1 Really? Seriously? You have to be kidding me it's that time again? Yes, it's time for one big party at the 125th anniversary of the Orange County Fair. Hot dogs, cold beer, deep fried anything, rides, barnyard animals, demolition derby, and most important of all, the Fine Art Woodworking Show. And, you can be a part of all this fun just by signing up for the OCWA booth at the wood- working competition. You can be a Docent, man the information desk, demonstrate some of your won- drous skills, and if you sign up for three or more shifts you will receive a badge that will give you unfettered access to the Fair. Sounds like a good deal to me. Just go to the members section of the ocwoodworkers.org web site, click on the OC Fair icon, pick a shift, and click. That's it. Easy. We're looking forward to seeing you at the Fair. Show and Tell Well, I'm pretty sure that most of you have delivered your wonderful works of art to the Fair by now, so there is not too much left in the old shop to bring to show and tell, so maybe you can bring something that you've made in the past for a loved one, or a grandchild, or maybe something you're making for the Ol' Prez since he just had a birthday. In any case, we'd love to see something you've made that has demon- strated your love for someone other than yourself. Bring it, and we'll have a love fest. Toys and Pens We're past the halfway point in the year, and our toy making elves are busy making their stretch run for the big Christmas toy giveaway, and our Pen technicians are turning their little fingers to the bone making beautiful writing instruments for those who have served, or who are currently serving their country in the cause of freedom. If you would like to join these fine folks in these worthwhile programs you can contact Mr. Bill Rogers our head elf in the toy program, or for pens you can contact the Captain, Mr. John Marshall. They will gladly put you to work, and you'll never be the same. Take the time There are times when you are working in your shop when you just don't want to take that extra five minutes to set up a jig, or walk across the shop for a push stick, especially for just one cut. You'll hear yourself saying it's just one cut; I don't need to take that extra time for just one cut. When you hear yourself saying something like that to yourself you should immediately disregard it, and do just the opposite, because you know when you're sit- ting in the emergency room for four hours you'll be thinking that I should have listened to the Ol' Prez.James Santhon Volume 32 Issue 7 July 2015 I N T H I S I S S U E Presidents Message 1 WoodturnersShavings 2 Calendar of Events 2 Show and Tell 3 Toy Story 4 Freedom Pen Project 5 Lumber Rack & Scrap Bin 6 Meeting Dates 7 President s Message James Santhon

Another exciting and inspiring demonstration by Don Scott featuring fine-tuned wood turned kaleidoscope. It brought back memories of my younger days when first mesmerized by those spectacular imagines. How does that work? Now we know the secret is out. The challenge pieces inspired from this demo should be truly spectacular. I had no idea how wide spread and popular kaleidoscopes are. As an interesting exercise; Google kaleidoscope….

The Orange County Fair is quickly arriving upon us…still some openings left. According to Sarah Breucop, everyone gets a badge and should be ready for pick up at the July 2nd meeting.

The July’s demonstration is by Bob Gibbs. No explanation as to what the topic, take a guess. Be ready for a fast-paced exciting event. Mr. Enthusi-asm will be in top form with new styles and configurations.

Thanks to everyone for their participation in the show & tell and monthly challenge. The talent displayed by everyone is greatly appreciated and an inspiration to the whole group. What a stimulating and inspiring event. Keep it up!

Until Later, Be Safe and Keep Your Tools Sharp!

The June Toy Workshop was attended by 25 people and two workshop dogs, I'm re-ferring to the four legged kind. From the efforts on Sat., we were able to put 160 items into the warehouse. Ed Smet had his crew assembling keepsake boxes and we had three tables where we had the crew of sanders going strong on small parts for many different toys. Jeff Bennett, a stair maker, and one of our members gave me a load of English White Oak and it is beautiful wood. White oak makes a great wood for toys and it requires very little sanding and best of all a coat of sealer and a finish coat of lacquer and you are done. It machines like plastic and I haven't found a knot in any piece yet. Len Musgrave took a load to make sides for cradles and several others took some. I still have a lot

and it is either 3/4 or close to 1 inch thick. Call me to get some for your toys.

The July Workshop will be on July 11th at Bill Rogers’ house from 9am to noon.

Thank you to all of turners that have been supporting our pen program. So far this year we have distributed over 1200 pens. Those that have returned over 100 pens are Gary Phipps 120, Gary Taylor 160, Seldon Warner 189, and Eric Thorson 405. We appreciate their ef-fort.

Recently Bill Rogers accepted a donation from the Fellowship Club of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Orange, Ca. for our pen program of $1,000.00! We appreciate their generous donation. At the last meeting, it was agreed that the funds should be divided between Bill’s Toy Program and the Pen Pro-gram to offset the cost of supplies for both programs. We also thank all of you that have donated to the Helmet for the pen program.

Les Rogers distributed 110 pens to the USS Pasadena Submarine Program. We would like to thank all of you veterans that turned pens for this cause. We would like to remind those that checked out pens and have not returned them, to please do so.

On Saturday, June 20, the Rockler store in Orange had an open house that invited various Wood Clubs in the area to display their wares. OCWA was invited. Bill Rogers had his toys on display and we had our pens on display. Ken Cowell also had his marquetry display there. It was a fine day and we would like to thank Michael and Guy for the invite and all their work for the set up.

REMINDER TO SOME OF OUR NEW PEN TURNERS, AND SOME OLDER ONES!

1. When you finish a pen, make sure it writes and works properly.

2. Package the pen in its individual plastic bag, along with the pen insert (available on the website). PLEASE FILL IN YOUR NAME ON THE LINE.

3. Package 5 or 10 pens in the original plastic bag and return them.

4. Should you mess up a pen, return it as well and we will try to salvage some of the parts.

5. Remember no one likes a pen that doesn’t work or the finish is not acceptable, so take time to insure your product is acceptable. If you turn in pens without a name included, you will not get credit for them and it messes up our count.

Should any of you that want to turn pens at the fair have any questions, feel free to call me.

Have a great 4th of July, and keep turning.

Do you have any woodworking-related tips, tricks, news, or comments? Email them to the editor ([email protected]) or write them down and hand them to David at a club meeting. In an Asso-ciation of woodworkers, every member, even a nov-ice, can contribute something to improve every-one’s knowledge and skill in the craft, be it a new trick or technology, a “learning experience,” or a reminder of an old-school technique.

The Duesenberg's Are Back

If you have never been to the Lyon Air Museum at Orange County Airport now would be a good time to visit. From July 1st to August 4th, they are having 10 of General Lyon's personal Duesenberg's on exhibit. These Duesenbergs have been restored to perfect condition and it is a sight to see if you love the finer things in life. Each Duesenberg on display is valued at more than a million dollars and one of them I've heard General Lyon was offered 10 mil-lion dollars and he never called them back. In addi-tion, you can see the many WW2 aircraft on display including a B17, B26, C46, AT6, and my favorite, a Bird Dog. The museum is open every day from 10 to 4 and the cost is 12 dollars for adults and 9 for seniors and 6 for kids over 6. Lyon Air Museum is at 1930 Ike James Rd in Santa Ana. Website is lyonairmuseum.org

Now That’s A Big Kaleidoscope

Some eccentric Englishmen build full-size Trebu-chets in their back yards and use them to fling flam-ing cars and pianos 1/4 mile across a field. This guy apparently lacks the pyromaniac gene, so he simply built a kaleidoscope. A really, really BIG ka-leidoscope. See how environmental sound artist Philip Blackburn did it and watch the final result in action at 3M’s US Newsroom, and on the scope’s Facebook Page.
