Texas Comptroller SusanCombs Awards $2.5

Million in Scholarship Funds to 54

Texas Community Colleges

(AUSTIN) — Across the state this

fall, 54 community colleges and

public technical colleges will receive

a total of $2.5 million from Texas

Comptroller Susan Combs to use for

student scholarships this school year.

The JET (Jobs and Education for

Texans) Career and Technical

Scholarship Fund provides tuition

grants to award scholarships to

students enrolled in approved

training programs for several high-

demand occupations. Recipient

schools offer training programs in

engineering technology, welding,

precision production, computer

support, mechanical and repair

technology, construction, health

professions and other degree plans

where a certificate or an associate

degree is a basic prerequisite.

“Community colleges are facing

tight budgets, so our grant awards

are an obvious boon to both the

schools and their students,” Combs

said. “Texas has a critical need for

trained workers in technical jobs that

pay above-average salaries. We’re

meeting this challenge and helping

create a positive, long-term career

outlook for thousands of Texans.”

Sixty percent of the scholarship

funds are allocated to students

enrolled in certificate programs,

while the remaining 40 percent

covers associate degree plans.

Steven F. Horton, dean of technical

education at San Jacinto College in

Pasadena, appreciates the continued

support from the state of Texas

toward making a difference in the

lives of students.

“I could not be more pleased with

the commitment to workforce

education that Texas Comptroller

Susan Combs has shown through her

support of the JET Scholarship

Program,” Horton said. “Due to the

financial assistance that the program

has provided, 148 students at San

Jacinto College have enrolled in 14

technical education programs,

majoring in 24 different degree and

certificate options.”

In October 2009, the JET Advisory

Board awarded the first round of

tuition grants from the scholarship

fund, also totaling $2.5 million, to 54

Texas community and technical

colleges. In turn, these schools

awarded scholarships to 2,028

students. By June 2010, the program

disbursed about $1.5 million of that

$2.5 million available for

scholarships. The recipients, 72

percent of whom were above

traditional college age, received an

average of $740 each to help build

new and better lives.

Dr. John Bethscheider, provost of

Alvin Community College, said the

scholarship funds clearly provide the

financial assistance some students

need to continue their college

education.

“The JET Scholarship award comes

at a very opportune time for our

technical students,” Bethscheider

said. “With the high unemployment

rate and difficulty in finding jobs,

the scholarship award will allow our

students to train for jobs that are in

demand.”

Combs’ program helps Texas better

serve students in obtaining the

education and skills needed to meet

future work force challenges and

promotes the continued prosperity of

our economically diverse state.

The JET Career and Technical

Scholarship Fund is part of the

Comptroller’s Every Chance Funds,

a $25 million initiative providing

grants and scholarships over the

biennium for career and technical

education. The program also

includes the $10 million Launchpad

Fund, which supports and expands

existing nonprofit programs with a

proven track record of good

performance, and the $10 million

Job Building Fund, which helps

finance equipment purchases for new

career and technical education

programs that support high-growth

industries. For more information

Buying a New Wireless Phone

Remember those days when you called up Ma Bell to have phone service installed in your house? Those days are

rapidly fading and it seems we use our phones everywhere except our house these days.

Deciding on a new wireless provider and cell phone can be easy, but not if wireless service providers have anything to

say about it. All wireless companies are competing for the right to send you a monthly bill. They offer a multitude of

calling plans, free phones, and other incentives to get your business. The good news is that you can find the perfect

plan for you, if you apply a Who, Where, What, and When strategy.

Who asks which wireless provider has the strongest signal in your area? It is the most important consideration for most

consumers. All wireless providers are not created equal in all areas. Talk to friends, family and co-workers to find out

which provider has the best reception in your area. Everyone’s bottom line is a strong cell phone signal.

To figure out Who you also need to figure out Where. Will you use your phone mostly at home, the office, or in your

car with a hands-free set? Will you be traveling overseas to Europe or Asia? Do you live in a large city surrounded by

tall buildings? Do you use your cell phone mostly indoors or outdoors in the open country air?

Where is important because there are two different wireless networks operating in the US. The Code Division Multiple

Access (CDMA) network is very strong in the US, particularly in rural areas. The Global System for Mobile

Communications (GSM ) network has more global coverage. Both of these networks are used by wireless service

providers. But they are used exclusively, so when a wireless provider offers the GSM network, it does not offer the

CDMA network.

You’ve chosen a wireless service provider. Now it’s time to choose a plan. What will you mostly use your phone for?

Will you be calling more than texting? How about checking emails or browsing the internet?

When you make calls is also important in choosing a plan. How many minutes a month will you use in peak times,

those daytime hours where minutes count against your monthly total? Off-peak minutes are in the evening and on

weekends, and normally do not count against your monthly minutes. Know when off-peak hours start and stop. Find

out if your plan carries over un-used minutes from one month to the next. Also ask about plans that offer free minutes

any time of day to friends you call frequently, or to friends that use the same wireless provider.

The final step is choosing a phone. All wireless service providers have many models. When you select a phone, focus

on comfort and ease of use. Does the phone fit in your hand when talking and typing? Access the menu screen. Does it

feel intuitive? Can you read the screen without straining your eyes?

There are many websites that offer impersonal advice on buying cell phones. It’s easier to figure out in advance how

you will use your new phone and then ask friends and co-workers about their experiences. Most phones come with a

contract and penalty for premature service cancellation. To avoid this penalty do your research and get the best phone

the first time around.

TRYOUTS

The Corpus Christi IceRays have trimmedtheir roster to 22 players, and are still activein adding to their club following theirinaugural training camp last weekend,General Manager Pat Dunn announced onThursday. Last Friday – Sunday in NorthTexas, the IceRays held their first everNAHL Training Camp, as the club preparesfor their first season in a new league. 22players made the cut, and will now join newadditions over the next month beforeconvening in Corpus Christi at the end ofAugust for a final camp. For moreinformation please call the IceRays at361.814.PUCK or visit them online atwww.goicerays.com.

After reviewing 80 players who attended thecamp, IceRays Head Coach Brent Hughes,Assistant Coach Justin Quenneville, and

Dunn have cut the roster down while theycontinue to finalize their team forSeptember’s start to the season. TheIceRays coaching staff was excited withwhat they saw in their first look.

“Our first camp was a true success,” saidQuenneville, who was primarilyresponsible for setting up the event. “Brent (Hughes) and I were extremelyimpressed with the level of talent. We areboth very excited for the start of ourtraining camp in Corpus Christi at the endof August.”

Among those who impressed at the campwere players who were acquired from theformer Alpena IceDiggers in conjunctionwith the IceRays taking over the franchise’srights. Forwards Brandon Marshall andSam Cheraso, and defensemen Jason Souvaand Kyle Hughes are all Alpena returnerswho performed well in camp to remain onthe roster. They join Ben Hughes, who wasrecently acquired via a trade withWenatchee. New faces to the franchiseinclude Beau Walker, Jake Diamond, andAlaskan-born brothers Phoenix andNavaronne Copley. Big, powerforward Josh Munford also caught theattention of the coaches and scoutspresent at the camp. With 22 talented players making it throughthe opening audition, the IceRays arepleased with their foundation. However,Hughes said that there is still much to do inthe last two months of the off-season. “We

saw from camp that we have a strongnucleus to work with,” said Hughes. “Butwe still have a few pieces missing. (Quenneville) and I are confident that wewill find the right players to fill those voidsbefore the beginning of the Corpus camp.”

Options for the IceRays to add to theirroster before the season starts can come viatrade, free-agency signing, or picking upunsigned players from other NorthAmerican major junior hockeyleagues. NAHL rules stipulate the club’sroster size be no larger than 25 by the startof the season on September 15th, and thenan additional cut down to 23 players byOctober 1st.

In the interim, the IceRays view their firstNAHL camp as a big success. “We all werevery impressed with the size, skill level, andintensity of the players at the camp,” saidDunn. “We can’t wait to get them and someother hungry players down to South Texas, and let the best players form an IceRaysteam that will take this league by storm.”

IceRays hockey returns for a brand newseason in September. The IceRays willmake their home NAHL debut on Friday,October 1st at the American Bank Center. Don’t miss the action of IceRays hockey asthey enter one of the top developmentalleagues in the country.
