EXERCISE MAY CUT CANCER RISK Middle-aged men, in particular, take note: Exercising two or more times per week may reduce your risk ofdeveloping many different types of cancer, according to Britishresearchers. ''Physical activity in middle-aged men is associated withreduced risk of total cancers, prostate cancer, upper digestiveand stomach cancer,'' report Dr. S. G. Wannamethee andcolleagues at the University College Medical School in London. Wannamethee's team followed 7,588 men aged 40 to 59 fornearly 19 years. The investigators collected informationregarding exercise habits as well as cancer diagnosis andoverall health. Over the follow-up period, 969 men werediagnosed with some type of cancer, the report indicates. After taking into consideration many other risk factors, including smoking habits, weight, alcohol consumption andage, the researchers found that the risk of total cancers wassignificantly reduced only in men reporting moderately vigorousor vigorous activity; no benefit (was) seen at lesser levels.'' Men who reported participating in vigorous activities includingrunning, golf, swimming, tennis, sailing, and digging more thanonce per month were less likely to develop cancer than menwho did not take part in such activities or did so infrequently. The men who exercised vigorously two or more times per weekhad a 24% reduction in risk of any type of cancer and a 62%reduction in cancer of the upper digestive tract, according tothe report in a recent issue of the British Journal of Cancer. However, these men also had a 79% increased risk of bladdercancer. ``We consider that there is now sufficient evidence to justify theaddition of cancer to the list of major chronic disorders likely tohave their development postponed or prevented by regularphysical activity in leisure time,'' the authors write. Although the exercisers in the study were found to have ahigher risk of bladder cancer, ``it would seem that the overallbenefits of regular moderate physical activity on total cancersand on health in general greatly outweigh the possible adverserisks of vigorous activity on (bladder) cancer,'' Wannametheeand colleagues conclude.

“MEN IN TIGHTS” What do you get when you take eight burly Shipbuilders from Newcastle and coax them into learning and performing ballet?

    An interesting Television programme.

So the task of turning ship builders into ballet dancers was lead by Daniel Jones - Soloist with English National Ballet. The TV crew descended on Swan Hunter - Shipbuilders in Newcastle and the selection process began. Dominic Hickie - Sports Therapist, was commissioned to look after the physical wellbeing of the chosen dancers. Dominic is an Aikido black belt with Kikusui Kai and has come from the Traditional background, but he is very keen to adopt the Tomiki system of studying Aikido. After hours of auditions with an initial group of 250, Dominic aided Daniel to shortlist ten. The group were asked to perform basic ballet movements and hold a stance called arabesque, a posture in ballet in which the body is bent forward from the hip onone leg with one arm extended forward and the other arm and legbackward. This demonstrates good balance. Poise, grace and style are not something usually required in a shipyard. They were also looking for signs of physical strength, coordination and enthusiasm. The project and challenge was to see how far they get and to see how the cope with performers, the training and the intensity. The pre conception was that it would be easy. Their age’s range from 38 to 45 and one participant, Billie "One Punch", drinks 10 pints of beer a night is persuaded to drink wine & soda. Dominic warms them up, and initially they worked out and trained in Newcastle. They have 4 weeks to train them. From the 10, 8 will be chosen to go to London and to complete further training with professional dancers. The training was difficult, particularly as they didn’t want to stop the drinking and some were not taking it seriously enough. Dominic’s skills were summoned to correct some of the injuries acquired during training. The eight returned to Newcastle where the rehearsed ballet was performed at the Shipyard and in front of all the work force and their families and friends. It was an interesting programme from ITV1 and well done to Dominic for his part in it.

Currently the group are working on Koryu Dai San.

The Community Channel is the UK’s only National television channel dedicated toinspiring people to do more with their lives. So it is quite fitting that TV presenter, JacquiJoseph should take time out to learn a little about Aikido from World Champion, DavidFielding. "Oh my gosh David", "Ooh, ooh what wasthat slapping of the thighs" were some of the more humorous moments of David’s attempts to show Jacqui, Kote Mawashi. But David’s real achievement was in becomingIndividual World Champion, last year and the first non-Japanese to do it! As joint Squad Manager with his partnerVanda Fairchild, they are makingpreparations for the next WorldChampionships, which will be held in Japanin 2005. For those interested in training withthe Squad, there will be opportunities both inthe North and the South. Blue belt and above is the minimum grade needed. But dedication and commitment is a more important quality. For more information contact Vanda orDavid on: 07957 403578 or 020-8857 3241 Email: [email protected]
