters who come to Luther Park live together in small groups, participating in worship and learning activities as well as in relationship-building and recreational opportunities. Each individual is challenged and given the opportunity to speak out, to take part in leadership, to experience

spiritual growth, to develop outdoor skills and to grow socially. Staff and campers work together with the help of God to create an intentional community where the love of God and God’s people is an experienced reality. St. Barnabas is one of 40 member congregations of the Luther Park Association. St. Barnabas’ annual contribution to Luther Park has remained at $1500 for several years. This month’s “Gift of Love” will provide scholarships so that every St. Barnabas kid who wants to go to camp will be able to.

New Leadership Teams Needed for Families Moving Forward Two important summer ministries at St. Barnabas are in need of new leadership teams. St. Barnabas will host Families Moving Forward twice this summer — the weeks of June 30-July 6 and July 7-13 (back-to-back). Two people are needed to serve as the “lead contacts” for this ministry to those who are homeless. There will be many who will volunteer to provide meals, childcare, and serve as overnight

hosts, but some folks with organizational skills are needed for these leadership positions. Leadership materials from past years are available. If you are interested in getting involved with Families Moving Forward, contact Pastor Wayne.

This Is Important!

St. Barnabas and Peace Lutheran Church will join forces for a mission trip to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota July 27-August 4. There will actually be two concurrent trips: an adult/family trip that will spend the entire week at Pine Ridge, and a High School trip that will spend the first half of the week in the Black Hills and then join the other group at Pine Ridge for the second half of the week.

Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota is

home to the Oglala Lakota Tribe with an estimated population of close to 40,000. The reservation is large, and its needs immense, commensurate with grinding poverty.

The Pine Ridge Reservation has been designated as one of the poorest areas in the United States. The Reservation has few natural resources and no industry. Many residents travel more than 120 miles to Rapid City for seasonal employment. Tribal and federal governments provide the few jobs that are available on the Reservation: only one Oglala in five has a job. Medical care on the Reservation is inadequate, and many tribal members forego medical attention because of the long distance to medical facilities. In addition, housing on the Reservation also does not meet the tribal members’ needs. A severe housing shortage forces hundreds into homelessness while thousands of others live in overcrowded, substandard accommodations.

Pine Ridge is Destination for Adult/Family and High School Mission Trips July 27-August 4

Wayne & Lori Fredrickson have been engaged in volunteer work at Pine Ridge for several years and have cultivated deep relationships with some of the people. We will be using their connections to plan the service projects for the week. At the end of the week, we will conclude with their annual pow wow and participate with them in their traditions and sacred celebrations

Sue Megrund will serve as the St. Barnabas point person for both the adult/family trip and the high school youth trip.

Sue, Wayne, and Lori will offer an information meeting Sunday, May 5, from 11:30-12:30 in the Ministry Center Alcove. Wayne and Lori to share their passion and experiences with the Pine Ridge community. After being part of many trips out there, they said that “you don’t change Pine Ridge, Pine Ridge changes you.”

Costs for the adult/family trip are not yet identified. The cost for the high school trip will be right around $700. This will include most of the meals, sightseeing and accommodations. There will be some meals (fast food price) that participants will be responsible for on some of the travel days. We will have some fundraising and financial aid is available as well.

“Aging with Gusto” is a 3-part series, meeting Tuesdays, June 4, 11, & 18 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at St. Barnabas. It provides an opportunity for you to examine your views on aging, understand the influences on your views and adopt a more positive narrative about what it means to age. This is a brand new program produced by the Fairview Foundation. St. Barnabas has been selected to be the very first place it is offered. For that reason, the Fairview Foundation is picking up all costs — including lunch at each session. Join Parish Nurse Rose Umland for this series of three sessions to:

Gypsy Mania (hot club swing jazz)

A spontaneous, vivid performance by some of Minnesota’s most stellar gypsy-jazz artists played in the Django Reinhardt

French swing tradition of the 1930’s. It’s exciting, it’s toe-tapping, it’s a great evening out.

Jazz@St. Barney’s

Last fall we started a new strategy of staffing the important hospitality ministry of serving coffee after worship, asking every St. Barnabas household to help one time during the year for 45 minutes. (Those with health issues are, of course, not expected to help with this.) This does not involve baking! Thus far the strategy gets a solid “B” — doing pretty well, but with definite room for improvement. We have had “no shows” a couple of times, but others have graciously stepped up to help out. We have received many positive comments that this is just after one service instead of after both services (as it used to be). And for the most part, people are very willing to take a turn once each year. As we head into the summer months (which is the end of the year rotation), we thought it would be beneficial to remind everyone of the process.

Four households serve each Sunday — two from 9:45-10:30 and two from 11:15-12:00. The task is simply to set the treats out, make coffee as needed, and wash the dishes. Hosts attend worship first, leaving after they have received communion in order to get coffee and treats ready. “First Service” hosts need to be in the kitchen at 9:45. The first pots of coffee will already be made and the treats on hand in the kitchen. They put out cups, napkins, sugar & cream, and ice water (and cut and plate treats, if necessary). They monitor refreshments and refill as necessary, do the first round of dishes, and have things in good order when they are done at 10:30.

“Second Service” hosts need to be in the kitchen by 11:15. They monitor refreshments and refill as necessary. When done serving, they wash the remaining dishes and communion cups, rinse out the coffee pots, wipe off the countertops, and clean all tables with soap and water. In the fall we gave people the opportunity to sign up for a date to serve. We have now assigned people a date to serve and produced a full schedule to that people can switch dates if necessary. The schedule is filled out for May and June and is always available at the St. Barnabas website:

• www.stbarnabaslutheran.org • on the right sidebar, click “Sunday Service

Opportunities”, then click “Coffee Hosts”

Julie Hoyme sends a reminder email the week prior to when one serves. If you are unable to serve that week, it would be appreciated if you first tried to switch with someone for another Sunday. The first time through the schedule, we have tried to pair up folks who have served before (which is pretty much everyone who has had a child in Navigator Confirmation) with those for whom this is a new ministry.

If this ministry is something you would enjoy doing more frequently (like 3-4 times per year) you may certainly do so. We may need you especially during the summer. If you have questions about this ministry, feel this is something you are unable to do, or would be willing to serve a second time, please contact Pastor Amber at 763-553-1239 or [email protected].

Family Resource Center at St. Barnabas

• The Morpheus band was snowed out on March 9, so their benefit concert for Helping Haiti Work has been rescheduled for Friday, May 3, at the West Medicine Lake Community Center, 1705 Forestview Lane. This concert has become an annual tradition and is always a ton of fun. Doors will open at 7:00 and the music will start at 7:30. Suggested donation is $20.

• Bobbi Sognesand got a little dehydrated at worship on Easter morning, causing her to feel faint, which prompted a call for an ambulance. Bobbi thanks everyone for their concern and wants all to know that she is back home and feeling fine.

• It looks like the Men’s Golf Retreat will take place on Friday and Saturday, June 21-22. New

participants are welcome. If you’d like to get on the email list, send an email to Pastor Wayne ([email protected].)

• No Rummage Sale: There does not seem to be any collective energy for a rummage sale this summer, so St. Barnabas will not have one this August.

• The Church Council has elected its officers for the coming year:

President: Lisa Turnquist

Vice-president: Lisa Jette

Treasurer: Ted Pestel

Secretary: Aaron Wenaas

Sign up on the Welcome Center or send an email to Pastor Amber if:

1) you would like to become part of this ministry,

2) if you can't come to the orientation but want to be included in schedules going forward.

We are also looking for people to serve as Assisting Ministers to lead parts of the liturgy and help serve communion. We will do this training individually. If interested, contact Pastor Amber. ([email protected])

Pastor Amber is hosting a series of worship leader orientations for those wanting to learn worship leader roles as well as for those who are already trained in these roles. Each session will last about 40 minutes, and will include reviewing and updating procedures for each worship leader task area. The roles of Greeter (stand near the entrance and greet people as they arrive) and Usher (hand out bulletins, receive the offering) can be filled by children and youth, either serving with their parents or with another adult. The role of Lector (read the scripture readings) can be filled by upper elementary and older youth who are good readers. The training sessions are set for:

ST. BARNABAS IDENTITY

STATEMENT

St. Barnabas Lutheran Church is a part of the Body

of Christ and a member congregation of the

Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

The source of our life together is the Word and Sacraments, celebrated in our worship.

We name ourselves after St. Barnabas, a New

Testament apostle. He was called “Barnabas”, meaning

“son of encouragement”, because he joyfully shared the “good news” of our Savior, Jesus Christ. He faithfully supported the work of the Church with his talents, prayers, and offerings.

MISSION STATEMENT

Sent by Jesus, we set our sails to be filled by God’s Spirit,

inspiring us to praise, grow and serve.

Return Service Requested

Barney’s Blarney A pastor had preached for over an hour. When he finally finished, he said to the congregation, “Now, in closing, turn to the person sitting next to you and tell each other your names.” One lady turned to the man next to her, extended her hand, and said brightly, “Hi! I’m Gladys Dunn.” The man shook her hand and replied, “I’m glad it’s done, too, lady.”

Minneapolis Area Synod Assembly The annual assembly of the Minneapolis Area Synod will meet May 2-3, at Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Ramsey. The Minneapolis Area Synod extends roughly from Belle Plaine to Cambridge south to north and from the Mississippi out to Buffalo east to west. Lay members and pastors from the 147 congregations of the synod will gather for worship, education, and fellowship. Beth Parks, Don Collier, Sue Megrund and Joseph Tullberg will join Pastor Amber and Pastor Wayne at the synod assembly on behalf of St. Barnabas.

Thanks to all who have returned their pledges for the

Good Bones Capital Appeal. We are still hoping to get responses from

about 40 households. Each one is important! Pledges can be placed in the offering at

worship or sent in my mail. Thanks!
