HAPPY NEW YEAR

- HELEN KELLER

In Memory of Haynes Henton TownsendOur International Lions Family lost a great Lion on December 17,2019. 1st International Vice President Judge Haynes Townsendpassed away. A number of Kansas Lions had the opportunity to be

inspired by 1st IVP Townsend, December 4th, in Wichita. He spoke at the 100th Anniversarycelebration of the Wichita Downtown Lions. He talked about the power of Kindness in our service asLions. Let us honor the memory of the dedicated LION and serve with KINDNESS.

1VDG Rick DodsonKINDNESS MATTERS

I hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable holiday season.

We lost a great Lions leader recently when International First Vice President HaynesTownsend passed away. We were privileged to hear him speak at the 100th birthdaycelebration of the Downtown Wichita Lions Club in early December. His messagewas a preview of what was to be his theme as President next year. Though his themewould not have been officially announced until the upcoming International

Convention, he hinted that it would be a variation on “kindness matters.”

While kindness is a year-round trademark of Lions, our generosity and compassion are never more evident thanduring this time of the year as we celebrate the Christmas and New Year holidays. I feel safe in saying that everyLions club provides increased levels of community service during this period. We collect and donate toys, food, and clothing to the less fortunate in our communities. We are highly visible in these efforts and I hope you use thisas an opportunity to celebrate your good deeds.

“Kindness is a language that blind people see and deaf people hear.” This sentence paraphrases a sentimentattributed to Mark Twain and should be an inspiration to us all. So, thank you for your kind, generous, compassionate support for your communities.

We Serve.

Where there’s a NEED There’s a LION

I hope you had a great Holiday season with your families and loved ones. One of the highlightsof 2019, in my opinion, was the 100th Anniversary of Wichita Downtown Lions Club (1919-2019) on December 4th. This was my first time celebrating a club’s 100 year of service. Ilearned that this was the first time for our keynote speaker, 1st Vice President Haynes H.Townsend, and other Lions attended such an event as well. What a remarkable milestone forKansas Lions! Ronald K. Badger led us on a wonderful “Trip down - Memory Lane” regardingWichita Downtown Lions Club’s history. Collectively, the actions and activities we practice asLions today are often deeply rooted in the events of the past. In order to lead effectively in thepresent and prepare for the future, we must first understand the significance of our past.Furthermore, not only was it fascinating to learn and understand our Kansas Lions history, but it

is fundamental to look some critical pieces of Lions Club International (LCI) milestone that shaped our organization. Fromtime to time, during my club visits around the district, some Lions have talked about the LCI timeline of events and I see itas a great opportunity to share our organization’s past and fundaments.

Here are a few LCI important timeline of events: 1917 - The Association of Lions Clubs is founded by Melvin Jones; 1920 -The Association of Lions Clubs becomes an international association with the chartering of a club in Canada; 1925 - HelenKeller petitions Lions to be “knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness;” 1954 - The association’s motto, “Weserve”, is established; 1957 - Lions launch youth programs, including the very successful Leo Clubs; 1968 - LCIF isestablished; 1973 - The association welcomes its 1 millionth member; 1987 – Women are included as members in theassociation; 1988 – The first International Peace Poster takes place (note: the contest began in 1988, with the first winnerbeing announced in 1989); 1999 - LCIF partners with Carter Center, led by former U.S. President and Lions Jimmy Carter,to combat blindness in Africa and Latin America; 2010 - The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation contributes US$5 million tothe One Shot: One Life campaign and Lions raise more than US$10 million to support measles efforts over the next twoyears; 2014 - Lions launch the Centennial Service Challenge, a global initiative to serve 100 million people around theworld; 2017 - Lions celebrate their 100th anniversary and first century of service!

The LCI emblem represents the lion’s face both past and future - proud of the past and confident of the future. Accordingly,we must look toward the future. Let’s focus on how we’re fulfilling the most important component of our association in thepresent – through SERVICE. In the meantime, please encourage all Lions to use the current LCI Logo, not the outdated onethat was replaced more than ten years ago. According to LCI, a few of the easiest ways to recognize the correct brandingrequirements are: a) if the logo has a red tongue, it is the wrong logo; b) if the logo is not smooth across the top, it is thewrong logo; and c) if the I and L in the world international are illegible, it is the wrong logo.

“Let our New Years resolution be this: we will be there for one another as fellow members of humanity, inthe finest sense of the word.” – Goran Persson
