Message from the President: Lynn McCleary

FALL 2014

In this newsletter, I‟d like to encourage CGNA members to take advantage of opportunities to share their expertise and make a difference in older adults‟ health.

Opportunities for member involvement – sharing the Benefits & Passion for Gerontological Nursing

Gerontological nurses are women and men from a wide range of backgrounds who choose to work with older adults. We work in rural and urban settings, in community and health care facilities as well as in education and research. Being a member of local, provincial and national organizations that support gerontological care brings both benefits and the opportunity to share – to have a voice in influencing at the local, provincial and national levels, issues related to care of older adults. No matter what the focus of our individual clinical practices are – care in the community, incontinence care, skin care, mobility, safety for older adults, we need nurses speaking up, sharing with one another, with families, the public and politicians. In addition, we play key roles in introducing the breadth and versatility of gerontological nursing to those who are new to the areas of geriatrics and nursing. How we do this is important. Within our local, provincial and national bodies of gerontological nurses we have a range of opportunities to share our knowledge and skills and to learn new ones that contribute to our roles as nurses. This newsletter issue includes some of the national sub-committees that we would like representation from the various spheres of gerontological nursing and from across Canada.

CGNA Standards The CGNA Gerontological Nursing Competencies and Standards of Practice were last revised and published in 2010. As an organization for which nurses can write the Canadian Gerontological Nursing Certification exam, we review and update the standards every 5 years. This allows us to respond to evolving change as a partner in the health care system. This process calls for a working group with representation from across Canada to review and update the standards and is followed by an external review prior to publishing them in 2015. We are looking for nurses who have knowledge and expertise in the areas of the broad standard areas: Physiological health, optimizing functional health, responsive care, relationship care, health systems, safety and security. Nominations This is a call for nominations for CGNA executive members whose terms will end at the next 2015 Annual General Meeting in May in PEI. The process will be posted on the Website later in November and will include the position descriptions and criteria for nominations for each position. The positions to be filled include: President-Elect and Secretary.

Webinar Subcommittee

The Webinar Subcommittee meets two to four times a year to brainstorm about topics and speakers for the Webinar Series, which will start later this fall. We are seeking new members for the subcommittee and would love to have representation from across our great nation. Communications subcommittees:

The use of communications within our national organization has increased over the past 5-6 years and provides a greater opportunity for us to have a voice with one another and within our roles of advocacy. The following sections include some of the expectations of the committees in hopes that you might try one of these. We encourage the committees to have 2-3 year revolving terms as these are volunteer positions. We hope to have a couple of sessions on these different roles at the CGNA national meeting in May, 2015 in PEI. These could also be useful for those of you interested or currently in these roles at your local or provincial levels.

CGNA Newsletter

This newsletter is published four times a year. By having 3-5 members representing different regions of Canada we are able to provide an across Canada perspective. The newsletter tries to include both provincial and national reports of what has happened or is coming up. The submissions are brief, a few lines to a couple of paragraphs for the section „Meet our Member‟. We like to highlight up-coming conferences, relevant political items. The time commitment for this is usually 3-4 hours, four times a year.

CGNA Facebook

As with the newsletter we are looking to have 3-4 committee members; it helps to have Facebook experience even though organizational Facebook pages work somewhat differently than personal ones. Having 3-4 members from across Canada helps us to have 3-4 administrators who are able to post and manage our pages.

CGNA Website

This is a new sub-committee that CGNA plans to have, in order to keep our national website current, fresh and easy for members and those interested in gerontological nursing issues to navigate.

Perspectives – Journal for CGNA

Are you interested in becoming a reviewer for Perspectives? It means agreeing to review manuscripts submitted to Perspectives in a timely fashion (two week turnaround) and making recommendations to the editor-in-chief. Reviewers can expect to receive about 4-6 manuscripts per year and there is a “reviewer‟s

template” that can be used to organize your comments. This is a valuable service to CGNA and a professional activity that can be added to your curriculum vitae (CV). If you have an advanced degree (master‟s level) and are interested in volunteering to be a reviewer or would like more information, please

contact Lorna Guse. Interested reviewers will be asked to submit their contact information, areas of expertise and interest, and a copy of their CV. [email protected]

Certification – one way in which CGNA members contribute and benefit is through our participation in writing the certification exam, recertifying and helping colleagues to prepare to write. Our Meet our Member, Trish Walsh has taken part in these aspects of certification as well as volunteering to help move forward the health care of older adults.

Meet Your Member

In each issue of the CGNA Newsletter we like to share the knowledge and experiences of nurses working in gerontology. This issue highlights the experience of Trish Walsh, RN, BNS, who graduated from the Aberdeen School of Nursing in 1977, completed her nursing degree by distance education from St. F.X.U in 1996, and has been involved with Geriatric Nursing since 2002. Trish completed a certificate in Gerontological Nursing in 2003 and Gerontological Nursing Certification through the Canadian Nursing Association in 2006; she completed the recertification process in 2012. Her role for the past 2 years is Resident Care Manager at Taigh Na Mara a Long Term Care Facility in the

Cape Breton District Health Authority. Prior to this, she was the Elder Friendly Coordinator where she provided education to staff around the unique needs of older adults using the NICHE program (Nurses Improving Care for Health Systems Elders). She worked as a Geriatric Nurse Clinician in Geriatric Services from 2002- 2006. She is a member the Long Term Care Quality Improvement team and the Nova Scotia Falls Prevention committee. She is the Cape Breton Representative on the Nova Scotia Gerontological Nurses Association. Trish was instrumental in bringing Teepa Snow, (shown here in a photo with Trish) Dementia Care Specialist, to Cape Breton to provide education for staff and to provided public sessions on Dementia Care. Teepa Snow is coming back to Cape Breton in November to complete a 4 part training program with front line staff. As nurses we also have „other lives‟ which enrich what we have to offer: Trish is

also a runner and has just completed her 6th half marathon with a personal best! What follows is her report in representing CGNA at a national health care symposium – thank you Trish.

On Thursday, February 27, 2014 I (Trisha Walsh) along with Josette Roussel, Senior Nurse Advisor from the Canadian Nurses Association attended the National Health Action Plan Symposium, Towards a National Oral Health Action Plan held at the Fairmount Chateau Laurier in Ottawa. The symposium was hosted by the Canadian Dental Association (CDA) and attended by key stakeholders including oral health care providers, researchers, special interest groups, government, regulators and related health care professionals such as physicians, pharmacists, social workers, nurses, etc. The CDA was acting on the results of the Canadian Health Measures Survey conducted between 2007 and 2009 which reported that 34% of Canadians have clinical dental needs. The symposium started with a presentation by Dr. Peter Cooney, Chief Dental Officer from the Public Health Agency of Canada. Dr. Cooney highlighted examples of collaborative approaches to promote oral health in vulnerable groups. Dr. Louise Desjardins Senior Consultant continued with the presentation of a discussion paper “Towards a National Oral Health Action Plan” commissioned by the CDA as a framework to move forward. In this document, vulnerable population groups are identified as “groups of people who, for a variety of

reasons, are at risk of or already experience less than optimal oral health, and face barriers of different sorts to accessing quality oral health care.” The vulnerable groups identified by Dr. Desjardins are

seniors, people living in low income situations, aboriginal peoples, and people living with disabilities. Mr. Bill Tholl provided an overview of an internal and external stakeholder consultation to a pre-symposium survey to diagnose the scale and scope of oral health challenges. The symposium continued with a facilitated discussion on oral health in Canada and a review of the vulnerable population groups identified. There were 3 areas identified as potential priorities for oral health collaboration: fluoridation which provides the most impact on the greatest number; seniors especially those in long term care facilities and children from 0-6 with a focus on prenatal interventions. The final report of the symposium will be shared with participants with recommendations and next steps.

Check the CNA website at http://www.cna-aiic.ca/en or at http://nurseone.ca/en/certification for details on becoming certified or recertified in gerontology. Our gerontology specialty continues to have the largest number of certified nurses!

Nominations Open for Honorary Life Member Award

This award is presented in recognition of a member's outstanding contribution to the field of gerontology and the gerontological nursing profession or CGNA. Please consider nominating an outstanding colleague for this award.

To be eligible, the nominee must be a long-standing member of CGNA and have made a significant contribution to gerontological nursing and/or CGNA by one or more of the following:

- Creating or assisting in the organizing and implementing of new or improved gerontological nursing care delivery or gerontological education programs.

- Demonstrating clinical expertise resulting in an improvement in gerontological nursing care delivery

- Initiating or contributing to activities which have resulted in increased status and public recognitio n for gerontological nursing practice as a whole, through administrative ability; leadership and service within the association; having earned the respect, admiration and support of other nurse leaders and/or

- The nominee must have made a scholarly contribution to gerontological nursing practice and growth in the areas of published material; research and teaching or public statements on questions relating to gerontological nursing.

A letter documenting evidence of meeting these criteria must be submitted to Lynn McCleary ([email protected]) by February 1, 2015. The nomination must be supported by 6 nurses who are active members in CGNA at the time of the nomination. Each supporting members will write a letter documenting their view of evidence of the candidate's contributions and how these contributions have positively influenced gerontological nursing.

Deadline for Submission of Abstracts: Extended to October 30, 2014

The Canadian Gerontological Nursing Association is pleased to announce its 18th Biennial Conference at the Rodd Charlottetown, Charlottetown, PEI. You are invited to submit an abstract for consideration as an oral, poster, or roundtable presentation addressing this theme. Here are some suggestions for topic focus:

Provincial Reports

Alberta – Alberta Gerontological Nurses Association For this membership year AGNA is exploring new and creative „out of the box‟

means to connect our smaller in number member groups with larger communities of practice. Two members have accepted appointment to the provincial Advocacy Committee. The committee‟s focus will include expanding on themes identified from the annual conference „Conversations from practice‟

held in April. AGNA members will be attending conferences hosted by both licensing bodies for RNs (CARNA) and LPNs (CLPNA) this fall that are addressing issues significant to older adults.

British Columbia - Gerontological Nurses Association of British Columbia :www.gnabc.com

We have 203 members provincially as of Oct. 19/14. Ongoing challenge for the chapters is membership recruitment and retention.

Our 10 chapters continue to each have their own successes and each have had great education topics and presenters at their chapter meetings.

The main initiatives we focused on at the provincial level over the summer and early fall has been:

The updating of all our existing forms and documents that support the provincial executive and chapters with the creation of some new documents. Feedback has been received and the forms and documents will be finalized over the next few weeks.

The creation of a membership registration process algorithm to reflect the process of our registrar, treasurer and chapter roles with respect to registration and management of the membership lists, as GNABC decided at April 2014 AGM to manage its own business-related affairs.

Further enhancements to our website with additional information/sections, including keeping the chapter information about upcoming meetings current.

The update of the history section on our website, for which we gratefully acknowledge and thank the following contributors (Nan Martin, Judy Delaney, and Jessie Mantle) for kindly collaborating, clarifying and confirming the history/evolution of GNABC.

We are looking forward to the GNABC 2015 conference, which will be held on April 23, 24 & 25, 2015 at the Coast Capri Hotel located in beautiful Kelowna, B.C. The conference theme is “We’re in this

together”-Advocacy-“What is your Role?” Deadline for “Call for Abstracts” has been extended to

Nov. 15, 2014 (see website for details: www.gnabc.com ).

Manitoba – Manitoba Gerontological Nurses‟ Association AGM & education date:

1. We had our general meeting on 2014 September 17 and had a great education presentation on Montessori Method for Dementia Care by Karen Bauer and Leslie Orlikow from Winnipeg Rivera Health Services.

2. Our next General Meeting will be 2014 December 10 1700-1900 at the CRNM building. Speaker for our education presentation will be Christine Johnson on the BC “48/6” Model of Care for

hospitalized seniors. 3. Since we no longer have our MGNA website active, if needed, you can use my email for contact:

New Brunswick – New Brunswick Gerontological Nursing Association:

The NBGNA met on September 19th with 20 in attendance. We are looking into making our provincial logo bilingual and in color, to reflect the New Brunswick flag colors. Our next meeting is December 5, 2014 at Camden Park Terrace, Moncton, NB.

Newfoundland – Newfoundland & Labrador Gerontological Nurses Association

NLGNA members are regrouping and re-organizing – we hope to have more information soon!

Nova Scotia – Nova Scotia Gerontological Nurses Association – www.nsgna.com

As Fall is clearly upon us, the NSGNA Executive are taking stock and cleaning up in our own backyard. We had our meeting face-to-face (versus teleconference) on Saturday, October 25th, 2014 to tackle issues such as updating our NSGNA By-Laws and Operations Manual to reflect those of CGNA with regards to the Canada Not- for Profit Corporations Act, as well as changes we will be making to update criteria for our Scholarships/Bursaries and Honourary Lifetime Memberships. This full day also saw us determine processes necessary to ensure that we follow Canada‟s

Anti-Spam Legislation, while also determining how we can raise much - needed funds from advertising fees. Planning will also begin over the coming months for our 31st NSGNA Annual General Meeting and Education Sessions in the Spring of 2015.

Ontario – Gerontological Nursing Association Ontario – www.gnaontario.org

Ontario nurses are prepared for their next provincial conference which will be November 6th & 7th - in Sarnia: “Partnering for Healthy Aging.” You are encouraged to join them! for the past year GNAO has worked on revisions for their by-laws and these will be voted on at the AGM to bring GNAO into alignment with the new federal Not-for-Profit Act.

Prince Edward Island – Prince Edward Island Gerontological Nurses Association

Fall is truly underway now and we are gearing up for our PEIGNA general meeting Wednesday, Oct. 22. We are welcoming guest speaker- Treena MacLeod; Meetings and Conventions PEI who will share ideas for the CGNA Biennial Conference, May 27-30, 2015.
