Now - The HardCanada's thousands of living room cow-boys can now rid themselves of theirinferiority complex and work on theiridentity as Canadians. There's a new star

Part Begins

Donnelly Rhodes, star of "Hard Part"

in the house, in fact there are several, and they had their twinkle generated bya new Canadian movie, "The Hard PartBegins", a raw picture of what life isreally about in the Country music scene.Starring roles for the flick are taken byDonnelly Rhodes and Paul Bradley withNancy Belle Fuller and Cliff Carrol. The music stars behind the movie areCarrol, Louise Rockwood, Zeke Sheppard,Ian Guenther and Willi Morrison. BothMorrison and Guenther. of Three HatsProductions, scored the soundtrack whichwas backed up instrumentally by MelAucoin, piano and rhythm guitar; JohnnyBourque, bass; Roddy Lee, drums; BobLucier, steel guitar; Hal Greer, acousticbass; Fred Mollin, acoustic guitar, tam-bourine and drums; John Shand, electricguitar and sax; George Semkiw, mouthguitar; Zeke Sheppard, harmonica analIan Guenther, fiddle, and acoustic guitar.Backup' vocals were supplied by FredMollin, Andy Geatrix and Al Stewart. The pretty young singing star of "HardPart", Louise Rockwood a native of Sask-atoon, hasn't walked the straight andnarrow of country music. She's ratherunique in that she has a working know-ledge of contemporary rock, pop, folkand country. The latter, of course is, her firstlove but her experience with the otherforms of music have given her a definite edgeover her counterparts who have only "walkedthe country line". Rockwood prefers tothink of Canadian country as progressivecountry. She, like many who have seen"Hard Part", would like to see more of thistype of movie, which would only help tocreate a "star system" in Canadian country.Louise Rockwood now has a foundation on .

which to build her country career and shejust might be a contender for that "star sys-tem" she was talking about. Besides the"Hard Part" soundtrack, A&M have releaseda Rockwood single, "The Hard Part Begins(Every Mile)" with her as a solo and the samesong on the flip as a duo with Zeke Sheppard. The "Hard Part" theme was penned by LeonDubinsky and published through AmpleParking Publications with Almo Music ofCanada (CAPAC).Cliff Carrol isn't a newcomer to the business. The thirty-one year old native of Bancroft,Ontario has been singing country music fortwelve years and he has enough practical

happenings to view the "Hard Part" as if itwere a leaf out of his own book of exper-iences. He's had his ups and downs in Ottawa,Detroit and Toronto as well as many othercities across North America, but he contin-ues to hang his hat in Toronto. Although .

Carrol has run the gamut of disappointmentshe really doesn't complain. He regards eachsituation as his own making and it 'was onlya strong religious faith that pulled himthrough when it looked hopeless. The movie,of course, was his first big break and onehe hopes he can build on - not as a moviestar but more as a country entertainer in anindustry that lacks domestic name artistsand groups.Carrol was discovered by movie producerJohn Hunter and director Paul Lynch whowere directed to a bar in Old Toronto whereCarrol was fronting a group known as theHitchhikers. They were immediately turnedon by Carrol's singing ability and his imageas a country performer. He was just whatthey were looking for as a principal for theirDonnelly Rhodes movie. Now Carrol isreaching for the brass ring of Louise Rock -wood's "Progressive Country" and A&M, newbelievers in this form of music, have put anenormous amount of promotion and hardwork behind a campaign to bring the "HardPart" stars up to a level of national recog-nition. Carrol's vehicle, besides the "HardPart" soundtrack, is a single from the album,"The Way Of Life", a Carrol original withthe flip, a Ward/Ward/Morrison writing,"Prospecting For Jesus".As one of the founders of Three Hats Prod-uctions, Ian Guenther is far removed fromwhat you would expect of a country musicarranger/producer. Perhaps his only claim tothat end of the business is his shyness. Heprefers to remain in the background and usehis talents to mold or develop those ofothers, whether they be country, rock orwhat have you. An accomplished violinist, heis probably better known as a "fiddle player".He arranges strings for many sessions includ-

He wasasked the following questions:RPM: Do you think there is a Canadiancountry industry?IG: Yes, I'm just finding that out. I just gotinto, country music for the first time when Idid the soundtrack ("Hard Part"). I reallyhadn't produced anythingcountry before.RPM: Is the climate ready for Canadiancountry?IG: Sure, it's a good time music and that'swhy it's doing as well as it has so far.RPM: What more can be done to get thepublic to accept it?IG: More concentration on quality. The ideaof country means normally, to record corn -

panies and people like that, low budget and,I know you can do stuff with a really lowbudget, whether it's country or rock or MOR,but the extra touch of having a good budgetto work with, comes out in the other end.It comes out in quality.RPM: Is there a second hand feeling inCanada for country?IG: I've gotten that remark from otherpeople, but when they heard this soundtrackthey say "Hey, that sounds almost likeNashville". So it's obvious a sound that theyhaven't been used to hearing up here. I knowthat it's a little different sound because ofmy idea of writing and producing and playingfiddle, coloured by all the other musicalfields that I work in.RPM: Did you find much difficulty in piec-ing together a storyline in song for the movie?IG: It was one of the nicest projects I'veever gotten into. We tried to write the tunesas though they were classics and that they hadalready existed for years and years, so theywould fit the really honest situation thatthe movie keeps coming up with. almost since day one, ten years ago. This pre-occupation with our own existence seems tooffend some people. Other magazines, othermedia, carry on seldom acknowledging theirown existence. RPM's brief stay on earthseems to have been marked by a continuousself-consciousness. We not only do, we are.

Perhaps it is because we surprise ourselvesby our survival from week to week. It oftenhas been literally from week to week. Per-haps it is because we are doing what so fewothers have done before.

We operate in an industry dominated almosttotally by foreign corporations,Aud yet weourselves seem suicidally natiO.KaMtit. yyyyebite, repeatedly, the hand that feedsili.tlif tenthe hand gives us a good slap, but more oftenit simply refuses us the pat we need eachweek to keep happy and healthy.Lately we have been suffering from a lack ofpats. Shakespeare was probably not too hipto the newsprint situation so he didn't pro-vide us with a nice short quote to cover thewhole subject in five words but suffice itto say that the costs of producing any kindof printed matter have jumped astronomi-cally in the past eighteen months, to thepoint where publications are dropping likeflies. Some of the oldest, best respectedpublications in the world have hit thecanvas in the past few years.

Who is next, we can't say. Whether we'll gonow, later or never, we can't say either. There are too many "if's".But there's one "if" that I would like to

present. If the old thing does go the way ofLook, then what? Who steps in? Who doesthe job?

Grealis and his magazine are like prehistoriccreatures. You can't keep a music trade goingin this country, they said. You can't do this, you can't do that. He did and he did ithonestly and fairly. What the next guy, ifa next guy is silly enough to step into thelion's den, is going to be like is anyone'sguess.

My thought is that there won't be a nextguy. Oh a few quickies will come and go,there's no doubt about that, but I'll bet myentire Johnny Horton collection, that if OldPub fades from the scene, it'll be a long, long time before anyone is able to fill thefootsteps. This isn't scare talk. Old Pub, knowing himas I do, will probably hang.on with whiteknuckles until the last blow falls, then again,

the world may turn topsy turvy and he'll bevacationing in the West Indies once a monthnext year. But for the present, there areproblems, serious problems. What the endresult will be is anyone's guess but it seemsto me that what is needed is a lot of soulsearching, both by those of us with RPMand those who support, or would support it.

A crisis of sorts has been reached and thereis a great deal at stake. I hope, for my sakeand the sake of a lot of people and a lot ofideals, that the right conclusions are drawnand the right action is taken.

GIBBS BACK INTOCOUNTRY FRAYFrankie Gibbs, off the scene for some time, returns with his United Artists single,"Maggie". The single is part of the CanadianTalent Library's plan to introduce newfaces via a single which could lead to analbum session if the response warrants same.

Gibbs is no stranger to Canadian countryhaving released on the WEA label previously. His last release was "Dry Your Eyes". Boththe "Maggie" side and the flip of the newsingle, "Don't Step On My Dreams" areGibbs originals and are published throughUnart and Conestoga Music-BMIC.

ABOUT THAT OTHERCOMMUNICATION MEET!Nov. 11/74I think everyone in the recording industryagrees that there is a need for communica-tion and understanding. However, it is timeto add my comments to those of the othercritics of the RPM communication gather-ings, particularly C9.Conventions can he good if they are wellplanned and have a purpose in mind. Forinstance, I can think of no better way tospend my time and money than at theMIDEM gathering in France once a year,or at the IMIC put on by Billboard in theUnited States. At both of these conventions, the opportunity exists to see everyone in thesame place, without travelling all overEurope, or the world. They have greatspeakers and instructive work shops whichdivide the group into workable units forthe purpose of learning. I personally feelthat the time and money involved in theseoutings is well invested in the future of mycompany. However, ours is a small company, and it isdifficult to handle the expenses involved inattending conventions every time we turnaround. It is not fair to the smaller recordand publishing companies to expect themto be able to afford to attend each and everyseminar or convention going. With so manythings being offered here and around theworld, it is necessary to choose priorities.

My observation of the "communication"seminars, provided by RPM and particularlythe latest one, is that everyone has a greattime, has a great deal to drink and eat, spends too much money and comes awaywondering what they learned, except thatWalt Grealis still says that they are doingeverything wrong. We don't have to betold every week that there are problems inthe industry. We are the industry and weknow. To continuously pay money to betold this, becomes an increasing insult toeveryone's intelligence. As I said in the beginning, the need forcommunication and understanclin* doesexist. We all know and recognize it, but Ifail to see that the solutions lie in the pres-ent methods advocated by RPM at thesemeetings and in their editorials. For one thing, these gatherings attract alarge cross section of the recording industry, from promo men to clerks to presidents. It is most difficult to engage speakers whohave something relevant to say to the wholegroup. If the groups were to be divided intosmall work shops and the speakers chosen

by subject matter relative to the group, atleast one has an opportunity to pick-upsomething directly relevant to his or herarea. All segments of the industry face prob-lems. Examination of the problems in amore informal way might be a start on thesolutions. Individuals who are not used tolarge crowds are reticent to stand up to amicrophone and address a throng on thesubject of some small matter that he ishasseling with in his company, but he mightask the expert in the context of a smallergroup. It would be a start.

On the subject of editorials in RPM, I too amnausiated to the point of ceasing to readthat page, since we know in advance that itwill be some tirade about the general incom-petence of the industry. You know, for abunch of no talent, no account slobs, aswe seem to be portrayed in RPM, some ofus are doing just fine, thank you!

CANADA IS CAPAC COUNTRYCAPAC - the Composers, Authors and Publishers Association of Canada -has always been involved with the world of Candian country music.

Some of the great veteran stars - men like Wilf Carter, the late Don Messer,Stu Davis, and Hal Lonepine - have long been part of CAPAC.

CAPAC continues to represent their interests, just as it represents those of anew breed of Cimadian country star - people like Stompin' Tom Connors,Roy Payne, Fred McKenna, Murray McLauchlan, Tom Kelly, StevedoreSteve Foote, Harry Hibbs, and the Family Brown.

CAPAC's main role is to collect performing rights royalties from theorganizations which use music in Canada, and distribute the money to thepeople who write and publish it.

Last year, CAPAC members - and members of foreign societies affiliatedwith CAPAC- shared close to $8 1/2 million. That, as they say in thecountry, ain't hay.

If you write or publish country music - or any kind of music - you needto know more about how CAPAC can help you. We'll be glad to hear from you.

in the movie ... going along the road andthat kind of thing. A little bit of a comedyone with "You Don't Have To Be A MotherTo Wear A Rose" which David Essig andmy wife wrote. Another is "Waiting ForYour Ship To Come In" and where ithappens in the movie is where King returnsfrom having been put down by the recordcompany and as he's returning Jenny Frame(Louise Rockwood), is singing "You remindme of a man I once knew - waiting for hisship come in ... it all really hung togetherwell. It was a good project all around. Themovie people were really professional and sowere the musicians, especially Eastwind whoreally helped me a lot because I was brandnew country. I went in with some ofthese tunes and they made some comments, suggested some changes, some of which Iaccepted. They really helped out a lot.RPM: Do you think the movie will besuccessful?

IG: It sure got all the possible critical raveit could from all parts of the media, andnow it's really up to the promotion that'sdone on it. Maybe the album will turn thepeople onto the movie or vice versa ... andit's basically up to the general public. Mak-ing records, I can insist on taking a recordto a certain point but I can't insist on peopleliking it. I can take care of the quality allthe way up to the actual record that'sreleased, and I can even talk to'some pro-grammers and try to convince them, butthere's no way you can hard sell the public.RPM: The movie and the soundtrack aren'treally restricted to country fans?IG: No, it's a human thing. I don't want toassume that it's going to influence anyone

but I know there's a really good feeling anda real high energy thing that we got ... fromthe musicians being so good and the amountof effort put into it by George Semkiw andMark Smith (engineers), the singers, and allthe parts that really fit together. And some-how it is slightly unique, but I don't know ifit's going to influence anybody.RPM: What's your opinion of A&M?IG: Well I've placed a few things with A&M- Bruce Miller for example, and as a com-pany I find you can talk to the president, the promo people and the A&R guy and, over the pas.t couple of years, it's just devel-oped that th414e interested in what we'redoirtg and we like their reputation and welike the way we can communicate withevery facet of their record company. It'sreally easy to get hold of them on the phone... and they return phone calls ... a lot ofcompanies don't.RPM: Do you think with A&M's attitudetoward country that this could be a turningpoint for the country industry?IG: I sure hope so. There's an awful lot ofgood performers who don't record, or whoget stuck in some really bad deals becauseof a lack of managers or people who canlook after the artists and handle theirbusiness ventures honestly.RPM: Do you think the potential forCanadian country is there?IG: Yes ... there's lots of good writersaround, great studios, great engineers, excel-lent studio musicians, and a lot of goodproducers.

* * * * * * * * *One point that Gunether made about countryis that it shouldn't be restricted as a vehiclefor the entertainment of only one segment

RPM 30111174 - - - 9

of our population. Says Guenther: "I thinkcountry music with real strong melodies anda really good beat, can be treated in differentways. It doesn't just have to be super, simplebasic stuff. You can really add a lot ofcolours to it. You can really fill out thespectrum."Zeke Sheppard is another Canadian talentthat could emerge through the success ofthe "Hard Part" film. Sheppard, like Carrolhas been a part of the music industry formany years but has never really been recog-nized for his talents. He is somewhat buriedin the soundtrack but you can hear him sing-ing the part of King and with Louise Rock-wood on "The Hard Part Begins" (side two).

WRITER TRIP FOR PAYNEWITH NEW RCA RELEASES

One of RCA's favourite Newfies, Roy Payne, who wrote "The Man In The Moon Is ANewfie", has figured significantly in thewriting material of three recent singlesreleased on the RCA label.Tommy Hunter would appear to have hisfoot in the chart door with a Payne penning,"Born To Be A Gypsy", and George Hamil-ton IV is now beginning to get a few biteson the flip of his Tom Gallant single, "BackTo Down East Country", which is a Payneoriginal, "Where The Blue Waters Foam".Of prime interest to Payne is his ownrelease, "That's Why I'm In Love With Life",a strong follow-up to his "Whisper To MeTina" single which has enjoyed fifteenweeks on the RPM Country Playlist. All three of the above sessions were pro-duced by Jack Feeney at RCA's Torontostudios.

John Allan Cameron's kind ofcountry is in a different place. It's almost impossible for a

fiddler and guitarist who grew upin Cape Breton to be anythingbut a country boy.

But John Allan Cameron's kindof country is in a different place.

It could date anywhere from16th century Scotland to 20thcentury Nashville.

And it's always unmistakable. And it's always John Allan Cameron.

When Ellenson first heard plans of the labeltrip by the Grateful Dead, he visited thegroup in California and told them about hisown company flying the Round banner. They apparently freaked out when theyheard the story and agreed to, allow Ellensonto import the Hunter album into Canadadirectly.Ellenson was taking a chance on Hunter, being as he doesn't tour or make live appear-ances, but he has chalked up over 200 sales ofthe $7.98 album in his Bloor,Street store injust a few weeks of release. week that there are problems in the indus-try. We are the industry and we know".(See letters to the Editor)Sorry Mr. Altman, I disagree. If there areproblems in the industry and if the indus-try is aware of them - it's not saying muchfor the industry. Where are the solutionsgoing to come from? Where can you getour problems out in the open? Must wecontinue to hide our heads in the sand?Of course we're all going to have a greattime at Big Country and we'll probablyhave a good deal to drink and to eat, butwhat's most important is that we'll becommunicating with one another. We'llbe sharing the problems of the industrywith each other. Even the Nashville -thinking dudes will be here and theymight find themselves getting "turnedon" at the enthusiasm being displayed

by the artists, producers, managers, pro-grammers and record people who havecome from many parts of Canada to sup-port something they believe in.Sure, we can editorialize on what wethink could improve the industry, andyou don't have to agree with or even readour views, but that's what communica-tion is all about. You have the opportun-ity to counter any of our views. I woulddearly like to join our friends in the sand-box and "dream the impossible dream",but we have to live with the reality oflife. RCA ISSUES ELVIS'"TALKING RECORD"RCA Canada have issued a special release ofElvis Presley's talking album, "Having FunWith Elvis On Stage".The package was origi-nally pressed on Boxcar Records and restric-ted for sale only as a souvenir album at Pres-ley's personal appearances. The album was released by popular demandand was to coincide with Presley's tour ofthe U.S.

The Presley "Stage" album is comprised ofoff-the-cuff remarks made by Presley duringhis performances on recent concert tours. An 8 -track tape has also been issued.

artists and songwriters, which in itself isan indication that the industry has mademoves upwards. Take a look at this week'sissue of RPM and you will see the back-bone of the industry. The Big CountrySunday Showcase will bring front andcentre, those Canadian country acts whoare intent on making Canadian Countrya habit rather than a cast off. LouiseRockwood, a new country discovery re-fers to the music we are here to discussat Big,Country as "progressive country".In order to progress you must communi-cate and that's what we're doing herethis weekend - and every week throughthe pages of RPM.Sitting in front of me are a dozen Cana-dian and foreign trade magazines. Theyall have editorials. They range anywherefrom the problems faced by the risingcost of paper to production inefficien-cies. All but one contains letters to theeditor. The trades I looked at had noth-ing to do with the music industry, butthey did have to do with freedom of ex-pression.What freedom of expression is, could bewhat Mark Altman wrote above. It is alsothe freedom for someone to disagree. Iwill disagree vehemently with anyonewho denies me freedom of expression- and wars have been fought over thatvery cause.Perhaps we are getting to the root of theproblem in country music. I would sug-gest to every songwriter that his lyricsbe checked carefully so they don't indi-cate problems or recommend remedies.Note to daily papers: We don't have tobe told every day that there are problemsin the world. We are citizens of the worldand we know.

The incomparable Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn really get around. Andwherever they go, they carry sound insurance-the ultra -reliable portablesound system that gets things together so perfectly that Conway andLoretta use it in preference to costly, built-in house P.A. set-ups! Thesystem they rely on is the Shure Vocal Masterit's made to order forperformers on the move. SINGING NEWFOUNDLANDERHEARD IN BUCKINGHAM PALACESays Michael T. Wall: "You've got to be apersonality if you want to be an entertainer",and the "Singing Newfoundlander" spendssixteen to eighteen hours daily doing justthat. Armed with maps and brochures, ofNewfoundland, his latest Banff album andwearing his $500 gold suit with a green map

Michael T. Wall, The Singing Newfoundlander

of Newfoundland emblazoned on the back,Wall sings and talks himself into situationswhere most of his breed would fear to tread.

The Michael T. Wall sound has now becomea significant part of prison therapy (Wark-worth and others). He has devoted countlesshours to the entertainment of inmates ofseveral penitentiaries throughout Ontario. Sohighly regarded is Wall by the inmates ofWarkworth, they arranged for him to havehis own prisoner's number. Even up atSussex Street in Ottawa (the Prime Minister'sresidence) they are familiar with the SingingNewfoundlander. Across the sea and intoBuckingham Palace ... and there he is . .

Michael T. Wall, and he has letters to provethat England's Queen and Pierre Trudeauare aware of his activities.

Wall has a persistent habit of showing up,in person or in print at the most unusualplaces. He was passing out his brochures, maps and albums at the recent CanadianEntertainment Conference and has been aconstant supporter of RPM's country andcommunication happenings as well as the

trade magazine itself. If it has to do withCanadian entertainment, Michael T. Wallwill make himself readily available. Afterhis seventh show at Warkworth he noted:"Money isn't everything - I love my workand making people happy, and I'm goingback again".

Wall even shook the U.S. "Sunshine State"of Florida when he appeared at the CastawayMotel in Daytona Beach on the TommyBrown show. He was backed by the Nash-ville Mustangs who picked up easily on theNewfoundland country stylings by Wall. After Big Country, Wall is scheduled toappear at the Newfoundland reunion, aweek long event to be held at the Horseshoein Toronto Dec. 9 through the 14th.A single, "Shake My Hand, I'm From New-foundland", culled from Wall's album, "TheSinging Newfoundlander", has been receiv-ing good airplay and adds to Wall's promo-tion items.

CJCI'S SNOW GOLFGROWS AND GROWSWhat started out as an off beat promotionfor CJCI, the ten thousand watter in PrinceGeorge, has turned into the community'sbiggest annual event. Snow Golf, the sportdreamed up by CJCI's Don Prentice, hasbecome part of the life of the town way upin central British Columbia. The First Annual Snow Golf Tournamenttook place in Prince George in 1971. A totalof twelve people showed up to knock thetennis ball -sized purple snow golf ballaround the course. The following year, two hundred and fifty participated, whilein 1973, a crowd of five hundred tookvirtually all the daylight available to worktheir way around the "whites". Last year, five hundred and thirty snow golfers were

registered in half an hour and well overtwo thousand had to be turned away.Today the World Championship of SnowGolf is a significant event in the community.A local workshop for the handicappedchurns out special snow golf tees for usein Prince George and elsewhere. A nationaladvertiser, Labatt's, co-sponsors the event.Countless local businesses, from pizzaparlours to office equipment companies, use the Snow Golf tourney as a vehicle forpromotion and public relations.By way of extending the good times hadin Prince George each year to the rest of theworld, Rada Records of Vancouver, is releas-ing an album of X-rated snow golf humourrecorded live, during the playing of thenineteenth hole, at Inn of the North Ball-room. The LP by Nestor Pistor, is availableby mail order from CJCI.

The station began itson -air promotion of the big event in October, giving away albums and tickets right up toshow day.Headlining the two hour show were Mara-thon recording artists'Johnny Gold andTheresa Cleary. The station's on -air person-alities were also given an opportunity tomeet face to face with several hundred oftheir local listeners. The big country showwas an opportunity for several up-and-coming local country acts to strut their stuff. One of the standouts was Blain Henshaw, who introduced his new Dominion single,"The Man It's Made Of Me", a Henshaw

CKX INSTITUTESPLAYLIST CHANGEWhile not changing their proven successfulprogramming format, CKX is taking a newapproach to their playlisting. Basically, thedifference will be that as a song fitting theirformat breaks, the station will air the single. However, if an album release follows, the LPwould replace the single, thus making theentire available to announcers for play. Thiswould mean a substantial increase in theexposure of popular albums in their broad-cast area. CKX feels this move will benefitboth the station and the record companies, and become a useful vehicle for promotionof new albums. CKX is still programming topforty material, but will no longer run off a"Playlist" as such. Instead the station will bemailing copies of what they are playingand what they have added twice per month.Current line-up at CKX: Ron Thompson6-9AM; Jim Steele 9AM-1 PM; Alex Docking1-4PM; Dan Radford, MD, 4-6PM; Les Car-rothers 6PM-MN; Garry Kroeger MN-6AM; andChris MacGregor Swing evenings and mid-nighters. The even-ing went over well, with several stations inthe area picking up the idea. The station also reports that the songs caus-ing their phones to ring off the wall aredone by Jon Johnson, and titled "Baby(I'm Falling In Love With You)" and"Brother Of The Road". They cannot playthese numbers often enough to please theirlistening audience. The station has alreadybegun to play Jonson's latest, "Raining OnToronto", which has yet to be released onwax.

IT'S A&M COUNTRY. CFVR SPOOKS OUTFRASER VALLEYThe CFVR/Abbotsford Halloween Special,a one -hour program, was something a littledifferent. The show, aired from 11 PM -MN,and hosted by Rick Dennis (with all thelights on), combined excerpts from classichorror movie soundtracks with exponents ofthe mock-horrorics of rock, including AliceCooper, Black Sabbath, et al. Soundtrackexcerpts were keyed to individual selections,i.e. Maria Ouspenskaya reciting the eulogyto the Wolf Man was followed by Five ManElectrical Band's "Werewolf", and "TheCurse of the Mummy" soundtrack excerptwas followed by Stevie Wonder's "Super-stition". Other Halloween hits includedPowerhouse's "Dance of the Swamp Wom-an" and Eagles "Witchy Woman". And, ofcourse, the show wouldn't have been com-plete without Bobby "Boris" Pickett's"Monster Mash". This was all topped offwith Edgar Winter's "Frankenstein".

CFVR reports still getting feedback on thepiece concerning the station in the SpecialWestern Edition of RPM, with calls beingreceived from Montreal, Toronto and Van-couver offering taped specials and asking forplaylists. Also, they have been receivinggood response from the various Vancouverrecord promo people. Here at RPM, we'rehappy to have been of assistance.

Sooner or later Newfie's SuperStars who live in Toronto returnhome to play the Strand in theAvalon Mall which might bedubbed the Showcase for Stars. The latest, MATADOR Record-ing Artist JERRY ELI, playedthe STRAND last week to kickoff a 30 day tour of his nativeProvince.

The versatile ContemporaryCountry Artist from start tofinish put on a rousing shownight after night before a jammedhouse. Without gimmicks, streetlevel language or "Upalong put-on" Jerry demonstrated that heis as attractive on stage as he wasfeared on the soccer pitch yearsago. He tore down the housewith songs like "My CountryCanada", which has been ridingthe Charts here in Newfie allsummer.

Also deserving special credit ishis backup group The Jaylerswho helped keep their Star frontand centre. Quite at contrast tosome of the backup groups thatused to seemingly upstage OurFavourite Son Harry Hibbs.

Jerry kicks off his 30 one nightshows on the Burin Peninsula thisweek. Looks like he deserves themantle "Newfie's First CountryGentleman."!

COUNTRY MUSIC GETTING AROUNDOnce Newfoundlanders were chiefly interested in Newfoundland tunes, while Prairiepeople listened to western songs. Now you have all of Canada listening to everyone'ssongs. The villagers are listening, town folks are too, not to mention the city types.

And that's what's happened to country music. It's for all people, everywhere.

It wasn't always like that. BMI Canada and Canada's country music have grown up to-gether. Most of the creators of this music had their start with BMI Canada.

We are proud of them and their achievements and salute them as well asthe increasing number of users who are bringing their music to the earsof Canada and the world.
