CAPA/CPAN Certification

Our Ways and Means Committee is busy getting ready for the Silent Auction

to be held at the State Conference in January. You can help by donating

something yourself or securing a donation from a friend or business that you

frequent. How about your favorite restaurant or shop? Maybe you know

someone starting up a business – an auction is an excellent way to advertise.

A donation letter is available (click on link here) if needed. We will have

many great items for you to bid on with all proceeds to benefit the LAPAN

organization. Please call or email if you can help or have any questions.

Message from ASPAN Representative Jenny Kilgore: Greetings LAPAN

Thanks for the opportunity to speak to this awesome group of perianesthesia nurses and to be a part of LAPAN! I have given a

great deal of thought on how to inspire this beautiful, brave group! I want to talk about “belonging”.

America is in the midst of a spiritual crisis. I think it would be difficult to argue that we are not facing heated struggles that

quite frankly are uncomfortable. Everyone has opinions, beliefs, ideas, passions and mix that with technology and media the

flame ignites big time! According to research studies by social scientist Brene Brown from University of Houston - We are

disconnected.

Her research revealed that people today feel they are losing that sense of shared humanity. The world feels heartbroken.

We’ve sorted ourselves into factions based on our politics and ideas. We’ve turned away.. from God and from one another.

Many would attest that we are more isolated. We are quick to press toward blame and rage. Many are lonely and untethered

and scared. With emotions running at an all time high – many discussions on issues – frankly are dominated by an Us vs Them

mentality. Media is all forms fuels it.

The very things that have brought us together are breaking - football games, concerts, corporate worship – honoring the

American flag - mass shootings in Las Vegas, churches, schools – removing historical figures – The very things we treasure and

give joy and hope are under attack. Why? Where is this coming from?

Politically, spiritually, economically, socially, culturally, linguistically – even our words there is division. We feel anxious about

saying the wrong thing, expressing the wrong opinion, and fear of being excluded. Really, what do we have to keep us, to

bond us, to unify us? As a nation, as components, units, families. What happens if we are divided? We fall. Its time to

recognize and make It our mission to come together. How can our society move past shame and hate toward empathy and

connection?

Let’s face it everyone wants to be a part of something, but it has got to be real, not fake! Not conditional! As Americans, as

ASPAN, – I believe we must cultivate belonging! Recognizing that we are all inextricably connected to each other through

nursing, our calling - through love and compassion!

Brene Brown gives us four keys to true belonging.

1. Make eye contact with people you disagree with – get to know them. She says, “people are hard to hate up

close” - Much stealthier and easy online, behind a computer screen. Don’t just agree to disagree…go deeper.

Share the reasons why the issue or topic is so important to you. When you want to run away or launch an attack,

say “Tell me more”. Keep your eye on the future for outcomes you both hope for

2. Share collective joy and pain – there is a sense of true belonging spending time sharing emotional experiences

with large, diverse groups (church, sporting events, concerts, services, seminars, conferences) Seek collective joy,

show up for experiences of collective pain – for real, in person – not online, it more difficulty to deny our human

connection.

Sociologists observed that religious ceremonies, church create “collective effervescence” a sense of share

emotion, connection, and sacredness. When we feel more similar to others, we feel more concern for them, we

listen better, and we stick it out longer.

3. Speak up (NICELY) when you disagree. People who feel a sense of belonging don’t stay silent in these situations,

but they do not attack either. They ask for clarification or evidence, they listen, they’re respectful.

4. Embrace the paradox – Strong back, soft front. Which means on one hand they have principles and boundaries;

they will speak up and show you their authentic self, even when it’s uncomfortable. But they are also

compassionate and vulnerable; they don’t lash out or put up a wall in front of their emotions. True belonging

involves the courage to stand alone.

In closing, we should never allow differences – be it cultural, social, political to be elevated above the message, above our

collective purpose. These things can weasel their way quite stealthily into the group and divide. I encourage you to actively

seek out ways to unify, communicate and love!

Belonging,

Jenny
