Tremendous improvement in a patient with MS in a short time… Cases from the home page of Michelle LuCafo, Fort Bragg student-homeopath

DR. JOSE COMES TO MENDOCINO When Cassandra Bricken, on holiday in Kerala, South India, met

Dr. Jose Issac, she had already been to an MD for a recently acquired infection and received antibiotics from him. But instead of taking them, the long-time homeopathic patient did some sleuthing and found the Government Homoeopathic Medical College, in Trivandrum, Kerala's capital. Dr. Jose (pronounced Jhos) Issac, who both taught and saw patients there, warmly welcomed the Western traveler in perfect English, and after prescribing a medication, asked if she would like to join him for dinner. They talked at length about his family’s four generations of teaching and practicing homeopathy in South India and his practices in Russia and Malaysia, about homeopathy in India and Australia, where Cassie had been born, compared to its underdog status in the United States, where she had been living for many years.

When she returned home to Albion, California she could not stop thinking about her experience in India and e-mailed Dr. Jose, asking if she could study with him. He wrote back immediately, “Come to India. I will teach you.” Cassie called about ten people she thought would be interested, inviting them to come with her.

At that moment, Shelly Garrison had come to a crossroads in her life, wondering what direction she was to take next. She was literally sitting, staring at her phone, “willing it to ring,” when Cassie called her to invite her along to India. Shelly says she “could feel the totality of yes.” She had been working with a local RN-homeopath and had

been looking for the proper educational path. She had to move her entire life around to go on the trip; but she could not say no to the opportunity it promised.

Cassie and Shelly spent almost four months living at Dr. Jose’s private clinic in Kerala, studying and observing him as he took patients in the evenings, six days a week. At the hospital Dr. Jose’s father founded in 1983, over five hundred patients are treated every day. Dr. Jose himself is able to see personally over 150 outpatients a day and has a private practice as well. His ability to prescribe so quickly comes from years of intense training and experience, and from generations of understanding the complex art and science of homeopathy. His father and grandfather were homeopaths, and now Dr. Jose’s son has graduated after a five-and-a-half-year training to become a medical doctor/doctor of homeopathy and will start his three-year post graduate program. It is surprising to note that not one in these four generations has ever had to go to a dentist, nor had need of any surgery.

Cassie and Shelly, on fire with their new knowledge, came back home and began to practice, with Dr. Jose’s backing. As successes in healing brought more word-of-mouth clients, and their practices grew, other people expressed an interest in learning homeopathy. They convinced Jose that he should come to Mendocino to teach and spread his knowledge of Classical Homeopathy in the United States.

That Dr. Jose is now sharing his knowledge with student practitioners here on the Mendocino coast is a remarkable benefit to the area. As the eight student-homeopaths treat their families, take patients and determine treatments for every ailment, their prescriptions are supported and corroborated by Dr. Jose by e-mail. Many of their patients are reporting excellent, even “miraculous” results. This could not have occurred in an earlier time; the Internet allows almost instant communication for rapid, proper treatments.

A HEALTH AND HEALING DREAMAlthough homeopathy may not be for everyone, if you’ve ever

wished there were some form of health care that was safe, natural, effective, had no side effects — oh, and didn’t break the bank every time you came down with something, it could be a bit of a dream come true. And it’s not from outer space: homeopathy has been used worldwide by millions of people for more than two hundred years, and is currently the fastest growing medical system (holding number-two status in healthcare usage) around the world. It addresses every type of illness, chronic condition or health crisis, short of surgery. In Great Britain, the Queen has her own homeopath. In Mexico, Australia, Cuba, Brazil, Argentina, South Africa, Russia, France, Germany, Greece, The Netherlands, Asia and beyond, homeopathy is widely used, trusted and integrated into everyday treatment. In India, the government

DR. JOSE ISSAC ON HOMEOpATHyIt is a holistic system of medicine, practiced in about 135 countries.

It is the safest system, since it uses sub-physiological doses. No medicine has been found to have any side effects in the last 200

years, since its beginning. It does not use any steroids or antibiotics

or man-made chemicals.

It works by stimulating the immune mechanism of one's body—

everyone has the capacity to repair their body and homoeopathy is just

stimulating that mechanism.

Homoeopathy has great scope on constitutional defects like Down's Syndrome, hyperkinetic children,

depression, strokes, allergies, asthma, prostate & breast cancers,

etc. It can cure many incurable diseases and drug induced

diseases.

The Government of India gives equal importance to all the systems by funding Allopathy, Homoeopathy

& Ayurveda. In India we have 200,000 homoeopathic practitioners,

40 pharmaceutical companies, 7,000 government dispensaries

and around 500 hospitals & 186 colleges exclusively for

homoeopathy.

them into categories that lead the practitioner to a remedy that will benefit whatever condition is present.

Symptoms are considered to be of utmost value, they are “friends” rather than “The Enemy” that must be vanquished. Homeopaths view symptoms as clues that lead to the detection of the underlying weakness that allows a disease to enter or persist, and treats the weakness, not the ailment itself.

“LIKE CURES LIKE”In other words, homeopathy does not treat disease, per se.

Instead, it strives to bring people to their full potential by supporting the body and whole person with the overlying first principal of “like cures like.” What does “like cures like” mean? A simple example would be running warm water on a burned finger rather than icing it — heat on a burn helps the burn. This primary concept was

“developed by Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843), a German physician, who was experimenting with cinchona bark (quinine) as a cure for malaria. When Hahnemann administered cinchona to himself, he developed the symptoms of malaria — fever, diarrhea, vomiting, pain, numb fingers and toes. But when quinine was given to a patient complaining of those same symptoms of malaria, he found it helped them fight the illness. From his initial experiment, Hahnemann and his students methodically tested thousands of substances in a

process called ‘provings.’” (quoted from www.amfoundation.org/homeopathinfo.htm).

EXpRESSION, NOT SUppRESSIONHomeopathy also adheres to the conviction that “suppression” of disease symptoms is a

major cause of more disease, that driving symptoms deeper into the body with pain killers or antibiotics can create chronic conditions and even more serious outbreaks of various related or unrelated other disorders later on in life. It teaches that disease must express itself rather than be pushed down or disguised — which actually brings up the question, “What is disease?” In homeopathy, apparently, disease has a different definition; it is considered more a messenger from the body that signals what it needs rather than something to be eradicated itself. The idea is that, with the immune system bolstered by homeopathic treatment, a person’s body is able to rebalance itself and diminish or destroy disease. The emphasis is much more on prevention through strengthening the whole person rather than responding only when crises arise.

Oftentimes, a homeopathic remedy will cause a temporary increase or worsening of symptoms as the disease exits the organism. This is called an “aggravation,” and is considered a sign that improvement is occurring, though it can be of concern to the patient. To a homeopath, an aggravation shows that the medicine is working, and is cause for celebration.

Another major divergence from Western thought is the actual size, duration and potency of the remedy. Homeopathic medicines are dispensed in tiny vials or folded papers filled with one or two poppy-seed-sized pills. These contain minute doses of dilutions of the healing substance, which have been “potentized.” One tiny-but-powerful pill can be the entire treatment for a week, a month, or even longer. Very often, too, lower potencies can be much more effective than larger doses, depending on the characteristics of the patient and indications of his symptoms, adding yet another layer of potentially confusing concepts to the collection of newness for a new homeopathic patient.

In homeopathy, one size definitely doesn’t fit all. It’s possible that two people might go to a homeopath complaining of the same affliction and come away with two completely different medicines, as opposed to Western medical traditions of giving one type of medicine to everyone with the same disease. The homeopathic remedy is given to the person, not to the condition.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO GET BETTER? HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?It is not possible to predict how long it might take for a remedy to take effect. There are

countless testimonials about the speed with which a therapy can work — overnight cures are not unusual — and, depending on the constitution of the patient and the duration of having had a disorder, it can also take more time or more trials to get to the right remedy. To a Western mindset, accustomed to instantaneous masking of pain or symptoms, it can seem that nothing is happening. In these cases, patience is an ally. Homeopathy is subtle and complex and its action can’t be predicted precisely, however the weight of evidence as to its effectiveness is convincing. For instance, Dr. Luc Montagnier, the French virologist who won the Nobel Prize in 2008 for discovering the AIDS virus (HIV), has surprised the scientific community with his strong support for homeopathic medicine despite quite intense scepticisim of it by Western science.

Homeopathic treatment is much less costly than other forms of treatment, too, because it concentrates on prevention and keeping the body and mind balanced rather than reacting to acute problems only. With so many bankruptcies occurring due to skyrocketing medical costs, an effective and inexpensive form of health maintenance and management, like homeopathy, may become more and more important as part of an integrative medical system.

Mendocino coast residents are fortunate to have a wide range of excellent health care options

equally esteems allopathic (conventional or Western), homeopathic, and Ayurvedic approaches as the country’s three primary medical systems.

With the rise in allopathic medicine in the United States, this sort of integration and trust in homeopathy has been absent since the early nineteen hundreds when the United States had its own twenty-two homeopathic medical schools and over a hundred homeopathic hospitals.

A COMpREHENSIVE MEDICAL SySTEMDespite its relative obscurity here, homeopathy offers treatment

for almost every chronic, acute or inherited health issue. For acne to autism, high blood pressure to asthma, menopausal issues to migraines, dental caries to the flu, epidemics of cholera and malaria to bipolar disorder—the list could go on interminably—there are confirmed homeopathic success stories.

Even with its widespread serious use, in the United States, it’s been looked at rather casually as something one might take for smallish worries like headaches or sleeplessness, and is sold, under no supervision, online and in many health food stores, to the detriment of homeopathy itself and the people who often overprescribe for themselves over the long term. Few Americans are aware of its long and successful applications worldwide, and even fewer know where to find a homeopath.

But now homeopathy is gaining traction again as a viable alternative to, or co-therapy with, conventional Western medicine here on the Mendocino coast because of Dr. Jose and his student-homeopaths. A third generation, much-revered physician (MD), homeopathic doctor and professor from the southernmost tip of India, Dr. Jose’s vast experience has made him so famous in India that the government calls on him in cases of widespread health threats like the cholera epidemic he averted in 1995 by organizing a team of doctors and students to administer 120,000 doses of homeopathic medicines in two days, a feat almost impossible to comprehend. Dr. Jose is a member of the Central Council of Homoeopathy, Member of Education, Finance and Journal Committee of the Council under the Government of India. He is the youngest of six people on this committee, which serves the entire country of India. He teaches Classical Homeopathy at the largest government-owned English-teaching homeopathic hospital in Asia, and now, here in Mendocno, to eight local women. These avid students study together intensely, on their own, and also with Dr. Jose when he visits here twice a year for three-week teaching intensives. The group, under his oversight and with his hands-on support, practices homeopathy on their families, and some also practice on patients of their own. (They are able to do this because California is a Health Freedom State under Senate Bill 577, section 2053.6., making the practice of homeopathy legal in the state.)

IT’S DIFFERENTHomeopathic practice is so dissimilar to what Westerners are accustomed that it requires

a bit of putting aside what are “normally” believed to be the conditions of disease and cure. Diagnosis is based primarily on, first, a comprehensive interview with a new patient that establishes his or her overall health and history — physical, mental, emotional, psychological and even ancestral — and then investigating all of his or her current symptoms, organizing

CHRONIC FATIGUE/EpSTEIN-BARR STOppED Sandi Neves-Smith was diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome four years ago.

The animated interior designer with indefatigable energy was suddenly laid low by the mysterious syndrome that affects hundreds of thousands of people and baffles doctors. She considered herself lucky to have found a physician in her home town, Yuba City, who specialized in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Epstein-Barr, and went on his experimental regimen of taking massive doses of a drug called Valtrex.

It was expensive, three hundred dollars a month and not covered by insurance, and she did not know (or at the time even care) about its side effects. All she knew was it helped her get out of bed and she could go on with her life. She relapsed several times, however, and felt fearful about her future with this devastating degenerative illness.

In the third year of the disease she was introduced to homeopathy by her niece, one of Cassandra’s patients here on the north coast. Willing by then to give just about anything a try, Sandi made an appointment with Cassie and went home with a remedy. There was an immediate and strong aggravation; she could barely leave her bed for three days, but then began to rally. She says: “I took the initial remedy for eight months and was so much better. Then Cassie said I should stop. I was afraid to stop because every time I stopped the Valtrex I would have a relapse. I trusted her though, just beginning to understand that homeopathy doesn’t work the same way as Western medicine, and I did stop taking it. Now it’s been nine months and I don’t have any symptoms of Epstein-Barr.”

available to them, traditional as well as alternative. The addition of having Dr. Jose Issac teaching Classical Homeopathy in our midst adds one more choice for maintaining a healthful, vibrant life. Having a world-renowned doctor verifying prescriptions not only affords confidence to the practitioners, but to their patients as well. Dr. Jose sees as many cases as he can when he is here teaching. He will return to Mendocino from April 4 until April 18, 2012. An appointment can be made with him by calling Cassandra or Shelly. Student-homeopaths who take patients are listed below. QUADRIpLEGIC NOW TAKES NO pHARMACEUTICALS — HOpES TO WALK UNASSISTED WITHIN THE NEXT TWO yEARS

Tim O’Flaherty shattered his fourth vertebrae in a horrible fall eight years ago and became completely paralyzed from the neck down. Afterward, he was in a lot of pain and was taking, as he says, a “mountain of pharmaceuticals” and experiencing a lot of unpleasant side effects from the many fistfuls of pills he took every day. He was referred to Cassie, who worked homeopathically at first to target connective tissue for a hip replacement he'd recently had before the fall, that kept going out —“and it worked.” After a short time on homeopathic medicine, Tim was able to reduce the number of pharmaceuticals he was on. Feeling encouraged by this progress and by a personal appointment with Dr. Jose when he came to Mendocino, Tim accepted an invitation from Dr. Jose to come to his guesthouse in Kerala overlooking the Arabian Sea, for five weeks. Incredibly, Tim got to India completely on his own. While living in Kerala, Tim was able to stop taking all other medications. He says it’s so peaceful at the Issac private clinic that there are no distractions from healing and he doesn’t need anything more than the homeopathic remedies he takes there. He also met another doctor in Kerala who does stem cell therapy. Dr. P.S. John offered to allow Tim to be part of an experimental project. With stem cells mined from his own bone marrow, injections were administered into his system to help rebuild damaged nerves and tissues. So far, he has had three injections. Dr. Jose is very impressed with the outcome of the injections and hopes to work with this physician on future cases. The time spent with Dr. Jose, along with the stem cell injections, has been so beneficial that Tim will continue the experiment until the twelve prescribed injections have been administered, and will continue working homeopathically as well with Dr. Jose and Cassie.

Tim says that hand-in-hand homeopathic and stem cell treatments have greatly reduced the spasticity that he felt imprisoned him in his body for years. At UCSF Medical Center, he is considered the “poster boy” for spinal cord injuries. Physicians, nurses and physical therapists there are amazed at the improvements in his mobility and strength. He hopes to be able to walk without his walker within the next two years. He says, “I am a total believer. Spasms and tightness are relieved, my hands have unclenched and, slowly, this is healing. It’s far beyond anyone’s predictions. I still have a long way to go, but I've come a long way.”
