President’s MessageBy Ed Walz

[email protected] - 908.902.0240

Happy summer to all our residents and thank you to all who received a letter from our 'Drive-by' com-mittee for following though and with our requests. The village looks really good. Also, thanks to those residents who take pride in how their property looks and do regular maintenance to keep C.G.L. the 'Gem of Whiting.'

Just a reminder, please make an effort to come out and hear what our Mayor, Ken Palmer, has to say about the happenings in and around Whiting. He will be speaking to our residents on Friday, July 20th at 1:00 PM in Lakeside Hall. Of course, refreshments will be served, that's always a drawing card.

We have experienced some problems in May with the pumps for our water company, which our top notch maintenance department handled so that the most we, the residents noticed was low water pressure for about half a day. Believe me, the problem lasted much longer but they were on the job.

Progress is being made getting all the house files transferred into an online system. It started out slowly as paper clips and staples slowed up the process. Once that problem was resolved, the whole job moved along much more smoothly. We are getting it done.

There has been a whole lot of discussion about the fountain in the front lake and we (at this point in time) have not yet come to a solution on what to do. It is a work in progress and hopefully by the time this issue comes out, it will have been resolved.

One more thing, running this village is like run-ning a small town. There are 1,236 homes and close to 2,000 residents who all think that their problem is the most important. We, the Board of Directors are working on many issues at any given time and what may seem like an earth-shattering dilemma to you, we may be dealing with something like the water pres-sure, a water main break or inspectors from the DEP; your problem or situation will be resolved, just give us time. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Well, it is summertime and things seem to simmer down during this season, so I wish everyone a happy, healthy and safe summer. Enjoy your family and friends as we wait for August and its weather.

Maintenance Report

This month my report will be about attic fans. When we were doing the roof project, we encouraged residents to remove their attic fans because the new roofs would have ridge vents and this is a township code.

Ridge vents are a 2 inch wide slit opening on each side of the roof peak that runs the width of the roof from side to side. It is about 45 feet on a single roof and 85 feet on a duplex. We also have 2 gable vents on each side of the house which is sufficent for ven-tilation of the attic, so we could eliminate attic fans.

Some people elected to keep the fans. Besides making electric bills higher, the resident is responsible for repairing or replacing the fan. Animals, such as racoons, can get into the attic and cause damage. The village is only responsible for gable vents on the side of the house if broken or animal problem.

We are in the process of replacing all gable vents with aluminum vents that last forever.

If anyone is interested in removing their attic fan, call the office or see me. The company that did all our roofs will remove the fans, put new plywood and resh-ingle the roof. The cost is about $150.00. This is about the same price it would cost to replace the attic fan.

Any questions, please call Rich Nemeth.

Creative Writersby Charlene Roberts

Goin' Fishin' has always been a part of my life. My husband is a devout fol-lower of casting out line into the water and waiting for that "hit" that will land him the big one. You can enjoy some great fishing right here in Cedar Glen Lakes, or you

can wander through the Pinelands discovering many waterways that will satisfy even the hardiest of fisher-men. It's a sport that requires patience and a knowledge of just where and when to fish with the best results, or maybe it's just the love for the game together with some luck that guides your quest in landing that one beauty of a trout....

up the river delights awaitforging with paddle, canoe, and some bait.I alight upon morning, the mist rising fast, and soon I am fishing, my rod and line cast.Ahead in the waters a beaver swims through, eyeing my presence with thoughtful view.He dives for reeds way down below, then into his hut he secretly goes.Over there is a heron who walksso quiet and carefully as he stalks.Stabbing the water, a fish his prize, upended, it slides down his gullet alive.Soon there's a stir on my line as I waitfor the moment to pull as it takes the bait.A fine fight ensues as I reel him in,a beauty, a trout, so sleek and thin.I hold him, and smile as the colors shine,a rainbow of nature, so perfect and fine.A good day I thought, as I lower him downinto the water without a sound. He flips his tail, as if to saythank you for visiting, now go away!Down the river I drift to the shore, and dock the canoe by the bank once more.Day is now ending, tomorrow awaits,up the river I'll go againarmed with my paddle, canoe, and some bait...

is important during this hot month. Early morning is preferable. As flowers bloom and mature, this would be the time to deadhead the old blooms. Fertilizing plants every two weeks is a must. If you attended

our May meeting, Busy Bees NJ spoke on how to keep honey bees healthy and DO NOT use pesticides. Hum-mingbirds are also affected adversely by pesticides. Remember to change your hummingbird feeders every 2-3 days during the hot weather.

Security Patrol"I WANT yOu!" I'm having a little trouble re-

membering who said that. Maybe it was a police of-ficer with a warrant for my arrest, or maybe the IRS for tax invasion. Now it comes to me, it was uncle Sam. "I Want you" is the new catch phrase for the Security Patrol. We are in search of a few good men and women to join our club. We are a group of 39 volunteers who patrol our community with the determination to keep us safe and secure. With that being said, we would like to welcome our newest member Mary Quitsch.

I cannot express the importance of the C.G.L. of-fice having an emergency phone number and contact person on file for you. If you choose not to have it in the C.G.L. phonebook, they will not include it. you can request the form at the office where it will be put on file. Something that may seem so trivial can make the difference between being safe or sorry.

The Security Patrol meets the second Monday of each month. Our next meeting is July 9th. Refresh-ments start at 6 pm, followed by our business meeting at 7 pm in West Hall. Please join us and bring a friend.

I would once again like to thank those who patrol and those who donate food to the Whiting Food Pantry at our meetings.

My final thought for the month: Happiness is be-ing content with what you have, living in freedom and liberty, having a good family life and good friends.

Happy Independence Day!Patricia Mironowicz

Its summer time and a great time to get some shots at the beach. On crowded beaches you can shoot the people and activities. On remote beaches you can look for wildlife, patterns in the sand, great cloud formations against the water, and sunrises.

The challenge with beach shots is getting the proper exposure. The bright scene tricks you camera into thinking there is too much light, so the camera will cut back on exposure, therefore you should increase the exposure slightly. If your camera has “scene” modes, use the one for snow or beach.

A great way to enhance your images is using a polarizing fi lter, which cuts glare the same as polarizing sunglasses. This fi lter will make the sky in their images darker (and the clouds brighter), it will show the detail in the sand, and to remove the refl ections in the water.

That’s it for this month. As always you can send me an email at [email protected] with any photographic questions. Visit my web site, www.kirmsphotography.com, if you’d like to see more of my images. Keep shooting and trying to improve your images, but most importantly, have fun with your camera.
