HAWK WEEKLY Volume 3, Issue 13 October 26, 2015
A Note from the Superintendent DUTIES OF AN NVMI PARENT
This week’s duty is Duty #6:
6. Ensure your child attends school every day on time and only misses class for very
serious reasons.
Daily school attendance is critical for a child’s success. NVMI has a policy that a student who misses 15 or more days
in a semester may be denied credit for all courses that semester. That means a child will not move onto the next grade
level, fails all classes for that semester, and has to repeat the courses and grade.
Please do everything you can to make sure your child is on time to school every single school day.
Sometimes in life, we experience mixed blessings. Captain Steve Diab, our beloved Commandant of Cadets and Delta Company TAC Officer, has wanted to become an LA Police Officer since he was in second grade. We are very proud to announce that CPT Diab was selected to attend the Los Angeles Police Academy beginning next Monday, November 2. That is a huge accomplishment and something for which we are very proud of Captain. Sadly, that means he will be leaving us at the end of this week. We are very thankful for his faithful service, and we wish him the very best in the next phase of his amazing life.
I am pleased to welcome Captain (U.S. Army) Amanda Mendoza, who has California Cadet Corps experience and holds both a Bachelor’s Degree and California Designate Subjects Special Subjects Basic Military Drill teaching credential. She will take over as our new Commandant and Delta Company TAC officer.
This Thursday morning at 8AM in the small gym, we are hoping parents and students
will come to say farewell to Captain Diab with a small social gathering. Parents are welcome to bring refreshments for the gathering. Also Thursday at the 3:25 p.m. formation, we will have a brief change of command ceremony. Please join us in thanking Captain Diab for his faithful service and welcoming Captain Mendoza.

DONATIONS: NVMI needs your help to offset a budget deficit. Specifically, we need donations of both CASH and various items. Here are some things to consider.
1. NVMI provides more than $250 of free uniform items to each child each year. You would normally
have to pay for school clothes for your child, so if you are able to do so, please give us all or a
portion of that $250 in a donation to help our budget.
2. NVMI provides an amazing and very robust counseling staff ratio most schools do not provide.
Please consider donating cash to help pay for our counselors!
3. EVERY NVMI child participates in athletics in various forms, including intramurals and
interscholastic. NVMI pays more than $77,000 a year for our athletic program. Please consider
donating to help with those costs.
4. WE PAY ABOUT $200 a week in Xerox paper alone! We need donations of cases of white 8.5X11
inch copy paper. Literally, more than 5000 reams or 25,000,000 sheets of paper are used by NVMI
in a year. If you are at Staples or Office Depot or Walmart or Target and can pick up copy paper,
please do so and bring it to the main office right away.
Newsletter 3
5. We also need donations of other office supplies:
6. IF YOUR CHILD TAKES THE BUS: NVMI is paying over $250,000 a year for free bus transportation. If you are able to donate to help cover those costs, please send some cash to help with those expenses. All donations are tax deductible and we will give you a tax donation letter. Bring items (with receipts so we know how much to give you credit for) or cash to the main office in an envelope with your name, child’s name, student ID#, grade, and company. We will give you a tax donation receipt within two business days of turning in the items or cash.
PROBATIONARY ELIGIBILITY
NVMI wants students to do well academically and be good leaders, citizens, and athletes. To that end, we have an
eligibility requirement to participate in extracurricular activities like sports, band, drill teams, cheer, and weekend
cadet events, etc. The basic requirements are to have passing grades in all classes, have NO UNEXCUSED
ABSENCES, and no more than 10 permanent demerits in a quarter.
We do this because we want students to be successful and we want them to be good representatives of the school when
they go out in public.
Occasionally, a student misses the mark but really wants to participate in one or more of these activities. We have a
system called PROBATIONARY ELIGILIBILTY which allows a student to have one quarter of probationary
eligibility during their entire middle school career and one during their entire high school career at NVMI. If you and
your child would like to request probationary eligibility, there is a form they can obtain from Coach Sarenana. It must
be signed by the child and parent and submitted to the Superintendent for approval. Remember that you can only have
one quarter of probationary eligibility for all three years of middle school and only one quarter of probationary
eligibility for all four years of high school, so we do not recommend “using up” that quarter early on in a child’s
middle school or high school career at NVMI. IF you have questions about this, please contact me at
[email protected] or at 323-217-4481.

SCIENCE LABS If your child is enrolled in high school science and did not pass their
lab safety test, they cannot participate in lab experiences. Please
check with your child to see if they passed and if they did not, please
encourage them to study. The test is very straightforward, and
students were allowed to use notes and resources, so there is NO
EXCUSE for them not to pass.
RED RIBBON WEEK
Later in this bulletin is a copy of a letter sent home last
week about Red Ribbon Week. Please read it and plan to
come to the parenting workshop this Thursday. It will be
a great learning experience you will NOT WANT TO
MISS. (See page 13)

NVMI
NO RTH VALLE Y M ILITAR Y INS T ITU TE
Dear NVMI Parents, Monday, October 26, 2015, kicks off our annual Red Ribbon Week and is an ideal way for people
and communities to unite and take a visible stand against drugs. NVMI is showing our personal
commitment to a drug-free campus through the symbol of the Red Ribbon during the week of October
26th – 29th. This year’s theme is: Respect Yourself, Be Drug-Free!
The Red Ribbon campaign was started when drug traffickers in Mexico City murdered DEA agent
Kiki Camarena in 1985. This began the continuing tradition of displaying Red Ribbons as a symbol of
intolerance towards the use of drugs. NVMI has partnered with the Red Ribbon Campaign© to pursue
the mission of presenting a unified and visible commitment towards the creation of a Drug-Free
America.
NVMI will host various events in celebration of Red Ribbon Week beginning with our kick-off
assembly on Monday, October 26th at 8AM in the Big Gym. Henry Lozano, Kiki Camarena’s former
partner and Red Ribbon Week co-founder, will be our special guest speaker. Mr. Lozano will address the
dangers of drugs and motivate our cadets and pledges to respect themselves and be drug-free. Families
are welcome to attend.
NVMI will also be offering a special Parent Academy Workshop on the dangers of drugs and drug
prevention run by the San Fernando Valley Partnership, Inc. on Thursday, October 29, 2015 from 5:30-
7:00PM.
For more information about NVMI’s Red Ribbon Week or how you can be a helpful force in the
fight against drugs on our campus, please contact Ms. Tejada in the main office. Thank you!
